Yep, the cinematic experience would be ruined. It would likely be used as a technical demo though, because that does make sense for the particular movie.

Anyone with basic understanding of calibration will know you don't need to max out everything.
In a darkroom or a room where your control lighting, your eyes adjust and the TV doesn't need to be on full blast. The pop of HDR is still noticable at lower brightness levels.
But if you are referring to seizures due to flashing lights, I totally get it.
10
Nu11u5Mar 30, 2026
+17
It's more a joke about the color pallet of that movie having extremely high saturation.
HDR indexes brightness using an absolute scale, so increasing screen brightness should only affect the maximum brightness. SDR uses a normalized scale so increasing screen brightness affects everything and will wash out colors.
The most memorable use of HDR for me was watching 'Fury' when the German solders are shot with phosphorus incendiary rounds. Seeing the little pinpricks of searing hot bright white embers burning in the bullet wounds was impactful. It would have been completely lost in SDR.
17
that_70_show_fanMar 30, 2026

I totally agree with you. I have slightly soured on shitty HDR but there are still movies and shows that look so great. Denis Villenueve movies look great with HDR.

I saw this movie on the same IMAX in lincoln center nyc that I saw the dark Knight on earlier that summer and was convinced that speed racer was gonna be a big hit too, so I got to the theater super early like I had to for Batman, and ended up being one of maybe 15 people that were at speed racer lol

Same. And I remember seeing it with my friend, and in the opening scene where kid Speed is fantasizing about the race and the music and sound is blasting, I lean over to tell my buddy, “It looks like he just came”… except half way through my sentence, the sound drops out while I’m trying to speak over the loudness and everyone around me heard “HE JUST CAME”

It was so widely missed as the literal classic that it is.
People didn't understand this was a live action movie made to give the vibe and ambiance of an anime.
It came out around the time of The Dark Knight, and I think everyone was expecting some grungy edgy Speed Racer, but what we got was a classic homage to the original.

This movie also came out one week after Iron Man. Speed Racer being sandwiched between two grounded (relatively speaking) franchise superhero films really emphasized the stark contrast in tone and aesthetic permeating through Speed Racer.

I remember when this dropped and I wanted to watch it because of the Wachowski's alone but never did. Finally watched it about three years ago.
I almost never watched the original anime as a kid when it ran in syndication but knew the general plot. This is easily the best adaptation of anime to live action I've seen to this day, with some really amazingly directed scenes and smart use of compositing. I still think about scene where Speed turns down Royalton's offer and it seamlessly transitions into Speed in the Mach 5. Definitely for kids but a better movie than I expected given the source material.
6
MammothPosition660Mar 30, 2026
+6
Literally such a great movie. I completely agree with you. The fact that Speed chooses his own path, and doesn't even know about his brother being Racer X, that element was very well integrated into the movie, leading to probably one of the best cinematic climax scenes out there.
6
pasher5620Mar 31, 2026
+2
I agree with you that the timing of its release didn’t help it, but let’s be real. The CGI, despite being highly stylized, looks absolutely awful in certain sections and most of the bad cgi is front loaded in the beginning. All of the actual racing scenes (maybe excluding a small portion of the Fuji race) look visually stunning and it is clearly where most of the cgi budget went to, but a lot of people really struggle to get by the parts that look like they are from SpyKids 3D, which I think is fair.
2
sagevallantMar 31, 2026
It was a grim dark era and this film was just too happy and colorful for the moviegoers of the time. At a glance it looks like it's for little kids but it's for everyone. We all missed out on seeing it in theaters.

At downvoter, there's still not really any info on remastering techniques. This movie wasn't shot on film. 28 days later had a 4k announcement but it was delayed and i don't remember any updates on a release for that. But those movies were shot on digital cameras from that era so they can only work with the 1080p footage they captured. I don't even know if the wachowskis are supervising this.
It would be like if you found an SD card that had photos you took from a digital camera you had in 2004. You can't really make a genuine high def photo out of that file. Whatever the pixels are is what they sre.
Do I like speed racer and want to see that in higher def? Of course but i am aware of the challenges in doing so and have genuine concerns
1
IDidntKillMyWife1Mar 30, 2026
Man, I struggle with this one. Saw it when it came out and found it interesting but completely overwhelming and kind of let it go, but since then it’s had a long gestating cultural reappraisal and so I jumped at the chance to see it again on the big screen and found it similarly difficult to watch. I think the themes and story are pretty good but cliché and I genuinely found the parallels between the themes of the film and the filmmakers own careers to also be pretty interesting and personal, but it is so garish and overall a TON of style over some substance. I don’t know…. It’s not a bad experiment but seeing it again I really felt like the Wachowski’s should’ve just made an animated movie.
I’m all for movies that push what’s possible but I have yet to be convinced that making a live action cartoon to this degree can really work.
All that said, it’s singular in that there’s not really anything like it and that’s cool.

Such an ignorant statement. Physical media will always be better than streaming for many reasons. Picture quality, for one thing, is always much clearer and stable than streaming and you can watch it anytime you want. Also cheaper in the long run when you consider the price of streaming services are ever growing and nearly the cost of brand new BluRays in of themselves.
