Be aware that there is no sentence yet. Also, it’s quite a controversial trial, since the judge’s work has been everything but exemplary.

Listnook cheerleading them so hard was infuriating. Yes it is fantastic they called out Trump on his bullshit. They were right to do that. Trump has cut off material aid for Ukraine for his entire presidency... But the US is STILL ahead of Spain in bilateral aid per capita. That war was in large part caused by Europe's extreme underspending on defense, giving Russia an opportunity that Europe would clearly be unable to respond to. It was a war of opportunity. You know where Spain is in military spending in NATO? Dead f****** last. There is a strong case to be made that they are THE cause of a million plus deaths over the past few years. Peace takes work, not just words.
54
Foodball 5 days ago +25
I don’t know if I would chalk up European underspending leading to the war in Ukraine. The Russians expected the war to be over in a few weeks, they never expected any support from the EU, and assumed, largely correctly, the West would be slow to provide support due to the nuclear threat and internal bickering. Even if the EU had a clearer overmatch (which they collectively do) it makes no difference if you presume they will be too slow to react. Still don’t excuse Spanish underspending, they should really be bigger naval players for the EU.

>>I don’t know if I would chalk up European underspending leading to the war in Ukraine. 'Please get rid of all your nukes, don't worry about Russia, we'll protect you' -USA
1
Foodball 5 days ago +2
I’m confused about your comment, what are you responding to? What does this have to do with Ukraine giving up their nuclear weapons?
2
lpottsy 5 days ago +1
One of the many factors that lead to the current situation in Ukraine was the Ukrainians agreeing to get rid of the nuclear weapons based in their country.
1
Foodball 5 days ago +2
Yes, if they still had them there is no way Russia would invade
2
UnknownHero2 5 days ago +1
You are right that Russia expected it to be over quickly, but this logic is a fundamental misunderstanding of how reasoning works at a geopolitical level. Russia HOPES the war ends quickly but all nation state actors factor in multiple types of risk. The odds may have been good they would win quickly, but what about after? Will Europe retake the land (obviously they couldn't). Could they empower Ukraine to retake any land (they obviously can't its been 5 years). When you turn the dial on all these risks down to zero, it absolutely does have impact on Russian decision making.
1
Foodball 5 days ago +4
That’s where the nuclear threat comes in, Russia knows NATO will never invade or try and reclaim Ukraine as they can threaten nuclear annihilation. The EU could have the strongest military in the world but they wouldn’t risk their survival by invading Ukraine to retake it from the Russians. The scenario we’re in now would have benefitted greatly from EU having strong defence stockpiles and industries, which is slowly improving, but the situation we are in now is not what planners on either side expected back in 2022, where both sides expected Ukraine to fold pretty quickly.
4
washag 5 days ago +8
It's also a lot easier to call out Trump's bullshit when your country is in an economic union that largely shields you from retaliation, and there are no real diplomatic repercussions because your relationship with the US is relatively unimportant to anyone. I mean, yay for Spain and everything, but they have as much to lose from campaigning against the US and Israel as the thousands of pro-Palestine protesters in non-US Western cities - nothing. They also have a similarly negligible ability to influence events in any way.
8
Proud-Pilot9300 5 days ago +5
> there is a strong case to be made that they are THE cause of a million plus deaths over the past few years. No there is not. Although Spain and Europe in general should have and still should be doing more to ensure the continents security there is NO case to be made that Russias war of aggression against Ukraine was/is the fault of anyone but Russia. Furthermore the USA played a role in Ukrainian de-nuclearisation, an agreement in which they agreed to provide security guarantees to Ukraine (together with Russia). Those guarantee obligations have been consistently ignored since. First their NATO ambitions were swiftly dismissed by the USA and Germany, then when Putins “little green men” invaded Crimea and “separatists” attacked Donbas the response was comically weak and since the full scale invasion NATO countries have been drip feeding equipment to Ukraine in fear of Russia’s response. Providing Ukraine with enough weapons to keep them fighting but not enough to allow them to liberate their own territory. And that has also stopped from the Americans in 2025 when Trump came in office. Not to mention that he has been consistently trying to pressure Ukraine into accepting a defeat that simply isn’t happening. Is the European/ USA response to the war underwhelming? Yes. Has Europe viewed security as a low priority issue since the fall of the USSR? Absolutely yes. Are Europe and the USA responsible for the death and destruction Russia brought to Ukraine? F*** NO. What we are responsible for is not doing everything possible to throw those murderous dimwits back to their 4th world dictatorship *right now* so they can go back to killing each other rather than innocent Ukrainians.
5
UnknownHero2 5 days ago +2
> there is NO case to be made that Russias war of aggression against Ukraine was/is the fault of anyone but Russia So ya no kidding. But crime is pretty much inevitable if you make it tempting enough. If I leave a stack of $100 dollar bills on the street undefended beyond a sign that says "please don't take this"... That money is going to be gone quickly. The person that stole it is obviously a criminal. But that's a moral conversation for six year olds. Some portion of the fault is mine for leaving a huge stack of money unattended in the middle of the street.
2
LieComfortable7764 5 days ago +1
No one wanted Ukraine to have nuclear weapons, and no one wants them to have them now. The world is a lot better with fewer nuclear weapons.
1
Proud-Pilot9300 5 days ago +1
My point is that Ukraine gave those weapons up in exchange for security guarantees and the guarantors have either invaded them or sat back and let them be invaded.

