Forgive me if this has been addressed before or I missed it, but is there anything planned for spoilers that are actually included in the title of the post? I know it may be kind of silly, but there have been times where a title itself was a spoiler and I read it without knowing. I use a Chrome extension called Unspoiler that blocks out certain keywords and allows me to unhide them. Something similar to that might be cool. Thanks for the work you've already done, I am definitely a fan! (Edit: [Here's](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/unspoiler/oookgbbhgojdebhnmkmhgfagoiknifgi?hl=en-US) a link to Unspoiler in the Chrome Web Store if anyone is interested in seeing how it works). Edit2: As I said to /u/Zagorath below, I also think it would be great if the spoiler tag placed on the title blocked out the spoiler and users could modify what the tag itself would say. It would be helpful if it said something like, "S03E09 Spoiler" and users would know to avoid it. /u/GraklingHunter brought the top all time post in /r/Warframe to my attention and it implements spoiler tagging titles tastefully. It would just be made better with the ability of descriptions.

Most sublistnooks seem to operate with a 'no spoilers in the title' rule, which seems to work okay for now. In future, we may look at adding this. However, there are two issues we'll need to resolve before then: * Right now titles don't support markdown. We'll add markdown support for spoiler comments before we get around to adding it for titles. * If the title of a post is obscured along with the preview, how do you know if you want to view it or not? Right now the title gives you a hint as to the contents of the post. We'll tackle spoiler comments with native markdown support first. And then look at if title support is something we want to consider.

I appreciate the reply! I'm happy as long as long as you guys know there is some demand for it and are open to looking at it in the future. I understand that first and foremost Listnook is a website for entertainment and post titles are important to how a lot of people browse. There is definitely a lot to consider, but if I understand your second issue correctly, that could be fixed if the spoiler could be labeled with a description of its contents. I get that such a feature may be a long way off though. A way to filter out spoiler posts from the frontpage could be complicated, but also pretty useful in some cases. Anyway, thanks for the work that has been put in so far regarding spoilers!

Yes it would be awesome to be able to hide the title from posts marked as spoilers or even completely remove spoiler tagged posts from your frontpage if you choose so, then I could finally use listnook after a PPV or a TV show finale without risking a spoiler

Yeah, that's exactly what I had in mind. I have had to unsubscribe from a few sublistnooks in the past because I don't watch premiere episodes the day of. Having an option to hide spoiler posts as a whole from the frontpage is a great idea!

I'm inclined to agree with you, but it rarely happens. I actually ran into the problem with spoilers in /r/reactiongifs, but they unfortunately don't always tag the gif content as spoilers. I haven't been there in a while though so I'm not sure if they're better than other sublistnooks or not.

I understand why you would want that, but to be honest I don't think it would be enormously helpful. It's far better to simply have sublistnook rules in spoiler-sensitive subs to disallow titles that contain spoilers. The reason is that without reading the title, *you don't know* what the spoiler is. It could be about the latest episode of the show, which you might think is fine if you're up to date, but it could also be speculation or known facts about the *future* of whatever franchise, based on behind the scenes sneak peaks, trailers, etc. If spoilers are allowed in the title itself, because they can be hidden from people who don't want to see them, you might read the title thinking you're fine, since you're up to date, and end up being spoiled anyway.

I can see why labeling them would be helpful, so you at least know what you're getting into, like "trailer discussion" or "leaked scripts", but sometimes I'd rather not even know that a spoiler exists. I occasionally see posts tagged with things like "new character" or "character death". I'd rather just hide these posts entirely. (For examples, just see some recent posts on /r/thewalkingdead/: [1](https://www.listnook.com/r/thewalkingdead/comments/5olf14/s7e1_deaths_uk_censored_versions/), [2](https://www.listnook.com/r/thewalkingdead/comments/5oloko/tv_and_comic_spoilers_if_this_character_hadnt/), [3](https://www.listnook.com/r/thewalkingdead/comments/5o6xwu/spoilers_a_short_visual_representation_of_if/)) Also, as a matter of principle, I think the title should not be vague, even in the case of spoilers. Otherwise this makes searching and cataloguing even more difficult than it already is, because you'll just have a bunch of posts titled "S02E05 spoilers" or "what do you think about [spoiler]" and you won't know which post is what without opening all of them. Instead the tag itself could indicate the type of spoiler (e.g. trailer, S02E05). A spoiler tag should not be a part of the post (i.e. in the title or in the comment), but a separate mechanism to label unwanted content, similar to nsfw.

That's a fair point, but in some cases, I'd rather take the risk of missing out on something funny or interesting than viewing a spoiler for something that I haven't watched yet. To make spoiler tags for post titles more useful, I think that adding the ability to edit the tag might be perfect. That way, if you were posting a spoiler in your title and acknowledged that fact, you could title it, "S03E12 Spoiler." The same could be done if a Mod felt that the title was a spoiler. Then, if the user chooses to view the title, they can either hover over it or select a "View" option.

