As a Gundam fan I can’t make heads or tails on any of these castings until I get a blurb on what the movie will be about because none of these castings really point at anything. There’s only a handful of characters in the entire franchise where you can cast an actor and immediately know who they’re going to play and they definitely haven’t done that so far.

Do we have a Char locked in?

Yes I had heard it would be Owen Wilson

A choice not weighed down by gravity!

Sydney Sweeney?

I wish to be wrong, but the casting is shaping to be a loose adaptation of 0079. Noah Centineo - Amuro Sydney Sweeney - Sayla Michael Mando - Captain Bright Shioli Kutsuna - Mirai

The rumor was that it would be an original story that takes a lot from 08th MS Team, though that may have been from when Vogt-Roberts was attached

newier Mar 26, 2026 +3
Bright is 19 in 0079. That casting would be idiotic.

While I will be the first to tell you Gundam needs its child soldiers... but like in anime, shit ain't gonna hit the same in live action. And even if it is actually a plot point called out to underline how many have died Bright's age is almost as ludicrous as Ramba Ral's.

newier Mar 26, 2026 +1
Bright's age, and the age of the main cast is an important, maybe even the most important part of 0079. They are children, they are ignorant of the politics of adults, dragged into a war way above what they are ready for, forced to confront horrors they can't comprehend, and make decisions they can't know the answer to, while also showing how the adults and those accustomed to war don't even think twice about these same decisions, how war blinds those to the reality of the world it effects. There's a reason the protagonists of most Gundam are kids. The view of war from an impressionable outsider with no choice in the matter or control over the bigger picture is integral to the message of Gundam, especially 0079 and most of it's offshoots. My honest guess is that the live action film won't be an adaption of 0079, it'll probably touch on a lot of the themes and ideas, like a lot of the AU Gundam stories do as well. If the live action drops the "child solider" aspect, it'll be doing a disservice to what is probably one of the most confronting and important aspects of Gundam stories.

Do I reference Bright and Capt. Paolo's conversation just for my health? Do I talk about child soldiers like I have never seen a Gundam? Also yeah Tomino made it more plot relevant... but it is also still Japan's youth obsession where 30 is somehow old and like kids simply can't relate to an Unc-san or whatever. Hence why Gundam is not even remotely the only franchise with a ridiculously young cast. And what's important is that Bright be an inexperienced and low-ranking officer which does not require he be a college freshmen who'd never have a commission in most modern militaries. Honestly you could get away even with him being experienced too since his role is still to be the adult in the room, particularly with Amuro, and time is probably tight. Likewise the rest of the crew need to be civilians, but guys like Kai and Hayato being older then 20 is fine as are Sayla and Char. The one who NEEDS to be a young is Amuro and "young legal adult" works fine over child soldier. America seems to hardly consider college grown these days I swear.

What a random ass assortment of actors. What even is this?

circio Mar 25, 2026 +10
You think it’ll be a 0079 adaptation? I’m worried SS will be Sayla lol
10
r_lucasite Mar 25, 2026 +13
My current guess is something that is vaguely UC since it’s the most popular continuity with the fanbase but it would give them the ability to use popular stuff from shows like Wing that were big in the US.

FewAdvertising9647 Mar 25, 2026 +9
I think it will be OYW based original like most spinoffs are. If they ARE going to adapt a random show though, id rather them pick War in the Pocket or 08th MS team, due to their length and ease of understanding/picking up.

circio Mar 25, 2026 +5
8th MS team is probably one of my favorite side stories, but idk I feel like it’s too small scale for their first live action outing. I’m guessing OYW as well, which I’m fine with, but I’m worried lol. I recently rewatched the dub and the anime still holds up though

FewAdvertising9647 Mar 25, 2026 +7
its about length. the longer that you pick, the more condensed its gets and gets butchered. An arbitrary movie is about 2 hours long, a typical anime episode is about 20 minutes. So the ratio of movie to episodes is about 6. if they pick something thats like WITP, they can get the whole story and make the changes they want and have a complete story. If they pick something like 08th MS, they have the task of cutting content to fit it, but its reasonable (e.g episode 12 can be boiled down easily, so its effectively cutting down 11 episodes). If they were trying to condense MSG in its entirely down to a single movie, you're going to run into what happened with F91.

circio Mar 25, 2026 +2
That’s fair and makes sense. Also I don’t think it’s announced as having planned sequels, but I could also see if they’d stop at some point during the OYW instead of its finishing it, leaving room for more movies. Maybe after Garma? Especially if we get characters as cool/interesting as Char. I haven’t finished Zeta or Char’s Counterattack so no spoilers please. I’m watching Zeta rn and have only seen 0079, 8th MS team, and Stardust Memory from UC lol

They have literally done the OG series as three perfectly good movies.

