So I finally started watching Silicon Valley, and holy f***, I missed out

Posted by MySmellyRacoon

To begin, I always saw the ads for Silicon Valley when it originally aired and I was never impressed by what I saw, plus I just didn't think a show about tech bros would be all that funny so I never bothered. I got HBO Max so I could watch The Pitt, and since I wanted stuff to watch in between airings, I decided to give Silicon Valley a shot. That's when I discovered f****** Mike Judge was behind this show and if I had known that I would've watched it when it aired. This show is the funniest goddamn thing I've seen since 30 Rock. I'm consistently in tears from laughing so hard. The park scene where the main character has a meeting with someone else and he freaks out while a child's birthday party is going on and the parents get nervous and the main character says more and more awkward things is a thing of beauty. I've binged through the first 4 seasons in a week and am currently up to season 5. I genuinely feel bad for having missed out when this show originally aired.

My favorite scene in the whole show is when Richard asks for advice from his doctor. Doctor: Yeah. You know, a while back, we had a guy in here in almost the exact same situation, "take the money or keep the company". Richard: What happened? Doctor: Well, a couple months later he was brought into the ER with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. I guess he really regretted not taking that money. Richard: He shot himself because he turned down the money? Doctor: Yeah. Or no, he took the money. Or no. No, he did not. You know what? I don't remember. But whatever it was, he regretted it so much that he ended up shooting himself.

The doctor is so funny. Richard: I think you meant to call me Frankenstein’s monster Doctor: oh, you’re one of those guys, huh?

Richard: I had sex. Doctor: With what? Richard: A female. Doctor: A female what?

I still play this scene back in my head. His facial expressions are the cherry on top; the look of disgust and horror.

The shake of his head when Richard says “lightning could strike twice” kills me every time.

olive_oil_twist Apr 12, 2026 +17
"You know, Richard, people don't really get STDs anymore. We'll get your test results back, and I would advise you not to have sex, but lightening isn't gonna strike twice, is it?" "It's possible." "What?" "It's possible." *head shake*

That’s because Andy Daly is one of the funniest people alive. His improve skills are unmatched imo.

Tacdeho Apr 11, 2026 +122
My first time seeing him was watching Review. I had a few episodes on a hard drive that I snagged from a friend (we used to pass around p****** files often in college), and watched it after a long night of getting tanked. I didn’t realize the show had an overarching story so it was hilarious to see him start a cult and basically be stuck in Waco, and then watching the next one and realizing it was the origin story

There all is aching.

sup34dog Apr 11, 2026 +32
My first time seeing anything from him was the Comedy Bang Bang podcast (around 2010). He's one of the best-ever guests on that show, and it's hilarious seeing a bunch of the regular CBB guests around that time work together on Review (Jessica St Clair plays his wife, and Lennon Parham plays the girlfriend/fellow cult leader)

UnemployedExpert Apr 11, 2026 +22
My first Andy Daly exposure was on s1 of eastbound and down as the dorky school principal. And then became hooked when I heard Dalton Wilcox (cowboy poet of the west) on CBB

deepeast_oakland Apr 11, 2026 +11
I’m sure you already know this, but just in case you don’t. Andy Daly has a podcast on Patreon. 160ish hilarious episodes, mostly as Dolton Wilcox. I’ve been listening for years, and I hope he never quits

Hahaha that might be my favorite character of his. But I think my all-time favorite is when he plays L. Ron Hubbard on the Dead Authors Podcast is goddamn hilarious. If you somehow love improv and are fascinated with Scientology at the same time boy oh boy you are in for a treat.

If you haven't previously done so, you should consider watching the 2014 series "Review". It stars, and is produced by Andy Daly (who is the guy that plays the doctor in Silicon Valley), and it is one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. Seriously it's so f****** good.

Consistently makes me shit my pants every time the scene comes on in rewatches. Mike Judge is a genius, almost all of his stuff is Top 5 worthy comedy.. Jared is such a *dark* character too, his lines go under the radar but paying attention to them paints a VERY bleak picture of childhood trauma and abuse. "I'll learn to overcome my fear of it using exposure therapy, like I did with intruders in my room when I was little..."

I forget the exact line, but Richard says something like “Just close your eyes and pretend like nothing bad is happening”. And Jared just quietly says, “So Uncle Jerry’s game”.

ColKrismiss Apr 11, 2026 +273
Most people say the middle out scene, but the funniest scene for me is before that. They tried to buy Adderall from a kid down the street but he ripped them off and Erlich goes out there "You just brought piss to a shit fight", slaps the f*** out of the child and throws his bike. So f****** funny

TJ Miller is my personal “art vs artist” conundrum, to say he’s so good in this is truly an understatement.