1
UnknownHero2 5 days ago +2
Its a good comparison. I don't want to accuse Spain of that level of corruption, and they are certainly more democratic, but both countries acted in rampant self interest. Hungary really does need Russian oil, Orban tied up his more corrupt motives with an ounce of truth to convince people to swallow a poison pill. Spain's self interest is that THEY can get away without direct punishment. They can c**** out and they will never be the ones to die for it, they just sacrifice Ukraine, then poland, then germany, then france... THEN its their problem.
2
Tibbaryllis2 5 days ago +2
Wasn’t this explicitly the Spanish governments answer when asked about meeting their EU military spending goals recently? Basically, “why should we? When they’d have to go through all of you first?”

She is charged for "her status as the prime minister’s wife, which benefited the expansion, funding and operations of her university chair, decisions were made that “could have been obtained through a unique exploitation of her relational position.”" Which would literary mean that she as a PM's wife shouldn't be allowed to hold a job, even an unpaid one (like what she did), because her status as an employee might bring benefits to her employer.
77
GoodTeletubby 5 days ago +34
So the charges themselves don't even assert any corrupt conduct on her part, they're just claiming that because she's the PM's wife, any organizational decision that is made in favor of the way she advocates for is de facto corrupt?
34
No_Conversation_9325 5 days ago +23
We don't have all the info yet (they waited for Sanchez to be out of the country and unable to comment), but pretty much yes. It's the same far right that accused her of corruption for working (unpaid) at a university, so... we gotta wait and see. Edit:At the same time the rumours started spreading that she is a man. I couldn't facepalm enough

> with Deep links to right parties bending the law in order to f*** Sánchez. Or it's actual corruption and the "right" leaning judge is doing his job. Why are you not exploring the actual charges of corruption and character assassinating the people bringing accountability.
46
watchitbend 5 days ago +40
Possibly because as I'm reading, it appears that it's the perception of conflict of interest that's driving this, not any actual corruption that's been brought forward with evidence?
40
Legitimate-Garden294 5 days ago +2
The thing is that in Spain the executive branch isn't  really separate from the judicial branch, since judges are picked by the government, and the judges we currently have in the supreme court (that subsequently pick the ones below) were picked by a right wing government (by Partido Popular). This has also recently lead to judge Luis Acayro Sánchez being barred for 10 years, and Baltasar Garzón suffering the same thing (it has already been like 15 years for Garzón, but it's pretty much the same situation) to avoid them punishing right wing corruption.
2
cister532 5 days ago +76
In this case, it's a known corrupt judge. The judicial powers in Spain have a long history of lawfare against left-leaning parties.

This judge have "missed" and "forgotten" to extend the lenght of investigations that lead to trials several times, all those times his mistakes lead to failure to trial big corporations or those connected to right wing politicians. The Supreme Justice in Spain was rooked by a leaked audio where a right wing politician were saying "Don't worry we will be in control of the Second Circuit of the Supreme Justice" which is the circuit that deals with politicians. There are notorious irregularities in this trial, judges above this one have "corrected" his investigation several times, noting that some of the accusations he has made are unfounded and can't be prosecuted. Also this judge proposed a jury trial for the PM's wife, a thing VERY unheard of for the type of crimes she's been accused. She could be corrupt, I wont get into that, but the handling of this investigation is one of the most bizarre and strange Spain has seen in a while. As a matter of fact, this judge has a forced retirement due to old age in june, he could have take his time and pass on the investigation to the next judge, but he's rushing it so he can finish it before being forced to retire

You are going to disagree with anything anyone says (classic right-wing strategy unless it involves a right-wing person), but there are no actual charges, it comes with the PM out of the country, and is 3 days after the PM criticized Israel and Trump.
16

It also comes after trying to deepen ties with China, who's supporting North Korea, Iran, and Russia. Weird.

