I'm mostly surprised they managed to get an indictment. This administration hasn't had the best track record for competent prosecutors.

Dinker54 Apr 21, 2026 +564
The thing is that indictments are really easy to obtain if there’s any kind of case to be made as it’s a very one sided process.

Alwayssunnyinarizona Apr 21, 2026 +381
We've already seen a ham sandwich indicted, and a failed conviction.
381
meatball77 Apr 21, 2026 +130
I thought they couldn't get the indictment for the guy who threw the sandwich
130
fujiesque Apr 21, 2026 +164
I believe he was indicted and tried and found totally adorable
164
gmen6981 Apr 22, 2026 +7
no, they were never able to get an indictment even after 3 tries. They wound up throwing some cheesy misdemeanor charges on him ( don't require Grand Jury indictment) and he was found not guilty.
7
RellenD Apr 21, 2026 +75
Not from the Grand jury. They tried him on lesser charges that didn't need one
75
Mikestopheles Apr 21, 2026 +105
So both really. Failed to indict a ham sandwich. And then, after trying again as a misdemeanor, lost the case.
105
bunchout Apr 21, 2026 +45
I believe it was a Turkey Sub. Had it been a ham sandwich, all bets would have been off
45
SpiceEarl Apr 21, 2026 +22
If it were a ham sandwich, they would have claimed the federal officer was Jewish and charged it as a hate crime…

A grand jury has zero defense input. So prosecution can put illegal evidence foward to get an indictment.
170
Krampus_noXmas4u Apr 21, 2026 +42
So true, they also try to trump up evidence they do find for bigger charges. Was on a grand jury where cops were going for intent to distribute Marijuana. Evidence was a scale, small baggies and a small amount of pot like not even 1/4 ounce. We rejected it. They came back next month and asked why we rejected the charges and told them there was not enough pot evidence to even remotely suggest guy was dealing (pot at least...)

TodayInStupidity Apr 22, 2026 +29
TRUMP'd up charges are this administration's MO. Push their weight around, throw shit against the wall and see what sticks.
29
Forward-Surprise1192 Apr 22, 2026 +2
In high school that sounds exactly like the amounts I was distributing lol
2
Geaux2020 Apr 21, 2026 +69
The Trumped up charges don't usually go anywhere. It's really gotten out of hand.
69
steppedinhairball Apr 21, 2026 +74
But it wastes their money in defending themselves and can scare off donors. That's the point.
74
willstr1 Apr 21, 2026 +40
It also wastes our (the taxpayers) money. We really need a mechanism to hold the members of the regime personally accountable for all of our money they have stolen for their crimes

