I don’t know what the general consensus on that show was, but for the final episode to have literally no pay off in terms of plot, but to just be sort of a joke that the creator has admitted he has no idea what to do with is crazy. And then to not really even have an idea for season 2 is wild. It’s like he had a concept and a character and _nothing else_.

It's a pity because there's real meat in books 2 and 3. They paced s1&2 poorly imo. They could get more seasons out of it if it was better planned imo

throw23me4 days ago
+59
I don't get why they turned one book into two seasons. The first "Silo" novel is pretty snappy in terms of pacing, it could have easily been done in one season if they hadn't put in a bunch of stuff that wasn't in the books.
It felt like they covered the meat of the content in the first season and then had to pile a bunch of filler in the second to pad it out to a full season.
If they're committing to ending the show with the fourth season that means the pacing should be a little better. But I am worried they will cut out large portions of the second book since a lot of it doesn't involve the main cast and replace it with more filler. Shift was my favorite book in the series.
59
timmyctc4 days ago
+19
I think there is scope for book one being 2 seasons but definitely not how they handled it.
Also the book just has a bit of a grittier less hammy feel imo. I can't imagine the stuff with the >!war!< As well in the TV show. Reading that passage and the futility of how outmatched they were really hit me hard in the book.
19
Bosa_McKittle4 days ago
+9
As someone who hasn't read the book, while I can agree the pacing could have been improved upon, I think both seasons were great. Some of the slow pacing added to the depth of the mystery and character development. But I can appreciate (for any show or movie really), when you have read the source material and it doesn't live up to expectations. Overall I think that is really hard to do since we all imagine and perceive stories through our own unique lense.

they did a lot of world building. perhaps too much. but I love how real the whole thing felt and cannot wait for the next season.
16
throw23me4 days ago
+12
I liked the world building but I think it didn't leave enough room for the actual plot of the first book. And because of that they needed to extend it into a second season but it felt like they didn't have enough content for an entire second season's worth of episodes so they ended up putting in a lot of filler.
This is where I miss the good old days of longer seasons. A 14 or 16 episode first season would have been perfect to cover the entire book and also leave room for some additional worldbuilding and to flesh out some of the side characters.
12
beyondimaginarium3 days ago
+2
I think making it 2 seasons was fine, they added a lot of sub plot with the judicial side of the house which wasn't really in the books. Sims has like 2 lines of dialogue I think in total, and as someone who watched the show first I was surprised at.
There's also the generator repair episode which was like 2 pages in the book yet the episode didn't feel like filler and felt necessary to show (less than tell) the audience that Jules is their best engineer.
Lastly, I agree that shift was a great book and I hope they do it justice. Considering the liberties also taken i hope they can rectify some of the issues with book 3. And also... if they could pretend the novella doesn't exist that's cool too.

Just a guess so don't make me go clean but:
Season 1 bombs: It bombs, nothing they can do about it.
Season 1 Rocks: It rocks, that means more seasons without risking pulling a GOT.
Season 1 is Mid: Maybe people rally for Season 2 because it answers questions and they get a better chance to have more show.
1
Faithless1954 days ago

> They could get more seasons out of it if it was better planned imo
They honestly could've just not split the first book into two seasons. The third or fourth episode in the first season, with the engine turbine, is about a paragraph long, if that, in the actual book.
5
timmyctc4 days ago
+4
Not that I think that should be a full episode. But are you talking about Jules' final servicing on the generator before going up to her post as sheriff? If so I'm almost certain that was a fairly meaty chapter no? Unless it was just a very descriptive paragraph 😅
4
Tymareta4 days ago

No you're quite right, it was brought up as her condition for even considering being Sheriff, that they have a "power holiday" to repair it, with the actual repair being an entire chapter, the final one in part 2.

Mainly because in the show they needed to make the end of it line up in a way that didn't have to happen in the book.
8
Tymareta4 days ago
+3
Having read the books, I definitely thought that S2 went a little slower, but was filled to the brim with environmental/passive storytelling, details that would mean they didn't need to screech to a halt while trying to tell the story from Shift.
There was simply no way to adapt that rug pull without losing the majority of the audience, so instead they fleshed out other parts of the world and built up a solid foundation with which to tell the rest of the story.

I get that. I gotta say though, wasn’t much of a novel reader until this series. When there were only 3 episodes of season 1 out I was so curious I got the first book from my local library and was so hooked I finished all 3 before the season 1 finale.
One thing really cool is they have changed so much of the story that while it’s the same overarching plot, there is a lot of suspense still. Some main characters in the show are insignificant or don’t even exist in the book for example.

I’m glad they’re sticking closer to the book timeline. A lot of older shows used to get stretched way past their original ending just because they were popular, and the story usually suffered for it. The newer approach of planning a set number of seasons and actually ending as intended, regardless of popularity, makes the whole series feel stronger for viewers.

He just didn't seem to fit within the show. He was always so serious and gruff. No real emotional range. He felt like he was plucked out of a show with cops and undercover narcotics agents or something. Not as someone who could be the head of security in an underground society like a Silo.
9
Tymareta4 days ago
+9
That's quite literally his character though, he was raised by a "serious and gruff" tough man who had no emotional intelligence or capability, and as a result the only way he knows how to portray himself as competent and capable is by being an emotionally shut off cop.
The show goes out of its way to repeatedly show -and- tell us that he's head of security because he's so easily manipulated, that he's only ever been placed in the positions that he has because he's an extremely useful tool, hyper competent, but with 0 ability to question or think for himself. The Judge, his wife, Bernard, they all use him as they want, while oh-so-easily convincing him that everything he does is his own idea.
The show is pretty straight forward with all of this.

