If I recall correctly they announced sending 10,000 troops in Ukraine. So 2300 dead and x3 wounded is the typical stat, so….that means basically none of them left without at least getting hit. What a shit show. Modern war. Die like a dog for nothing.

>by February this year, the NIS updated the figure, saying that about 6,000 of the estimated 11,000 military personnel deployed to Russia had been killed or wounded
Sounds like a bit over half, which is still pretty bad.
There are reports that Kim himself told them to commit suicide before being captured, which might explain the lower ratio.

I kinda wonder if part of sending these guys to Russia is to demonstrate to the rest of the world what to expect if North Korea is ever invaded.
Basically: "Shock and awe won't work. Winning hearts and minds won't work. Bribes won't work. Expect WWII fanaticism and brutality every step of the way."

North Korea is quite fascinating to read about, for as little information is available to us in the west. The military is relatively well off, so lifelong malnutrition is definitely not at play here.

Sadly this is win win for Kimmy J.
He gets to get rid of mouths to feed he gets brownie points with Russia as well as he's getting money for them and making bombs and ammo from Russia.
He also gets combat experience for the ones that make it that can come back and train the military that in NK.
I'm sure Russia is helping them with things like making better nukes and what not.

It is to his benefit.
The military is an employment program - a way to not have a bunch of pissed off young men starving in the streets.
But in North Korea they also get larger rations and are prioritized for rations in shortages.
So less young men is a bargain for NK.

> Countries rarely call themselves what they are. China isn't communist
Communism is an utopia, no nation will ever be communist. Any attempt at nationwide communism will always devolve into dictatorship, because one has to force people into that type of society at first place, even people who disagree.
7

Communism is truly the « potential man » of politics.
2
Telen5 days ago
+4
Yep, it is inevitable in large part because of communism's relationship with violent revolution. A violent revolution will always be headed by jingoistic, extremist political ideologies that have no intention of relinquishing or sharing power as you would in an actual democracy. While there are always parties that want reform rather than revolution - let's say there is a scale of reform to revolution even in communist ideology - and they are always more numerous, the more peaceful and moderate parties are always violently suppressed by the armed extremists in the vacuum that follows a revolution.
4
cister5325 days ago
-1
I mean, socialism hasn't always tried to come to power in violent revolutions, look at Allende, but all those experiments were always shut off by the CIA. Also, there are numerous examples of violent revolutions not devolving into dictatorships (for example, the american revolution). The only socialist states that managed to survive have been the ones that used extreme measures. This is not a defense of violence, but we can't ignore the historical circumstances that made it.
-1
Telen5 days ago
It's important to not talk in abstractions here. "Socialism" has never tried to come into power. Groups of people with various kinds and degrees of ideologies have tried it. Some of them are more reformist and moderate in nature, others are more radical. It's absolutely true that the CIA had a hand in destabilizing otherwise stable governments, of course. I would not say that the only surviving socialist states only did so because of extreme measures or that the CIA was solely attacking socialist states, however. I think that these are more divergent paths than that.
0
cister5325 days ago
-1
But we can't say that all socialist governments have been violent dictatorships, when all the others have been systematically destroyed from outside. Most of the "justification" these states had for their violent repression was a response against foreign interference. I'm sure that these tools were mostly used as a means to ensure power in their leadership, as even their allies were sometimes purged when they threatened to take over, but this state violence was born as a response to outside threats. This isn't a trait inherent to socialist states, of course, that's why I think it's in bad faith when all of socialism is thrown in the same "brutal dictatorship" bag. Vietnam's market socialism isn't the same as the Kim's jucheism. There are many branches of socialism, and not all of them are of the authoritarian jingoist kind.
-1
Telen5 days ago
+1
Socialism is a broader umbrella term compared to communism, which is what I originally talked about, anyway. It's getting very vague when you widen the scope into socialism. Communism I use in the mainstream sense - to refer to the likes of the USSR. As for socialism, even many modern mainstream politicians can reasonably refer to themselves as socialists and justify it.
1
cister5325 days ago
+2
China doesn't call itself communist tho, the party calls itself communist as their theoretical goal is to achieve communism, but they don't say their state is communist. We can argue weather or not they are actually striving towards that goal, weather or not Deng's market reforms worked towards socialism or not, but China doesn't call itself communist at all.

I must say that North Korea is surprisingly transparent about this.
They built a monument with the names of all their fallen on it and everything.
So it does suggest that they might see their part in this war as being mostly over as the room left on the wall and the room left for graves of those who died with extraordinary valor isn't too big.

It's actually surprisingly lower than I thought. Considering they sent like around 10000, and considering they were probably mostly put on combat roles and no rear positions, AND they were instructed to kill themselves rather than be captured, in a famously meat gender battle, I thought it would be higher.
Still a mind numbing amount, all for some reasons beyond my comprehension.