LapsedVerneGagKnee Mar 25, 2026 +4
08th ultimately amounts to very little and would make a dull movie. I still think a live action version of the “Where people are born…and die” bit would be quite the spectacle.

circio Mar 25, 2026 +2
I recently finished the 0079 anime and I agree. That opening is sick lmao
2
turkeygiant Mar 26, 2026 +2
Yeah, I have no idea, I was trying to be open minded and optimistic about the idea of live action Gundam movie...but then they announced Sydney Sweeney as the first big star attached and...I'm just like who do they think Gundam fans are?

fromwhichofthisoak Mar 26, 2026 +1
Uhh what is Gundam about? Something teenagers or angst yas something politics but just robots in space. Why is this a concern

Mykep Mar 25, 2026 +49
Hi Yukio! > Sweet Tooth showrunner Jim Mickle is directing from his own script This gives me hope for the project.

Also tangently related to, but not directly to the topic, I find it funny that production is happening in Australia even though Gundam has made Australia a reoccuring joke (non maliciously) in japanese mecha in its entirely for over half a century now

WildSeven0079 Mar 25, 2026 +9
I keep expecting a Megan Fox announcement since she mentioned in an old interview that she watched Gundam Wing as a teen and wanted a live action movie of it.

Bandai rushing out Gelboob Gunpla kits for SS as we speak!

Sydney Sweeney with her valley accent in space. Nice

Fyrefawx Mar 25, 2026 +18
I want to be excited but casting Sydney Sweeney doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence.

AccidentalMechanic Mar 25, 2026 +5
Feels like they only got her for the controversy and the free marketing, that's probably why they are slowly announcing the cast too. Makes me think that it's just gonna be a cash grab, especially with them building controversy so early.
5
Coolman_Rosso Mar 25, 2026 +6
To be fair to Sweeney, she is a draw in the right kind of movie (see Anyone But You and The Housemaid). A Gundam movie though? Doubtful
6
AccidentalMechanic Mar 25, 2026 -3
I don't really feel the need to be fair to her, I used to feel bad for how over sexualized she was, but then she started selling soap with her bathwater in it. Honestly lost respect for her after that. Pretty disgusting behavior, tbh.

Affectionate_Comb_78 Mar 26, 2026 +1
Surely what's disgusting there is the people buying it?

Saving him for Mu La Flaga
3
This-is_CMGRI Mar 25, 2026 +3
so if it's Glen Powell as Mu then who do we get for Kira Yamato and Murrue Ramius respectively?

Preston-_-Garvey Mar 25, 2026 +3
I hope this movie is good but the casting for it has been all over the place and with no details on the script It's hard to say but for me, I think it's going to be garbage hope I'm wrong.
3
LapsedVerneGagKnee Mar 25, 2026 +2
The fact that their lips are sealed over the plot has me worried.
2
UvWsausage Mar 25, 2026 +2
I’m hoping for a cinematic AU. If they try to adapt anything or set it in a certain time period, there will be infinitely more complaining and judgment.
2
LapsedVerneGagKnee Mar 25, 2026 +1
Mirai? Yes it’s woefully optimistic to assume this is a Grandpa Gundam adaptation but most of the casting fits.
1
imaginary_num6er Mar 26, 2026 +1
So who’s being cast as Gihren Zabi?
1
Ash_Killem Mar 25, 2026 -1
This is going to be garbage. Hopefully it doesn’t get made.

this is pretty exciting! shioli's talent will definitely bring something unique to the gundam universe. hope they do it justice!

MissInkeNoir Mar 25, 2026 -8
Who the f is she supposed to be playing? Mirai? With her face and build? That's thinwashing. Sayla Mass? Sayla wasn't even Asian. She and her brother are probably Dutch or German. Fraw Bow has German ancestry. Idk maybe the new live action production is just going to jam a bunch of stories and characters from different Gundam series together, we really can't assume anything. Sincerely, someone who got into Gundam since GquuuuuuX came out and started watching the original shows in order.
