I stuck with it even though this put me on the back foot and it didn’t get much better. There were some good bits but most of the decent parts got dragged out beyond the point of them being funny. I felt that a lot of the sketches had the joke established quite early on and didn’t go anywhere from there. Okay, so they’re going to a Paddington experience. Oh, it’s a real bear. It’s attacking them. Okay, so let’s have three more minutes of that. Wet Leg were probably the highlight for me.
I really wanted to enjoy it, I’m a big fan of Ania & Larry, I’ve enjoyed Emma in everything I’ve seen her on, especially Taskmaster, and liked Hammed in Black Ops, but wanting to enjoy it wasn’t enough for me to actually enjoy it.

Tbh, I loved the overall show but this sketch was by far the weakest. The crowd mixing is way off, the jokes are a too obvious, and it had me nervous for a bit.
Luckily, it just rocketed on after this. The monologue was a perfect setup for the show, the nonce sketch is brilliant, Weekend Update was amazing.
This was the one massive miss, but I think everything else was a hit.

I was at the dress rehearsal, and the brief we were given is "If you'd smile, laugh, if you'd laugh, applause" but listening to this recording it definitely sounds like they mixed it with a prerecorded laugh track. is the british comedy scene really that great these days? seems like it's copying the australian model, where you give all the work (mainly panel shows with low overheads) to a tiny, aging cadre of household names and eliminate industry footholds for any new talent who wasn't in the cambridge footlights. uh i mean the melbourne uni chucklers.
9
mrwho995Mar 22, 2026

UK arts in general is definitely in a poor state at the moment because successive governments refused to fund it and brought the ladder up for future generations - the latter of which we're really beginning to notice - and comedy is no exception to that. But I'd say for now it's still in a pretty good place.
I enjoy the odd SNL skit and can enjoy US comedy (The Onion having historically been a real gem), but the SNL-style obnoxious, loud, unsubtle, one-dimensional humour really isn't a good fit for the UK IMO and isn't a direction I want to see our comedy go in.

My only complaint is they should bin the political cold opens. I quite liked him saying Lammy a lot. I thought he was going to go into a Frank Spencer or Carry On impression.
As it was the voicenote angle suffered because there was no back and forth. It would have worked better to record a few voice notes with Gen Z and Lammy chipping in to critique them. Something just to give it a bit of narrative.

There's just something about trying to take an American show and making it fit British topics just doesn't work. A mixed bag. Unsurprisingly, it’s at its best when it’s being weirder, more cynical, and edgier and at its worst when it’s hewing closer to the safe, inoffensive style of the US show.

I didn’t know that the UK had their own Saturday Night Live. Pretty cool. I thought that was John Oliver at first.

Do all British people look the same to you

Not gonna lie, British Islanders are the most diverse North Europeans when seen from outside. Yes, a lot end up by pale with "mousey' hair, but you can go from John Oliver and Cheryl Cole who looks almost spanish, to blonde swedish looking people. And of course London is one of the most racially diverse cities in Europe.

In fairness, this was the first episode so a few hours ago you were right to think they didn't have their own SNL.

UK Had a UK SNL show back in the late eighties that ran for 3 seasons. It took place on s Friday though so was called Friday Night Live.
Cast members included Hugh Laurie (House), Craig Ferguson, Adrian Edmondon (Alien Earth/Star Wars), Chris Barrie (Tomb Raider movies), Tracey Ullman and Stephen Fry (Bones).

I know you've done this as things not British people may know them from but seeing Ade Edmondson and Chris Barrie as known from Alien Earth and the Tomb Raider movies is really disconcerting.
Edit: Ah yes, Stephen Fry from Bones

Those are the most American names of shows you could come up with.
Not Edmonson from Young ones, or Fry and Laurie from a Bit of, or Jeeves

F*** SNL UK and whoever commissioned it.

The US SNL could use some competition. It’s been stale.

I must be the only Brit who liked this then lol

Why is it that the best peice of UK political satire in several years has come from SNL of all places? I know people are saying it was weak, but as a Brit, this kind of political parody is weidly absent rn

The Americans are obsessed with politics. It’s the only game in town, the road to wealth and riches. Now they’re trying to ship this ‘comedy’ over here.

Politicians SHOULD be boring, otherwise we wind up with clowns like Trump in power.

Starmer isn't just boring, he's an unprincipled scumbag. Just because he's not as loud as Trump doesn't mean he's not also a piece of shit.

Starmer is currently IMO one of worst PM I have ever lived under. Terrible Government and he has nothing going for him. Sooner he leaves the better. Hope the local elections Labour decimated
