Sid Krofft, Co-Creator of Mind-Blowing Kids TV Shows, Dies at 96

Posted by drsweetscience

Don't forget his Prime-Time variety shows, too. There should have been more Pink Lady and Jeff.

Always loved the Mr. Show parody of their trippy 70s kids shows. [The Altered State of Druggachusets](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOXQ2kRJ0wQ)

I am old, and grew up watching HR Pufnstuf, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, Land of the Lost, Lidsville, and The Banana Splits. These shows made me who I am today.....and drugs.

I'm old too, (Generation Jones) and if there's one thing this world needs more of is the Mad-cap, the un-serious, the poops and giggles of life. These shows led us to Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder. These shows were great. They never preached and yet the unstated moral was love and friendship. These were made by hippies and freaks. We are missing the benefits of 'absurd'.

cardinalkgb Apr 13, 2026 -4
Generation Jones? Are you embarrassed to be a boomer?
-4
Substantial-Bet-3876 Apr 13, 2026 +5
It’s a subset, what are you? Some kind of xennial?
5
cardinalkgb Apr 13, 2026 -3
Yes it’s a subset. But that still means he’s part of the larger set and is a boomer which he is rigorously trying to deny.
-3
IvyGold Apr 13, 2026 +7
I had to look it up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_Jones I think I'd heard of it, but didn't realize it was becoming a thing. I think it's 100% accurate: a college freshman born in 1949 was listening to the Beatles and worried about Vietnam. A college freshman born in 1962 was listening the new wave and worried about Reagan. These are two completely different generations. Is Generation Jones becoming more widely accepted? I hope so.

Substantial-Bet-3876 Apr 13, 2026 +3
Wow a rigorous denial of being a boomer. Rigorous you say! I re-read the comment…not so much. 😂

Boomer's ended in 1964. Yeah f*** them...They f'd the planet. We know, we watched.
-1
cardinalkgb Apr 13, 2026 +3
But you’re Generation Jones. That’s just an overlap of boomers. 1954-1964. Unless you don’t know what the f*** Generation Jones is.
3
Wayelder Apr 13, 2026 -1
go define yourself boomer. I'm not you.

> drugs Ah, the 70's: when you could turn an acid trip into children's television. Here's the RS obit: https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-news/sid-krofft-hr-pufnstuf-land-of-the-lost-cocreator-dead-obit-1235545986/

Sid and Marty Krofft were some of the earliest pioneers in mass-market kids TV. We all owe them a lot.

Underwater_Karma Apr 13, 2026 +19
I owe them for 50+ years of HR pufnstuf related nightmares.

btribble Apr 13, 2026 +9
I watched *a lot* of what they produced, and I just want to say, *I'm not so sure*...
9
tyuiopguyt Apr 13, 2026 +17
Without them, kids channels like Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon would've never got off the ground. You can grouse about their aesthetic all you like, but they made the idea of kids TV as a separate idea worthy of consideration by artists and accountants alike
17
btribble Apr 13, 2026 -7
Media for kids has existed for thousands of years. I think capitalism is pretty good at finding consumers.
-7
tyuiopguyt Apr 13, 2026 +7
Right, but before the Kroffts, "media for kids" was stuck in the "little bit for the whole family" variety show purgatory.
7
btribble Apr 14, 2026 -3
So, “unwatchable for adults”.
-3
tyuiopguyt Apr 14, 2026 +3
More or less. Unless you're one of the very few solid golid shows that pull the format off like The Muppet Show

🎵Sing along! 🎶 H.R. Pufnstuf Who's your friend when things get rough? H.R. Pufnstuf Can't do a little 'cause he can't do enough Once upon a summertime Just a dream from yesterday A boy and his magic golden flute Heard a boat from off the bay "Come and play with me, Jimmy Come and play with me And I will take you on a trip Far across the sea" But the boat belonged to a kooky old witch Who had in mind the flute to snitch From her broom-broom in the sky She watched her plans materialize She waved her wand The beautiful boat was gone The skies grew dark, the sea grew rough And the boat sailed on and on and on and on and on and on H.R. Pufnstuf Who's your friend when things get rough? H.R. Pufnstuf Can't do a little 'cause he can't do enough But Pufnstuf was watching, too And knew exactly what to do He saw the witch's boat attack And as the boy was fighting back He called his rescue racer crew As often they'd rehearsed And off to save the boy they flew But who would get there first? H.R. Pufnstuf Who's your friend when things get rough? H.R. Pufnstuf Can't do a little 'cause he can't do enough But now the boy had washed ashore Puf arrived to save the day Which made the witch so mad and sore She shook her fist and screamed away H.R. Pufnstuf Who's your friend when things get rough? H.R. Pufnstuf Can't do a little 'cause he can't do enough

Great work, ... Don't recall the song for Lidsville, with Billy Hayes as same Weenie The Genie (Witchy-poo was her best!) and Charles Nelson Reilly as Hoodoo the Magician. and the Buggaloos sang their own theme.

Reading these lyrics, I begin to believe the stories about the Kroffts having just a bonfire of weed they used to lay on their indoor fire pit. That whole song is one long weed hallucination. Their shows were like nothing else, and I loved them so much. I’m late Jones/early X, so right in the sweet spot for that Saturday morning mayhem.

I just read a book that is a 100% blatant rip off of Land of the Lost. Don't care, love that plot, will ALWAYS give it a shot

I watched it also. Unfortunately I missed all of their weirder shows by a few years.

Adam Carolla used to rant for decades about Sid and Marty all the time, calling them talentless hacks. Sid came onto his podcast (well before Carolla went off the deep end) and Sid admitted most of what they produced was basically shit. It was kind of funny to hear it from Sid, though. R.I.P. to a legend.

Adam Carolla of all people to be calling someone a talentless hack.

Carolla was incredible on Loveline, the Man Show, his morning radio show and the first six years of his podcast.

I can't say I grew up with these shows, but watching them during my early stoner days was life changing.  There's very little else quite like them, which honestly is tragic. The practical and creative effects and sets of the most iconic shows I'm sure inspired so much.  I'd be willing to bet that future examples, like Pee-wee's Playhouse, were in part inspired and wouldn't exist as we know them if not for these shows.

Their shows were SO weird; absolute madness. I remembered Sigmund, LOTL, Electra Woman, etc., but honestly wasn't sure if the earlier ones like The Bugaloos and Lidsville were childhood fever dreams or not; it was one of the first things I looked up when the internet came about (and there was, of course, someone who had a fan site, bless that soul). Vindication. Between PBS, Henson, and the Krofft brothers, I grew up kinda...silly. RIP SID!

happyflowerzombie Apr 14, 2026 +1
Knowing what we know now about Hollywood and America’s elite pedophiles, bet a whole truckload of kids got diddled on the sets of this man’s creations. Not that it detracts from his beloved properties or reflects on him at all, but doesn’t just everything seem so gross and corrupted lately, especially when children’s entertainment is involved?
