Arcadia, CA. In case anyone was looking here for the actual name of the town.

Haha seriously? I have visited there and that place is a nexus of oddities. Gross wealth disparity wrapped in a bow of boredom. Like nothing is wrong and everything is wrong at the same time.

Thank you for summing up what I think in a concise fashion. I could only describe it as having a weird feeling.

Glowingtomato May 12, 2026 +174
I grew up there in the 90s and it was wild watching all the old white people move out and the Asian people tearing down the homes to build mansions. That place had a huge cultural shift in the late 90s-early 10s when my family moved away. They have some lots that are normal width but super long. We lived in a back house on my Grandparents property that had 3 full sized houses. The people who bought it paid like 3 million and tore all three houses down to build one massive home.

Same exact thing is happening in Bayside Queens, NYC

LetsTryAnal_ogy May 12, 2026 +59
> Asian people tearing down the homes to build mansions It's such a weird thing to see, too. Like, you'll see these old houses from the '60s or '70s, and then right next door is this big, beautiful mansion on, like, a 6,000-square-foot plot. The streets are poverty, wealth, poverty, wealth, poverty, wealth in houses, and the next street over is abandoned homes or buildings, and then the next street is these beautiful oak-covered streets. It's so f****** bizarre.

ramenshoyu May 12, 2026 +6
Why did people move away?
6
superbity May 13, 2026 +11
Because white conservatives don't want to live in minority prevalent areas. Same thing happened/is happening right now in Irvine.

House 1M is c**** in socal
184
_Burning_Star_IV_ May 12, 2026 +50
I wouldn't really say c****, it's just the baseline for an detached home. If you'll settle for a townhouse or condo you can get them for less than a million.
50
IceNein May 12, 2026 +26
No, 1M is not “the baseline for a detached home.” You are out of your mind. I live in Ventura which is a seaside community, and thus commands higher home values than the rest of the state, to the point that it’s always ranked in the top 10 most unaffordable places to live, and I would say the average detached home values here is between $750 and $1M, so $1M is *absolutely not* “the baseline for a detached home.” The ***median*** home price is $900k https://instamortgage.com/california-median-home-price-by-county-updated-october-2025/

9
I-tell-horrible-joke May 12, 2026 +4
I feel the same way driving through the Palisades or Newport Coast. When I first moved back to socal after living in the valley for 13 years, I had a shitty car. It ran well, it was clean, it was just a 97 or some shit. I got pulled over so many times visiting my family in Newport Coast and in the surrounding areas. First question was always, "what the hell are you doing here?" Then followed up by, any drugs in the car? Can I look?

lots of very wealthy Chinese expats have resettled in Arcadia in the past 15 yrs. These are the owners & subcontractors of all those slave-labor factories cranking out junk for Shein & Teemu who were able to stash their money stateside before Beijing cracked down on currency flight from China.

What are the wrong parts of it to you? It’s a very typical California suburb imo, just with the caveat that it has a very large Asian population like the other cities in the area. Has probably the only mall that actually gets foot traffic in all of LA county at this point
24
Trippingthru99 May 12, 2026 +5
What are you talking about? Glendale Galleria, Americana and The Grove always have decent foot traffic. Two of them are ‘outdoor malls’ but still.
5
SeytSeven May 12, 2026 +12
I remember it being impossible to buy into the area in the 00s due to them only selling to asians.
12

Are you saying the white people that lived in Arcadia only sold to Asians?

For anyone who doesn’t know the story, she ran an online news site aimed at the Chinese-American community in California. She was spreading propaganda by publishing articles that the PRC government instructed her to post, including one that stated the Uyghurs were not being mistreated.
3226
AwakenedSol May 12, 2026 +665
To add, the part that makes this criminal is her failure to register as a foreign agent. You can post any articles you want, but if you do it at the behest of a foreign government you have to register.

21
Parahelix May 13, 2026 +2
No, there was one media company, and it was so blatantly obvious that it was a cutout for Russia that even those morons would recognize what they're doing. They were given a dossier of a guy who doesn't exist, who supposedly works for a bank that doesn't exist, and were paid nearly half a million dollars per month to post a few videos with Russian propaganda, and link to propaganda websites made to look like legitimate news sites. The DoJ almost certainly held off prosecuting at that point because it was close to the election and Republicans have been working the refs hard for a decade and would scream bloody murder that it was an attempt to steal the election. Then after the election, Republicans had no interest in prosecuting them, clearly. And that's before we even get into Maria Butina and Mike Flynn. Republican hypocrisy is just off the charts.

mu_zuh_dell May 12, 2026 +20
Maria Butina, one of the key figures in that scandal, and who was convicted and served a whopping several months in prison, is now a member of the Russian Duma (national legislature). She was sleeping with (among others) Paul Erickson, who was later convicted of fraud and something else that I can't remember, who was then pardoned by Trump at the end of his first term. No Russian connection, tho.