Definitely agree with your last point. I was able to binge it and had no issues at all with the pacing aside from a point or two in the story where they would introduce a cliff hanger and basically abandon that until an episode later or something instead of resolving it or giving clues. Been a while since I watched so could be misremembering tbf

I binge watched it a couple of months ago; it was my first time watching the show. I agree with your assessment that the pacing didn't bother me much. It's also a criticism that will lessen once people see where the story goes, the unfortunate reality is that book 2 would be basically impossible to adapt. So what seemed like a lot of pointless milling about and meandering will make a -lot- more sense with what comes in the future.

People are more likely to express their negative feelings than positive ones, and it's not just related to entertainment. I can count on one hand the things I've left positive reviews for even though hundreds of my orders arrived in good condition, because I can't be arsed spending my time logging it. But the 10% that was bad? They immediately get a negative review and I'll tell people about it. I've never heard anyone mention how their trip to the supermarket was good, but if they have a bad experience? Then that'd be brought up at dinner or water cooler chat in work.

I think its really about the fact that there is source material.
I watched season 1, and that got me to read the books. So I had finished them all by the time s2 came out, and I found the pacing in s2 to be off in a way I didn't feel about season 1 or the books.

You're on Listnook. Anything that becomes even slightly popular becomes a target. If it's slow, it's boring. If it's intense, it's not deep… The most interesting thing is with comedies. One moment they're nostalgic for when 30-minute comedies had 22 episodes and 10 seasons and only needed to be funny. One hour later they're complaining that some character in a current comedy hasn't had any development since 3 episodes ago, the writing isn't refined enough, and they didn't delve deeply into a certain theme. And they only love the "top 10 best TV shows of all time" because they don't rewatch them. They'd probably find them boring, predictable, with flaws in the script…

Opposite opinion, I thought Wool was 8.5/10, Shift 3/10, Dust 7/10, it simply meandered far too hard and the big reveals were incredibly obvious from page 10 so nothing really hit and it ended up just being a book spent with people that had all the personality of a piece of gravel.

I’ve been slogging my way through Paradise season 2, and I’ve been having the same issue. Half of each episode is a f****** flashback. Very excited for season 3. My favorite part of the book series was the Shift books which should be what season 3 is about. Not sure how they will handle the >!Donald reveal!< though.

This has been on my mind a lot considering how major of a reveal it was. One of my favorite moments from the book.

I don't think so... Maybe a bit but I don't think it's really a significant difference

>!The silos depicted in this seem way too close and way too small, but then again the geometry of the silos has never made much sense in either the books or the TV show!<

It's very much a sci-fi "don't think too hard on it" kind of thing, because from what we know of the Silo layouts in both show and book, it would realistically take someone around 2-3 hours to climb from the very top to the bottom or vice versa. Whereas in universe it's said to be a multiple day journey, with security teams struggling to complete it in 6-8 hours going full pelt.

I never made to the end of season 1. The mystery just bored me after a while and I lost interest. And none of the characters could make up for what the story lacked.

I hope the series gets back on track, because the second season was a huge disappointment.

Seemed like the same issue as House of the Dragon, the story is all out there to adapt, but the studio/writers/etc. want to stretch it out as long as possible.
If Silo is only supposed to have 4 seasons they may be cutting things out since season 2 took so damn long to move things along

Yeah. There was absolutely no need for them to have split the first book to be adapted into two seasons.

somebody once said that the lesson people learned from *Game of Thrones* was not to race through story too fast, so now TV shows don't tell a story at all
I think about that a lot with these streaming shows

I kinda hope we see a glimpse of the silos being constructed as well as the massive drills operating. My favorite imagery of the show is always the little hideaway where the drill resides near the big door.

Hopefully they light this season better - chunks of the last one I couldn't see anything, was like my TV was off.

The show is good but it’s not a great adaptation. The books are excellent. Too many unnecessary changes were made to the show, none of them for the better. I enjoy it, but it could’ve been so much better if they’d done a more faithful adaptation.

I love this show but the gap from Season 2 being so long and with some more complexity with the narrative in Season 2 it's going to be a pain in the ass to remember everything and probably necessitate a rewatch which is annoying.

I stopped watching halfway through season 1, not necessarily because it was bad but because life got in the way.
Quick question before I get back into: do they ever get out of that damned Silo? Because I was starting to think the world outside that silo wasn’t quite what it seemed!

How are the silos so close to each other? Don’t they have those farm levels? Don’t they have to have those farm levels to feed everyone?

So all of the 3rd season is set in the past? All the tension in the show is because of life in a silo. They better mix flashbacks with story set in the silos.

Be interesting to see how they take this to the big screen. From reading the books and avoiding spoilers, there is a crucial bit of content outside the current cast we have seen.

Telling how many apocalyptic bunker based prestige TV shows are doing well right now. Paradise, Fallout, and Silo all solid and scratching an anxiety itch right now.

It's pretty good sci-fi with Tim Robbins having the time of his life, so I am glad to hear that it finally continues.