SouthGlassAgain 5 days ago +1
Nope. This is a several months long ongoing judicial case in Spain. Not saying she is guilty. But this did not appear overnight
1
aadgarven 5 days ago +2
There is not a single proof One of the charges cannot even be commited by her since she is not a public servant. The judge comes from the 4th turn (finger appointed) is husband father and uncle to charges of the opposition
2
IDNWID_1900 5 days ago +2
The case is manufactured, the judge hss been doing it for two years for some really vague charges. The judge (whose daughter and nice are PP councillors in different "ayuntamientos" in Madrid) has to retire at 72 years old by law (he turns 72 this september) so he just wants to start this trial to keep it going until next year's spanish general elections. It's a clear case of lawfare (just like the right wing has been doing forever, specialy with Podemos) and time will prove it.
2
Legitimate-Garden294 5 days ago +1
I don't know if you know this, but in Spain politics pick the judges, so yes, it's a right wing judge.

The comments here are pure hypocrisy. As a Spaniard, it makes my blood boil to see people defending the indefensible just because he is on the left and has played his cards well internationally lately. He is by far the most corrupt president in Spain modern history, with MPs in jail, multiple active investigations, and both his wife and brother under investigation. You have no shame defending this. His wife is beyond guilty; this is not some right-wing conspiracy, it has been going on for a long time. And this goes for the PP too, who had their own corruption scandals during their years in power. We must be critical of both sides, not just when it suits us. Hypocrites.

Bruh there is 0 evidence against Sánchez as of right now, nor is there any charges against him. The most corrupt president in Spain's modern history? That'd be former president Mariano Rajoy who, unlike Sánchez is actually being charged as of right now. There is absolutely no case against Begoña, only judge Peinado doing LAWFARE, stretching the case and doing an ILLEGAL PROSPECTIVE INVESTIGATION to try and find shit on her. He doesn't care that there is zero evidence he just wants to give negative publicity to them since he is a corrupt judge favoring his political opponents.

Gómez is charged of misappropriation because she registered this state-funded software in her own name or that of her private company, Transforma TCS SL. When you say incompetent (I assume you mean corrupt)... Is that normal in Spain for a judge to charge someone? Also, did it come out of the blue or was there any noise about it before?
8
Anjoleon 5 days ago +13
I think there are two separated things here. One, the woman using her influence to have some advantages, something that in my opinion should not be allowed, and that is borderline corruption. And another one, a far right judge that is trying to interfere in politics, the same judge that has made big mistakes in the past and also timed all the big announcements about the process with other news going against right wing parties. The noise it all comes from the same place. Personally, I think this administration was way less corrupt than what we have been seeing in Spain in last decades but there is still a long way down, unfortunately. And I think none of that is going away anytime soon with PSOE or PP being in charge.

For those outside of Spain: Don't listen to those who defend the president or his wife in comments. These are accounts paid for by the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party) for propaganda purposes. Everyone in Spain knows how corrupt the president's and their family is.

This is just jarring. All his recent messaging about the high road Spain is taking feels like pure virtue signaling now that we know he's been nurturing a corrupt life partner. If he can't speak up about his wife's corruptions, then he should shut up about the rest.

I mean, for me him saying stop trading with Israel, but not offering to replace the arrow system was the biggest red flag. It screamed half baked plans.

Now do Trump and his kids! It seems like they are accusing her of using her position to get someone a job? Is that what we're complaining about? I know I'll be downvoted since the purpose of this article and thread is to fuel the propaganda machine but c'mon, at least try to be consistent... Looking at Spanish news media via a VPN, it appears it's a much larger story about the corrupt judge himself, rather than these charges. Truth is not a democracy.

Why would a Spanish judge do something about trump? Just cause someone is against Trump doesn't mean they're not shitty.

Yeah ,sure... and now say that the president's brother wasn't a corrupt either, that the fact he didn't even know where he worked in his public statements to the judge proves nothing to you, it's all the right wing's fault, right?

LOL and again LOL. From another article: “The charges come at an embarrassing time for the prime minister. A week ago, his former transport minister went on trial, also for corruption.” Oh aren’t they just so BASED ha ha ha.

I wonder what Sanchez will do against Israel for the distraction this time. He likes to use Jews as scapegoats to distract from his corruption scandals. It's the oldest trick in the book for leaders who are in trouble and need someone to blame or demonize.

Difference is, she's being held accountable. How many convicted fraudsters has Trump pardoned?
15
Theory_Eleven 5 days ago +3
Oh plenty. And I’m willing to bet Trump’s friends had something to do with her being caught. I have no doubt Sanchez is complicit in her corruption so he should not have tried claiming the moral high ground and making a public spectacle of standing against Trump. Did he just assume Trump would quietly let that slide?

This has been going on for years now. Trump has literally nothing to do with anything here…
