Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord : I stopped watching Star Wars stuff a long time ago but I gotta say this shows been a very pleasant surprise. And the animation is top notch!

I stopped watching Star Wars after that Rian Johnson fiasco. So I have no idea what's going on in the current universe or whatever. Somebody said this show was great so I took a flyer on it and I honestly gotta say it really is fantastic. The animation style is about as good as you're going to see in modern TV. Looks amazing! The story is engaging, the characters are intriguing. Good pacing, etcetera All in all I recommend it with no qualifications

You should watch Andor, OP. It’s the best Star Wars thing ever written

Oh right I forgot I did watch andor, which almost doesn't really feel like Star Wars really. But it's incredible for sure

What’s base level of stars wars knowledge I’d need to watch?

So far not much. Only thing you need to know is: - it takes place sometime after episode 3 and before episode 4 (early in the Empire’s reign) - maul took over a criminal syndicate in the clone wars tv show. The crime syndicate took over a planet, and at the end of the clown wars tv show the planet was freed. Maul escaped. The show seems to be focusing on him rebuilding the syndicate on a new planet.

>at the end of the clown wars tv show Haha, that'd be a riot.

Not just one syndicate, several. He was basically boss of all bosses of the galactic underworld, but went dark with the end of the Clone Wars and the various syndicates thought he was gone and proceeded accordingly. Now he's emerged from hiding and putting them back in line.

you just need to know who maul is from phantom menace and maybe clone wars basics, rest gets explained pretty well in the episodes

I barely remember the phantom menace, all I remember is the guy is a bad guy. It's good enough, the show explains stuff as it goes along

He died in that movie. Lightsabered in half. Then Lucas retconned it to bring him back for Clone Wars. The Dathomir witches conjured him up some metal legs. Before that he had hobbled together a massive spider-like lower half made of metal and he was going insane until they fixed him up. Also has a brother that looks like him but is yellow named Savage Opress, lol. Then he died for good in Rebels in an amazing sequence that I won't spoil but Rebels is easily the best SW cartoon imo. Starts off seeming like a kid's show and quickly gets awesome and very serious and serialized.

It's gotta be the best looking CG animation I've ever seen. It looks f****** incredible. So good that if I didn't already know it was a cartoon and the characters weren't stylized the way they are in that Clone Wars style with the angular faces/sharp edges etc then I'd think some scenes were live action. It's honestly amazing to look at.

The world so far looks like a cross between Blade Runner and an oil painting. It’s really beautiful looking.

That's a f****** great description 🤘

Ever seen Arcane?

Watched the first season, thought the plot was average at best (bring on the downvotes lol). The art style was cool though but it still very much looks like a cartoon.

Same boat, bailed after TLJ and somehow got dragged back in by this. The animation’s stupidly good. If you’re enjoying Maul, you might actually vibe with Andor next.

The comparisons to "Heat" are apt, as a lot of it is basically a cops vs criminals story so far.

I was losing my love for the saga because no other project gave me the emotions that episode 8 had given me. Maul is making me experience the same emotions, but Star Wars animation always proves to be a point of reference.

The animation looks incredible. The ~~Coruscant~~ Janix backgrounds are genuinely beautiful.

KONODIODAMUDAMUDA Apr 9, 2026 +3
The planet is actually Janix, I definitely understand how you think it's coruscant though.

The_Wattsatron Apr 9, 2026 +1
Now that you point it out, it’s tremendously obvious that it’s not Coruscant in hindsight. Thanks for the correction.

Dan_Of_Time Apr 9, 2026 +1
I thought it was Coruscant the whole time too. I was really confused when they said if they alert the Empire they would "take over" the planet.

I dont really see a point to this story unless it’s *not really* about Maul seeing as how he just gets jobbed by old Ben in like 5 years

Bluest_waters Apr 9, 2026 +4
The point? Entertainment

Kayyam Apr 9, 2026 +3
I'm gonna go on a wild guess but the show is likely set before that happens.
3
LostInStatic Apr 9, 2026 -1
Correct, as evidenced by how I said “in 5 years!”! Andor didn’t have this issue because the show wasn’t really about him.
-1
Kayyam Apr 9, 2026 +3
I don't see this issue you keep talking about. Everyone dies. What's the issue?

LostInStatic Apr 9, 2026 -1
Developing doomed characters as well as Maul being largely irrelevant to the timeline after he got cut in half in Ep 1

Demerzel69 Apr 9, 2026 +1
If you think Maul was irrelevant after TPM you're very wrong. He had zero development until Lucas allowed him to be brought back in TCW. Filoni et al turned him into an awesome character with immense growth and char. dev. in TCW and Rebels.

Dan_Of_Time Apr 9, 2026 +1
> Andor didn’t have this issue because the show wasn’t really about him. There was a larger side to the Rebellion story sure, but the show was also 100% about Andor's growth as a person into a rebel and into a leader. Maul is kind of the opposite. The version we see in CW is very different to the one in Rebels where he meets his end. He's an interesting character because he is so doomed. He goes from running crime syndicates and conquering Mandalore to essentially a hermit with only his desire for revenge on Obi Wan left.

Did you not watch the prequels because you knew Anakin becomes Darth Vader?
