I have a very weird amount of faith in Cage here.

illinoishokie Apr 26, 2026 +238
Not every project Nic Cage does is good. But every project he does is made better by him being in it.

JDanzy Apr 26, 2026 +46
Even his ideas that suck are unique at least, you might not enjoy his stuff the way he meant but you'll enjoy it on some level probably even if it's a "let's never speak of this again" level.
46
Gh0stMan0nThird Apr 26, 2026 +42
He never winks at the camera. Every bad role he's given, he gives 100%
42
Indigocell Apr 26, 2026 +6
That's what I respect about him. You get the same Nic Cage energy whether or not it's some low budget, straight to DVD kind of movie or a high budget film with acclaimed writers and directors.
6
Phillip_Spidermen Apr 26, 2026 +3
Even in that unofficial Five Nights at Freddy-like movie where he had no lines https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0v27rfaoB2Y

ImGreat084 Apr 26, 2026 +1
That movie was so fun, he just beats the f*** out of animatronics
1
Gil_Demoono Apr 26, 2026 +22
If you're gonna suck, suck *weird.* Don't half-ass it and be embarrassed about sucking or reign it in so it isn't so obvious that you suck. I just watched the Wachowski Speed Racer movie today for the first time and boy does it suck. But it is so utterly honest about what it wants to be and just f****** goes for it. The result is a balls to the walls Mike Myers Cat in the Hat style fever dream that you just can't help but fall in love with. At one point John Goodman bodyslams a ninja and that's gonna stick with me a lot longer than the plots of other more competent movies. When Nick gets weird, he sucks, but in a very good way. I rarely know what he's going for, but I can always tell he's going for it.
22
Firm-Feature-5593 Apr 26, 2026 +13
I don't think he ever really sucks. If he's in a bad movie, he's the best thing in it. And if he's in a good movie, he always does a great job. He's not some kind of joke actor, he's legitimately one of the best actors of the modern era.
13
NarrativeNode Apr 26, 2026 +2
The man was the best damn Dracula I've ever seen in *Renfield*.
2
Firm-Feature-5593 Apr 26, 2026 +5
Definitely not a great movie, but god imagine it without him. It'd be nothing.
5
Ranwulf Apr 26, 2026 +1
Wachowski Speed Racer is EXACTLY what a Speed Racer movie has to be. Its cheesy, its colorful and fun.
1
Cognitive_Spoon Apr 26, 2026 +69
Nic Cage energy is crazy. Every bad movie ever made could become a good movie if he had been cast as a character and dialed it up to 11. I challenge anyone to disprove this deep truth of the universe. My wife and I call it "The Cage Law" and we sometimes talk about shitty old movies and imagine which character would have allowed it to be made into a classic if Nic had been cast.
69
TheLostSkellyton Apr 26, 2026 +11
He *thinks* about his roles with that same energy, and can articulate exactly why and how he makes all the decisions he does for any given character, and it shows. There was a very limited printing Criterion release of The Rock back in the day, and its directors commentary track with Cage, Ed Harris, Michael Bay, and Jerry Bruckheimer is genuinely the best talk I've heard on the art and craft of filmmaking and acting.
11
Cognitive_Spoon Apr 26, 2026 +2
Neuvo-Shamanic acting talent, lol
2
Hazel-Cakes Apr 26, 2026 +4
that assassin movie he was in was atrocious
4
Prime4Cast Apr 26, 2026 +1
Bangkok dangerous was cool af
1
kmacthefunky Apr 26, 2026 +3
I almost feel like it's entirely the director. If the director can focus him and use him correctly he's amazing .
3
rufio313 Apr 26, 2026 +5
He was brilliant in Pig.
5
Cognitive_Spoon Apr 26, 2026 +6
Sometimes he breaks through, also, though. Go watch National Treasure 2. It's not a National Treasure movie, it's a Nic Cage movie that has coopted the National Treasure brand. There's moments of pure Cage energy that all the other characters struggle to keep it together around, and it is virtuosic
6
Soft-Ad-8975 Apr 26, 2026 +9
What about all the shitty movies he’s done purely for the $?
9
Cognitive_Spoon Apr 26, 2026 +47
They wouldn't exist at all without him, rule stands, lol
47
Soft-Ad-8975 Apr 26, 2026 -6
Really, all the straight to dvd/vod forgettable trash he did for years? You don’t think they would have just used one of the dozens of other actors making the same slop for a nickel?
-6
theprotectedneck Apr 26, 2026 +12
Those movies got the funding to be made because Cage was in them.
12
