A midweek day off actually sounds kind of amazing, not gonna lie.

When I worked at an Amazon warehouse, they had something called the "donut schedule". Two days on, one day off, two days on, and then the normal two days off. It was amazing and one of the best schedules I've ever worked. It made working at Amazon slightly more bearable.

I worked at a warehouse Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for 11hrs each day and was considered full time and got full time benefits. There was always optional OT for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday if you wanted more hours. Some people were absolute animals and would work 6 days, 11hr days but their paychecks were huge. The one guy was trying to pay down his house super quick. Anyway, that schedule was so awesome because 3 days a week is all you have to work and if you want to work more you can. Plus the fact you get benefits only working 3 days a week. For me who doesn’t go out or anything on the weekends, it was perfect. Had the whole week to do stuff, felt like skipping school lol. I remember being so happy come Sunday and everyone else in the world was moaning that it’s Sunday and they have to work the next day. Not me!

I used to bartend with a Friday Saturday Sunday schedule and I can concur, it’s a great way to go through the week. Having a four day weekend every week is quite the luxury.

Lots of nurses work 3 12s

CondescendingShitbag Mar 17, 2026 +3
Used to do something similar when I worked in a microchip fabrication facility. Schedule was Sun-Tues + every other Wed. They were 12-hour shifts, but it was great always having 3-4 days off each week with the option to pickup extra shifts on the other days if desired. Pay was pretty solid for someone fresh out of high-school, too. Kinda miss that schedule...not the job, just the schedule.

My shift are long 12 hour days but luckily working from home. One week I work. Wednesday and Thursday. The other Monday,Tuesday and then the weekend Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Makes the job worthwhile.

I hope this isn't too invasive of a question but wtf kind of job is that schedule and wfh? Some kind of emergency dispatch? Telehealth?

FartsGracefully Mar 17, 2026 +64
I recently started a job at a plant milk manufacturer. They do 12 hr shifts on a 2-2-3 schedule. To my knowledge its to lessen any errors with excessive handoffs between multiple shifts. So work 2 days, off 2 days, work 3 days, off 2 days, work 2 days, then off 3 days. It gives a 3 day weekend every other week. Its been interesting.

Ah, the panama schedule.
21
Kirby_Gay Mar 17, 2026 +3
Wait how does this relate to panama
3
MaintenanceFickle945 Mar 17, 2026 +3
It was allegedly first used in Panama by soldiers working the canal.
3
dontthink19 Mar 17, 2026 +9
I thought about 2-2-3. I know two people who have that kind of schedule and they call us normie 8 hrs shifters dumb because they get more days off per month despite having to come home, eat, sleep, then pretty much go back to work on days you work. I liked 4 10 hour shifts myself. If I do 8s then I really like doing 6am to 2pm shifts. I just HATE getting up super early. But I'm locked into 8s now. 8am to 5pm with an hour "unpaid" lunch. Which doesn't matter cuz I'm flat rate
9
D20RockMan Mar 17, 2026 +5
Work in an egg plant manufacturer, we do the same 2-2-3. The long weekends are amazing.
5
Buxbaum09 Mar 17, 2026 +13
Sadly nothing that fancy. We do 24 hours tech support for different companies across the globe. You get some very interesting questions.
13
MrSpindles Mar 17, 2026 +8
I work the same schedule, best shift pattern I've ever had. It means that if I book 2 days holiday I get a week off.
8
french_snail Mar 17, 2026 +31
I worked something a called a Panama schedule, same concept but 3 on 3 off 2 on 2 off Man I loved that schedule
31
asianwaste Mar 17, 2026 +9
When I worked military police we had that schedule. It sounds rough but we had a 2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off fortnight schedule block. Those short weeks were AWESOME. Especially if you were good with using your leave. You obviously put them on your 2 day weeks so you get a whole 10 days for yourself. I did so many MWR tours. Honestly, if your org has 24 hour manning with rotating teams (need 4), I highly recommend this. Since it was military, we worked long hours a day (roughly 12-14) but none of that seemed to matter because significant breaks were only a few days away.

