One in 82 people are a victim of a violent crime in Shreveport, compared to one in 192 in the state of Louisiana, the report showed. Those are stats no state should have.

I lived there twenty years ago and my parents still live there. Violent crime was reported daily. It is an unlivable city to be in

Same. Only lived there for 2 years, but it's the only time in my life my house was broken into, the first time I was ever jumped by random people, and the first time I had to learn to defend myself. Thankfully, mom moved us out of there by the time I was in 7th grade. The friends I had at that time are all dead or in prison now. So thankful we got out of there.

It's because they don't understand what per capita is. Kinda like how they think land can vote. I live in a small town and travel to cities occasionally. People always warn me to be careful when I do as if the darn small town isn't the one that has me on edge. I feel significantly safer in larger cities and I can be myself way more openly.
163
UnitSmall2200 2 days ago +60
Another issue that warps their perception is that all those rankings about the "most dangerous cities" in the US are about cities. They completely ignore rural America, which makes them dumbasses think their places are safer because they don't appear in those city rankings.  Not that they actually read any of those rankings, they just love to parrot what other conservative small-town bumpkins are spouting, they'll usually say how dangerous Chicago is and claim it is the most dangerous place in the US, even though it's not even in the top 20 and of course none of them has ever been to any of those places.

I’m from a small southern city and now live in Los Angeles. I was warned about crime but I feel so much safer here. I’ve sent crime statistics to family a few times because it’s so much lower here, despite what they all think.

Same for Arkansas. A lot of our cities (Little Rock Metro area and Pinebluff in particular) have extremely similar statistics and it's a red state.

The way they talk LA, Portland and NYC are a wasteland of smoldering embers. Meanwhile they're actually economic powerhouses that areas like they live in suck the financial teet of to maintain whatever positive flow of money they can find.

used to live in the highland area a few years back, there was about 2-3 murders in or near my backyard where i lived on merrick street over the span of a few months to the 3 years i lived there, i was astounded when i had went to school just to find out some kid got shot just outside my back gate the night before crime was pretty bad there, a few sex offenders lining a few streets, mine and my sister’s bikes got stolen out of my backyard alongside my lawnmower, not to mention my front door had a few bullet holes in it before and after we moved out

"The Daily Mail reports that Shamar Elkins posted a photo last week with his seven children. In the caption of the photo, Elkins noted that he had taken the children to the church for Easter. “Happy Easter had a wonderful time at church for the first time with all my kids what a blessed day," he wrote in the post."

_Down bad_ can also mean fiending for something in a non-sexual way. The pic is of his daughter holding a burger and mid bite while sitting in his passenger seat. I interpret his caption to mean he caught her (took a candid picture of her) chowing down on a burger she was clearly craving.

Down bad means looking stupid or seeing someone while they look silly or crazy. Like a picture of her with ketchup on her face or taking a big bite out of the burger. It’s like saying caught you doing something you might be embarrassed about.

Emotional pain like this is where I start questioning my own belief that you should always try to save the life of suicidal people if they don't have an illness that is impossible to heal and only causes them suffering. Especially because the gunshot wounds will cause her issues for possibly the rest of her life too.
13
hirudoredo 2 days ago +312
there are a lot of steps between surviving being shot in the head and waking up being cognizant enough of what's going on :( No matter the outcome, that poor woman.
312
littlebittydoodle 2 days ago +66
Possibly… we don’t know her state (or at least all I read was it sounds like one adult woman shot is now stable and awake, and the other is in more serious condition and may not survive). I didn’t check for updates since I posted my previous comment so it may have changed… but I have literally seen a man shot in the head walk himself into the ER and check himself in, so…

19
littlelupie 2 days ago +43
I somehow missed that she survived (yes I kept hearing about the kids but it didn't click for me until just now). As a parent, I'd just never want to wake up. Especially if the person I chose to father my children was the one who pulled the trigger.

I know violence like this has always existed, but it really, truly feels overwhelming as of late. Man kills woman (and often children). I’m a millennial who watched the internet be born and am no longer buying the theory that we just “hear more bad stories” because of ease of access. It’s absolutely happening more. And it’s terrifying.
35
littlelupie 2 days ago +68
It's not though. The rates have actually been pretty steady since the the 90s, despite the fluctuation in overall gun homicide rates. I'm a millennial and I used to work at an emergency IPV shelter as a crisis line caller and then in the shelter when not on the phone. Nothing is increasing. Yes, you really are just hearing about it more.

"Shamar Elkins and his wife were in the middle of separating and were due in court Monday, said Crystal Brown, who is a cousin of one of the wounded women. Brown said the couple had been arguing about the separation before the shooting. “He murdered his children,” Brown said. “He shot his wife.” Elkins shared four children with his wife and three children with another woman who lived close by and who was also shot, according to Brown. All the children were together at one house, she said."

