fine, I'll read the article and quote Bill Lawrence for everyone, ".. explore a new direction for its characters rather than continuing the existing emotional storylines" TLDR: S4 = Same actors, same characters, not picking up where they left off Edit: This is what I love and hate about Listnook. Someone named Jizzbot clearly gets it. Others can read the same quote and still be absolutely baffled.

Season 9 of Scrubs replaced most of the cast, or whittled their screentime down.

Like, in terms of something else happening to change the story a lot? Or same cast playing different characters in a new story?

Probably a new status quo. Like how Ted Lasso wrapped up it's storyline after season 3, and now season 4 is going to have him coach a new team.

Yeah, my guess would be a bit of a time jump. This season was planned as the final season so I'm guessing they wrap up all the threads pretty well. Maybe focusing on Jimmy semi "moving on" from his wife passing, his daughter focusing on college, etc.

In terms of moving on from the death of Jimmy's wife.

Fair. I’m on S2 and was wondering how long they’ll keep that piece going as they’re already starting to heal and move past it in a sense

I’d guess a time jump. Maybe the conflict of Alice moving back after college and readjusting to life. Hard to see where Paul fits in all that though

There won’t be too much of a time jump (except maybe the Baby being a toddler now). It’ll focus on friendship, like it always has.

Sweet. Harrison Ford should play Liz.

Fresh narrative doesn’t imply new characters: it means the current storylines have run their course and there’s a reset to the plots.

Mate, in what world would a show recast all of its actors as different characters with a new story under the same name? That’s not a creative risk that’s like a glue sniffers brainstorming idea that gets thrown away immediately.

coreoYEAH Apr 4, 2026 +3
Miracles Workers did that and it was fantastic but it was the whole point of the series.

ThunkAsDrinklePeep Apr 4, 2026 +2
Also American Horror Story, no?

honkymotherfucker1 Apr 4, 2026
Yeah with something like Shrinking I feel like it would literally obliterate the audience.

No it isn't very clear because thats obviously not what he means here.

"But if we started Season 4 a month later and Jimmy turned to Liz and said "|'ve been thinking about it and I'm still super sad about my wife dying" we'd all stop watching, too. So yeah continuation/new story language doesn't bother me. But we won't be telling the same stories."

so in your mind the 4th season of shrinking is going to be a totally new story with new characters, and the new characters will be played by the same actors who played the old characters? that's what you're saying? that's bonkers. no f****** way that's what they're doing.

frazorblade Apr 4, 2026 +3
I’m not reading that at all from those quotes, he even says “new direction for it’s characters”. You can take risks without rebooting the entire show.
3
mcmatu Apr 5, 2026 +2
I feel like it’ll be more of them living their lives and hanging out. You’ll have Jimmy truly back dating again, his daughter at college, etc.

Bill Lawrence seems to often be a victim of his own success, just look at how he tried to rename Cougar Town

I tried this show because I love Bill Lawrence and Harrison Ford and Jason segel is cool but man I couldn't get through the first season. it felt like cougar Town went to therapy and stopped being fun. I didn't think I like any of the characters. not sure if it got better later

fair enough.. maybe I'll finish out season 1. it's an odd thing...I don't dislike the show there is just something not clicking for me

LayneLowe Apr 4, 2026 +2
Not the sensitive type eh?
2
ssp25 Apr 4, 2026 +2
you know that's the thing...I love that aspect of Bill Lawrence shows. scrubs did such a good job of mixing jokes, a little drama, and real life situations with heart and emotion. I'm not getting it from the characters in shrinking so far
2
LayneLowe Apr 4, 2026 +4
It's just a neighborhood love fest, erbody be huggin
4
mcmatu Apr 5, 2026 +1
It gave me very “Cougar Town” vibes pretty quickly.

My partner loves the show and I felt the same, it was painful to sit through an episode, I think cos it felt always on, like every damn line was a dad joke. But then at some point I started caring about the characters (I don’t know when) and now it feels really wholesome and warm, and it’s nice cos not much does.

HereToFixDeineCable Apr 5, 2026 +1
I've tried but I think the way all of the characters hang out with each other individually in nearly every episode feels...the opposite of organic. We're on season 2 and I just can't get into it at all.
1
barbie-bent-feet Apr 4, 2026 +1
I couldn't even get through the first episode...the wife (of Harrison Ford?) had such ridiculous plastic surgery it was so distracting

TheSpaceman1975 Apr 5, 2026 -3
So more completely unbelievable relationships and characters living out different pharmaceutical commercial plotlines. This show is garbage.

RobotPoo Apr 5, 2026 +1
Clinical child psychologist and actual real shrink here, never thought id see anyone say this truth here, where its mostly fans of the show.

Some of the worst dialogue on tv. I'd rather go to the dentist than watch another episode of this garbage
-3
Friendly_Limit_5633 Apr 5, 2026 +1
What makes the dialogue bad to you?
1
Normal_Choice9322 Apr 5, 2026 +2
Nobody speaks in nonstop quips it's such unbelievable nonsense

Yeah the show was entertaining in its first season but has gone downhill. Lawrence just forces this fantastical positivity in the show it happened with Ted Lasso too. No matter how bad a person acts or behaves they just need a good speech and suddenly everything is alright. And with one of the key aspects of Shrinking it's even worse

I enjoy it as an escape from reality.