MainPFT Mar 17, 2026 +6
One intriguing schedule I ran into at one employer while interviewing about 12 years ago was M-Thur 9hrs (6am-330pm) and then half day Fri (6am-10am). I ultimately went with another employer (current) due to the pay being significantly better but that schedule has been stuck in my head ever since.
6
originalcrisp Mar 17, 2026 +2
There's a local company that has a schedule they call 9/80 that consists of 5 8 hour days with 2 days off, then 4 10 hour days with 3 days off. That one always interested me too
2
Mego1989 Mar 17, 2026 +2
I do a 4 day work week with Fri-Sun off and it's pretty amazing. For awhile it was a donut schedule and I didn't like that as much.
2
Sage2050 Mar 17, 2026 +3
Four tens isn't healthy though, unless you were lucky enough to have a 32 hr week
3
khinzaw Mar 17, 2026 +114
Idk, I much prefer consecutive days off. You can have more elaborate plans and on a single day off you still have to worry about work the next day.
114
large_snowbear Mar 17, 2026 +148
SL is doing this because they dont want people to plan long weekends and take long trips for fun or visit family. They want to converse fuel usage.
148
Mego1989 Mar 17, 2026 +24
That's not what the article said. They don't want government services to be shut unavailable for 3 days in a row.
24
Winjin Mar 17, 2026 +18
Island of Sri-Lanka is like 436 kms across by 200km, the situation with fuel has to be BAD bad if they have to conserve fuel on that scale, considering that a lot of people drive 2-cylinder ICEs there, that are like 2-4 liters per 100 kms
18
PositionPractical584 Mar 17, 2026 +9
It’s not that, we have a pretty big problem with hoarding and black market selling. We have tuks here (rickshaw) they spend all day going to different sheds, filling up and siphoning off the fuel. Then they don’t go on hires and sell the fuel for 4-5x the price because fuel is currently rationed. This leads to artificial demand and scarcity. Just a few days ago someone was busted with 19000 liters of diesel which was hoarded. Obviously no one’s stockpiling 19000 liters of diesel for personal use.
9
Winjin Mar 17, 2026 +3
JFC 19 tons?? On top of being a huge a****** move, it's also extremely dangerous. That could level a whole neighbourhood if only one container collapses and a fire starts. Especially if neighbors are also storing gas.
3
orokami11 Mar 17, 2026 +4
Currently I have 1 day off, 2 days on, 2 days off, 2 days on for the week starting on Sun. Honestly I love the 1 off day inbetween 4 days of work, but I'd also prefer 3 days off in a row. Because just 1 day off doesn't REALLY feel like a day off. I sleep in bc I'm so tired, and half the day is basically gone, then I gotta work the next day! I've been trying to get my manager to give me at least 3 days off in a row. He kept saying he'll try to in March, but then says there's no one to cover bc people have changed school schedules. I even said I'd be content with 1 morning shift before my 2 days off, because at least I can kinda go home early and still do some stuff and feel rested lol. Essentially having 3.5 days of work for an exact 50/50 work life balance. Idk if there's really no one that can work on those days, or he just cbf 😭 The thing that annoys me is that Sun, Mon, Tue, maybe Wed, are like the least busy days of the week, so I'm kind of shooting myself in the foot haha, BUT there's definitely no way he will let me have Fri and Sat off lmao

I work at one of relatively few companies in the US that has a four day work week without loss of pay, and having a day off in the middle of the week is the best thing to ever happen to me. There are jobs out there where I would get paid more, but my quality of life has drastically improved with this one trick and I can't see myself ever giving it up.
9
Dymodeus Mar 17, 2026 +7
I work 4 days, Wednesday is my day off and it's great. I got time to recharge and do some small chores so I dont have to do everything in the weekend
7
broadsword_1 Mar 17, 2026 +4
It probably is, in a "home reading a book" way - if they're cutting a day out of the working week for energy conservation, you know that residential areas are likely getting rolling blackouts, then restrictions on using your own car soon to follow (not to mention public transport getting the boot too). A government declaring "wed off" is going to come with massive restrictions soon after that sucks the fun out of a day off. It wouldn't be a day chilling in the AC and going out taking care of some errands - unless you have solar panels hooked up, you're not going to want to even open your fridge.

