St. Denis Medical might be the best comedy running now.

Posted by oldscotch

The ending of season 2 is one of the best episodes of TV I've seen. The writing, the acting, the editing - everything is top notch. Highly recommended.

David Allen Grier is the best comedic actor on TV. He nails that role perfectly.

I miss the first two seasons of *In Living Color*.

The season 2 finale was so good. The whole season was really great and had me laughing but man the finale had me in my feelings in the best way. They’ve really hit their stride. I loved Superstore so much so I was also predisposed to like it.

mattromo Apr 8, 2026 +36
I find its very Superstore adjacent and that is how I am pitching to people who ask me for a new show to watch.
36
Aubameywang Apr 8, 2026 +16
Well it was made by the same folks who did Superstore (and American Auto) so it makes sense. I love all 3.
16
nathwithanh Apr 9, 2026 +1
*American Auto* season 1 was just OK but season 2 was great. I tried to get people to watch it to no avail, as I so often do with so many shows that get canceled after one or two seasons.

ibeckman671 Apr 8, 2026 +5
I'm glad some of the Superstore cast makes cameo appearances too. Kaliko Kauahi is in it more and more and I love it. More Nico Santos!

Damn it, I am gonna watch it then hahah

Can you help me understand what happens in superstore between seasons 1 and 2? It confused me so much, it took me out of the enjoyment and i havent watched past the second episode of s2 but i really really liked s1
-7
Craphole-Island Apr 8, 2026 +12
I’m not sure what you mean? I think season 2 of superstore is a big step up from season 1 (which I think is also great). I think season 2 and 3 are the peak of the show! But if you’re watching on Hulu, they have the Olympics episode as the first one of season 2 but it’s really a random holdover from season 1 that got aired out of order and is admittedly a weaker episode. The start of season 2 is the fallout from their strike in the S1 finale. I think it’s great!
12
SabastianG Apr 8, 2026 +1
Gotcha yeah i was referring to the weird first episode of season 2 that you are saying was a holdover from s1 but out of order. It was like that on peacock too which is where i was watching it. So the story breaking up weird from s1 finale to s2 ep1 and then again s2 ep2, it just completely threw me off. But if s2 ep2 keeps on from the s1 finale and keeps continuity like youre saying then i guess ill have to het back to it then!
1
Craphole-Island Apr 8, 2026 +5
Yes it does! Season 2 ep 1 is actually called “Strike” and picks up immediately after the S1 finale leaves off (in the parking lot). I def recommend you keep going!

Bruce is my favorite character on TV right now. He’s so funny
89
shotgunocelot Apr 8, 2026 +20
He was the best part of Mortal Kombat, too. He was tragically underutilized in Superstore
20
Luchalma89 Apr 8, 2026 +5
But I legitimately think he was the best part of Superstore.

HardcoreKaraoke Apr 8, 2026 +17
I'm hoping it catches on so it gets a second season. I keep recommending it to anyone who likes 30 Rock. I'm worried the idea of it being a "sports comedy" will turn people off who don't watch sports, but it really isn't about sports. If you like Tracy Morgan's shtick and Tina Fey's style of comedy you'll enjoy it. I want to see Bobby Moynihan get more love too. He's so funny.
17
uuhson Apr 8, 2026 +7
It really feels like a Tracy Jordan spinoff, which the world needed imo
7
nathwithanh Apr 9, 2026 +3
One thing I like about Reggie that separates him from Tracy Jordan a bit is that he's arguably the most emotionally intelligent of all the characters on the show.
3
uuhson Apr 9, 2026 +3
I hadn't really noticed that until now and you're right
3
nathwithanh Apr 9, 2026 +1
I do think NBC wants to stay in business with this creative team, so while I don't know what the ratings look like, I feel pretty good about a renewal.
1
ex0thermist Apr 8, 2026
I like sports and I like the Tina Fey style of comedy. But Tracy Morgan's schtick makes him very much a supporting player for me, I don't think I want to watch him leading a show.

