It is better to learn from mistakes than to defend one.

Considering how things are playing out, its possible they could get a formal associate agreement like Norway out of it, though according to the article single market participation is supposed to be a no go for Labor. But you're right, it'd be nice to see *someone* pull out of a free fall into authoritarian BS.

Putin is somewhere doing backflips. Santions eased, Russian oil in demand, no more US support for Ukraine, US dollar and European influence diminished, and now they might pull out of NATO. It's almost like Trump is a Russian asset or something.

Cunegonde_gardens Apr 1, 2026 +1
Inadvertent, probably. but I get your point.

Auzziesurferyo Apr 1, 2026 +1
Trump just can't quit NATO.  Only a congressional super majority can do that. Trump can thank Marco Rubio for that piece of brilliant legislation, back when Rubio actually cared about the USA and its allies.

Answer70 Apr 1, 2026 +1
He's done about 1,787 things that legally he shouldn't be able to do. Congressional power doesn't seem to exist anymore.

In reality Russia lost the cold war, the only country ready to pick up the reigns is China. It won't be long before more countries start turning to China to fill the void trump is creating making America great if you are a billionaire.

The states pulling out of Nato is the worse nightmare for Putin.
1
VanCardboardbox Apr 1, 2026 +1
What is the case for Putin fearing a weakened and fractured NATO, the very thing he has been working for decades to achieve?

Cute-Ad2879 Apr 1, 2026 +1
How so?

Doubtful. That was the whole play.

Never should have left the EU, huh UK?

ianjm Apr 1, 2026 +1
As a Brit, I wholeheartedly agree.

Darth-mickyluv Apr 1, 2026 +1
Well, obviously. Unfortunately, the US doesn't have a monopoly on morons. We grow plenty of our own, too.

AintnoEend Apr 1, 2026 +1
Should the USA leave NATO? As someone from the EU, i (of course) have an opinion on this and i would not be surprised if there are opinions from all over the world. Sooo i wonder what yours is.

Opposite-Bowler-2427 Apr 1, 2026 +1
With Trump in the driver's seat it really doesn't matter. He's not trustworthy, so NATO might as well treat them like they're no longer part of it. In fact, they SHOULD treat it like they no longer are.
1
AintnoEend Apr 1, 2026 +1
I think that congress is still in favour of NATO. right? So Trump cannot make the USA leave NATO. He can only shout and not help NATO allies. until he is overruled by congress.
1
Entegy Apr 1, 2026 +1
Tell me, how many changes to things Congress is in charge of has Congress blocked Trump from changing?
1
AintnoEend Apr 1, 2026 +1
I think there were zero situations where a 2/3 majority was needed from Congress

If they do, the US hegemony will start becoming undone. It wont fall the next day of course, but its the beginning of the slow end. They will start losing the influence they had on the world. This war is already showing that, even from a military standpoint. I think everybody involves knows it. And that is why I think Trump wont do it, he likes to play emperor as we have been seeing. What he is doing is simply threatening to pull out so that Europe gets scared and do what he wants them to. But he's doing such a poor job of it, that it comes off like a kid throwing a tantrum than actual threats.

At this point in time I have zero faith in the US honouring Article 5 commitments anyway. So it's a moot point.
1
CantFeelMyToesAgain Apr 1, 2026 +1
They absolutely should not, as they are the only country to ever invoke article 5.  Thousands of lives lost for the US for their wars. If they do leave, say goodbye to weapon sales that make up a healthy majority of the money they make.  They would begin to attack allies/create false flags to try to spread their pseudo Christian beliefs riddled with disinformation.  The US would become the next North Korea if they did and most countries would gravitate towards Britain, France and China (the exact opposite of what Trump wants).  China would fill in the gaps for weapon sales, while Britain and France continue support for their allies while smaller countries heavily invest in their militaries.  If the US withdraws from NATO, they become the paper tiger (I’d argue they already are now with Trump at the helm). You can only succeed with allies and money which is something the US seems to take for granted.

SPACE_ICE Apr 1, 2026 +1
while I agree with the sentiment and all the other points, I really need to be pedantic here and point out that the us did not invoke article 5, the british secretary of nato did so indepedently after Powell told him the us didn't have an interest in it but would look favorably if they did so on their own. Not sure why this tidbit gets thrown out a lot buts it pretty easy to find. Regardless after the suppprt given during the iraq and afghanistan war the point still stands but please for the love of history don't repeat incorrect facts. Yea is completely understandable. From an EU perspective, NATO isn’t just a US. tool it’s a shared security system that keeps stability in Europe, especially with tensions involving Russia.

UK, France and Germany need their nuclear umbrella yesterday.

Uk and France has nukes.

Auzziesurferyo Apr 1, 2026 +1
Trump can't just quit NATO.  >To prevent a unilateral withdrawal, Congress passed a bipartisan law as part of the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). This statute explicitly prohibits any U.S. President from leaving NATO unless they obtain a two-thirds supermajority vote in the Senate (67 out of 100 senators). Trump has Marco Rubio to thank for that.  Rubio was so concerned that Trump would pull us out of NATO that he had a law passed stating that only congress super majority could decide that. That was back when Rubio actually cared about the country.

AintnoEend Apr 1, 2026 +1
True, but trump can delay or withhold support for a NATO alley.

Brexit biggest farce in UK geopolitics. Can see why Trump and adjacent politicians supported it, as outside the EU it's shark infested waters, hard for smaller states to maintain any autonomy at all with the US and China prowling for weaklings to consume. The regarded relationship between UK and the US, is such a joke and always has been.

Bleakwind Apr 1, 2026 +1
Uk as a nation cannot afford anymore stupidity. Uk has taken some serious heavy hits since the 2008 financial crisis. Cameron’s dogma on government cuts hallowed out a country’s hope and punished the working people who in turn voted for Brexit against their best interest because they feel the pain but can’t seem to pinpoint the cause, so they breed vile things like farage who pointed the finger to poor people and migrates. Then Covid hit and under Boris we had no plans, no contingency, just lockdown after lockdown. Then Ukraine’s invasion by Russia which hurt our very natural gas heavy energy grid. Then the lettuce. Uk don’t have much room left for any more shocks to the system. We literally have months left till a very possible ai bubble burst and trigger a 1.6-2 trillion dollar write off and China’s poised to invade Taiwan.

And the daily mail which, during another time of gathering storm clouds in 1934, published an editorial by its owner, lord rothermere, entitled: HURRAH FOR THE BLACKSHIRTS, will decry this as a BREXIT BETRAYAL. Yes, trying to mitigate and fix one of the most catastrophic actions a nation has ever done to itself is in their twisted worldview "a betrayal". Their writer d*** littlejohn, who lives in a gated community near mara lago, opined that he was ashamed that Starmer said Britain will not be joining the illegal war in Iran, then added that he wishes trump was in charge of Britain.

Will we get False Flag attacks to bring Europe back to heel, or a historic shift in alliances and power? Or, both?
1
AintnoEend Apr 1, 2026 +1
Why not a Mars attack? Or a black hole? Why speculate?

Why not?
