Woww to think there are executives paid stupid wages to make such brain dead decisions why release one single episode half a year before the next batch of episodes

Was this always the plan? Put out a single episode and then nothing for 6 months? Makes no sense. People aren’t going to get hooked after one episode, and by the time it’s autumn there will be far less interest.

No. There was a big pushback for them to release it weekly. It definitely wasnt always the plan

olivebars Apr 6, 2026 +10
Those 2 things aren’t exclusive, it could definitely still be the plan even if there’s community pushback.

Oh I know

You said “no” as in it wasn’t always there plan. What are you basing that off of then, did they say that somewhere? Seems like it was always their plan

Netflix Chile accidentally said in their account that it was going to be weekly (days before ep 1 released), they later deleted it because it wasn't supposed to be revealed back then ig

The put out an episode and the rest not for awhile alone isn't that bad. This happens a bunch more with early showings at conventions a lot and even some with general public but there have been other times this has been done with an early pilot (though 6 months is on the high end). The more baffling part is that they posted it as if it is "released" with nothing along with it about when the rest for weeks later.

Fate strange/fake did something similar.

AccountDeletedByMod Apr 6, 2026 +4
I think they did that with part 5. However, I believe, that part 5 was a sneak peek in theaters first.

What the hell happened to get such a wonky schedule?

sgregory07 Apr 6, 2026 +2
Trust me, this is actually better than Netflix’s original plan: to release it in batches corresponding to each stage of the race in the manga.
2
bloodyturtle Apr 6, 2026 +8
This isn’t true because some stages are random mooks of the week with one episode worth of content and other stages are almost half the manga.

You can't be serious

When SBR ep1 was scheduled to release Netflix labeled it as “1st Stage” rather than just SBR. Then they went silent for a week after the episode ran. In this period an interview of the director indicated that Netflix did not tell them anything about the release schedule. So evidence largely pointed to that they planned to release in batches again corresponding with the stages, but held back from making any further announcements over backlash. And considering why the hell ep1 was released so early compared to the “planned” weekly episodes it makes a lot more sense that they were going for stage batches. “1st Stage”: https://x.com/NetflixAnime/status/2034283686393155846?s=20 Director interview: https://anitrendz.net/news/2026/03/20/steel-ball-run-jojos-bizarre-adventure-director-yasuhiro-kimura-talks-how-he-rode-a-horse-for-research/

Do we have any confirmation that there won't be a gap between each stage?

Long-Skill4284 Apr 6, 2026 +23
I'm sure someone can make a lesson 5 jojoke here but it's just extremely bizarre to premiere what's basically two episodes of the season to then release the next literal months later. There's a bunch of stages in SBR. Even if I give the benefit of the doubt that this is for the production team to make necessary improvements and whatnot, I don't understand why they couldn't wait until there are enough episodes to make a consistent schedule. Surely I'm missing something.

A bunch of anime have been doing the two episode preview special lately. Jjk had one stuck on the end of a recap movie.

dabocx Apr 6, 2026 +3
Fate Strange fake had a 2 year gap between its episode 0 to episode 1. Granted it was worth it in the end It was actually 1 1/2 years between episode 0 and 1 and then another year between 1 and 2. After that it was normal weekly.

zappy487 Apr 6, 2026 +2
I thought FAKE started out as a fan made thing that was made legit?
2
dabocx Apr 6, 2026 +5
No it Whispers of Dawn was the episode 0 and was official
5
EmperorAcinonyx Apr 6, 2026 +2
it was originally an official april fools joke for 2008 until they released an actual light novel the following year
2
Gamerguy230 Apr 6, 2026 +1
But didn’t the next season come out like 2-3 months later? And you could only at time see it in theaters?
1
blacked_out_blur Apr 6, 2026
So did Demon Slayer with the Hashira Training arc movie.

XiaoRCT Apr 6, 2026 +5
Weren't those made as actual movies tho? Not as the first episode of the season being released as the first episode of the season and then going ''oh wait you thought there was a season?''
5
fjposter22 Apr 6, 2026 +45
What a joke.

I genuinely don’t know what the ppl behind the production on part 6 and on this were thinking. I get making dumb decisions like this if it’s a fairly small time IP but JoJo is huge in its niche. First episode was fantastic too, it’s not like they’re putting out slop. I think there was probably some kind of pressure behind the scenes to put this out sooner that we’re not seeing, which is such a shame - I loved the manga and would love to be able to chat about this weekly. Now it’s wait till fall and then god only knows how long.

chromeshiel Apr 6, 2026 +10
Could it be a rights issue? The schedule is so outlandish, I don't see any other explanation than them having to release anything to not miss the deadline.

