As an Oregonian, we're shaping up to have an absolutely awful fire season this year between a historic snowpack drought for most of the state and an early spring. It's gonna be bone dry back in those hills for *weeks* longer than usual.

I work in Mesa Verde National Park. The whole SW corner of the state is in extreme danger. We got a little rain yesterday, but we need so much more.

AnneMichelle98 1 day ago +32
We’re so dry, we’re draining Antero Reservoir into Cheeseman Reservoir to make sure the water doesn’t evaporate. The Hammer fire near Colorado Springs last week went from 500 acres to 4,900 acres in a matter of hours. We’re so so so screwed.

Same here in Washington. The anxiety is real and combined with the malice and destruction of the Federal government, I fear there will be far too little to stop the flames.

> shaping up to have an absolutely awful fire season this year between a historic snowpack drought for most of the state and an early spring. That’s not exclusive to Oregon, that is the entire West, from the Rockies to the Pacific.
2
VanZandtVS 23 hr ago +2
I know, but I'm *in* Oregon so it's front and center on my anxiety this year. Got a couple air purifiers for when the sky turns orange and gray and the smoke gets bad this time around.
2
drewts86 22 hr ago +2
All the other states should be a concern as well. Normally we all share resources but if we're all on fire at the same time it's hard for us to share those resources.
2
VanZandtVS 22 hr ago +2
> All the other states should be a concern as well I mean, i am *generally* concerned about everyone else, but I'm also a dad of two small kids, and that's why I'm glad folks like you have extra bandwidth to pay attention to the Big Picture. Hope you guys make it through OK this year.

GoalStillNotAchieved 1 day ago +2
In which months do the wildfires come? And is there smoke in the willamette valley each year?
2
Osiris32 1 day ago +13
The answer is "it depends" and "almost always." Eastern Oregon is usually what burns, but there are two areas in southern Oregon with rather regular Fire Regimes that flare up every 15 years (most notably the 1972 Graham Fire followed by the 1987 Silver Fire followed by the 2002 Biscuit Fire followed by the 2017 Chetco Bar Fire). Fire season usually starts somewhere around early/mid June and will end with the first real rains of late September/early October. However, that time frame is stretching as spring starts earlier and fall starts later due to climate change. Fire in the Valley is rare due to it being one of the wetter places in the United States, plus the deforestation, farming, and urbanization of the area. That being said, the 2020 fires were all in the Valley and they were BAD. Like 1.2 million acres burned, 3,000 structures lost, and 11 dead bad. Air quality in Portland was the worst in the entire world for two weeks, and mandatory evacuation zones were within the Portland Metro area. Not as bad as the Tillamook Burns of the 1930s or the Silverton Fire of 1865, but still really very not good. Source: former wildland firefighter here in the glorious Beaver State.
13
GoalStillNotAchieved 22 hr ago +2
Ohhh yes! Hard agree! 2020 was bad as HECK for wildfires here in California too! The whole west coast that year.  Hoping we don’t see the likes of that degree anytime soon
2
Osiris32 22 hr ago +3
2020 was just...bad. From start to finish. I ended up with a kidney stone in January, in February I broke an ankle, and in March the world stopped. Then we protested and everything caught fire. Then it snowed too much. F*** that year.
3
Charliegirl03 1 day ago +12
Usually summer, late summer, but I predict earlier this year. It’s been dry af this year. I’ve lived here for 15+ years and wildlfire smoke wasn’t really a thing that I can remember until recently. It’s been pretty bad, and I grew up in fire country. Like, be prepared to evacuate every summer.

well that's the duality of Oregon. All the rain gets the green. But if you don't get enough rain (or snow) over an extended period, we get fire. But overall I would say that June is probably your best bet. Or May.

Yeah, as a Californian, part of me has been wondering if they understand how it feels now, and if they are calling themselves sinners and this gods wrath or whatever vile shit they spew at us when this happens here. I’m guessing some might develop some empathy, and start realizing climate change is coming for them too, but that most will deny it until they are trapped in a fire or hurricane, just like those COVID deniers screaming about it being a hoax as their lungs failed.