No-stradumbass Apr 26, 2026 +11
Like Willy's Wonderland? Where he didn't say a single thing the whole movie and still was able to go full Cage while playing pinball.
11
ralph442000 Apr 26, 2026 +3
I love this movie, so ridiculous, so weird, but so f’ing entertaining!
3
HateKilledTheDinos Apr 26, 2026 +1
Truly a master class in how you can't cage the Cage! I've watched that movie a fair amount and for whatever reason love it.
1
peppermint_nightmare Apr 26, 2026 +1
They would be worse if the character he played was acted by someone else.
1
ZennTheFur Apr 26, 2026 -5
They're no longer shitty because of Cage. Pretty sure that's what they're saying. He's capable of singlehandedly carrying a shitty movie into at the very least cult classic status. Bruce Willis was very similar. The fifth element was mediocre at best, but he carried that shit so hard.
-5
Fabray13 Apr 26, 2026 +16
> The fifth element was mediocre at best, but he carried that shit so hard. Not every day you see a take this bad.
16
ZennTheFur Apr 26, 2026 -2
It's a cult classic for a reason. I really love the movie, but believe there are very few actors who could have pulled off what he did.
-2
Fabray13 Apr 26, 2026 +3
Idk if it’s really a cult classic though, it’s nearly universally liked at this point. The *cult* part would be the people that think it’s one of the best movies ever made.
3
ZennTheFur Apr 26, 2026 +1
It's very widely considered a cult classic. I can't speak exactly to the reasoning, but critic reviews of it are pretty divided, while, like you said, audience reviews are generally very positive. That's at least one of the hallmarks of a cult classic.
1
Fabray13 Apr 26, 2026 +1
Cult classics kind of have to bomb at the box office though, they have to be un(der)appreciated in their time. The Fifth Element did really well in theaters, and critics were mixed *at worst*, it was reviewed well too. I don’t think the conventional opinion has ever really changed on this one; it was well liked at the time, and is still considered one of the best sci fi movies of the decade.
1
ZennTheFur Apr 26, 2026
Like I said, I can't speak to the reasoning. But if you look it up, you'll see that it is considered by most people to be a cult classic. It doesn't at all have to bomb at the box office to be a cult classic. It just has to be an old movie with an enduring and enthusiastic fan base that for one reason or another doesn't have widespread appeal. The fifth element is a strange movie and nothing about it in particular stands out as *good*, and especially these days most people haven't seen it, if they've even heard of it at all.
0
PerforatedPie Apr 26, 2026 +1
You are grossly underselling Gary Oldman's performance. And Chris Tucker. And any number of other actors who shined. Meanwhile you're gushing over "Do you really think they'd give the leading role to Walter" Willis.
1
thejawa Apr 26, 2026 +5
> The fifth element was mediocre at best I will throw hands, where you at?
5
ZennTheFur Apr 26, 2026
I think my point is being missed lol. The mediocrity was part of the point. The director basically took a ton of super overplayed cliches and made an entire film around them intentionally. Korben Dallas's cliche, for example, is a shallow protagonist whose entire role is to be badass and shoot bad guys. That just happens to be like... the culmination of Bruce Willis's repertoire. Nobody could deliver a silly cliche action hero one-liner like he could, and part of the movie's charm is that it leans into that.
0
irontuskk Apr 26, 2026 +1
Simply because a movie was built on cliches doesn't mean it is mediocre on purpose. I've talked to a significant amount of film folks over the years and this is the wildest take. The music, choreography, cinematography, set design, costume design, makeup, pacing, and dialogue are all stellar. Literally nothing about this movie is mediocre lmao. Leaning in to a cliche, perhaps. You're going to have to walk this one back my guy, you are just so off base. If you think Bruce Willis carried this movie you've kind of lost the plot. Milla was killer. Chris Tucker's character could be played by literally nobody else. Gary Oldman absolutely bonkers in this role. Even smaller roles like Ian Holm and Lee Evans were iconic. Tommy Lister Jr. as the president bantering with Korben's mom was a small moment but also so memorable. I am just ranting at this point but I've never been so flabbergasted at a comment on listnook as I am by yours. To jail with you.