A good prosecutor can indict a ham sandwich.
1
IronBoomer Apr 21, 2026 +1235
So let me get this straight: The DoJ has been losing competent lawyers left and right who refuse to indulge in politically motivated witch hunt cases. The remaining charlatans who work there thought they wanted to go to war against the SPLC, some of the best civil rights lawyers in the country? Oh, this is going to be a disaster
1235
EggNo289 Apr 21, 2026 +642
The strategy isn't to actually get people locked up / found guilty. The strategy is to drag them through long drawn out legal battles that drain them of resources, weaken their resolve, take their efforst and energirs away from other things that the admin doesn't want challenged, and drag them through the court of public opinion. This the kind of legal dirty work Trump has used for decades.
642
Ludwigofthepotatoppl Apr 21, 2026 +297
you can weaken businesses' resolve by dragging things out like that, but the SPLC is full of people who have seen this coming, and are very, very unlikely to surrender.
297
Richard_Berg Apr 21, 2026 +99
Still takes time & money that could be put toward their actual mission.
99
JacknSundrop Apr 22, 2026 +130
I would say fighting fascism like the lawsuit is their mission.
130
nictusempra Apr 22, 2026 +28
That the midterms are right around the corner is not coincidental, in this instance. Any hours they can steal away from the challenges to their civil rights abuses there are the goal for the DOJ.
28
cogman10 Apr 22, 2026 +67
Time yes, money? Ehh.. This is a bit like suing the ACLU (In fact, it wouldn't be surprising to find the ACLU working with the SPLC). They have a pretty deep legal pool who donate their services already. The thing that makes lawsuits expensive is finding legal representation. That's not a problem here.
67
Nick_crawler Apr 22, 2026 +58
I would have to imagine as well that the SPLC is about the experience its largest donor surge in a generation thanks to the indictment, so yeah resources aren't an issue.
58
dmcnaughton1 Apr 22, 2026 +19
I signed up today for a recurring donation once I heard the news on the radio. Literally pulled over into a Lowe's parking lot to sign up. SPLC is a big part of the post-civil rights era safeguard against extremist groups.
19
FreedaKowz Apr 22, 2026 +6
I just signed up for monthly donation also. Let's make this their biggest fundraiser ever!
6
sprintercourse Apr 22, 2026 +2
The indictment seeks forfeiture of all the funds which are supposedly part of the “fraud.” This is, in fact, an attempt to seize SPLC’s funds so it cant perform any of its mission.
2
garbageemail222 Apr 22, 2026 +14
I think it will result in a surge of donations and actually be beneficial for them. Still a gross abuse of power and a travesty of justice that they even have to worry at all though.
14
ChiLolla28 Apr 22, 2026 +2
Yes - look at what happened to Acorn
2
CallmeMefford Apr 21, 2026 +12
Right? The people who work there do it on purpose. They want this. I’m sure they’re a little nervous right now, but this will only strengthen heir resolve.
12
AnonymousDork929 Apr 22, 2026 +38
Also they know that the maga world won't actually follow the case itself. Theyll just see the headline on Fox news that the SPLC was indicted and then they'll never hear about it again so they never know the details of how the trump doj keep getting their asses hand to them. They just see indictments = winning.
38
saints21 Apr 22, 2026 +6
Unless it's Trump who's been indicted God knows how many times...
6
SacrificialBanana Apr 22, 2026 +8
This is exactly what the admin has been doing to clinics that provide gender affirming care to trans people. Some closed because they simply do not have the resources to fight the constant legal battles.
8
joeschmoe86 Apr 22, 2026 +3
You give them to much credit. It's as simple as scoring a few political points and trying to manufacture a left wing scandal on the scale of Epstein, Iran, Venezuela, etc. in the run up to midterms.
3
geekyheart225 Apr 22, 2026 +4
Well, I guess I'll have to donate more to the SPLC and ACLU.
4
wtfElvis Apr 22, 2026 +3
It’s to make them look bad and guilty to their followers. Which is already accomplished. Living in f****** Montgomery where thy are based and seeing local new channels Facebook pages makes you think were back in the Jim Crow days and none of them even know anything about them. But they don’t care. They are told who to hate

The Southern Poverty Law Center is absolutely being targeted by the administration.

It's working as intended. Charged on page 1, exonerated on page 13.
14
MountainFriend7473 Apr 21, 2026 +5
It’s not like *checks notes* these folks actually pass the Bar and have worked on several cases in their time in the field to know how the law works in and out unlike some parts of this grandpa administration going at it like it’s still 1960.
5
decadentbear Apr 22, 2026 +31
And they shared the information with authorities. Also today, the AG said they will not prosecute pedophiles.
31