ThomasVivaldi Apr 6, 2026 -1
The article says it is reflective of the production committee's wishes. Do you want it to look like One Punch Man's latest season?
-1
RecommendsMalazan Apr 6, 2026 +22
If that were the case then I think not releasing this first episode would have been the better option
22
ThomasVivaldi Apr 6, 2026 -15
Why? It clearly demonstrated that there was an audience desire for this that justifies the time and investment to make more.
-15
dabocx Apr 6, 2026 +24
Its Jojo, was there ever any question as to if there was enough desire? This isn't a niche manga no one has heard of.
24
ThomasVivaldi Apr 6, 2026 -11
Sure, but that doesn't mean it'll translate well to a anime viewership. Especially after Stone Ocean's ending had a huge sense of finality to it.

DistortedAudio Apr 6, 2026 +4
They already had a deal in place though. It’s not like these episodes resulted in a full season order or something. I doubt it’ll lead to more funding.
4
RecommendsMalazan Apr 6, 2026 +5
To avoid this situation, where an episode drops then people get annoyed at having to wait 6 months for more.
5
vadergeek Apr 6, 2026 +2
They've already made 191 episodes, is there any reason to need that?
2
Affectionate_Owl_619 Apr 7, 2026 +1
> Do you want it to look like One Punch Man's latest season? The plan was always to release each Stage separately. The question was just whether they were going to be released weekly or as one large batch, and that decision wouldn’t have any impact on the production quality of the end product.

Altruistic_Sail6746 Apr 6, 2026 +3
So there'll be breaks between the stages and each stage has a varying number of episodes? What a bizarre release schedule
3
bloodyturtle Apr 6, 2026 +1
No, there are breaks between cours
1
Altruistic_Sail6746 Apr 7, 2026 +1
Why would they say 2nd stage and not the whole anime?
1
bloodyturtle Apr 7, 2026 +1
Because there will be a break until the next cour of 10-13 episodes
1
Altruistic_Sail6746 Apr 7, 2026 +1
I just realized your first reply was repeating what I had already said, what was the point of it
1
Affectionate_Owl_619 Apr 7, 2026 +1
No. They’re releasing it by the Stage, which is how the manga’s plot is separated. Each Stage will probably have a varying number of episodes and isn’t necessarily a full “cour”

What a tease? I must know more about these steel balls.

GodzillaUK Apr 6, 2026 +6
This release schedule makes Gravity Falls look good. It's a joke to give ONE episode then wait half a year for more. Nonsense. If it wasn't finished, just f****** wait to start releases.
6
ALANJOESTAR Apr 6, 2026 +2
this is crazy why not just wait in general?
2
pacoali Apr 6, 2026 +1
Huh? And here I thought the anime had come out.
1
dabocx Apr 6, 2026 +1
They dropped one episode and then went radio silent till now. It was bizzare

The studio had no issues before Netflix and their persistent bullshit.
3

Feels unlikely as David Production never had any release schedule issue until they got on Netflix

queerhistorynerd Apr 6, 2026 +1
another example to add to the pile of why I finally cancelled Netflix

Va1crist Apr 6, 2026 +1
welcome to netflixes bullshit, this is why i hate netflix and there control over anime, they do shit like this.
1
GodzillaUK Apr 6, 2026 +1
It justifies not staying subbed to it, if they're going to break up shows you WANT to watch with months long breaks, they can enjoy months long breaks from sub fees.

Idk why everyone hates batch releases so much, I personally don't think that 18mins of content is very much to wait an entire week for between episodes and it kills my interest. Especially considering that episodes can be filler, or mainly exposition sometimes several episodes in a row where nothing major happens. Nobody else finds it frustrating to wait an entire week to see 18 minutes of not much and then have it happen again for like 3 weeks in row? Whenever people point that out everyone acts like they're super special and big brained by comparison but don't seem to notice that they're just blindly defending the old fashioned release schedule based on conditions that no longer apply. Weekly release schedules encourage bloated stories, wasted time on recaps and low effort cliffhangers. 10 minutes dragging it's heels, half a fight and then roll credits so you have to wait for next week isn't clever and intelligent story telling it's the lowest common denominator of generating continued interest. There's a reason it's the default format for c**** long running kids cartoons and soaps. Audiences got fed up of it in every other genre after streaming made it more obvious and shows that don't rely on that c*** got way more interest. Idk why anime fans are so insistent on weekly release, it doesn't make them as clever as they think it does. If binge watching reveals flaws in the show, then the weekly schedule was just covering for bad writing. I also don't agree that it ruins the hype at all, batch releases get people hyped up for ages before each batch and after. It's shorter bursts of bigger engagement. These people have a vested interest in the IP doing well, they're not gonna just kill it intentionally and they know better than us what the viewership numbers look like. This 1 episode then a 6 month wait is the worst of both worlds. And for the "ugh people like you have no patience and need slop delivered to you in one big chunk because you're stupid" comments that everyone will be cooking up reading this: I read ancient greek epics, 19th century political texts and science textbooks for fun. That doesn't make me better or smarter than anyone else but it does poke a hole in the pretense that reading Japanese comics aimed at teenagers before the cartoon adaptations makes you more big brained.