As someone who lived in that area and has been watching the chatter about it on Facebook, no such self reflection has occurred and I've been told I'm an a****** for even asking the question right now. Edit: Just for anyone that comes to this comment later, there are now Fire Truthers in that community. They don't believe the official story that a party ballon hitting an electrical wire and a guy welding a fence started the fires. They think FEMA is preventing local firefighters from putting out the fires. They think the goal is to get residents to 'sell their land.' (To whom is never specified.) And my favorite one is that the fire is in retaliation for the county pushing back on a data center being built.
33
RichardKicker 13 hr ago +1
"To whom is never specified" Data center construction. GA residents have been fighting against the construction of data centers because of power demands and ecological damage with basically nothing added to local coffers to off set the negatives. There are two big fires (Brantley county and Pineland Rd) caused by a balloon and sparks from a chain hanging off the back of a service truck (I think) being listed as the cause. The bigger problem is the freakish drought going on in an area that is usually more humid than the crack of Satan's ass. The undergrowth and such was not really mismanaged or anything like that, just a couple of freak accidents in the middle of an unusual dry spell making everything extremely easy to catch flame.
1
TiredOfBeingTired28 1 day ago +6
Very tiny few might. Most will not, someone at fault from the standard of immigrants, gays, trans, etc. in the area or just existing in the country caused it all. Same as every down turn in economy, job market, lost of job, etc. Throughout history. Never upward always the dirty inhuman immigrant, or the slaves, or the imagrants again, cathlics, Irish, Italians, native Americans "very briefly" on and on but ever the actual cause of the situation.
6

No, of course not. There have been no end of floods, tornadoes, and other natural disasters in red states, and they never talk about sin or God's judgment when it happens in a ruby-red county. They have never displayed any propensity to develop any self-awareness.

Snow had to fly to put out Bear Gulch II last year here in Washington. Burned 31 square miles between Fourth of July and November when they finally got it out. 20,000+ acres. And they almost had it out three weeks in, but hot spots and bad weather / wind fuckin’ sent it. The videos of the DNR planes dropping Phos-chek on it were wild. Fire height off the ground must’ve been 500’.

bakeacake45 1 day ago -2
No, no, and no. First and foremost pour salt water on your land, your forests, you KILL everything, and the salt is retained in the soil so nothing grows back for 5-10 years. Second, how are you going to get the water to the fire? Pumps, trucks, aircraft - not the salt water corrodes everything from rubber gaskets to anything metal.

50
cyanescens_burn 1 day ago +48
It’s beyond accepting it. It requires accepting changes in lifestyle that most feel entitled to, and that corporations will cling to selling to people until they drive the ecosystem into the ground, then they’ll sell some “cure” for those conditions too.

It's the classic case of "those that can, won't, and those that will, can't." The average person would probably love to see funding directed to climate change prevention, and disaster relief, but they can't direct government funding. The average politician is so busy insider trading and taking bribes from oil companies that they're not going to do a damn thing about it.

12
Mormanades 1 day ago +6
These 2 fires within the state are the most dangerous and largest fires CURRENTLY within the US and due to dry condition with the soil, it is expected to continue for months. They would need 7-8 inches of rain but the state is in a drought so that is insanely optimistic. Good thing FEMA was dismantled!

IRemember the "boring" Democrat Al Gore was talking about climate change 26 years ago. But the media we consume convinced millennials that he was no different from George Bush and that both sides are the same.  26 years ago, the same propoganda that is pushed against Democrats today was pushed back then. Even when a Presidential candidate was telling you what was going to happen.  Just like in 2024, but since media social or otherwise says both parties are the same people listen to that nonsense. >https://gabbyawards.blogspot.com/2019/11/saturday-night-live-season-25-reviews_27.html >"Al Gore is practicing addressing the nation from the White House with some encouragement from Bill Clinton, both played by Darrell. Will comes in as George W. Bush, drinking a beer and partying with some frat brothers. The two discover that they have a remarkable amount of similarities. They're both for the death penalty and cutting welfare and against campaign finance reform and gun control. They decide that if they combine forces they can create the ultimate middle of the road candidate. We get a time passage montage and then out pops Horatio from a cocoon as Al W. Bush-Gore. He gives a battle cry for the mediocre and shouts "Live from New York...

Bernie would have been fascinating but there was a long way to get there, unfortunately. It felt close, but there would have been plenty of hurdles between him and not only winning but getting what he wanted done.  Meanwhile Al Gore was right there on the finish line but the SC just plucked it away from him. And 25 years ago was a much different outlook in Congress in terms of working with the president of the opposite party, so he actually could have gotten climate change stuff done.