zuss33 Mar 17, 2026 +9
Not if you’re poor and need to work to feed your family for the week.
9
Wonderful-Process792 Mar 17, 2026 +3
It only applies to government institutions, schools, and universities. One think is for sure you can bet the farmers (30% of employment) won't be taking Wednesday off!
3
schewb Mar 17, 2026 +3
I took last Wednesday off because I had an appointment with a new dentist. It barely took any longer than a usual cleaning and I went home and played video games all afternoon. Wednesdays off kick ass.
3
OutlyingPlasma Mar 17, 2026 +2
It sounds good until you realize everything else is closed so you can't go anywhere or do anything, including all the kind of tasks you need to do on a 7-5 schedule like go to the doctor or bank.
2
Solsticeoftherevered Mar 17, 2026 +3
Still sounds great to be honest, a day where you can just chill. Or do non official tasks, ie, cleaning the room, tearing out the weeds, talking to your children -- if you feel need for productivity.

Just for the government sector, the private sector is more or less screwed sideways because they will 100% have to work and the govt has also announced they’ll restrict public transport on Wednesday as well.
1
Dr_Pippin Mar 17, 2026 +1
It is. I work M, T, Th, F, plus 8-12 every other Saturday. Having Wednesday off every week lets me easily schedule appointments, etc. without having to think about it. And I have created a fun routine of taking my kids to lunch for BBQ every Wednesday. This summer will mark 5 years since I started doing weekly BBQ lunches.

I had that schedule once. It wasn't great pay wise, but mental health wise it was incredible. It was an exhausting job in a toddler room at a daycare, and even though I love kids at that age it was DRAINING. When I had my schedule changed to have Wednesday off , I knew all I ever had to do was get through 2 days.

One can only hope that somehow this buffoon actually shifts the world permanently to a 4 day work week. He is cancer, but maybe.. in a weird way, he’s also the cure. Of course not by anything he’s done intentionally, but as the world reacts to the insanity he’s trying to create. (I know most people will disagree with me, but I can’t help but to look for something good to come out of this. Or at least a path to a better future in his wake. The alternative just makes me want to tap out early.)

Remember when there were "essential workers", back when the economy needed people to risk their lives going in to work? And you don't hear that anymore, and none of those workers got any kind of long term monetary reward? If you want a 4 day work week, you want stronger united labour unions. Not a money-saving half-measure that will be reverted immediately when it's no longer required in favour of productivity.

ClawingDevil Mar 17, 2026 +13
This is my hope, and has been since before he got re-elected, too. A few years of horror but then a sharp swing away from everything he stands for. So, a major turn to left wing politics, environmentalism, taxing the asset class, and your lovely suggestion of a 4 day week (it's needed).

The IMF rn rubbing its hands
132
garret1033 Mar 17, 2026 +116
If there’s one thing the IMF loves, it’s not being paid back. Second only to giving countries who default loans— which they also won’t pay back.
116
WeeBabySeamus Mar 17, 2026 +34
Can you explain this? I’ve seen a few references to IMF predatory lending but I can’t seem to find anything well sourced or I’m searching wrong
34
censored_username Mar 17, 2026 +48
Part of the IMF's job is to act as the lender of last resort. Which means it often ends up being the party borrowing money to those who are at a high risk of not being able to pay them back. Now the reason for this is simple: because even a broken system is generally preferable to the humanitarian disaster that is a total collapse. Now what people generally criticise the IMF for over this is that they tend to attach strings to their loans, often in the from of requiring economic reforms. This is usually what the critique centers on, and why some people consider the IMF as preying on these countries. Alternatively they can instead critique that the IMF gives loans way too easily on such delinquent countries. which is another critique that can be given. But it is a complex item to criticise, because without a lender of last resort, the world is rendered far less stable, which has negative impacts for everyone else.

