This is a rare case I thought the television series was better than the book .

The show centering the entire emotional foundation of the story on Kirsten and Jeevan's connection was genius. In the book they're just strangers who meet for one moment and then go their separate ways. Crazy to think how different the two properties are.

I read the book because of the show and the show was better because of the Jeevan and Kirsten story but how he ended up with her is a bit odd.

The book was kinda corny because it had to bring that kid and his mom back around to the story and relate them all. Too much of a coincidence. The show had better relationships

Their life in the apartment was my favorite part of the show

Same. I actually own the sofa they used as a prop from this apartment!

The camera panning to Kirsten bopping and then pulling a reluctant Jeevan into it was so heartwarming. The three of them in the apartment was the best part of the show. I'm still not sure if the rest of it is good or not. It's so pretentious and there are a lot of beats that don't really make sense but it's also one of the most beautiful and heartfelt shows I've ever seen. Worth watching and finishing even if you have to roll your eyes at some of it. Gorgeous visuals and even more gorgeous music. Sample of the music by Dan Romer: https://youtu.be/Xod1ucK0ZtM?si=O4FctWnofTYin46U

>The camera panning to Kirsten bopping and then pulling a reluctant Jeevan into it was so heartwarming. The three of them in the apartment was the best part of the show. It's such a joyful scene of them rediscovering how to be human and joyful and fun, after enduring everything that has gone on. You think they're about to crack, and *they probably are about to*. And then this happens. It's such a good scene. I don't think it would carry much weight to people who haven't watched the show, it's kind of a weird one to highlight out of context on Reddit, but within the show it's one of the best scenes.

Frank was the lynchpin that got them through the worst part of it. Jeevan shut down and Kirsten was a kid who'd just lost both her parents. It was Frank who reached out to Kirsten and bonded with her while grounding Jeevan at the same time. No wonder the two of them ended up fracturing once they had to leave Frank.

SO PRETENTIOUS

dogsonbubnutt Mar 24, 2026 +3
it is. a lot of characters are earnest in a very knowing kind of way, like when someone is condescendingly self assured about shit that doesn't matter at all. _"did you know... that dandelions... can be used to make tea?"_ "uh no i guess not" _"hah! of course you didn't. there is so much for you to learn, my dear"_ "huh. like what" _"oh, you shall see. **in time"**_

Shaymuswrites Mar 24, 2026 +4
Your example is more condescending, not pretentious, imo. And I don't think the show is ever condescending. It's incredibly sensitive and human, and interested in exploring how trauma shapes both individuals and societies (even ones as small as three people). I never felt like it was talking down to me as a viewer, though, or trying to prove its smarter than I am.

dogsonbubnutt Mar 24, 2026 +1
> like when someone is condescendingly self assured about shit that doesn't matter at all that's really what im getting at. characters say a lot of portentous stuff about whatever's going on and it often comes across as self important and smug. and i say this as someone who generally likes the show! but by far the best part of it is the central relationship, because that's the part that feels authentic instead of performative.

Best scene of the show. I cheer everytime I watch him throw that book.

11/10 show. Just perfection from start to finish. Pretty sure I cried 10% of my bodyweight during my viewing of this.

Such a great final episode too

The moment >!J and K reunite at the airport!< — such a beautiful scene. And you can see the weight they've been carrying, which we as viewers now know the full heft of, drop away as >!they embrace!<. It's so stunning and so moving.

This series is so so unbelievably good. I avoided it for a while because I wanted to avoid anything Covid coded but I am so glad I changed my mind. Tragic that it didn’t get more attention.

I love this show, all the actors kill it and I hope to see Nabhaan Rizwan in more things (damn you netflix for cancelling Kaos!)

Finally someone else who appreciated KAOS. Absolutely loved it (and I mean, who doesn't love Goldblume chewing the scenery in a track suit).

Geez didn't realize this actor's name and realized i've actually seen his older brother in Taskmaster.

I need to give this show a go again.

Spoiler: when I watched the show when it first aired, I got really choked up when Kirsten sees Jeevan again after years … I watched it again last December and it hit me all over again.

I'm going through a divorce with the love of my life and I'm trying to make sense of the loss and grief. I came back to this show for a sixth time last month and I feel less alone in my pain and yearning. It's such a special show.

So random I literally finished this last night! Probably the best scene in the whole show, the way it builds from "oh god what's going on with frank" to "frank is gonna spit fire right now and warm everybody up" is so damn good

This show doesn’t get the love it deserves

Too bad. This show keeps popping up on my feeds and looks interesting. :(

Okay I'm seeing a lot of love for this show lately. Here was my deal with it: I really liked how they changed Kirsten and Jeevan to have been much closer, I found that interesting. I loved seeing the caravan brought to life and I loved their performances. But I really, really hated how they initially adapated the airport storyline (episode 5), which was by far my favorite part of the book. I haven't watched another episode since. Someone convince me to go back and finish it.

The resolution to the airport stuff is one of the most satisfying season wrap up’s I’ve ever seen.
10
GaryQueenofScots Mar 24, 2026 +3
I agree. In my humble opinion the series resolution is superior to the book.

The wrap is one of my favourite show conclusions ever. So worth it.

Now I want to go reread the book. I remembering loving that part of the book.  I recommend finishing. It's lovely.

Shaymuswrites Mar 24, 2026 +3
OK, there are two episodes in the back half of the series that are genuinely among the best of TV. And the other three are really close to that level. They are entirely new and not from the book, so don't go in expecting a 1:1 representation. But they represent the best of what the show is trying to examine: What do you carry with you from "before," and what does it mean for yourself going forward? What do you do with all the things you've gone through — whether it's embarrassment, shame, fear, uncertainty, betrayal, guilt — and, just as importantly, what are they still doing to you? How do you confront those and how does it sharpen what is important to you? The entire back half of the series is deeply moving and so *human* in a way that is genuinely beautiful.

I watched the show because of the book and was initially a little put off by the airport. But it really is fantastic. Both the book and the TV series are magical in their own way. Totally watch it for its own worth and it is worth it. Also wanted to add that I'm a huge fan of Mackenzie Davis from Halt and Catch Fire.

Best scene in the show

The book was excellent, I should give the series a try
2
HypoManicCrimeSpree Mar 24, 2026 +2
The series is actually better imho. I read the book because of the series and wish the book was a bit more like the series.

Can someone pitch me on Station Eleven?

It’s f****** great. There’s a scene late in the season set to Bill Callahan’s “One Fine Morning” that is one of the most moving things I’ve ever seen on film.

Shaymuswrites Mar 24, 2026 +2
Um, a fragmented society in a post-pandemic world, and you follow various characters in both the "present" and "before." It is not a plot-forward show. It is mostly interested in what people carry with them from their prior experiences, how trauma shapes choices, what art means to people (individually and collectively) and the joy of human connection (particularly when going through something difficult). There is plot. Things happen, there are mysteries that get revealed as the show progresses, and connective story tissue all the way through. But all of that is in service of exploring characters' emotional arcs. I think the first few episodes are generally good, the fourth I have some problems with — but the entire back half of the season is top-tier TV. There are things paying off that you didn't even realize they were setting up during those initial episodes, and it gives the whole thing a richness and emotional depth that is really moving.
