Cult dynamics are a wild thing. I used to feel this way too, but then I started reading and listening to perspectives from people who escaped cults. We often hear the perspective of vulnerable people joining cults like lambs going to slaughter, but I was surprised to learn that intelligent, emotionally stable individuals can get roped in as well. The thing about cults is that the effective ones shift their members' values and priorities, but they do it incrementally. What feels normal at first - listening to a preacher, meditating, therapy sessions - eventually rearranges your entire identity and personality, turning you into someone your past self may have barely recognized. Maybe two years ago you would have never laid an unkind hand on your own child, but now you're convinced that killing them is the only way to save them from the apocalypse/satan/etc. It's awful stuff.

Religion can really get inside people’s heads and f*** them up royally. Get enough religion in your head and you’ll believe absolutely anything.