Maeserk Mar 17, 2026 +63
I believe it may be a reference to the 1997 Asian Market crisis, where despite having sound fiscal policies a lot of Asian countries faced financial pressures and instability in their currency and valuation. Started mainly with the collapse of the Thai baht. But it’s crazy complex and not all exhausted in this comment. But hopefully sends you down the right path. The international money fund, IMF, stepped in with bailout package of $40 billion, with conditional payment based on economic reforms, a “structural adjustment package”, so to say. These SAPs called for reduced spending, allowing insolvent companies to fail and aggressively raise interest rates. This in the modern day has had a massive effect on the liberalization of the financial markets in Asia, and was criticized as a “fast-track” rather than a sound reasonable financial recovery, because during a recession usually you increase spending, prop up companies and lower interest rates, (if you’re a Keynesian). The whole debacle basically turned Asia into the IMF’s desired economic development forum. The Asian markets were so fucked by their currency and lack of financial stability they basically did whatever the IMF asked or their leaders would be taken out back. For example, this crisis ended the 31 year reign of Indonesia’s dictator, Suharto, it was that bad. IMF in turn made out like bandits, as they charged high interest rates for numerous reasons, mainly currency stabilization; the financial landscape of the Asian markets were forever changed, and more pro capitalism in economic outlook, and depending who you ask, it worked (from a financial perspective it did, the markets recovered in 1999). I recommend you look more into the 1997 Asian financial crisis as it’s a very complex crash with multiple causes, and remedies offered, but IMF was a big player. If a country faces financial trouble, most likely IMF will come in and have a say about their future fiscal policy.
63
Upset_Development_64 Mar 17, 2026 +9
Wow, thank you for the new topic and writeup, this sounds interesting. And frankly as I get older I get curious as to how so many countries got sucked into the cancer to life that is capitalism.
9
patentlyconfused Mar 17, 2026 +5
Search the Washington Consensus for more information. It’s a particularly predatory form of hyper capitalist ideology in the late eighties/early nineties used to strong arm vulnerable economies and political actors into accepting economic reform programs that redistributed wealth in developing countries away from citizens to the advantageously poised elite. Instead of allowing debt stricken countries to default on their loans (often accumulated during repressive military regimes and supported by the same institutions now pushing reforms), the IMF and other banking institutions offered loans to prop up the struggling economies, which were contingent upon deregulation and privatization. It was not limited to Asia and had massive repercussions in Latin America and Africa as well.
5
casualguitarist Mar 17, 2026 +3
> 1997 Asian Market crisis, where despite having **sound fiscal policies** a lot of Asian countries faced financial pressures and instability in their currency and valuation What's the source of this? International banks were lending before and after the event so it seems like the "liberalization" you're referring to was already taking place. If that's true then your whole argument becomes pretty weak. Also IMF is supposed to be the LAST resort lender and they certainly act like one so you're correct. Meaning a whole a lot of stuff has to go wrong before this which you don't really include in there.
3
not_perfect_yet Mar 17, 2026 +2
The IMF is an institution that uses money to do "a coup without a coup". The acting parties stay the same, but the loan conditions force politics that amount to a takeover. Often through privatization and market liberalization. >"Well over a trillion dollars worth of state-owned firms have been privatized since 1980. The traditional argument is that governments choose to privatize in response to fiscal pressures. In this study, the authors examine the impact of IFI conditionally on privatization and find that IMF conditionally, in particular, has an important indirect economic benefit. Investors are willing to pay more for privatized assets in countries that owe the IMF money (and hence that are subject to the policy constraints attached to the loans)." https://www.elibrary.imf.org/view/journals/024/2004/002/article-A001-en.xml As you can see, they're not hiding it either. The people who could be protesting it either don't have the power to do it, don't care, or don't read these kinds of papers. So not being paid back only means they can increase the severity of the conditions, and accelerate the takeover.
2
tadsagtasgde Mar 17, 2026 +3
The IMF doesn’t give a shit about being paid back. Defaulting the point. Then they privatize national goods and services.

