Started watching Malcolm in the Middle for the first time since I was 12, it’s insane how talented the child actors are

Posted by VoluntaryJetsFan

The fact the kids can hold so much entertaining dialogue by themselves is seriously impressive, even the supporting characters are great. Obviously Frankie Muniz had natural born NASCAR talent that helped him act, but it is honestly amazing now good they all are. I would really struggle to find another show with such predominant child actors that I could put up with for so long. What a show! I tried it again for Brian Cranston, but I forgot how good the entire show was. Edit: Sorry, it appears some tuned in listnook caught me. I’m Bryan Cranston’s PA. This is Big Cranston at work to promote the reboot.

Frankie Muniz had natural born NASCAR talent that helped him act is one of the strangest sentences ever written about child performance.

Yeah, he clearly cultivated those skills from Miracle in Lane 2.

> Miracle in Lane 2. What a throwback lol

Holy shit I haven't thought about that movie in like 20 years

I preferred the original: Miracle In Lane

I think they were maybe just being a little bit silly

Yeah, that sentence made my brain partially melt

It's crazy that I as a 30 year old man, still relate so much to a bunch of kids which speaks a lot about the writing and acting

sixtus_clegane119 Mar 23, 2026 +83
But understand the parents a lot better now!

Alertcircuit Mar 23, 2026 +117
As a kid I thought the mom was a crazy psycho but I've been rewatching the show and in the early seasons she's pretty justified most of the time. It's only in the last couple seasons they flanderize her into being a legit lunatic and even then she's still right the majority of the time.
117
Asclepius-Rod Mar 23, 2026 +39
I’d say they’re all flawed in relatable ways which makes the whole thing work
39
HomersApe Mar 23, 2026 +34
To be fair, Lois does go crazy, but she is also dealing with kids who seem like nightmares. She may be a psycho them, but she was always the one there defending them, as a mother should. And when she needed to be defended, they were there for her... except on the driving thing. Dysfunction inside the family, but an attack from the outside and they form ranks.
34
myassholealt Mar 23, 2026 +17
As as kid I 100% get their embarrassment by her behavior, but as an adult I admire her fine tuned bullshit meter and willingness to call it out no matter the setting or the person.
17
GizMoeGreenberg Mar 23, 2026 +4
I dispute that argument. Lois treated child rearing like fighting a war. She was a distrustful and mean and aggressive toward her kids. No wonder her kids ended up being little shits. She deserved the family she got. She might have been funny but I'm sure glad she wasn't my mother.

jenorama_CA Mar 23, 2026 +5
Lois Common Denominator.
5
justfortheese Mar 23, 2026 +2
It's a tv show, relax.
2
UnknownFiddler Mar 23, 2026 +19
I mean sure but Hal and Lois are still bad parents. And it was extremely irresponsible for them to keep having kids when they already couldn't afford to support the ones they had. I think the real takeaway I have now is they are a realistic portrayal of a struggling parents but not ones anyone should use as a role model.
19
KassellTheArgonian Mar 23, 2026 +17
Tbh one episode says how each kid came about due to different methods, they tried abstinence, rhythm, diaphragm and condom and got a kid from each (I don't believe they said what caused Jaime) So they were trying to not have more after Francis and Reece but just got unlucky with the odds
17
UnknownFiddler Mar 23, 2026 +4
Hal also could have gotten a vasectomy and chose not to which would have solved the problem.
4
sixtus_clegane119 Mar 23, 2026 +1
They weren’t even that poor, it was weird, I heard one theory that they made good money but had to spend it all fixing stuff because of the kids
1
avee10 Mar 23, 2026 +9
I mean if you are 30, that woulda put u right with them as they were growing up. Makes sense.