Coomb Apr 12, 2026 +14
It's genuinely fascinating that he got away with calling in a bomb threat while drunk because prosecutors determined that the continuing aftereffects of his brain surgery / arteriovenous malformation made it impossible for him to have the necessary element of intent to call in a fake bomb threat.
14
TheKingOfSwing777 Apr 11, 2026 +46
I think that middle out is definitely respected as one of the most brilliant scenes in this show or any, though it wouldn't even be in top ten FUNNIEST in my opinion. It's hilarious but more ingenious than comedic.

I spit when O.J. dishes on Dinesh for his necklace. "Hey Dinesh, nice chain! Do you choke your mother with it when you put your p**** in her butthole?" Edit: I did a spit-take the first time. If I can forget the bit it still catches me in a laughing-wheeze.

The doctor was played by Andy Daly. If you haven't already, make sure to check out his show [Review (2014)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2141913/).

RedHeadedSicilian52 Apr 11, 2026 +952
Loved the entire show, but the first season was absolutely _sublime_. In fact, between that, the first season of _True Detective_ and the fourth season of _Game of Thrones_, HBO really had a hot streak on their hands in early 2014.
952
Strelochka Apr 11, 2026 +450
It was really hamstrung by the death of Christopher Evan Welch, who played Peter Gregory. They retooled the story as best they could but that big conflict they were setting up couldn’t happen because of it.

The scene in the restaurant when Peter Gregory made the gag sounds it's epic 😆. Oww it's so displeasing that he passed away. The whole cast of the show is topnotch. [Peter Gregory/Gavin Belson scene ](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FqgaF2MDBkI&pp=ygUeUGV0ZXIgR3JlZ29yeSByZXN0YXVyYW50IHNjZW5l)

Wait they had to redo the story beats? What was Peter Gregory supposed to do if Christopher didn’t pass away?

Compete with Gavin B.
84
Strelochka Apr 11, 2026 +66
I can't remember now but he and Belson's actor had crazy good comedic chemistry and were obviously set up to represent polar opposite approaches of tech CEOs of that time. I think in a later season Belson seemed still hung up on him almost like he had been jilted by Gregory way back in college. Or I'm majorly confusing it with Mark and Eduardo in the Social Network lol, sorry for the misinformation if so
66
ZBGOTRP Apr 11, 2026 +32
IIRC Peter had been working on something that would be a huge benefit to Pied Piper back in the day, and Gavin bought out the IP to get him back on track with their old product. Which left Richard with the dilemma of selling out to Gavin for the rights to the IP or Pied Piper basically dying out.
32

mike judge is just built different when it comes to comedy 😂 the way he nails that awkward tech bro energy is perfect, and yeah that park scene had me dying too season 5 gets even more chaotic so you're in for ride, but nothing quite hits like those first seasons when everything was fresh 💀

Zach Woods (Jared) is so f****** great in this show. Also the end credit music is almost always bangers. Edit: I've seen a few people replying with his iconic quote "How would you like to die today, m***********?" and it seems listnook automods are deleting them. Anyways it's one of his best lines, so if we're all getting banned then we're all getting banned together.

And there was nothing more entertaining than to see him fail and get humiliated over and over again
9
where_is_lily_allen Apr 11, 2026 +423
Yes, it's absolutely brilliant. the first seasons are funny and a great commentary on the state of the tech industry in the early 2010s It got a little drawn out toward the end. They fell into a loop of everything going wrong, the company nearly going bankrupt, only for some deus ex machina to save everyone at the last minute for like 3 seasons straight lol And the characters didn't really grow or evolve at all. So it ended on a bit of a weak note But I had a blast watching it while it lasted.
423
LesMiserablePeach Apr 11, 2026 +108
I think when you know how it ultimately ends, the cycles of failure are less annoying on a rewatch. By the time they succeed, you don't really want them to. And I think them evolving straight into where they ended would have been less interesting
108
yo_soy_soja Apr 11, 2026 +73
> They fell into a loop of everything going wrong, the company nearly going bankrupt, only for some deus ex machina to save everyone at the last minute for like 3 seasons straight I stopped watching after I recognized this pattern. It's hard to get invested in things when you know it's gonna reset by the end of the season.
73
Slapmeislapyou Apr 11, 2026 +78
I rewatch silicon valley all the time, and I don't mind this so much.  It's like with The Soprano's, for all its acclaim it's got some really weak and trivial plot lines throughout the series, but I never watched it to see what's going to happen to this or that character, because the acting is so great I'm satisfied just watching them in their world, even if it doesn't go anywhere.  Same thing with Silicon Valley. I could watch Dinesh grow into an old man referring to himself as "Pakistani Denzel" and I'd be there for every minute of it. Lol
78
topheavyhookjaws Apr 11, 2026 +26

arekhemepob Apr 11, 2026 +7
Mike judge said having the main characters “win” makes for boring television so he kept having them fail. The writing and comedy were still top notch throughout, but the plot definitely meandered in the middle seasons

As much as it ended on a wet fart. The extended version of the ending documentary might be one of the best parts of the series and many people have never seen it

The_Bitter_Bear Apr 11, 2026 +9
Curse of a show being so successful at times. Too much pressure/demand to keep going after already telling the story you had in mind.

