> Part of the concern was that anyone attached to the Americanized version of the cult-hit U.K. version of the show would be maligned along with the new series. It makes sense to be wary, The Office was the rare American remake of foreign media that really came into its own after the first season and worked well.

Yep. Paul Rudd was giving sound advice, it just turned out to be wrong in this one instance. Of course, a big part of why it turned out to be wrong was Steve Carell’s performance.

Well actually Season 1 Michael sucked and they smartly realized this and pivoted

Slicked back hair Michael was a REAL piece of shit

I’m glad the writers thought that people can change. Pushed back hair Michael was a much better person.

He USED to be a piece of shit

He definitely would slop up steaks at Truffonis

If the Office came out today, I wonder if it would have been cancelled after its first season. Thats definitely the worst season, especially if you’re only considering the Carrell era. I could see it coming out on Netflix or whatever today and then getting axed immediately because it didn’t have overnight success.

I feel like there's a good chance if it came out sooner it might have been cancelled too. The early 2000s so many shows were cancelled due to the explosion of reality TV, the US office hit I think just at the right time to get a second season

If I recall correctly I think one of the things that saved it was people buying the episodes on iTunes to watch on the new video iPod!

Mysmokingbarrel Mar 25, 2026 +5
I did. I remember having the iPod (color? What was the name of that thing) and sitting with my ex gf and watching it on breaks at school or random places. Such a random but fond memory. Such a tiny little screen to think about now but it was so cool.

To be fair it’s rare for a comedy series to come out of the gate swinging. Parks and Rec, 30 Rock, even Seinfeld didn’t really hit their stride until seasons 2 or 3.

dakilazical_253 Mar 25, 2026 +13
30 Rock was fantastic right out of the gate

alecjperkins213 Mar 25, 2026 +5
This is not his boat!!

TacosAreJustice Mar 25, 2026 +2
I think the only reason parks and rec didnt get cancelled is because of the success of the office.

Season 1 was absolutely not the worst of the Carrell era. That honor belongs to season 7.

Exactly

Ironically, Paul Rudd's parents are British. So *he's* the American remake, too

wutangclanthug9mm Mar 24, 2026 +3
I remember being wary of the American office when it was announced

sailorfaggy Mar 24, 2026 +4
Exactly, they now released the Mexican version of it and I am so glad that it only shares the name because it’s so Mexican and it’s very own thing. The humor is similar but also so different.

The cast of the show like Krasinski have said as much too, they were a bit taken aback that the show was happening cause they thought it'd be impossible to replicate the UK version.

I remember when just the pilot had been aired and i hadn’t watched it yet but IMDb had the show at an abysmally low rating and all the reviews said it was the worst thing they’ve ever seen and not even remotely funny. I was surprised because 40 Year Old Virgin had just come out and I was already a huge fan of Carrell from Anchorman and The Daily Show. Looking back, I’m not even sure anyone had seen it yet because I don’t think the actual show came out till much later, but perhaps diehard UK Office fans were review bombing it just for existing

It helps that the BBC one is pretty shitty, even compared to their other weird slop lol

Man you really hear nothing but bad things about this Paul Rudd guy, huh?

Thatis_SodaPressing Mar 24, 2026 +29
He should really change his name to Paul Rude

the_main_entrance Mar 24, 2026 +19
His career went downhill after Mack and Me

I dunno, I've been hearing good things about his work on Celery Man.

Well I'm glad it worked out the way it did and we got him in the Office. I can't picture anyone else playing Michael Scott.

JGG5 Mar 24, 2026 +21
Bob Odenkirk was also considered for the role (and actually did an episode in one of the later seasons of *The Office* as a sort of mirror-universe Michael Scott). He would have been hilarious (because he’s brilliant in everything he does) but the energy would have been completely different.

Competitive_Help8485 Mar 24, 2026 +13
I stand corrected, Bob Odenkirk would've been an awesome alternative version of Michael Scott.
13
olipoppit Mar 25, 2026 +6
This alteration in the time fabric may have kept him from being Saul Goodman! Careful what you wish for
6
rubensinclair Mar 25, 2026 +6
But imagine Carell doing Goodman! What have we missed out on. Maybe Kimmel can make him do it once.

DoubleDownAgain54 Mar 25, 2026 +3
It’s all good man.

CitizenCue Mar 25, 2026 +2
One of the weird things is that it probably would’ve been closer to the original.
2
scottawhit Mar 25, 2026 +1
Bob Odenkirk, playing it like the insurance adjuster from Bob’s Burgers would have been great.

Tryingagain1979 Mar 24, 2026 +9
The BBC version is so different than the American version. Like night and day.
9
DoubleDownAgain54 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Yes. I was in Canada when it came out and loved it, and I thought for sure the US version came out, and after the first episode where they copied the UK pilot. But it became its own thing, and loved the US version once it found its stride. But bingeing the UK version is much easier, and the final special is one of my favorite episodes of TV ever.

When Dawn comes back to the party ❤️❤️❤️

Dawn & Tim was so much better than Jim and Pam! And loved Jim and Pam!

I still have PTSD from his character. I’m sure Carell is a kind person in real life but I can’t watch anything involving him without my blood pressure rising.

Rooster is good so far

Apparently no one listened, everyone and their mother auditioned

I missed out on getting to meet Paul Rudd once. Still regret it.

StuckInNY Mar 25, 2026 +1
They were not wrong. It’s the most obvious and least funny thing he has done. I’m amazed people like it. It’s almost as boring as actually being in an office.

whydontyousuckmyball Mar 25, 2026 +1
I found Steve Carell’s character hard to watch. Like almost didn’t watch.