sup3rdr01d Apr 8, 2026 +13
It's pretty funny. Lots of hilarious nfl references too
13
KelVarnsen_2023 Apr 8, 2026 +21
It really might be the best sitcom on TV and it's only had like 8 episodes. So many hilarious random lines and gags like NYPD Chicago and the bit about 50 Cent's beef with Colin Jost.
21
sourdough_squirrel Apr 8, 2026 +12
> We pull this off, people are going to see me in a whole new light, like they did after Pharrell's movie. Did you know he grew up LEGO? is easily the hardest I've laughed at anything this year.
12
KelVarnsen_2023 Apr 8, 2026 +3
I liked the like from Megan Thee Stallion's character about how she had her kids that night because her ex was watching the Morgan Freeman/Jake Paul fight with his friends. Although there was some great bits in the most recent episode, especially the little bit of Reggie narration at the beginning like "Previously on this thing" and then at the end of the recap "Oh snap! Now what?".

It's missing the bit about them showing up early to the fire because they weren't aware of the time zone difference, which I think was my favorite one.

1
devlindisguise Apr 8, 2026 +10
Reggie Dinkins is pound for pound funnier than St Denis Medical this season, it's packed with so much jokes that I rewatch episodes and catch hilarious jokes that I missed the first time around. But St Denis Medical really improved a ton this season. They had a better grasp of what's funny. Alex (the "straightman") as focus didn't lend to much comedy. Making her a little weirder and focusing more on the ensemble really did a lot. Bruce is just the best.

nathwithanh Apr 9, 2026 +1
Hahaha yeah I was gonna say, I don't even think *St. Denis* is the best comedy show in its one-hour block! *Reggie Dinkins* has been just so incredibly funny in that way that seemingly only this Tina Fey / Robert Carlock tree can write these bizarre lines for Tracy Morgan and friends. That *St. Denis* season finale was some phenomenal TV, though, it's true. Probably the best the show has ever been.
1
huskersax Apr 9, 2026 +1
Feels like a show that will be weigjed down by its name and marketing push and be a cult hit 3 years after it's cancelled.
1
shelwood46 Apr 8, 2026 +14
I really enjoy the characters on this show. I didn't realize it was the season finale, can't wait for S3.

johnnyma45 Apr 8, 2026 +35
It's fun watching the Pitt, St. Denis and then Scrubs back to back to back. So many different varietals of medical drama/comedy

And everything that is not the best thing ever is utter dog shit. There is no difference between a solid B+ and abject failure. They are the same.

I watched few episodes last month and got really hooked on it 😂 The cast has amazing chemistry together and you can tell they're having fun with the material. Maybe not the absolute best comedy out there but it's definitely underrated - the medical setting gives them so many opportunities for both dark humor and heartwarming moments. Been meaning to catch up on season 2 since I heard good things about how they wrapped it up. The writing feels more natural than lot of other workplace comedies that try too hard to be quirky 💀
10
TheSecondEikonOfFire Apr 8, 2026 +5

I really enjoyed Stumble. I was surprised how good it was. Good writing and acting. Not too cheesy, but still goofy humor. Great show. Really wanna see another season. Compared to St. Denis, I’d take Stumble every time. St. Denis just doesn’t make me laugh much. And yes. Scrubs is great too!

CBenson1273 Apr 8, 2026 +6
Scrubs would also like a word.
6
SoWrongItsPainful Apr 8, 2026
Scrubs really doesn’t have the sauce. The new cast is really uninteresting besides the normal ish Surgeon resident/intern. The lack of Cox, Perlah, Ted, Kelso, and Janitor really leaves it feeling hollow, none of the new characters fill the void. The younger cast should have been relegated to bit parts like Todd and Hooch. We didn’t need new versions of the core 3. We needed proper replacements for the side characters that are no longer there. Also Vanessa Bauer ruins every scene she’s in.
0
CBenson1273 Apr 8, 2026 +7
Agree to disagree. I find it hilarious.
7
SoWrongItsPainful Apr 8, 2026 -8
I too find “doctor is obsessed with her phone” jokes really funny and totally not played out. Or tell me if you heard this one before, “really clumsy guy can’t talk to a girl so he’s quasi mentored by Chad looking guy who doesn’t care about anything.” Really funny. Totally what made the OG show good.
-8
CBenson1273 Apr 8, 2026 +8
You don’t have to find it funny. That’s fine. That doesn’t mean other people can’t.
8
FunkTronto Apr 8, 2026 -8
Sure, how about ‘No’
-8
CBenson1273 Apr 8, 2026 +6