"you just brought piss to a shit fight" I laughed till I was sore at that scene

Honestly that's my favourite scene, very underrated compared to the middle out scene

“Hey Dinesh, do you choke your mother with that chain when you put your p**** in her butt?” “What the f***!?!” Show is a gem.

One of my favorite moments of the show
39
throwleavemealone Apr 11, 2026 +22
Which causes Richard to trip and fall and reveal their entire skunkworks plan
22
JasonMcBason Apr 11, 2026 +15
That scene was responsible for the longest laugh of my entire life. Not just Jared's comment but also how the scheme they had been building up to throughout the episode fell apart instantly. I was still laughing after the credits rolled.

He's also in a few of the episodes of the newer seasons of Ghosts (US), the character is quite Jonah-ish too.

You gotta specify. Because both lawyers were amazing

Gavin Belson is one of my favourite antagonists. He's so funny as a charicture of an egotistical tech CEO.
69
friendofH20 Apr 12, 2026 +33
Is it even a caricature? 95% of every thing he did was based on very real events. The only unrealistic thing is >!him retiring to write gay p***!< \- something actual tech CEOs should do more of

God and his signature looking like male genitalia is chef kiss
12
trevor426 Apr 12, 2026 +9
Actually I think his signature isn't used because they have a psychologist come in and points out all the negative characteristics of it. Then they present him with some new signatures to use and he chooses the d*** one. At least that's what I think happens, this thread making me realize I need to rewatch it again.

The whole jerking off part with jerking someone else off, and the diagram? Nothing funnier, imo.

MattAlbie60 Apr 11, 2026 +29
When you rewatch it, there are things that used to be jokes that are just real life now. And yes "middle out" is funny, but I would argue that the funniest scene of the show is when they're trying to decide whether or not to let Blaine die.

iholdmycatlikeababy Apr 12, 2026 +11
Grief threesome with Gina and Blaine’s hot mom question mark?!

The actor who played Peter Thiel died and I would gladly trade the real one to get him back.

It'd be really interesting to see a modern mini series of new up and comers trying to navigate current Silicon Valley, but one that is fully tied up with AI, fascism, tech bros, religious nut jobs, enshittification, raising prices, paywalling previously free features, tech nerd teenagers who only know how to work a phone or tablet, etc.

there is a new show called *The Audacity* premiering this weekend that seems to have the same sort of vibe. Hopefully its good [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryijrW6nKgA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryijrW6nKgA)

The episode where Gilfoyle creates an AI chat bot so he wouldn't have to deal with Dinesh was prophetic.
15
OuterHeavenPatriot Apr 11, 2026 +8
I fear the rest of the episodes will be as prophetic as the rest have already been... GOD WHY DID I SELL MY BITCOIN AS THIS SHOW AIRED?!? I WOULD HAVE HAD TRES COMMAS! Now I'm more like Russ looking for a thumb drive in the dump

boytoyahoy Apr 11, 2026 +15
The show would go from a comedy to a dystopian horror movie
15
leovin Apr 11, 2026 +47
The show was so ahead of its time that now it’s become a comprehensive documentary.

I've been in tech my entire career, love Mike Judge, and was so excited for this show. Was really disappointed by the pilot, mainly because Richard came across as such an unappealing character. After the first season ended, I gave it another try and was hooked this time. Loved the entire series and have binged it at least twice. was also late to the game with Mythic Quest, which turned out to be great
55
Oskarikali Apr 11, 2026 +35
As with pretty much every sitcom all the characters are unappealing. If you actually think about characters in every sitcom they're universally all shitty people, but they probably wouldn't be funny or interesting if they were normal, good people.   Richard is a whiny, awkward, cowardly b**** but that creates the funny situations.
35
MajorFuckingDick Apr 11, 2026 +11
Mythic quest is fantastic except it simultaneously went a season too long while missing a ending. Great show though

I think it's even funnier now that Ai is mainstream

I love Silicon Valley, as someone who knows a lot of people that worked in that area they say the show is a lot more accurate than people think
6
herseyhawkins33 Apr 11, 2026 +8
Yup only got around to watching it over the last year. Was definitely missing out! Jared is one of the best characters on TV period.
8
SnazzyStooge Apr 11, 2026 +7
I won’t spoil anything for later seasons, I’ll just say that Silicon Valley is fantastic for showing basically everything that you’ve ever seen in the news about tech startups. Man, I love that show, I think I’ve watched the full series about four times.
