So I heard a lot of positive buzz around this new horror show, and I did watch the first two episodes, but... it's not grabbing me. I don't really like the protagonist >!(kind of selfish with the joints!)!<, none of the family are likeable either, and frankly, I'm not sure who the viewer is supposed to identify with.
Does it get better? Worth sticking with it, or just cut my losses and DNF?
Edit: Thanks for everyone taking time to respond! At the risk of confirmation bias, the comments called out much the same sense I was getting from the show, so it's a no-go for me.
I watched the whole thing and felt like it was actually more interesting toward the beginning of the show and went downhill from there. I liked the setting, ambiance, and vibes of the first couple episodes, but I reallyyy couldn’t get into the storyline introduced after that. I feel you, I didn’t find myself rooting for anyone in particular.

I agree, the vibes of the first couple episodes felt so much scarier than the rest and im dissappinted that it was all a red herring. I did like the show overall but totally agree with what you wrote.

So basically you liked the show when you didn’t know what was going on lol

No, if you don’t like the first two episodes then it’s not for you. The first four episodes are alright but then the last four make no sense and are exhausting to get through

I think it ends up about as good as a mid/low end Mike Flanagan project. The horror elements are strongest in the first few eps so if it's really not grabbing you I think it wouldn't be so bad to bail.
The first 4 episodes tell a good story and then things pivot a bit after that, so I would say if your in for a penny: watch to episode 4.

It’s another Duffer Brothers sci-fi series advertised as a horror series.

I liked it personally, it does pick up in the later episodes once things start getting explained and the characters get fleshed out.

I mean....do you like being confused for unknown reasons?

Hmmm. I didn’t find anything confusing that wasn’t resolved quickly. Nothing lingered.

It’s a weird show to recommend- I think thr quality is there in terms of production and I found the ending to be … unexpected. I finished the show because the first few episodes did intrigue me but if you aren’t engaged by now then you probably won’t enjoy the rest.

I personally love it - for me, it's been effective at maintaining a sense of constant dread or severe awkwardness. The story feels unique, too. I don't think you have to like the main character - everyone is broken in some way - but I like her because she's holding her own in an increasingly uncomfortable situation and rightly striking out instead being a cliche damsel in distress.

I felt like the first two episodes were definitely the strongest. If you are questioning the show at this point, it doesn’t get any better IMO. I think the cinematography and art direction starts to take a back seat.. the acting felt good at the start, but then starts to really go downhill with exception of 1 family member. I can only attribute this to the writers and direction given, as the acting felt fine in the first few episodes. I started to like the show less and less the more I watched, but it was still entertaining somewhat.

I'd say bail. The ending is nonsense and if you're looking for a payoff to that Ice Cream Man scene, or the Abandoned Baby scenario, tough luck; it never gets resolved.

The abandoned baby scenario does get resolved, just not satisfyingly. Turns out it was one of the wedding guests, who just came back to the car later. The ice cream man was just a standalone creepy character who was essentially a red herring until you find out who the Sorry Man actually was.
I didn't even necessarily like the show, but loose ends wasn't the reason for that. The storyline made sense, it just won't be for everybody.

Gave up by the 3rd episode.

Tbh, not really. The plot is stretched incredibly thin over the course of 8 episodes, so much so that when it ended I was left with the overwhelming feeling of “that’s it”? Doesn’t really justify its length for how little story there is, despite the strong performances and slick direction.

Good point. This would have been better as a tighter series. Maybe 4-6 episodes.

Yes, it was awesome. Great atmosphere and acting throughout. Never got bored, binged it in record time. Don't listen to anyone saying otherwise. It's a must watch.

I am sticking to it to the end maybe due to Rachel, I kinda like her but I can’t say how the ending will be as I am on episode 2

Horror films don’t scare me. Ever. This one scared the be-Jesus out of me so that after one late night episode I didn’t want to go out to my garage for something from the car. Could it have been about half an episode shorter? Yep. But I didn’t mind. For me, the perfect mix of a bizarre apres-ski lodge x sorta fort-like home with a pinch of asylum tossed in, bathed in sinister light and long distance camera angles that are so personal that we’re made to be close-up observers. The absence of jump scares was refreshing. The characters, most of whom exhibit eccentricities that could be just slightly past the “norm” scale at start. We viewers, as well as the bride, are left to view images and actions that disappear so quickly were not sure if they were actually real, or were produced simply through stress or pot. Soon enough, though, there’s no doubt that most everyone, including the bride, has secrets that we might not want to uncover. In the end, I felt like the circumstance which caused the curse to affect group A or group B was a bit weak. There’s a tinge of gothic reference throughout that leads to a satisfying, violent outcome. It was a fun and visually simulating freak show for me with characters that we all probably know ourselves.

No, it’s c***. Tedious, overlong, and full of actors whispering their lines. Get on with it, ffs.

A lot of people act like they know so much about what’s good movie/show should be but they really don’t 😭 they’re either impatient or can’t comprehend things lol. It was good. There were no cliffhangers like some people say lol

I enjoyed it a ton. Stick with it at least through the halfway point, there's some solid twists the recontextualise things. And there's a lot of interesting themes if you're willing to look at it as more than just a simple horror show.

I felt like it turned for me around episode 2-3. I viewed it more as a dark comedy, and it changed my perspective. I’m obsessed by the unexpected depth of the show

100%. I was pretty not into it at first, but when the reveal happens and it switches up it became way more interesting.

Agreed. I think the creepy hooks in the beginning didn’t keep me hooked, and it was a little slow but my curiosity kept me going. The payoff was worth it for me to keep watching. I already rewatched once and caught so much I didn’t see the first time around. Small comments and events seem intentional (minus the red herrings to add suspense)

> I don't really like the protagonist
I never like protagonists. We're not supposed to always like protagonists.
> I'm not sure who the viewer is supposed to identify with
Nobody! Some of the greatest films and TV shows of all time are about all terrible unlikely people that nobody sane could identify with. Many stories have no surrogate.
That said, I enjoyed it a lot, even if it was a bit long. Though I'm not a horror fan and I wouldn't have called it a horror show myself, it's a black comedy (to me at least).