But they will, checks notes… prosecute people who hold bigots accountable.
2
LaDainianTomIinson Apr 21, 2026 +109
They’re claiming they funneled money into the KKK through informants meant to expose them? This shit doesn’t even make sense
109
Kamp13 Apr 21, 2026 +56
In their logic the Vice departments of many LEOs create crime by sponsoring drug deals with undercover officers.  We must stamp this fraud out too right. Right?
56
MountainFriend7473 Apr 21, 2026 +4
Did they not hear that case about Joanne Marian Sergovia smuggling drugs via using her work computer as other expenses from 2015 to 2022 before being investigated as Border Control intercepted a parcel and fired. Lady was the former executive director of the San Jose Police Officers Association and still jeez. lol Sentenced to  up to 20 years.
4
Photofug Apr 21, 2026 +11
I would think actual cops would definitely not want this precident on the books. Never being able to use paid informants might make things difficult
11
ThreeSilentKings Apr 22, 2026 +67
They were paying informants to get information and the DOJ is somehow spinning this as "supporting" the hate groups? Definitely sounds like spinning a story to attack the SPLC
67
Stodles Apr 22, 2026 +42
By that logic the DOJ, FBI, CIA, police etc. have been using taxpayer money to support cartels, gangs, terrorists, and hostile nations for decades...

>Blanche said the SPLC paid at least $3 million between 2014 and 2023 to people affiliated with the Ku Klux Klan, the United Klans of America, the National Socialist Party of America and other extremist groups. >“The SPLC was not dismantling these groups. It was instead manufacturing the extremism it purports to oppose by paying sources to stoke racial hatred,” Blanche said. Groups built on racial hatred were somehow stoked to commit racial hatred? This is insane
92
Throwupmyhands Apr 22, 2026 +13
Right? Are FBI informants now also the bad guys? This administration is evil, stupid, and nuts.
13
Ok-disaster2022 Apr 22, 2026 +6
So they were taking playbook from Netanyahu? Not really. They had been paying informants which is common and what the US government does all the time.
6
Shelala85 Apr 22, 2026 +2
I believe it’s done in Canada as well. I recall a news investigation into an informant involved with a would-be Muslim terrorist group about him spending his earning on hard drugs.

Hell yeah, Trump using DoJ to go after political adversaries. Preemptively adding /s because the country has lost its damn mind.

flamepanther Apr 21, 2026 +35
To be fair, we live in a world where people were stupid/spiteful enough to actually vote for all this. No matter how insane a sarcastic remark would be if taken seriously, it's probably not off the table for \*\*someone\*\* out there.
35
CatCatchingABird Apr 22, 2026 +17
A group tasked to fight against hate groups recruited paid informants of said groups in order to take down said groups. I don't see anything wrong with this. Government alphabet agencies do the same exact thing.
17
Herkfixer Apr 22, 2026 +8
MAGA is mad that most of their "support" groups keep getting taken down from the inside.
8
Rogue_AI_Construct Apr 21, 2026 +35
Yeah, this is what weaponization of the federal government looks like.
35
KitchenBomber Apr 21, 2026 +40
Just donated $50. They're getting targeted because they've been effective at targeting hate groups that this administration is trying to recruit to their brown shirt echelon.

They’re great. They were experts during January 6. hmm.

Yeah, bet we see the Streisand effect in action here. Lots of people who didn’t know about the SPLC will now donate and support.

I’d bet folding money the DoJ wants the names of the unnamed informants, in addition to distracting and wasting SPLC’s time.
8
caregivernow Apr 22, 2026 +9
So, donate to the SPLC defense fund?
9
Easy_Difficulty_7656 Apr 21, 2026 +22
They do know that that organization is full of real lawyers, right?
22

Yeah that's the point. Now they gotta allocate resources to this instead of other stuff.

5

Ahh, yes, Kash Patel is totally legit and reliable. And 9 (nine) informants? How do they think regular law enforcement discover things that are difficult to investigate? (yes, with informants, the FBI would know). What a fuckin clown show this nation has become. SMDH
13
eric_ts Apr 21, 2026 +13
Another Stormfront priority, along with the rollback of DEI. It’s getting harder to deny the MAGA/Nazi crossover.
13

It was never hard, if you were paying a single ounce of attention.