Digitalizing Mar 23, 2026 +143
It’s genuinely one of the best sitcoms of all time. It doesn’t get nearly enough credit for being one of the shows that made actual lower and lower-middle classes feel seen. I had never seen a family on tv with a house that also had dings on the walls, stains on the carpets, broken appliances that the family have to work around, it was really grounding to see a household that felt lived in and not like it was on the cover of a housekeeping magazine.
143
heidismiles Mar 23, 2026 +61
The dinner plates were usually mismatched. I thought that was such a great detail.
61
KaladinarLighteyes Mar 23, 2026 +19
I loved how they used that in the episode where Francis came home and when they cleans everything up they realized it was too clean.
19
Seaweed-Basic Mar 23, 2026 +14
Roseanne. The Middle.
14
Digitalizing Mar 23, 2026 +31
The Middle came out after Malcolm in the Middle and Roseanne always felt like a great example of why I appreciated Malcolm so much. Roseanne's family was supposed to be broke but the house still looked like a sitcom house.
31
Ink_Smudger Mar 23, 2026 +15
*MitM* was one of the earlier single cam shows, which allowed them more freedom in how the house was set-up. Multi cam shows had to have a pretty standard layout due to needing to be set up in a way where a live audience could watch filming (a model established with *I Love Lucy* and followed for decades).
15
Truethrowawaychest1 Mar 23, 2026 +3
Still Standing, I don't know how popular it was but I liked that show
3
VoluntaryJetsFan Mar 23, 2026 +7
I’ll probably watch The Middle when I’m done with this. The Middle honestly felt like a Malcolm in the Middle remake to me in the best way.
7
anormalgeek Mar 23, 2026 +4
Not a remake, but maybe a "spinoff" of sorts? I know they're not actually connected, but it feels similar in a way.
4
VoluntaryJetsFan Mar 23, 2026 +4
Spin-off is exactly the word I spent a minute trying to figure out before settling on remake. Just completely left my head but you’re completely right.

A rip off? (Not a spin off). I am not saying it is or isn't, just that might be the word this person was actually looking for. Personally, I thought it was fine to make a different show also based on that income family... but I thought using the word Middle in the title was a "rip off".
2
marvelknight28 Mar 23, 2026 +1
Well to be charitable I would say homage is probably most appropriate, I agree that using the word Middle can't help but draw comparisons but they're referring to different things. Honestly I never even felt that the Hecks were similar to Malcom's family beyond the income level, they're both just doing their own takes on what Roseanne started.
1
elanhilation Mar 23, 2026 +8
i always found Roseanne unpleasant compared to Malcolm in the Middle now that i know Roseanne herself is so deeply unlikable i can’t help but think that was the problem, but that just might be confirmation bias talking