Eric Hovagim had a [great video](https://youtu.be/x--iH9bB-1Q?si=smBO26IaUnA2qwVm) on this! This woman was just publishing news out of China that looked good. If we applied this standard across the board, essentially the entire media sphere in America would be in prison as unregistered agents for Israel, but... For some reason, that gets a different standard applied! 🙃
81
veeyo May 12, 2026 +50
It isn't just "news that looked good". It was literally Chinese propaganda she was instructed by the government to publish.
50
luckyshot98 May 12, 2026 +37
And CNN and Fox are Israeli propaganda. I had teachers show it to us in school, and it's on in government offices. The double standard is the issue, propaganda is all bad though.
37
NoTeslaForMe May 12, 2026 +2
Free speech allows you, Fox, and CNN to say any fool thing.  If you think that Iran's viewpoints are right on, you can echo similar viewpoints.  But they can't supervise, direct, control, finance, or subsidize your doing so, or you'd be a foreign agent, operating illegally if you didn't register as such.  It's not a "double standard," but an authentic difference, meant to preserve free speech while still fighting foreign influence.

3uphoric-Departure May 12, 2026 +7
And how do you think Western stenographers operate? Lol
7
BucketOfGlue May 12, 2026 +6
Did you mean to say journalist and got the term mixed up in your head, or do you think "stenographer" is a synonym?
6
3uphoric-Departure May 12, 2026 +3
It’s intentional. “Stenographer” is a derogatory term to describe Western “journalists” who’s job is to just repeat (or transcribe like a stenographer) official statements from Israeli politicians and agencies (like the IDF) and pass it off as independent journalism. This stuff is exactly why people end up suspicious of both governments now If she knowingly acted as an agent then throw the book at her, but every few months there seems to be another story showing how deep the spying game goes between major countries Feels like normal people are just stuck in the middle while intelligence agencies all play chess with each other

I mean. She was the mayor of a town of 50,000 and has only been the mayor since February. She's not exactly the speaker of the house. Yeah, get her out. (She resigned) Now lets look at who senators, congresspeople, and cabinet level officials work for?
1002
Spectre197 May 12, 2026 +379
Also noted she was never voted in to be mayor, the township has a council and the mayor position rotates every year or so.
379
Tad0422 May 12, 2026 +30
Pretty common for CA cities. Most are run by city council governments and then it rotates or they vote who gets to be "mayor". Honestly more title than anything else as everything takes council approval. Living there more of my life and I honestly can't remember who even was mayor at any one time. Now I live in TN and mayor is a big deal out here locally. EDIT - Ah yes the city manager mentioned below. That was the guy with the power and typically appointed by the city council.
30
certciv May 12, 2026 +5
In a lot of cities, it's the city manager that has the real executive power, making the rotating mayor more of a figure head role.
5
ThrownAway17Years May 12, 2026 +2
Pretty common for most small to mid size cities actually. More common than a voted in mayor I think.

