Silo. When does it get good?

Posted by nigevellie

I'm a fan of some of the actors like Rebecca Ferguson, Will Patton, and Rashida Jones. But this is my 3rd attempt at completing this series and I can't seem to get past 4 episodes before zoning out. Is it just not for me, or is there an episode in the first season I should try to get to where it finally grabs me or no? Addendum: the reason I even want to keep on trying is that I've watched some shows that did not hook me the first couple of tries but became favorite shows. Breaking Bad, House, Downton Abbey, The Expanse, DS9, Elementary for example.

Maybe it's not for you. Do you think you'd rather read the book?

It’s actually better than the books. It has more character development, more lore, and an actual sense of mystery. The books were more direct and the few mysteries that happen (especially the twist in book 2) were so painfully obvious. I liked the books, but some parts were such a slog to read. Second half of book 1 and first half of book 2, i’m looking at you.

The books tell the story better, IMO. I read them first, then watched the show and found it *very* non-engaging. Parts were good, but the slow rolling plot advancement is not fun.

Same here, I absolutely loved the books but have found the show to be a total drag.

Show adaptations are always a huge challenge because the mediums are so vastly different. These books move so fast they needed to slow them down for TV or else it would basically be a nine-hour montage. However, for me they went too far in slowing down by about double. What the show does better is character and atmosphere.

It might just not be for you. Things pick up as more information is revealed, but there's no point where things really explode, and the show moves pretty slow throughout.

Yeah, just stop watching it OP. It's not homework. I personally think it's awesome, but maybe it's not your thing?

I'd say if not hooked after the first four, things are not likely to change for you

The first episode grabbed me. I think this show might not be for you.

The first episode grabbed me too but it can be a rough challenge afterwards that that’s the best episode of the first season until the finale and featured a largely standalone plot

I agree. I find many shows are like this: Great opening and ending, but it spins its wheels in the middle to get to an 8 or 10 episode count (especially shows based on books).

I dunno, I love the series and the world it's in

Nope, it starts out great and it's ALL downhill from there. 2nd season is 60% filler, 20% side stories, 10% empty plot points and the rest is NEW unexplored plot threads. Apparently the books are CONSIDERABLY better because they don't need the filler.

I recently quit the show halfway through season 2. The first 3-4 episodes of season 1 were the most exciting imo. But in hindsight, I realized I only kept watching because the show keeps edging you with cliffhangers and character deaths (half of which were only there for shock value, despite their convoluted reasonings. They also kept killing all the interesting characters that I was invested in). With season 2 there isn’t a big mystery to drive the story (even though there’s still tons of unanswered questions, which are slowly uncovered), and none of the characters were interesting enough to keep me engaged. Also, the answer to the big mystery in season 1 was way less exciting than what I thought it was gonna be, which left me a bit disappointed. And I don’t think the world/Silo was fleshed out enough to make all the politicking impactful. Like in season 1 they keep mentioning unrest throughout the Silo and the need to increase police presence and stuff, but we barely if ever see any of that happening. For everything in general, the show does a lot of telling but not enough showing.

If you've tried 3 times and not enjoying it watch something else. Life's to be short forcing yourself to watch stuff that you're not enjoying
5
nigevellie Mar 31, 2026 +1
To be fair, it's not 3 consecutive tries. There's like, months and years and hundreds of shows and movies in between. But like I said, I'm a fan of the actors and I keep hearing it's good.

Doesn't matter if it's consecutive tries. Didn't think it was. Just it you've tried 3 times now and still find it isn't for you, time to watch something else

Eh, I think you just don't like it. The pace is pretty slow because of some decisions they made in adapting the source material.

For me? The first episode.

"When does Hawaiian pizza get good? I keep ordering it but I can't get past four slices." > I should try to get to where it finally grabs me Nobody here knows what grabs you. I liked the first season, not so much the second. The only thing I'll say about the first is that it shifts a lot.

It took me a bit to get into as well but I ended up loving season 1, but then season 2 was a serious slog to get through. I'm optimistic about 3&4 because of where the story will be and since they were made at the same time, but I don't think it's top tier tv by any means. So if you aren't vibing with it, eh, you're probably not missing out by letting it go. If 3&4 end up being great and you hear good things, you can try again later.

If by 4 episodes in it's not grabbing you, then it's ok to just drop it. Personally I was hocked from the first episode but understand why it's not for everyone.

Maybe try the book series first. I read it first before the series came out, probably why I liked the tone of the show. But personally, there is so much stuff, you aren't missing anything if you drop a show that other people like.

If it's your third attempt and you still can't get into it, it just clearly isn't for you and that's okay. Why are you forcing yourself to get through it

Might not be for you! I was hooked immediately. But sometimes when things aren't for you *now*, they can become "for you" in a couple of years. I tried to watch *The Leftovers* when it was airing and couldn't get into it. Watched it a couple of years ago and loved it. One of my all-time favorite shows.

I dropped off The Leftovers as well. I couldn't handle how heavy it was, at the point in my life I was watching it.

I can't imagine trying to watch a show 3 times. Move on with your life, man.

It doesn’t really get much better tbh.. I was in the same boat as you and stuck it through. It was meh to me. Cool idea, boring episodes with some decent payoffs but you have to watch too much side quest filler to get there

I did not expect a gritty noir, especially after the first episode. The show really doesn't return to the tone of the first episode, it stays a gritty noir until the end of the season.

I won't even lie to you. You just have to ignore Common's acting. He takes up too much screentime for someone so wooden and monotone. The rest is phenomenal.

nigevellie Mar 31, 2026 +1
Haha, I like Common. But I've never forgotten that he was a Rapper Turned Actor.

i would say for both seasons it does slow down a bit too much in the middle yeah.

gagreel Mar 31, 2026 +1
The first couple episodes are good, then a bunch of boring filler and the last couple episodes are good. S2 is nearly all filler. Common is bad at acting