I'm not even sure what I'd love more, a donut week (two work, day off, two work, two off) or 4 work - 3 off Most of all I'd love for Sri Lanka to not default though. It's one of the loveliest places I've been to, with amazing people
28
broadsword_1 Mar 17, 2026 +18
> I'm not even sure what I'd love more, a donut week (two work, day off, two work, two off) or 4 work - 3 off I've done the 3-off for 6 month stints twice over a decade; it's more amazing than you can possible imagine. Immediate lifestyle benefit - like so fast you wouldn't believe it. The mid-week break is no slouch either, if you're in 'work mode' on the Wed it means you don't mind getting through so many 'driving around' errands since it completely opens up your weekend.
18
Winjin Mar 17, 2026 +8
So like it's that you either get amazing weekends with a day that is completely free from "unwinding from work" and "preparing for more work" versus "ultra-productive errands day that frees up the shorter weekends"
8
broadsword_1 Mar 17, 2026 +8
In either case, the 'extra day off' is best spent doing all the errand/maintenance things that chew into your weekend - in my experience it's easier to keep up the motivation to do them on a Wed than it is on a Friday (also appointments like the dentist are easier to get on a Wed). At my peak, I was getting weekly groceries on the drive home on Thursday night, when the stores were dead quiet. For a while it felt like I had a cheat-code for office work.
8
Winjin Mar 17, 2026 +3
I'd say in general, even with a 5-day week, it's better to try and cram as much into weekdays as you can, though it often seems like you don't have the energy to do it.. Turns out one of the reasons is because you're working all weekends too, it's just housework.
3
tagged2high Mar 17, 2026 +2
I looked at a job with a 4 day work week, but they wanted 10hr days for those 4. I didn't like the idea at the time, but I could maybe consider it if I was looking at a similar option in the future.

I work 32 hours, have been free on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at different times. Wednesday was the worst option, it felt like having two Mondays. Thursdays off felt like having two Fridays. And Fridays off is a long weekend.

I wonder if this will have any long term impact. Not financially, but in the way oil is viewed going forward in terms of national security risk. Of course this isn't the first time that's ever been tested, but it is a major reminder in a time when other options are becoming more widely available.

Yeah thats the only positive. Maybe finally nations will start to see the importance of not depending on some dictator in the middle east (and the us wars)

This isn’t Sri Lanka’s first oil shortage in recent memory.
40
th3_pund1t Mar 17, 2026 +34
The last time, they didn’t have money to buy oil. This time, they don’t have money to buy oil either, but there is no oil to buy too.

Wednesdays off is only for the state sector. The private sector - those of whom are not already on hybrid or WFH mode - will go on as usual.

During the 3 day week in the UK employers generally laid everyone off on the closed days so they could claim unemployment benefits then rehired them all two days later.
14
Digifiend84 Mar 17, 2026 +12
That can't be legal.

It was the 70s, things were a lot more slack back then

Minimum-Geologist-58 Mar 17, 2026 +3
It was a way to make things work tolerated by the government. They didn’t want more people on strike or more industrial shut down.
3
malibuklw Mar 17, 2026 +2
It could be. Legal in my state in the US Edited to add of at least was during covid shutdowns, perhaps it was a temporary thing
2
malibuklw Mar 17, 2026 +2
I know someone in the US whose employer did that during covid. 1 day unemployment a week.

I'm just completed playing Resident Evil 4. Never played in this universe before. I was reading some of the lore. I don't want to spoil (a decades old game, but still, it was new to me!), so I won't get too far into it. One of the lines hit me though. Paraphrasing, because I don't remember the actual line "Mind control even one insider in a government and you can control the entire government" .......when was this written?? I stopped right there for a few seconds. Mind control can come into many forms. Feels very familiar right now.

Yes, but it’s also hyper accelerated. Like, we aren’t supposed to be doing the energy war that h******* for another 30 years.

Weekend, work two days, day off, work two days, weekend. It's perpetually Thursday, Friday. I had a schedule lined this once - it was the best schedule I ever had.

yoloqueuesf Mar 17, 2026 +53
Yeah, honestly if i had to pick, wednesday off would be my go-to. Give 2 days of good work, take a break, and then another 2 days of good work and you've rested 2 days. Might probably be a good solution but i doubt any big corp would be willing to try this.

