I don’t quite understand why the plan is to quickly send the passengers back to their home countries. Wouldn’t 45 days of isolation on Tenerife be a better idea? I understand it’s inconvenient, but we’re still waiting to know if the infection is more contagious than prior strains.

Why does Tenerife have to bite the bullet? What about their residents? They should do quarantine in the boat.

Someone has to and Spain has the resources to care for the ship and its occupants.

Mainland Spain is thousands of miles from the Canaries.
3
SovKom983 days ago
+4
Yes, that’s kinda irrelevant to the issue at hand though. The canaries is still a part of Spain and has the resources of the national government available for to them which is more then the other surrounding countries.
4
Thenedslittlegirl3 days ago
+2
Resources include appropriate facilities to quarantine 143 people for 6 weeks with appropriate staff/infectious diseases protocols. Mainland Spain might have that, but the Canary Islands, which are on a completely different continent, don’t.
That’s like docking on the Falkland islands and saying that Britain has the resources to quarantine everyone.
2
SovKom983 days ago
The passengers aren’t going to be all be held on the Canary Islands they are just parking the ship there for processing. The passengers and crew are going to be transported to their respective countries for care after being tested.

That is the stupidest thing i heard today. You know nothing about Spain and it shows. People there are still homeless from previous natural disasters AND our health system is collapsing due to poor management money embellishment, inmigration and tourism. “Someone has to” it’s so f****** disrespectful to the tenerifean people who have nothing to do with this and have their own shit to deal with. Why don’t you welcome them in your country?
I think it is better that they quarantine there and avoid more death but as we say in Spain “hay días tontos y tontos todos los días”

Regardless of the Spanish health system is facing, the Spanish government likely knows better about then either of us and can has determined to help the ship. No one is forcing Spain to take on this ship they volunteered themselves and they are also getting assistance from WHO so they aren’t dealing with this alone.
The people of tenerfean aren’t at risk due the Andes virus being hard to spread from human to human. The highest priority right now is to get the people on the ship to a port where they can provide the people onboard with the proper assistance which isn’t possible while the ship is at sea.
5
Throuwuawayy3 days ago
The president of the Canary Islands is pushing back against this operation which is coming as a command from the mainland government. The central Spanish government certainly isn’t being forced into anything- they’re the ones forcing Canary Islands to do this.
Downvote all you want but know Canarias is a very, very reluctant hero in all this and everyone else only feels warm and fuzzy about it because they’re glad it isn’t them.

You know nothing about Spain, the Canary Islands or the Spanish Government. The Spanish Government is corrupt and does not care about our islands. It is not clever to disembark anyone from the ship. They can go treat them on the ship, not disembark people when there is a 4 week incubation period. It's madness.

If you look at the cruise customers, you'll understand. These are all somewhat wealthy people on board and probably demanding things and threatening lawyers. Now if it was a Carnival cruise, they'd just let it drift for a couple months until things settled down.

Thats what countries agreed on. Only makes sense that one country doesn’t have to take on for the team, and it’s perfectly doable to have evacuation flights and quarantines in home countries.

Which country would volunteer for such a thing in your opinion?
-7

This shouldn’t be an “ewww, you deal with it” situation. The country where the ship is flagged should take responsibility in conjunction with the WHO.
19
No_Conversation_93254 days ago

But, unfortunately, it’s exactly a situation like that. That’s why Spain has to be the adult in the room. And ok, MV Hondius is Dutch flagged, they already announced that no self isolation for the flight contacts is required. And here is their official stance:
https://www.rivm.nl/en/news/update-hantavirus
Are you sure you want the Netherlands to handle the ship?

Yes, I know it’s exactly how it is, hence my frustration.

It is frustrating indeed, but it is how it is. No government will commit a political suicide by undertaking unpopular actions: hence heavy measure in Spain vs panic control in NL

Leaving it up to 140 different jurisdictions to keep these people isolated and monitored for the next 45 days is much more difficult than monitoring them all in one place. If, and it’s a big if, this virus ends up being more transmissible than thought, this decision could be the difference between a small outbreak and a civilization-altering disaster. When the stakes are that high, why risk it?

Which country has an isolated hospital with 140 ICU units in case all are infected?
-3
bonyponyride4 days ago
+11
If all people are infected, the virus is highly infectious, and they are released throughout the world, then we’re in for cataclysmic disaster. Figure it out, or every ICU around the world could be shut down in a matter of months due to billions of dying people.
11
No_Conversation_93254 days ago

That’s why countries are responsible for making sure their citizens don’t infect others. Spain got mandatory quarantine court order for their citizens, for example. Other countries will decide how they are going to treat the situation. WHO is supervising

I think this is not your typical high rotation short duration cruise maybe the people are a little bit older and not so inclined to social media exposure

It's very strange. Even heard a friend of someone on the cruise talking on the radio , why not the person themselves? I think they have signed something not to speak about it probably not to tarnish the cruise ship reputation or to minimize panic about this virus. It's so strange in these times not to see much from anyone on board even on morning TV shows.

Right but someone must have heard that Aunt Pam is stuck on a cruise ship and will be missing her flight. People would be late to returning for their jobs. News travels fast over friends and family social media accounts and there's also gotta be a bored middle-aged man with his laptop and too much time to kill.

I think I heard that a "travel influencer" had posted at least one video on social media, and that he seemed pretty distressed. Unfortunately, I don’t know any details, but I imagine that this should easily surface with a web search.

The world is far too big (ships are far too slow) for a single quarantine island.
It’s 3-4 months to circumnavigate world by cruise ship at normal speed. At worst they’d be on the opposite side to the quarantine island, so call it 1.5-2 months. And they could hustle, rather than stopping at so many ports, but there’s a limit on how much food they carry.

We could do a floating island that only contains the people from the ship. For structural reasons we would build that island out of metal and outfit it with rooms for sleeping, eating, sanitation, etc. waiting on that island could become boring so we could add some additional things for entertainment...

Good to see authorities still treating it seriously but not overreacting. WHO calling the wider risk low is reassuring, but the isolation measures seem justified given the uncertainty around person-to-person spread