Some sublistnooks already use this as part of their CSS, so it's definitely possible. Take a look at /r/Warframe and sort by top -> all time. The top post is a spoiler, and the CSS masks the title.

Eh, that's usually just classic trolling; pretty much par for the course when it comes to /r/4chan. I mean, it's basically a mini- /b/ with slightly less racism, a tad more generalized autism (but more reigned in, it's just the sublistnook meta that evolved that way because few people there are actually creative or able to think for themselves), name IDs for everyone, and less h*****/animal p*** and shock content. The two **big** times that the mods *did* put spoilers in the OP title's flair (the goal being that it hits the front page of r/all and all of Listnook sees it), the spoilers were believable but were false - so not even a spoiler, just a believable troll (in the actual, pre-2010, Ken M era's meaning of troll).

During episode 7 their top banner was the scene with Han solo. Also they changed the sub description to a spoiler. On the actual 4chan /b/ the admins added the Ep 7 spoiler as a line at the end of every comment.

This method of rating comments as NSFW, by users is ripe for abuse if not handeled with care. Guess you could flag a comment as NSFW and if a comment gets flagged enough, it would be left to mod or admin to implement the NSFW tag if needed.

Yea I don't think thats a good idea. Mods should have the final say similar to how they decided whether reported comments are worth removing or not. >But that'll put more burden on mods! Which is why I think the admins should give sublistnooks the ability to implement a "trusted user" role. What is a trusted user? It would be a member of the sublistnook, appointed by the moderators, to add flairs, write official sublistnook posts, edit theme, and perform tasks unrelated to enforcing rules. Since they're not actual moderators they wouldn't be able to ban users and remove or edit posts. I can imagine this feature being very handy for large, default sublistnooks. Moderators would be able to dedicate entirely to enforcing the rules while trusted users deal with improperly tagged posts and other stuff that doesn't require the use of a banhammer.

Sublistnooks already do a good job of hiding spoiler comments with CSS. E.g. [r/asoiaf](https://www.listnook.com/r/asoiaf/comments/i2mg6/attention_we_now_have_a_new_spoilertagging_system/). We just need to implement a native version so everyone can use the same system, rather than the method of applying the spoiler via markdown varying from sublistnook to sublistnook.

If you do this, I'd personally recommend going for the 'tagged spoiler' style (where you can specify what the spoiler is about), such as that used on /r/anime. It just looks a bit neater than the generic spoilers that many other subs use ie. [Star Wars](/s "Luke is Darth's father") vs Breaking Bad spoilers: [Walt kills pizza](/spoiler)

Doesn't work or barely works on mobile, though. There's no such thing as a mouseover with a touchscreen, and if you click it acts as a link. Enough fiddling gets it to work, but shouldn't need to fiddle. A proper, universal solution would be much appreciated.

I've actually found a solution for it: I press the text, then (still pressing) move my thumb as if I was trying to sidescroll (and in reality just moving it out of the way of the text), then let go. The text stays readable until I tap the screen again. I'm using Chrome on Android, so it should be similar to what you have. **Edit:** Clarified instructions.

What about a wider variety of NSFW tags? Yeah, i know /r/comicbooks uses NSFW tags for spoilers... So I got in the habit of just clicking nsfw posts because I'm often in that sub, and don't mind comic spoilers. Then I was in /r/all and made that mistake, at work... freaked me out. SO an actual "spoiler" tag for posts is great, but there definitely needs to be a universal one for comments. also one that works on tablets and phones and on alienblue etc.

For me, I really really hate that TV/movie spoilers have been marked with NSFW. That has made me miss live discussions and threads - there is NO reason tonight's episode of The Flash is marked as only safe for over 18 content. Try Sync for listnook, if you haven't already. It takes a tiny bit to get used to when switching from baconreader (like I did too), but ultimately I find it to be a cleaner, sleeker and easier way of browsing.

The official app has gotten usable in the past 6 months or so that I finally caved and got off Alien Blue. Might be worth giving it a shot again. The only annoying feature is it asking me to turn on notifications every now and then (the answer is always no). If not, I would say Narwhal is my favorite 3rd party at the moment.

My problem with that is that comment spoilers are semantically not the same as links. They're hidden content, not potholes to another page. IMO they should be on the same formatting spectrum as bold or italic text.

How about adopting the markdown-it custom container format? For instance ::: spoiler (text shown) (expanded text) ::: And the inline version can be... excessively annoying: ({[#spoiler text to show by default | text to show after hovering reliops#]}) The latter can be captured by /({[#spoiler\s*(.+)\s*\|\s*(.+)\s*reliops#]})/ig Where $1 holds some text to show and $2 holds the spoiler text. It could also be used like /[({\[]{3} … [)}\]]{3}/ig to make it work. --- This comment disregards i18n and l10n if you couldn't tell.