it's of course proof that every single Democrat is colluding in a shadow cabal to undermine the United States of Trump. I heard from a very reputable source (libs of tiktok) that AOC hired her personally all the way from New York.
42
OldeArrogantBastard May 12, 2026 +6
Unfortunately doesn’t matter how small the town was or whether she was voted in or not. You got the headline “California” “mayor” and “China spy” for people to solely focus on.
6
Podo13 May 12, 2026 +5
And also, everything she's being investigated before was prior to her being Mayor and they apparently believe she ceased operating as a spy before assuming the position.
5
Fap2theBeat May 12, 2026 +21
Spy is a pretty strong word. The article said she was sharing CCP propaganda on her news website. It doesn't say she was collecting confidential government intel and sharing it with the CCP.
21
Greyh4m May 12, 2026 +6
This is the detail that will be lost in all this. She was pushing Chinese Government talking points denying genocide. Not saying she did no wrong, but it's not like we haven't seen plenty of Russian talking points stinking up the halls in D.C.
6
GoarSpewerofSecrets May 12, 2026 +6
I mean, you don't just cease.
6
Podo13 May 12, 2026 +4
Generally, I agree. But her job was just to post stuff on a site she was helping run. She could have just stopped working on the site and her operations would have ceased (which is possible that she stopped once she was elected and focused on that). To my knowledge, it's not like she was actively feeding China classified information from her government job and just said "Oh, nah, I stopped doing that on this date, trust me". She was being fed propaganda to push through to the website, and once she was done with the website, there was nothing else for her to really do for them. Note: This is all predicated on the idea that she stopped being affiliated with the website. I haven't read enough about it to see if that's true or not.
4
Khatib May 12, 2026 +88
> She was the mayor of a town of 50,000 and has only been the mayor since February. Also of note from the article > “We want to be clear: this investigation concerns individual conduct, and the charges are for **conduct that ceased after Ms. Wang was sworn into office in December 2022**,” he said. So she wasn't even doing this once she was on the council. Her campaign treasurer was also caught up on this and already pled guilty, so that is a little extra sketchy on her campaign. They were also in a relationship and engaged, so one likely drug in the other. But a small city council spot can't require *that* much money to run for, can it? I can't imagine they paid her all that much money. Also of note, **she was a republican** and only switched parties to run for the city council in 2022. Which is extra sketchy for the campaign. So for that two year period she was being paid by China, she was a republican, and in my mind, she still is. She only changed the letter to get ahead with misdirection.
88
freedfg May 12, 2026 +15
I mean. I don't believe the "the conduct ceased after sworn into office" line. Like. No no it's cool, she's a spy...but not like....once she has influence lol. I'm just saying this is a minor story of a small towns local corruption being blown up national for 2 reasons. 1. Painting all democrats as spies 2. Trump is visiting China, so we need some fresh "China bad" story so when he inevitably fucks something up they can fall back on that.
15
awry_lynx May 12, 2026 +19
wdym you don't believe it the charge was her sharing ccp propaganda on her public platform. that didn't continue happening after she was sworn in. she wasn't spying, she was sharing propaganda. which again, IS BAD, but absolutely does not qualify as spying. you don't have to believe it, it's just a fact - she was sharing pro-China propaganda from the CCP about Uyghur genocide denial, that's not like, some secret hidden behavior, that's the whole thing.
19
Osiris32 May 12, 2026 +2
> But a small city council spot can't require that much money to run for, can it? How much could be, Michael? $10? You'd be surprised how much money can be dumped into even small local campaigns.

Arcadia has had a TON of Asians move in. My dad is from there and we just sold the house in the last year. I was spending a lot of time there recently, but it’s kinda been like the last 20 years. It’s just kinda a nicer neighborhood near Pasadena, so lots of 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants who do well for themselves move in, which can mean a lot of Asians.  My grandma would call them “the Jews of Arcadia”. Which is rather racist, or at least offensive, but it was a noticeable shift in demographics from the past early 50s when she moved into that house. lol.
13
MagicPistol May 12, 2026 +3
I dated a Chinese girl in college who grew up in Arcadia. She said her house had 8 bathrooms which blew my mind lol.
3
Wonderful_Tip_5577 May 12, 2026 +3
My dad would always talk about his neighbor that had an elevator.  The house my dad grew up in was a 3 bedroom/2 bath ranch house. But McMansions started getting built around it in the late 90s or so. It’s been a nice area my whole life, but the house was never anything special, but lots of neighboring wealth.

The larger point is just how vulnerable we are to infiltration by even the most mildly competent people. See how far Sacha Cohen got pretending to be IDF, he was basically given all access to our leaders and was twisting them to his will, as a joke. Every time a story like this happens, it tells us there are many more out there who are still operating secretly. We are a weak nation pretending to be strong.

Am I crazy for thinking this had more to do with China's surveillance of "their own people" (by their definition and beliefs not mine) than it did with information gathering on the US? I spent a few months over there on an internship and let me tell you. The great firewall of China is real, and many of the people I met had a "we're being watched" type mentality on their daily goings
42
NepoKitty May 12, 2026 +2
You are not crazy, it is targetting "their own people" -- though less about surveillance (there's that, but with other parties), but influence by shaping information. Websites like Wang's "US News Center" are designed to serve as alternative media targetting largely first gen Chinese Americans to combat pro-Democracy voices (e.g. China Digital Times), pro-Falun Gong voices (e.g. Epoch Times, New Tang Dynasty TV), Chinese editions of Western media that could be seen as being critical toward Beijing (e.g. NYT, BBC, DW, RFI), etc. It's similar, though different, to the China Daily inserts in certain English papers.