HateKilledTheDinos Apr 26, 2026 +1
You and your wife sound amazing.
1
Storvox Apr 26, 2026 +5
He's been pretty fantastic in everything he's been involved in recently, even if the project itself sucks. He's definitely done a lot to restore his image in the eyes of the general public.
5
killbill-duck Apr 26, 2026 +2
Yeah because it's cage
2
Efficient_Fish2436 Apr 26, 2026 +1
This is either gonna be another Ghost rider 2.... or something amazing.
1
bluehawk232 Apr 26, 2026 +1
I liked him as the voice for it in SV and if they did animated series for this fine. But live action? Not a good choice. He's in his 60s and the character should be half his age. And if the character is supposed to be in his 30s I ain't buying Cage at that
1
corgi-king Apr 26, 2026 +1
Come on, he has The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. But like what the f***, some of his recent movies got 3.6, 4.5 on IMDB.

I love the Across the Spiderverse audio references that pop in about halfway through So cool
4
BrichardRurphy Apr 26, 2026 +64
Of course I'm watching the B&W version but damn the colors on the other version are so rich. Especially since so many shows look so dull nowadays...
64
CubitsTNE Apr 26, 2026 +10
Reminds me of the d*** tracy movie. Which totally still holds up, holy shit what a wild visual production!
10
zurdopilot Apr 26, 2026 +18
First B&W then color no other way around it, i only hope for theatrical release
18
dean15892 Apr 26, 2026 +8
B&W upon weekly releases, and then binge the color version the week of the season finale. This is the Way.
8
zurdopilot Apr 26, 2026 +4
Wait what? This is a series? I was so exited didnt even notice this is even better!!! AWESOME!
4
Torrrs Apr 26, 2026 +3
They're not doing weekly releases
3
Puzzled-Instance3211 Apr 26, 2026 +83
This looks fantastic! And it looks gorgeous in black and white.
83
goddamnitwhalen Apr 26, 2026 +14
Same DP who shot *Twin Peaks: The Return*!
14
Development-Feisty Apr 26, 2026 +40
Surprisingly the color is also gorgeous because it’s really bright and colorful like old technicolor
40
TheJoshider10 Apr 26, 2026 +10
Yeah I'm so glad they went all in with the old school colours rather than making it generically muted like so many shows today. Black and white will be my first watch but I'll definitely check out the colour version at some point.
10
polopolo05 Apr 26, 2026 +2
its not sepia. shades of brown veres what we have here shades of black and blue.
2
sourcefourmini Apr 26, 2026 +72
Wild that the full-color "it sounds crazy I know" shot at the end is from the same show. Something about the scene+color literally makes it look like it's from a sitcom where Nic Cage's character is talking about a ridiculous spider dream he had.
72
rhythmrice Apr 26, 2026 +25
They also released the trailer in color and in this version it shows that last scene in black and white, so the whole trailer is swapped https://youtu.be/LpN2RavI5C8
25
Shawnj2 Apr 26, 2026 +8
Honestly I think black and white will be a better experience, watching the color version of the trailer it feels like the color version is an afterthought and the black and white version is the "intended" release Also like classic who black and white hides some of the lower quality CGI and effects
8
Dr_J_Hyde Apr 26, 2026 +1
I think that was intentional. They wanted this series to feel like it's not from our era. More like an old classic that just got the "now in color" treatment.
1
polopolo05 Apr 26, 2026 +1
I am watching black and white frist...seems wrong to watch it in color
1
Minimum-Web-6902 Apr 26, 2026 +3
Uhhh lol you might be on to something….
3
devenrc Apr 26, 2026 +39
Nicolas Cage literally IS this version of the character. Like it’s not even funny. Just complete unironic committment to it.
39
AndNowAStoryAboutMe Apr 26, 2026 +16
If this is weekly, I'd do release day in B&W and then a True Hue ™️ re-watch mid-week before every new episode. I actually love that it's coming out in both. Hoping for a 4K UHD Blu-Ray with both versions seconds after a trailer premiere is not something I expected of myself this year.
16
Outrageous_Issue724 Apr 26, 2026 +7
I wish they'd post the trailer in 4K
7
qartas Apr 26, 2026 +6