OhWhatsHisName Mar 17, 2026 +3
(I wanted to post this in case any company or management is interested in this and wants some starting points) I was once on a team in a corporate office that was discussing a 4 day work week. The bigger deal was that many of the things we did ended up keeping us clocked in beyond quitting time, but since they didn't want to pay overtime, they often let us leave early on Fridays to make up for it. The flip side issue is that the team got really low staffed on Fridays, and if anything came up on a Friday afternoon evening, then everyone stuck there would be getting overtime. So they thought of a 4 day work week of 4x10s. Everyone on the team liked this idea. We couldn't have a super low staffed Wednesday though, so we thought of a rotation schedule. An individual would have Monday off one week, Tuesday the next, Wednesday the next, and so on. Everyone's schedule would be varied so that on any given day, only a fraction of the team was out. Shifts could be traded between individuals if needed. We also discussed a permanent schedule (you would always have X day off), the issue here was the high interest in people wanting Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays off, so how do we decide who to screw in getting their less preferred day off? Additionally, we worried this would have lead into less shift swapping, which people saw as a benefit to flexibility. Upper management pushed back that if many people wanted to take a particular day off, you already had a few people off because of their schedule, plus a few people off via PTO, so potentially a lot of people off. We countered that that is why the trading shifts would be beneficial, people who wanted a particular day off could trade for it (saving their PTO), but upper management countered with potentially Friday being a none day off, and only rotating Mon-Thurs (obviously they just viewed this as essentially giving this team more PTO and wanted to avoid that). Another pushback was "team cohesion" and issues with team meetings. There was a big company wide shakeup so this team completely shifted focus anyway, but there was whole team but in from this, and I think if it weren't for the redirection, it would have been implemented one way or another.

> I had a schedule lined this once - it was the best schedule I ever had. Same with me, my job at the time was warehouse work which was nothing fancy...but working 10 hours a day on MTTF happens to be the only schedule I looked back to nostalgically even though I work comfortably at an office now. Having a mini-weekend in the middle of the week and being able to run errands while avoiding any encounter with more crowds in malls and supermarkets on Saturday/Sunday was just amazing
14
iprobablybrokeit Mar 17, 2026 +2
I like the way you think, but my brain is just like, "two Mondays a week sounds awful".
2
IntoThePeople Mar 17, 2026 +46
As stated in the article, they didn't want government offices closed 3 days in a row.
46
Brilliant_Object_847 Mar 17, 2026 +46
Because a break in the middle of the week is the best. Mondays always suck no matter what, and everyone’s halfway out the door on Fridays anyways.
46
Iceman9161 Mar 17, 2026 +9
If you give everyone 3 day weekends, they have more opportunities to take trips and use fuel/energy. A midweek day off means it’s unlikely that many people will travel
9
dayyaanboy Mar 17, 2026 +8
To prevent people from having long weekends so they might not go on holidays and use fuel
8
IWantMyYandere Mar 17, 2026 +27
Hopefully a lot of countries decouple from oil and pursue other forms of energy like renewables & nuclear.

I mean, that's one way to implement a 4 day work week... but wow does it suck interrupting the midweek with a day off instead of having a 3 day weekend...
3

I always say taking a day off mid-week is so nice, my back account doesn't like it but my mind account really enjoys it
3
thedrivingfrog Mar 17, 2026 +3
Horrible fact: companies could pay your full salary to work 3 days a week and pay another person yo work the other 3 (stack one day for co op work). And still make profit maybe even more due to increase productivity. The working culture is a fallacy for the rich if people realize how much a billion is vs a million people would realize how fleeced we are getting. A million seconds is 12 days. A billion seconds is 31 years. A trillion seconds is 31,688 years. Think those numbers in dollars, billionaires and the govemrent  don't need us to work so much at all.

important to note this is only for government institutions (including schools). people in the private sector still have to work, though private organisations were requested to close.

Didn't Sri Lanka have a fuel crisis a couple years ago and went into anarchy for a bit? Yeah this shit gonna be bad lol
2
Vihaking Mar 17, 2026 +2
yes it did and yes we ended up throwing out a president around that time but the problem this time is that its not a corrupt dumbass government but a middle eastern war and theres nothing we can do but bear the storm until things settle its only a few weeks until they pull out the power cuts lmao ah shit here we go again
2
Vihaking Mar 17, 2026 +2

Trump is the best advert for renewable energy and EVs possible. Asia is the region that would benefit the most from a huge solar adoption yet there is relatively very little. I was in Thailand a few weeks ago and was very surprised to see how few buildings had solar PV. I expect that might change. I wonder if that make me pro-Trump?

Here in Canada, they are making everyone go to the office now even tho most work can be done at home So didn't worry, it'll all offset

You think the Sri Lanka reasoning is because of the environment? Couldn’t be bothered to read just the first sentence in this article? They have a shortage of essentials cause of the conflict in Middle East