During the 80s, the Soviets had so many volunteer spies at the US State Department they had to quit recruiting and turned down a lot of volunteers. Any other country has recruitment problems. The USA has the opposite problem - too many volunteering to be spies on their own country.
67
mightylordredbeard May 12, 2026 +5
I remember seeing a documentary once about the Cold War and it talked about how many Soviet assets there were in the US that even the soviets had trouble keeping track of them all. Keeping records of all of them wasn’t an easy task because they didn’t want to have paper trails leading back to their assets, but they needed a way to let Moscow keep track of them. Occasionally something would get lost in translation or transport so even Moscow wasn’t 100% sure of how many spies they actually had in the US.
5
OutInABlazeOfGlory May 12, 2026 +11
Look at what the US does to its people and you won’t be that surprised. I wouldn’t be a spy, but that’s just because I don’t want to get involved in fights between governments when I want both of them destroyed.
11
ExtruDR May 12, 2026 +32
Not that there has been any reason to ponder this, but I don’t see any reason to get involved in bullshit between ruling regimes at huge personal risk to yourself and your family. This is no different than how I feel about military service. It is one thing to sacrifice to defend your community, your family, your personal culture, etc. it is another thing to put your life on the line so that rich and powerful people in one country or another can be more rich and powerful. Seriously. I mean. Does giving China (for example) intel actually help Chinese people? Probably not. It helps the political elite of that country. Patriotism is a fabrication that is meant to trick you into becoming cannon fodder.
32
SavageAdage May 12, 2026 +19
Its more that in this day and age, Patriotism means very little because most nations aren't fighting for existence anymore. Patriotism in Ukraine has real weight to it, Patriotism in America likely means you're a dumbass at best in most situations.

It's not two-sided like you're implying. US spies in China all disappeared. They're gone
6
YggdrasilFree May 12, 2026 +3
The crazier part is that the commander of the FBI's Counterintelligence & Espionage department, designed to spot foreign agents like this... is literally a Soviet spy. Roman Rozhavsky, born Роман Рожавский in the USSR, is fluent in Russian and specializes in capturing foreign agents that would interfere with Russia's goals within America. He's scrubbed nearly his entire history before 2006 from the internet as well.
3
GreatGojira May 12, 2026 +3
Things like this is where it's good to be suspicious of both parties. Anyone can be an agent for x country as Trump is Russia's b**** or Hasan is China's b****. It's important to have skepticism of every politician. Hell Democrats been screwed over by bad actors like Sinema, Manchin, and Fetterman. I hope Platner wins in Maine, but it is important to see what he does if he wins.

People tell me how much more they trust alternative news sources because "at least they aren't part of the global conspiracy". But then look at this - who funds these? At best it's a crackpot in their basement with a grudge, and at worst it's a *foreign government using it as a puppet*
90
SteamedGamer May 12, 2026 +13
To ironically use the words of Ronald Reagan, "Trust, but verify." - Never trust just a single news source - get multiple viewpoints and corroboration from multiple outlets. We're in a new era where readers have to do more of their own gruntwork of evaluating the "truthiness" of a source...
13
jacksbox May 12, 2026 +2
Absolutely. But it doesn't feel like critical thinking skills are tracking with the times... A cynical person would say that there's always going to be a certain group who can't think critically - what are we supposed to do about them? Some of them vote.
2
saera-targaryen May 12, 2026 +3
Not all alternative news sources are equal. We should be looking for *independent* news sources that are not owned by billionaires and are run by the journalists themselves. It does not mean random blogs and youtube channels with zero credentials.  So, good examples are places like 404 Media, Zeteo, Dropsite News, etc. Publications that are not just a subsidiary of disney or fox.
3
Greenfire32 May 12, 2026 +2
We trust alternative news sources "more." That doesn't mean we trust alternative news sources completely. You still have to fact check and use critical thinking. You can't just turn your brain off purely because it's not a mainstream source. For every good source of information there are at least 5 bad ones.

Is this the same Cali town that had like two dozen babies born by American surrogates to a Chinese couple? Found link: yes it is. 21 babies https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/21-children-birthed-by-surrogate-mothers-found-in-arcadia-home/3746013/

Shit. There are 26 babies now.
9
ZenMasterOfDisguise May 12, 2026 +3
this one sentence in that article pretty much says it all > “There are no laws against hiring multiple surrogate mothers at a time,” Fell said. “… but as we can see, this case highlights inherent dangers of commercial surrogacy.”
3
Babylon4All May 12, 2026 +37
So we can investigate our politicians for being foreign assets and charge them accordingly…..  Gestures towards Congress and the White House….
37
Sherwoodfan May 12, 2026 +5
your candidate needs to fit a minimum of a certain amount of criteria in order to be eligible for justice. Woman, not white, left wing, left wing state, not a close ally of a certain family...