Most not involved with that movement don’t want to go exploring in their forums. They are… unpleasant. I completely understand what you are saying though. I have been doing the Cassandra thing for the last two and some odd decades regarding the American Nazi movement and their ties to mainstream Republicans.
4

Thanks. First time I have ever noticed one of my own cake days.
4
murphy365 Apr 22, 2026 +14
I'd bet big that SPLC knows their way around a court room. It seems that the DoJ is using their position to violate rights.
14
Impressive_Box4144 Apr 21, 2026 +9
Performative and I’m guessing this will go like his other failed attempts to charge people that did nothing wrong. Criminals in the White House
9
resin85 Apr 22, 2026 +9
Imagine if the Democrats had weaponized the DoJ the way repubs have done.... The Heritage Foundation, CPAC, Turning Point, all the Russian funded outlets.... all massive targets.
9
Herkfixer Apr 22, 2026 +6
That's why Comer had that made up committe about "Weponization of the DOJ", to pretend the other guys did it so they can do it now. Though Biden didnt do most of what was being claimed as illegal by Comer, Trump is openly doing now amd Comer et al are praising and elevating.

absolutely abhorrent. absolutely abominable people in this current white house. white supremacy is being co-signed and supported.
14
Historical-View4058 Apr 21, 2026 +16
For an administration that's essentially on a non-stop retribution tour: The first thing to note is that any accusation is mainly for shock value only and likely has no merit. The point is to create a scandal and let the press adjudicate it. The fact that it has no legal basis means nothing to this DoJ. They are all just performing (read: failing) for the boss.
16
scubachris Apr 22, 2026 +12

So thats what we're doing now? DOJ is just making shit up for funsies? Cool. Malicious prosecution charges anyone?

Lol, the KKK has never gone away. "Racism is so low" yet studies confirm people don't even get job interviews if their names sound Black enough

Any proof besides “watch what trump’s doj said?” It’s a hefty accusation

It wasn’t “funding the KKK”. It was paying informants for information on extremist organizations.

I would have thought that gathering intelligence on fascist and other far-right groups is something that the SPLC's donors are paying for. Given this goes back to the eighties, have the Trump junta found genuine donors who now complain about their money being used this way? I wouldn't be surprised if the Amerifash FBI were planting a straw donor to throw five dollars in a collecting envelope and then turn around and make a criminal complaint but they've only had a couple of years to do it in.

This is more BS from this admin. A whole nothing burger here and I’m sure SPLC will be out of this either by beating this BS indictment or by running out the clock on this alternate reality loving admin. Either way they’ll win.
5
Pheonixmoonfire Apr 22, 2026 +5
White Christian Nationalist administration uses DOJ to attack Southern Poverty Law Group. Not on my bingo card, but also not a surprise. With Trump's approval rating in the shitter, he has to do something to get the Nazis and Klan members back. Will we even have a country left by the time November rolls around?
5
WGEA Apr 21, 2026 +8
Pretty sure with all of the exits at DOJ, they just don't have the guns to go against the SPLC anyway. So, obviously it's just for headlines, as most things are in this administration. They mostly want to slow the SPLC down as they are doing plenty of successful work fighting this admin across the country. Additionally, I'd suspect that at least a few walkouts/firings from the DOJ ended up there. All of this has the makings of an extensive, thorough, and humiliating beatdown coming for this DOJ.

‘Paid’ informants. That’s kind of how they work. Information is bad, no more pay

Quick question from someone on the other side of the world - what does the "poverty" in their name mean? I've always wondered. Is it just that they started specifically to help poor people?

Some of the comments here... geez. The goal of moving this to trial isn't to find the SPLC guilty of "financing hate groups". It's to expose ***who the informants were***.

Oh sure, Kash Patel is just the picture of credibility and trustworthiness. And nine informants, really? How do they think complex investigations usually get solved? That’s literally how law enforcement works; the FBI relies on informants all the time. Honestly, it’s hard not to shake your head at how ridiculous things have gotten. What an absolute circus this country feels like right now.