He's a spider.  He's a s*** spider.
6
MrGabrahamLincoln Apr 26, 2026 +3
This has a higher ceiling than Brand New Day for me. Also has a lower floor since it’s such an unknown, but it’s exciting to have a live action Spider-Man that isn’t standard modern day Spidey. Really hope they don’t fumble this.
3
mangosawce9k Apr 26, 2026 +8
This fits and slaps, why is Nic Cage so cool!
8
AndNowAStoryAboutMe Apr 26, 2026 +9

I think this is awesome but at the same time having a 65 year old spiderman is kinda wild
8
UnbuiltIkeaBookcase Apr 26, 2026 +7
Damn I didn’t realize Cage was THAT old
7
MrGabrahamLincoln Apr 26, 2026 +10
It wouldn’t work if he was Peter Parker-Spider-Man but for whatever reason it doesn’t bother me since he’s grizzled-1930s-detective-Ben Reilly-Spider-Man
10
greenufo333 Apr 26, 2026 +2
Yeah true
2
OriginalMisphit Apr 26, 2026 +1
Yeah, was just wishing this could be a younger Nic Cage. He is such a physical actor that I worry that age could result in noticeable limitations. And as an almost 50 y.o. woman, his age makes me wish for an older lead actress if her character is any kind of love interest for him. But I’m being hyper critical of something in the middle of the night.
1
Disastrous-House591 Apr 26, 2026 +3
heck yes
3
HauntingStar08 Apr 26, 2026 +3
I feel like seeing this in color is just cheating, black and white is the way to go
3
GiannisGOAT6753 Apr 26, 2026 +3
The hardest decision for this is to watch in black and white or color. Hell why not both? I fuckin love Spider-Man.
3
MrGabrahamLincoln Apr 26, 2026 +2
Yeah I’m also torn, both appeal to me. I’ll probably do color first & then b&w if it’s good enough for an immediate rewatch.
2
stonhinge Apr 26, 2026 +2
I know I enjoyed the Werewolf By Night in b/w so I may actually give the b/w Spider-Noir a shot.
2
CrazyDoode Apr 26, 2026 +3
I watched the first 19 seconds of this trailer and I yelled NOOOO - I just had to turn it off. No spoilers please I am going to watch this as soon as it's released, and again prolly too. This looks stellar and probably the best thing since FOtv.
3
Pretty_Frosting_2588 Apr 26, 2026 +3
I hope the black and white version has a post credits scene with a colorful Rubik's cube in the background.
3
insaniTY151 Apr 26, 2026 +3
I don't know him personally, but I am so happy for Nic Cage that he gets to cook in live action with this character. What a f****** career.
3
CBenson1273 Apr 26, 2026 +12
Watched both versions. I think I’m more excited about the black and white version - something about it looks more noir-ish that isn’t the same in bright color.
12
Diogenese5000 Apr 26, 2026 +6
If this looks good to you, check out Sin City if you haven’t seen it.
6

Love Island
10
Diogenese5000 Apr 26, 2026 +1
Homie these guys are hating, but I’m with you. I like the concept and fun tone, dig Nic Cage, but wasn’t really moved by the trailer. I just kept thinking, Sin City is 20 years old and still looks way better than this.

4
Klutzy_Anybody_1487 Apr 26, 2026 +1
who would animate that? sony animation who couldn't get 4 hours of spiderman out in nearly a decade?
1

Same. Personally, the fact that it's live action halves my interest it.
-3
Firesky54 Apr 26, 2026 +2
Gonna say I like the old style of  the trailer.
2
Fredasa Apr 26, 2026 +2
I really wish Netflix's trailer editor had put his foot down and _refused_ to immediately cut in with that infomercial-esque outro with that damn upbeat jingle.
2

1

He isn't Peter Parker.

-2

Why wasn’t this animated lol
-1
Saltimbanco_volta Apr 26, 2026 -13
Looks like flat TV lighting and effects that they applied a c**** black and white filter on top That's what you get when they're forced to make it both in black and white and in color at the same time.
-13
jjflash78 Apr 26, 2026 -2
Why is Ghost Rider in it?

I think the whole point of the color version is it’s not normal color it’s very much like technical color the color you would see at the time at that time movies were still coming out in black-and-white or color depending on budget so it’s very true to what they’re trying to represent In fact the beautiful look of noir is specifically because of the low budgets creating constraints No time to have a c*** ton of lights set up with diffusers, straight on studio lights quick set up quick teardown enjoy your shadows

The whole trailer looks like AI. Every cliche shot ever. But this might be so damn good. Def gonna check it out.