Jesus, the whataboutism is strong in this thread. That shit sucks too, but we are talking about this woman.
14
MoonliteJaz May 12, 2026 +36
"Whataboutism" is not what this is. We know that propaganda is influencing US politics. If there are areas where its not being addressed and someone points that out, thats not whataboutism. Thats just a legitimate critique of the system. No one is saying she shouldnt be charged, just that its pretty weak for the government to not take the same actions against other actors working on behalf of other countries.
36
liquordeli May 13, 2026 +3
Thats not really what whataboutism is. Parent comment isnt arguing for a position in a debate or responding to a personal accusation and using an unrelated point to deflect. They're just bringing up an adjacent topic in a conversation.
3
304rising May 12, 2026 +16
Yeah these people are idiots or bots. It’s completely fine/normal to celebrate a foreign agent being removed from our government no matter which side of the aisle you’re on.
16
sufficiently_tortuga May 12, 2026 +8
We (human users) really need to be more aware of how much of this site is just programed content bouncing off eachother, trying to make us feel some type of way. Problem is when you get people who think they're immune to propaganda or worse, when they know its propaganda but they agree with it so it gets a pass. I suggest start bloccking accounts that *always* post about one type of anger inducing news.
8
saera-targaryen May 12, 2026 +4
Pointing out hypocrisy and a double standard is not whataboutism. It is a critique of the system hat produced both this case and many other cases. The idea that we aren't allowed to analyze where this case sits in our broader culture is reductive.

3
Bleezy79 May 12, 2026 +4
I cetainly hope they do a major investigation into the people around her to ensure there are no more foreign agents in our government.
4
the_ruffled_feather May 12, 2026 +7
The more I learn about this sort of thing I’m always surprised how little spies and foreign agents get paid. Back in the 80’s a high ranking CIA officer compromised hundreds of agents who were tortured and murdered in the space of about 10 years for a couple million. Ames was his name if interested.

Context/background >According to her plea agreement, Wang and a colleague, Yaoning “Mike” Sun, worked on behalf of government officials for the People’s Republic of China from the end of 2020 to 2022 to promote their interests by promoting pro-PRC propaganda in the U.S. Sun is serving a four-year sentence after he pleaded guilty to the same charge last October. He was also listed in campaign filings as the treasurer for Wang’s 2022 election campaign. >Wang and Sun operated the news website U.S. News Center, aimed at the Chinese American community, and were instructed by Chinese government officials to post pro-PRC content on it. >In one instance in June 2021, a government official sent Wang a link to a letter to the editor published in the Los Angeles Times written by the consul general of the People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles. >The piece refuted reports of the persecution, forced labor, and abuse of Uyghers in China’s Xinjiang province, stating, “There has never been genocide in Xinjiang or forced labor in the region’s cotton fields or any other sector.” >Within minutes, Wang shared the link on her news site.

The ones doing far more than sharing some articles on a website. They make it sound like she was selling nuclear secrets. Fine, hold her to account, but if she gets ten years then they should be getting life.
3
AfterSchoolOrdinary May 12, 2026 +8
China blackmails people and uses their family back home as leverage. We should definitely do our best to stop this from happening but let’s not pretend that most of the people caught are spies of any consequence. They’re usually desperate.
8
Studious_Gluteus May 12, 2026 +2
That's fascinating. Where can I learn more about that?

Google. (China blackmail citizens) has to be a good enough search to learn something new.

this keeps happening btw, some east asian country had this scandal happen a couple years back, she was smuggled into their country as a child, given a stolen identity and then groomed to be in politics.
2
moinatx May 12, 2026 +3
[CNN.com](http://CNN.com) failed to report her party affiliation. This is usually part of a standard news story. She switched from longstanding Republican to Democrat in 2022. I'm not a Republican nor do I support Trump. Sad that I feel the need to add that caveat when pointing out that this fact should have been included and probably would have been if she had turned out to be a Republican. Do better, CNN.
3
ykeogh18 May 12, 2026 +3
So she was a Republican and Democrat
3
moinatx May 12, 2026 +3
Currently a Democrat but because she switched parties recently and was known as a Republican though much of her political career it seems fair to explain that fact.
3
Wonderfullyboredme May 12, 2026 +3
Funny how we can charge but every republican and democratic promoting a certain country in a certain location are allowed to get away with it.
3
taylorhildebrand May 12, 2026 +7
How is this not treason?
7
Clever_Unused_Name May 12, 2026 +16
Because the "treason" is very narrowly defined in the U.S. constitution: > Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. China is considered a strategic adversary, but not *legally* an "enemy" in the constitutional sense of treason.

this is gonna suck because people don't get the legal definition of "agent for a foreign country" and think she was probably parking CCP tanks in everyone's garage is it wrong and should she be persecuted? sure. are the media and people gonna react proportionately to the crime? lol no