Could it be possible to customize the "SPOILER" tag to write information about the spoiler? Example: If someone posts a spoiler about the 4 season of GOT, the spoiler tag should say "SPOILER: S04" so that people who are currently watching season 5 can view the spoiler. Otherwise they could think that it is a spoiler for season 5-6

I think the current system used by many sublistnooks, tagging details about the spoilers in the post titles, works fine. See, for example, [/r/asoiaf's spoiler tag system](https://www.listnook.com/r/asoiaf/wiki/spoilertagsystem2016) or [/r/gameofthrone's system](https://www.listnook.com/r/gameofthrones/wiki/spoiler_guide). Of course, these tags get rarely used, because most people discussing the show/book/game/etc. are already caught up and want to discuss the whole thing, but because these tags have their own flairs, people can also search by spoiler type.

That's great but I think spoiler tags for comments are needed much more. There are already several ways to mark a post as a spoiler, including the word SPOILER, but there's no reliable way to do that for comments.

r/anime has had this [Anime Show/Other Title] (/s "Spoiler goes here") It's a method that works pretty well and also doesn't spoiler the entire comment just in case only a sentence or so is a spoiler.

I really admire listnook's commitment to making the website completely unreadable for as many people as humanly possible. Seven years ago, coming to Listnook was this: Go to the sublistnook you want. Is it p***? Click "Yes, I'm 18+." Is it not p***? Then you don't have to do anything. Then, click and view the posts you want to view. Now, if I want to view a post on even a video game sublistnook: Go to the sublistnook. Click "Yes, I am 18+," because every sublistnook except for /r/awwducational has now been deemed triggering for somebody. Scroll past the first two posts, which are likely sticky posts from the mods lecturing the community on standards and telling them they're losing some sort of privileges. Individually highlight every post to get past the "Spoiler" tag, maybe eventually find the content you're looking for. Click on the post, scroll past the first page of comments, which will just be a long screed from the moderators insulting the community and telling them that they don't deserve to be on Listnook, and this is why they're locking the post. Then, scroll past pages two and three of the comments, which is just automoderator sticky posts amended to every single post and discussion now. Scroll past pages four and five of the comments, which are just **REMOVED**, and get to the first content-related comment, which is of course also hidden behind its own spoiler tag you have to click on.

Well kinda depends, half of the defaults seem to have no spoiler policy at all. Right now /r/gaming has a fairly major Rick & Morty spoiler on the front page. In more specific moderated sublistnooks like /r/gameofthrones you usually can avoid it by just not browsing new posts, but in more general stuff like /r/anime I see spoilers for random shows in unrelated threads. The only real way it would work is if all users tagged their own posts. Which is obviously never going to happen, but I'm still salty about it anyways.

We have a really strict spoiler policy at /r/anime, if you ever see posts/comments with untagged spoilers, please report them, they will be dealt with.

All users will never do it, but I remember when AskListnook didn't have the serious tag, and how once it got popular people started using it in sublistnooks that don't enforce it and oddly enough the users (for the most part) treated it like a serious thread.

Just checked out the examples and the SPOILER tag is barely visible on desktop using RES night mode. This isn't a big deal for text posts since there is an additional click through, but for images it is extremely easy to miss. Thanks for the new feature.

I'm glad this is becoming an official thing now. I know of a few sublistnooks that rejiggered the NSFW tag to stand in place of an actual spoiler tag, so it's good to know that we can actually mark spoilers now while still having use of the NSFW tag.

Super random and maybe nitpicky, but would you guys consider adding a "minimize" feature to the list of filtered sublistnooks from r/all? Every time I go to r/all on desktop now, I'm immediately reminded of all a bunch of hate subs/etc that I want to hide from view because they're all listed in the sidebar. I find that I only really browse all on mobile now because of this!

I really want to like the iOS official listnook app, but having NSFW content thumbnails randomly pop up while browsing /r/all is a dealbreaker for me especially if I'm trying to be discreet showing someone something on /r/all. There needs to be a thumbnail option in addition to Always Show, Never Show, and Community Default, to have NSFW thumbnails interactively displayed, spoiler-ed or only displayed when it's opened. Hint: how WP Readit does it. Also comments not loading is a bummer, otherwise the app would be good.

I myself have worked out a perfect solution to avoid spoilers on a race weekend. I don't come here! Seriously, I always d/l the race so I can get the Sky feed. Also, because I am married, and have children and responsibilities I usually am a day behind, and am unable to watch until late at night. *Sometimes* I can watch The F1 Show and Qualy by Saturday bedtime, otherwise I watch as much of the rest I can on Sunday night. Sometimes I don't complete watching the race until Monday night. But usually from the beginning of P1 on Friday until I have finished watching the race I am never here. After I am done of course I am here for days LOL. Steven

good idea in theory, but it requires that everyone viewing a particular sublistnook wont spoil stuff and will use the spoiler tags and there will always be that one guy that goes "omg did you see when (blah blah blah)?" without the tags, ruining things for anyone reading regardless. imo the best way to avoid spoilers is to...avoid sublistnooks discussing the content. it's a good idea in theory but everyone has to avoid posting spoilers. and people enjoy trolling fanbases... ie: the guy yelling snape kills dumbledore at a harry potter line
