Southern Bastards!? There’s a name I not heard in a while. One of the creators got cancelled and that’s why the series was left incomplete.

Is that good or bad? 👀

I mean he's an extremely pleasant individual and gives off the aura of a individual who is just trying to be a nice person.... which is the exact opposite of coach boss... it could be a career defining performance or just "decent" one but I doubt it will be bad

My first thought: **They're both too young for those roles.** Then I looked it up: Bacon is 67 (?!) and McGraw is 58. So now...I still feel their ages are wrong? Bacon's 5-10 years too young to be a Vietnam vet, but that could just be solved by setting the story in a Pre-Trump America, which could be the right call for a few reasons. But a key plot point is that those two men were in high school at the same time; Bacon having a full decade on McGraw pushes that a bit. But they'll manage. They'll probably make both of them look thoroughly haggard and dusty as shit, and the ages will even out. The same is true for Kellyman; she's an Afghanistan Marine veteran, so her being 27 right now would make that a pretty hard sell. Again, my guess is that they'll just set the entire thing a decade-plus ago, which would allow everyone's ages to more or less fit (and McGraw will need to act the f*** out of his role). If McGraw can pull off Coach Boss, he'll probably win an Emmy. On paper, he's something between Al Swearengen from *Deadwood* and Coach Taylor from *Friday Night Lights*. He's a deeply crusty and ruthless character in the comic, but I can see the show using McGraw's star power to give him a layer of charm and charisma, with the bad shit just hiding underneath the surface. It's also, pretty infamously, an unfinished story. The main artist, Jason Latour, was exposed for being a sex pest and vanished from public for a while. He's now slowly back to working in comics, but the book's main writer, Jason Aaron, seemingly has no interest in working with him again. So the series has been on hiatus for over half a decade now. The comic was very clearly gearing up for its final arc, and hopefully the fact that Aaron (and understandably but disappointingly, Latour) are attached as Exec Producers means that Aaron will be able to give the writer's room notes and guidance on where it was all going to land if the show ends up surpassing the source material.

Ok, literally yes. But also, actors regularly do not play their age.

Yup! And my post is basically me talking myself through that in real-time as a fan of the comics. Sorry for bringing you along for the ride. I'm skeptical of McGraw; the show kind of rests on his character.

All good! It was a sound thought process tbf. Funnily enough like 5 minutes before I saw this post I did the math on the youngest Vietnam vets for something entirely unrelated. Agreed on McGraw but Hulu feels to pretty consistently have a good casting team. I can't think of the last Hulu show that felt miscast. And for such an important part, I'd hope it was heavily scrutinized.

Wait, didn’t they cancel the comic? What is the plot supposed to be? Last thing I remember the veteran woman just returned to town.

I only read the first volume of Southern Bastards but I really liked it. Hope the show is good Image in the 2010s was putting out non-stop bangers that were tailor made to be prestige TV shows. Glad that the TV industry has finally caught up.

Erin was so bad in The Falcon, I am not sure I can take her showing up in anything. But she was pretty good as Eponine in a Les Miserables show, so maybe it was just the material. Or maybe she was just horribly miscast on the Falcon. She was like 14 and playing the heavy.
