>The combined company will maintain McCormick’s name and leadership. But upon closing, Unilever and its shareholders are expected to own 65% of the food company's outstanding equity, amounting $29.1 billion. Unilever would also get $15.7 billion in cash. Meanwhile, McCormick shareholders will own 35.0%.

Sysco buying Restaurant Depot is another one.
649
Certain_Luck_8266Mar 31, 2026

That one is HUGE. Jetro Restaurant Depot is a different model than sysco. It is essentially a 'costco' type scenario where restaurant owners can themselves fulfill the 'last mile' delivery themselves saving enormous costs and giving substantially greater flexibility.
Sysco is going to kill this model.
93
SEA_tideApr 1, 2026

It's not really going to change anything. US Foods bought the west coast chain Smart Foodservice, formerly Cash&Carry, from Smart & Final and renamed it US Foods Chef'Store in 2020. Costco is a major competitor through its Business Centers and business delivery as well.
The funny thing is that foodservice delivery can actually be a lot cheaper or at least save costs by having everything just show up at the desired location instead of having to have someone go and do all the shopping themselves. It also allows for much greater consistency, especially among locations in different parts of the US and Canada.

There are two. So it is hard to really gauge their intent....they are buying RD for 29B so maybe they are going to make a go at it, but it is just as likely they did some market research and saw a hundred little areas of the country with no competition other than RD and made the move.
Either way, all of our appetizers just got shittier.

theres no way buy n large made just ONE ship (the axiom being allegedly their premium offering) so all the peasant ships must be out there somewhere (or perhaps being not super lazy and entitled, they simply found a different planet to inhabit)
9

Also, the other dark reality of WALL-E is that the people on the *Axiom* were almost assuredly consuming not only their own feces and urine (obviously reconstituted), but also the remains of their dead. It's a really dark goddamned movie when you look behind the cuteness of it.
5
kayl_breinharMar 31, 2026

I think - at this point - pretty much every one of us would trade 10 years of misery ending in inevitable death if it meant we no longer had to hear about or from billionaires with entitlement/insecurity complexes.
And in the case of the ships being filled with billionaire descendants, at least they'd all be in blindingly unimaginable pain the moment they felt true 1g for the first time. I know PIXAR movies try to be optimistic, but knowing humanity well enough, my guess is that there'd be a minority of people willing to endure the pain to revitalize the Earth, and a majority who'd just go back into orbit and, well, then you've got *Elysium*.
It's why I can't enjoy WALL-E. I can't imagine a story where a concept of humanity that's been encouraged to be lazy for countless generations suddenly gives that up for unimaginable hardship.

Basically a type of fraud, it should be mandatory for all branding to be of the ultimate parent company for any product. I'm sick of companies pretending to actually be a bunch of small companies, giving an illusion of competition in the market. If Company A buys 50.1% of Company B I need Company A branding on the company formsely known as Company B's products within 6 months

No I'm saying they shouldn't be able to market *anything* under the McCormick brand because McCormick doesn't actually exist anymore in any real sense, Unilever just kills companies and elders their skin which is exactly what they're planning to do here. It's to fool people into thinking nothing has changed and that they're still buying the same product as they enshittify it, lowering their cost and the quality of the product while still trading under the name of a company that didn't do that.
8
SEA_tideApr 1, 2026

Besides being legally separate companies anyway, it's possible for companies to be run independently of their ownership or to retain the leadership of the acquired company. Companies can also change names to better reflect their new business.
Also, who is the ultimate parent company? Public companies are typically owned by many thousands of individuals.

Protean_ProteinMar 31, 2026
+25
This is already the case. The vast majority of food is distributed by a handful of companies to every other brand you know—Sysco is the biggest, but there’s also US Foods and PFG (the former is considering a takeover of the latter), Gordon Food Service… Amazon even has their own distributor now. But these foods all come from centralized warehouses before being labeled with whatever restaurant or grocery brand.
25
SilvervirageMar 31, 2026
+11
As someone that works in a restaraunt, no one that eats anywhere should want that. US Foods is basically the Dollar General brand of food, its cheapish sure but its quality is absolutely abysmal. Systolic is at least closer to... like Walmart Great Value brand which is still bad. PFG is.... fine, but their service f****** sucks (multiple people I know who work in restaurants said that their kitchen dropped them because they would lie about what they could send them and then end up being way overstocked, they couldnt reliably talk to a rep, and then we got rid of them because they would only send one of two drivers, one who has never showered once in his life and we could smell him throughout the whole f****** restaraunt all f****** day after a delivery, and another guy who literally stored some of our drop off in a trashcan and then knocked it over and broke half the things in it, and never got it all comped)
So best case scenario is every restaraunt you go to will have the same exact food supply and it will be poor quality.
11
Protean_ProteinMar 31, 2026
+9
I think what would surprise most people who haven’t worked in the industry is that a lot of food that looks like it was prepped and cooked in the restaurant, and that you’re charged a price for that should reflect that, is actually just pre-prepared frozen packaged shit of the same quality (or even literally the exact same product) you could buy at the grocery store and warm up in the oven yourself.
North American food supply is so corporatized and broken at this point that it’s frightening when you actually look into it and realize it’s almost impossible to escape. The same suppliers are sending the same fresh produce to every grocery store… so if a lot is contaminated or mishandled, then they’re all fucked.
Obviously we need some version of industrial food distribution so that Minneapolis and Quebec City can have fresh bananas. But the way things stand, it’s so far beyond that…

I hope they don’t close everything down in Hunt Valley.
Worked for McCormick as a temp awhile back had to sign an NDA that wouldn’t give up the recipe for KFC’s 11 herbs and spices.
They would also just give away industrial sized containers of spice and other stuff for free all the time. Had more hot sauce and spices than I knew what to do with.
They announced layoffs right as I left so I’m guessing financially they haven’t been doing great and it isn’t getting better.

Can we just skip to the part where 3 people on earth own everything and set all the rules? This long drawn out slog towards that inevitable dystopia is killing me.
Then we can start working on the next innovative way to screw the working man. /s

*”McCormick will buy Unilever’s food business for a combination of cash and equity, in a deal that values the Unilever unit at nearly $45 billion, the two food companies announced.”*
So McCormick is now an even bigger food (spice and condiment) company….

Get raw spices and make your own. Get back to making things from scratch. Taco seasoning is very easy to make. Hell with processed spices and food!

Glad I started growing my own herbs and spices. I've managed to grow all I need for the last 10 years and have enough to share with family. Fk helping these mega corpses anymore.

In a few years, just a few corporations will own every thing.

I remember when McCormick bought Canada's biggest spice company (Shwartz) in 1984, and then immediately shut everything down. Bastards...

NEW YORK -- Spice and flavorings company McCormick announced on Tuesday that it’s combining with Unilever’s foods division, which includes household names like Hellmann’s and Knorr.
Damn, now [this video](https://youtu.be/ewTMo3As4_w?si=4Ep9GFIgPSCqNwII) won't be as funny anymore

McCormick ruined Cholula hot sauce. I can only imagine their product lines getting even worse after this goes through.