From another source: >In March 2019, he was arrested after firing about five shots at a vehicle near Caddo Magnet School while children were outside. Officers recovered shell casings and a gun. He pleaded guilty to illegal use of weapons in October 2019, received 18 months probation, and the firearm charge was dismissed. Okay. Why the f*** wasn't an attempted murder 6 years ago enough to lock him up for life?

That would have been on the prosecutor, not the judge. Prosecutor wants to keep his job by not looking like he hates the 2nd Amendment. Ok, probably the judge, too. But essentially first offense for the prosecutor pushing a minor felony, 18 months probation is fairly normal. We should also look at his probation officer to see if they were slacking.
54
Spire_Citron 2 days ago +5
I find it deeply disturbing how much of sentencing is just up to whim, basically. There's no real system to ensure any sort of consistency. You can get completely fucked over something relatively minor or get off with almost no consequence for a serious offense.
5
AmericanSteel412 2 days ago +21
Because DAs suck and prefer plea bargains so they don't have to do their job. That's why the DA let him plead guilty to a lesser charge in exchange for dropping the firearm charges so he wasn't punished for attempted murder. It's stupid bureaucratic bullshit that puts dangerous people back on the street.

You’d be surprised how many violent crimes are probationary sentences. You can’t lock everyone up or the system wouldn’t be able to handle it all. Feel like people really don’t understand how many felony and misdemeanor crimes happen per day in major metropolitan areas.

A woman is 70 times more likely to be murdered by her male partner in the first two weeks of separation. Some studies say that up to half of all female homicide victims killed by a male partner were killed while in this period of trying to leave or having just left. The danger is not only during this time, however, with some studies saying that the increased likelihood of violence can last for years after the separation. We know that men's violence takes many forms beyond the physical, such as language and ideology. Combine this violence with unfettered access to guns, being immersed in a deeply violent patriarchal society like ours, and it's really no wonder we see news stories as horrific and devastating as this one.

>There have been at least 114 mass shootings in the United States so far this year, according to the [Gun Violence Archive](https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/reports/mass-shooting), which like CNN defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more people are shot, not including the shooter. Today is day 109 of the year 2026.

The ruling class sees this as acceptable losses. I am quite sure they would see much more loss of life as acceptable, too, so long as it’s not theirs.

While I agree, it's not that easy for people. Stigma, financial concerns, access to it, etc. So many failures to our society.

We are fucked up animals and always have been Yall are so witty that this is due to capitalism or politics or who knows what the stance of the week is. The disease is the human heart.

Genuinely curious, what gun control would fix issues like this? In Czechia the gun laws are LOOSER then the US but you don't see nearly as much gun violence. NYC for example has the strictest gun laws in the US by a huge margin, but the handgun crime rates there are still sky high? Why is that the case when it is already a felony to simply touch a handgun in ny without a pistol permit which takes well over 2 years to obtain? What laws would fix the gun crimes in nyc if the strictest laws in the country aren't already doing that

“If every bullet cost $500 there would be no more innocent bystanders. Shit they put $1500 worth of bullets in his ass- he must’ve done *something!*” I think about this routine a lot, it’s funny but also true.

1egg_4u 2 days ago +23
Turns out it is really easy to obtain an illegal firearm when everyone can legally get one basically without barriers everywhere and anywhere... like all you have to do is just pay someone to get it for you. Trust me, Canada gets your overflow guns too and it sucks. We dont like it. Yall make it too easy you dont even make people take a licensing test to prove they can even use it and you can just carry it around. The cops get called in canada if you just carry a gun around and you guys can walk into a restaurant with one like it's normal. It's really weird to defend that

A lot of people in the United States are perfectly fine with children dying if that means they can have guns.

Basic-Collection5416 2 days ago +2
Does Louisiana actually go seize guns from felons or do they just work on the honor system? He may have acquired it legally before he was prohibited from owning.

"Deadliest mass shooting since 2024" This is in the headline, like it's such a long time. *Normalized* is an understatement. We need a new word or phrase for this shit. How about *Culturally Accepted*? *More culturally accepted mass shootings happened at schools today in Nebraska and Kentucky. There were a few more in other states earlier, reports say*

Not including this weekend’s incident in Shreveport, the Gun Violence Archive lists at least 119 mass shootings in the United States this year, resulting in 117 deaths, including 79 children, and 458 people injured.

JustHereForCookies17 2 days ago +9
So 2/3 of the deaths have been children.

Now how many of those are gang related? Because usually gang members already can't own guns, so would gun laws really stop those shootings?