6
WintersDoomsday Apr 9, 2026 +1
No best comedy yes, best show is The Pitt
1
asherlevi Apr 9, 2026 +1
I think the writing on the Pitt leaves a lot to be desired. Season two has had some outright painful lines. That one actress in season one who was written off in season two was also painful to watch act. Finally, the Pitt adds nothing, it’s another medical drama with a one-shift gimmick. Edit - but the show running, cinematography, and the actress playing head nurse are best in class.

It’s odd, shows like this and superstore have all been trying to replicate the office’s success, but to diminishing returns. They’re both, fun, borderline great, but nothing close to achieving the office’s original and current success. Goes to show how important casting and having a great group together is.
-6
WildMajesticUnicorn Apr 8, 2026 +1
Both are from Justin Spitzer. IMO, the cast of St Dennis has some great performances, especially David Allen Grier. I think the writing doesn’t live up to the cast. They haven’t figured out how to use Wendy.

6
Apprehensive_War173 Apr 8, 2026 +4
I went into it pretty casually and ended up getting way more attached than I expected. The characters feel just grounded enough that the jokes land without feeling forced. That season 2 ending really caught me off guard, too. It somehow balanced being funny and a little emotional at the same time, which not every comedy can pull off.

2
vortex1775 Apr 8, 2026 +6
I like the characters well enough but there's something about the overall show that just feels really forced. The comedy doesn't seem as natural as Abbot Elementary, it kind of feels like I'm watching a mashup of Parks & Rec, Superstore, and The Pitt. Edit to add: I think it might be that I just don't find it to be a really convincing group of co-workers. The characters are excellent, but it just seems like these comedic characters were picked up tossed in scrubs, and dropped in a hospital. Watching it only Joyce and Alex seem really coworker-ish. When I watch Abbot I don't really question that this is a group of people who work together, some for years, similarly with other work place comedies like Parks, Superstore, The Office etc.
6
KhausTO Apr 8, 2026 +4
I mean... It is a hospital comedy, in a mockumentary format made by the creator of Superstore. So uh yeah it kinda is a mashup of those three.
4
oldscotch Apr 8, 2026 +1
Yeah it did start off kinda awkward, almost like they were all getting to know each other and not just Matt. It does iron itself out as it goes though, the later half of the second season has been great.
1
ex0thermist Apr 8, 2026 +1
You don't think Dr. Ron feels like a real coworker of the others?! I find David Allen Grier's performance to be so natural and believable I can absolutely believe he's a jaded doctor dealing with all these younger goofballs.
1
RobertMacMillan Apr 8, 2026 +1
There's sort of a spectrum in the mockumentary "genre". On one hand you have The Office or The Paper where the characters are more grounded, and then on the other side where you have Parks and Rec, Brooklyn99 and St. Denis Medical where the characters are more like cartoon characters. Personally I prefer the prior, and a short-lived show that really nailed it was the british series Borderline (set in an airport). I enjoy all of them, but sometimes I'm not in the mood for the more cartoonish type.

TootieSummers Apr 8, 2026 -1
I’ve really enjoyed and it has improved tremendously since the beginning but I can’t get behind the forced pairing they’re doing. Those two have had zero chemistry and still don’t have it. It feels like they’re insisting on a relationship on the show just to have one. Honestly, I don’t care for the Matt character at all which is probably why I don’t care much for his pairing off. The character is pretty one note and hasn’t been all that funny. He didn’t even become that interesting to me until Bruce decided he was his best friend in the hospital. But it’s Bruce that makes that interesting.

It was better than the average network comedy but still very safe. Feels like Scrubs coming back killed any momentum it was gaining.
