So I was reorganizing my movie collection and can across Her (2013). I had it classified as Scifi and then realized that it no longer was and should now be categorized as drama with AI companions being a real thing now. Are there any other movies that can be taken out of Scifi and put in another category?
I’m pretty sure The Matrix was a documentary, society ended in 1999, and we’re all living in a simulation…and badly written simulation but a simulation nonetheless.
Firefox, Colossus and Simone, I can definitely agree with them becoming reality. I haven't seen Demon Seed, but reading the synopsis, I don't think we're at AI breeding with humans.

The main premise of the Demon Seed is a woman is trapped in an AI controlled house which controls everything, and is designed to help her, but then it turns on her. I agree that AI breeding with humans thankfully won’t be happening anytime soon.
Firefox is a mind controlled stealth fighter. That’s already happening with sixth-generation stealth fighters with BCI, brain controlled interface.
Simone is a digital movie star who Al pacinos character falls in love with if I recall correctly. We recently had Tilly Norwood who is recognized as the first AI-generated movie star.
Colossus is AI that teams up with other AI and turns on its creators. We had AI talking with other AI and they created their own language. Under tests AI has been seen to be deceitful and work against its tester in a controlled environment.

How do you define "science fiction"? Everything depends on that. Is it the setting, or is it the story? Is "Star Wars" science fiction?
Asimov defined science fiction as the field of literature that explores the impact of scientific or technological change on human society. So by his standards "Star Wars" isn't scifi. And "Her" is.

I consider Star Wars to be science fantasy. Star Trek would be soft science fiction.

I thought Star Wars was in general categorized as fantasy though?

Bro, Jules Verne's stories about submarines and trips to the moon were and still are science fiction, even though those things exist now. The technology he wrote about was imaginary, and bears little resemblance to the technology of submarines and space travel today - just as the technology depicted in Her doesn't match what's now reality.

Not exactly what you asked for, but I recently noticed that Apollo 13 would have been sci-fi if it was released when movies started getting big, but was history when it actually was released. And I was wondering how close The Martian is to being in a similar sort of situation. It guess it's a sci-fi movie, but it really feels like it's close to not being sci-fi.

You are correct, that movie will become reality fairly soon. Maybe not in my lifetime but for my kids.

Science FICTION. the fiction part is key. It is why Apollo 13 will NEVER be science fiction and why The Martian will ALWAYS be science fiction.

blade runner's basically just a noir detective story at this point with all the surveillance tech we have now.

Alien is basically a haunted house horror movie. The scifi trappings are fairly incidental.