The Honeymooners, All in the Family, Sanford and Son, Good Times. Married with Children.
2
7887Throwaway7887 Mar 23, 2026 +2
Was watching an episode last night and there’s a big old spider on the bedroom wall in the back of a scene. Definitely wasn’t intentional, but contributed to the vibe for sure.
2
Flat_News_2000 Mar 23, 2026 +1
It gets a lot of credit actually
1
nikelaos117 Mar 23, 2026 +150
It's rare that every aspect of a show fires on all cylinders. The acting, writing, set design and overall vibe\tone of the show was near perfection. And it stayed pretty steady for the majority of its run. It definitely lagged a bit in the later seasons but I can watch it from beginning to end with no issues. It's a nigh perfect representation of the era it's from and I related to it so much being a middle child with above average intelligence.
150
mrgpsingh1999 Mar 23, 2026 +36
Yeah it never really declined either. Can’t even really think of a bad episode if you ignore the clip shows. Only problem I had with the later seasons was how Malcolm’s friends except for Stevie all disappear and how they handled Francis even if the actor was stepping aside to focus on working behind the scenes
36
Ink_Smudger Mar 23, 2026 +14
I may be misremembering, but it seemed like Malcolm's friends started to get phased out right around the time Dewey was put in the special needs class, which I suppose made sense.
14
Dogbin005 Mar 23, 2026 +1
Shame. Because the Krelboynes were a lot more entertaining than Dewey's classmates.
1
saintash Mar 23, 2026 +5
I figured it had to do with not being regular cast. Its probably a lot easier to cast adults to be semi regulars then it kids. the show grounded for life. Got the news their show was being canceled at the end of the season in the 1st half, Of filming and during the break one of the child cast on the show family just moved to Georgia. And they just didn't have one of their children for the rest of show. If your kid isnt main cast there probably weren't making enough money to justify staying on the hook for the occasional call for the show. And moved away from the LA area.
5
chikanishing Mar 23, 2026 +23
I never liked the Francis storylines as much (though he was good when he was with the family), but otherwise a near perfect show.
23
KaladinarLighteyes Mar 23, 2026 +37
I liked the Francis storylines in military school. Once he hit Alaska they definitely weren’t as good
37
Freyzi Mar 23, 2026 +18
Yeah his Alaska storyline was too damn mean and depressing, got way better with the German Ranch.
18
Logondo Mar 23, 2026 +14
I liked the Ranch stuff but it's sad it never got a proper ending and Francis just got fired off screen. Like okay, they were gunna move on from the Ranch stuff, but did they really have to have him get fired? He was in a pretty good relationship with the owners (last we saw). Just say the owners sold the ranch and he has to find a new job or something more like that.
14
nikelaos117 Mar 23, 2026 +28
Unfortunately the actor who played Otto passed away which led to the pivot in direction for Francis character.
28
Logondo Mar 23, 2026 +11
Oh okay that kinda makes sense why it happened so suddenly. That's sad to hear about his death, but I suppose it's the best way to handle it considering the circumstances. I do believe Francis was always intended to move-on eventually. He's always moving on to new stuff.
11
jenorama_CA Mar 23, 2026 +1
Oh I didn’t know that. He was so funny.
1
nikelaos117 Mar 24, 2026 +2
Rip Also the voice actor for king triton.
2
MintyBBQSauce Mar 23, 2026 +7
Yea that bothered me cause the owners would have literally sold their souls if it would have made Francis happy. They loved him. Then one day “you’re fried for depositing some money into the wrong place”.
7
bros402 Mar 23, 2026 +4
The actor got sick and then died before they could film anything to end the storyline - I think cancer?
4
MintyBBQSauce Mar 23, 2026 +3
Yes he did, I’m just saying I wish they wrote a better way to end that plot point. Didn’t ruin the show or anything. I just absolutely loved Otto as a character so the idea of him ever firing francis annoys me.
3
bros402 Mar 23, 2026 +4
Yeah, Otto was great. They should've done something better than him getting fired. Maybe something like the ranch burning down and Otto and his wife traveling the world with the insurance money and them giving Francis a month of salary or so.
4
lexluthzor Mar 23, 2026 +3
I just got to where Francis emancipates himself. I laughed hard at Spengler giving Francis a saber and Francis accidentally slicing Spengler's other hand off. Then the truck driver giving Francis a ride being the guy that played Jerry in Parks & Rec.
3
nikelaos117 Mar 24, 2026 +1
I feel like this is a perfect encapsulation of the show. The characters are too damn young and naive to learn the life lessons the first time around. Which is extremely realistic and human. An adult giving someone a second chance and having it backfire on them spectacularly is too real.
1
HomersApe Mar 23, 2026 +13
I did a rewatch not that long ago, and one thing that surprised me is that the recurring supporting characters that appeared, like Abe (Wheelchair kid's father), didn't actually appear as much as I remember. Over 150 episodes, and some of these guys only have a dozen or so appearances, if that. Testament to how memorable the recurring cast was, and how smoothly the writing let them come in and out.
13
j8sadm632b Mar 23, 2026 +9
I love "Abe (wheelchair kid's father)" instead of "Stevie's dad"
9
Roseking Mar 23, 2026 +6
Cynthia and Jessica are both only in 4 episodes. But because they were spread out a bit, it feels like they were in most of the seasons they appeared in. I was shocked on the rewatch with how little they were there.
6
StrifeTribal Mar 23, 2026 +4
Lloyd's final appearance in season 5 is one of the best supporting character bits. I wish we got a little more of that Lloyd.
4
RiggyTang Mar 23, 2026 +43
Nearly every friend of Malcolm’s was amazing, nearly every friend of Dewey’s was amazing. And the 3 main kids have the best child comedic performances I’ve probably ever seen. Crazy how much chemistry that cast had.
43
TheShadyGuy Mar 23, 2026 +4
When the kids run for student council and he stops taking his medicine and stares at a Strobe light...
4
PumpkinPieIsGreat Mar 23, 2026 +46
One thing i really enjoyed was that the house LOOKED lived in. I tried watching another sitcom and they had twins as well as another child and their living room was immaculate. I also liked that you'd see chores being done. That's the reality. Kids make mess, you keep cleaning and it's still a mess sometimes. 😆 I like the dynamics of the family, too. It's just so much more realistic than other shows in that regard. The kids did a good job. "Big Cranston" in the edit made me guffaw. ☠️I noticed you spelled it Brian and later Bryan. Why must you continue to try and deceive Reddit?! Everyone knows misspelling Bryan was part of your ploy!
46
DullBlade0 Mar 23, 2026 +17
Like the cold open in which Lois finds a spot of spilled juice on the carpet and spends like an hour or so cleaning it only to realize that now the cleaned spot looks better than the rest of the carpet and tosses some dirt on it.
17
TimeisaLie Mar 23, 2026 +3
The cold opening where Lois spilled something on the rug, got annoyed at the stain, cleans then realizes the entire carpet is dirty so she just rubs some dirt on it. Kills me every time.
3
mithrilsoft Mar 23, 2026 +11

When my daughter was 16 and looking for shows to watch I kept telling her to watch Malcolm and she kept giving me “ehh”. Then one day I said come on just watch this one episode which was the Burning Man one. She laughed and laughed. Then like a week later she was like”let’s watch Malcolm”! I think she has watched the whole show like three times since.
8
kain459 Mar 23, 2026 +6
I love how so much zany shit happens and underneath the surface are these super deep messages about love, companionship, what its like to accept people's faults and still love them and what it takes to keep a family together.

