This post title is kind of a rollercoaster. I was like oh no not Steve Guttenberg. I can’t believe he’s fallen so far. Then I was relieved he did something heroic instead then the people hate him for it. What a ride.

He stole a car, broke into their home, and got into a physical altercation with them and kidnapped them. He saved their stubborn little lives.

I did work for the king, until the king’s stinking son fired me, and thank *you* so much for bringing up such a painful memory! While you’re at it, why don’t you give me a nice paper cut and pour lemon juice on it?

RBVegabond Apr 16, 2026 +22
It’s like my grandfather in his last moments fighting the paramedics right after a Mac truck hit him across 4 lanes. Some people just don’t understand they’re being helped or don’t want to be saved.
22
reddithoe555 Apr 16, 2026 +9
This is where my first thought went. I've known several elderly who have said they're just waiting to die...

JFC. I’m so sorry about your gpa!
3
RBVegabond Apr 16, 2026 +4
My mother cried and said he can’t hurt us anymore to her brother, some people improve the world leaving it. No sympathies needed here for that man, friend.
4

Oh wow. My heart. Blessings and peace to your mother and uncle. 💔 Sometimes the darkness is torn away rather than lifted.

I really needed to see him like that too because right before he had an arc in Veronica Mars where he was molester/murderer and Party Down brought me back to liking him lol
5
Musashi_Joe Apr 16, 2026 +5
Oh yeah I forgot he was Woody! It's funny b/c Rob Thomas also made Adam Scott a creep for one episode in that show at some point.
5

Yeah he was a teacher that knocked up Leighton Meester, before Gosip Girl lol. Bunch of same people pop up on iZombie too

He was also a chi-mo in “Flower” which didn’t stick the landing.

7
ReallyBrainDead Apr 16, 2026 +50
Remember he went on one of the local broadcasts covering the fire on site trying to convince people to evacuate. Just being a good member of the community.
50
FullofLovingSpite Apr 16, 2026 +10
He was asking people to leave their keys in their cars, because they were abandoning them and running (a false report about where the fire was combined with a bad community exit route). It blocked the roads for the fire trucks. He was trying to help clear it. It was pretty cool of him. I was watching at the time and thought, that's not THE Steve Guttenberg, is it?
10

That man is a gem.
132
Scuba1588 Apr 16, 2026 +128
The story of how he became famous is hilarious. He hung around the paramount lot entrance and noticed security didn’t actually check anyone’s credentials. He just got a blank card and took it to the time clock punch in and waved at the security guards and acted like he belonged. He found an empty office (he was in this office for 2 or 3 years) and set up a phone line and people started taking his calls. He’d also hang around late and break into other offices to read scripts and treatments. He was caught by Faye Dunaway who realized he didn’t belong there but didn’t rat him out realizing he was just an actor looking for a break and posed no harm.
128
napalmnacey Apr 16, 2026 +53
So Police Academy is a biopic where he does the same thing, just with being a cop instead of being an actor.
53
MuhThugga Apr 16, 2026 +24
Spielberg did a similar thing at Universal where he would duck away from the studio tour and go to an empty office. Eventually, people just assumed he worked there.
24
Finito-1994 Apr 16, 2026 +30
That was debunked. His dad got him a job. All these rich and successful old fucks wanna pretend they have an origin story despite succeeding against no adversity

Yup, Steve was working on CBS shows pretty young.
11
Aguy_incognito Apr 17, 2026 +1
My local paper has a vanity press section. Fell good story about lot boy who worked his way up to manager!(dads dealership) local teen wins tennis title!(daughter of billionaire businessman and state senator) etc….
1
Bubblybathtime Apr 17, 2026 +1
Yeah those "I came to town with only a dollar to my name but I made it big" stories are always suspect. More often than not it turns out they came from a wealthy family with connections.

I remember seeing him on TV being interviewed on the street by a news crew during the aftermath, and he just introduced himself as “Steve”. Seems pretty down to Earth.
55
lostroadrunner22 Apr 16, 2026 +43
‘I’m being told you are an actor?’ Was my favorite part of that.
43
please_and_thankyou Apr 16, 2026 +13
Not during the aftermath, it was the middle of the day! Things are being rebuilt though, the plants are green and lush again, and two of the at least six (if I’m counting right) burned schools have reopened. edit: the burned schools are operating in other locations. Office buildings, the high school was in a Sears for almost a full year, and spaces on other campuses.
13
SpellHausMagic Apr 16, 2026 +13
Yes, he seems kind and humble.
13
Dsarg_92 Apr 16, 2026 +7
I’ve always liked listening to his motivational videos on IG. He seems like a very well grounded person.

lol this lead me to the article about D*** Van Dyke, and I quote: “Van Dyke, who evacuated his home alongside wife, Arlene Silver, said he was struggling to unfurl his fire hose when help arrived. “ Well played, D***.
77

At his age I can just imagine how difficult that would have been! Poor D***.

I live in LA and watched the fires live while it happened. He was on the streets in the Palisades asking people to leave their keys so he could drive their cars off the roads so the firemen could get through. Johnny Cool 🥹♥️

I can't remember what film it was, but he was shaving his face, then he shaved his neck. And I thought that was weird, until he took off his shirt and it looked like he was wearing a sweater. That's what I always think of when I hear of Steve Gutenberg.

11
Neil_Salmon Apr 16, 2026 +11
He posts videos online with really positive messages and life advice. It should feel very artificial and saccharine but, from him, it feels like it comes from an honest place. I'm sad he kind of disappeared from movies - he had a great run in the 80s. I love Short Circuit - some aspects of that movie have aged horribly but, otherwise, it works really well.
11
napalmnacey Apr 16, 2026 +5
Short Circuit, Cocoon 1 & 2, the Police Academy movies, the Three Men films. I enjoyed those a lot when I was a kid and watched them repeatedly (The Police Academy movies were taped off the TV which censored or cut out the rude bits).

The whole “ old people stubbornly believing their house will be spared from natural disaster “ trope is real and not funny . In Altadena , the fault was very much with the guy asleep on the job who didn’t run the emergency alert system , but you had old folks with sparks the size of dinner plates falling on the house next to them not budging because they hadn’t gotten official word yet. I don’t know why it is. We need more people like Steve Gutenberg willing to deal with cranky illogical wrath from someone they save. He’s a mensch. .

Elderly? They probably wanted to go down with the house. It’s tough to set up a whole new life at 85.

And people wonder why the world thinks americans are dumb: The world is on fire, let's just sit here and watch TV. And then you have guttenberg, living in a country known for people refusing to leave their homes and being well within their right to shoot anyone for being on their property....smashes in and attacks them against their will. I get the intent, but his actions were just as reckless