I'm 25, and used to LOVE that show, I was literally obsessed with it growing up in my early youth. The only episode I remember though is the burning man episode. Haven't rewatched it in years though. I do imagine it holds up incredibly well even by today's standards.

What's it like working with Mr. Cranston? I somehow never saw it when it was airing and hadn't watched it until a few years ago. Even without any nostalgia find it to be an incredible show. The whole cast really makes the show, they did a great job of finding talented kids.
4
SaggyBallz99 Mar 23, 2026 +2
AND NO BACKGROUND LAUGHTER!! That alone made Malcolm and Scrubs worth picking up
2
MidwestTroy92 Mar 23, 2026 +2
Hal is honestly one of the best tv dads ever written. Cranston was doing incredible work way before Breaking Bad. Rewatching as an adult hits different too, you start relating to the parents instead of the kids lol
2
Jack_Hatchet Mar 23, 2026 +2
I’m surprised how good Dewey’s performance and line deliveries are in the later seasons, for a 14-ish year old kid who was cast when he was 8-ish. He pretty much became the intelligent straight man, which is a tall order in comedy
2
thelone_voyager Mar 23, 2026 +1
I also watched it last year, and yea the cast is totally amazing. Especially after watching breaking bad when you see what an incredibly talented guy bryan is.
1
Ckngxcalbr Mar 23, 2026 +1
Such a good show. Reece in boot camp is classic.
1
myassholealt Mar 23, 2026 +1
And then after watching this show, if you immediately jump into another show with child actors, it will be glaring how poorly written many child characters are today. They're all 8 year olds given dialogue for a 30 year old.
1
MsAnnabel Mar 23, 2026 +1
This is absolutely gold of a comedy! My favorite Hal scene is him disco roller skating 🤣 had me in stitches. One of my fav lines of his “hey boys! I got the microwave to work without the door!”
1
Apprehensive_War173 Mar 23, 2026 +1
I had the same reaction rewatching it. The timing from the kids is kind of unreal. It doesn’t even feel like child acting, it just feels natural, which is rare. Dewey especially stood out way more to me as an adult. I feel like I didn’t notice how funny and weirdly subtle his performance was when I was younger. Also, the way they all bounce off each other in those chaotic family scenes still holds up so well.
1
poppopintheattic11 Mar 23, 2026 +1
Has there been any other TV actor who had two long term sort of iconic roles on the opposite end of the spectrum than Brian Cranston?? Ted Danson had multiple long-starring sitcom roles, but all comedies. Maybe Carroll O’Conner with All in the Family and In the Heat of the Night?
1

MrMilesDavis Mar 24, 2026 +1
The quality in writing starts to drop by the end of the 2nd season (banger upon banger up to that point) definitely, but the worst thing that happened to the show was that the actors all got older. Someone like Dewey's character is hilarious because he's 5.  Can't write him that way when he's 12 and then it's just not as funny
1
Logondo Mar 23, 2026
I watched the Burning Man episode while high on mushrooms. It wasn't intentional. Me and my roommates were just in the middle of a MITM binge, and we did shrooms, and that just so happened to be the next episode.

Do you think Malcolm in the Middle is that desperate for advertising that they’re making Reddit posts praising the child actors? Maybe I’ll email the show runners and ask if I can get on their marketing campaign.

Really was a gem of a show. Wasn’t as appreciated at the time. One thing that stands out for the era, is that it’s not afraid to use domestic abuse as a form of comedy (the kids afraid of getting a battering by the mom) everybody hates Chris had this too, that sort of joke isn’t around anymore. The Simpsons even stopped Homer choking Bart.

They were dragged around by the ear, they had their mouths washed out with soap, they were made to kneel against the wall for hours, they were made to do headstands in the trash bins, Reese got kicked out of the house and made to sleep in the yard. Maybe they weren't literally hit, but I wouldn't call it "always yelling" and "never anything physical."
