This post title is kind of a rollercoaster. I was like oh no not Steve Guttenberg. I can’t believe he’s fallen so far. Then I was relieved he did something heroic instead then the people hate him for it. What a ride.

He stole a car, broke into their home, and got into a physical altercation with them and kidnapped them. He saved their stubborn little lives.

It’s like my grandfather in his last moments fighting the paramedics right after a Mac truck hit him across 4 lanes. Some people just don’t understand they’re being helped or don’t want to be saved.

Remember he went on one of the local broadcasts covering the fire on site trying to convince people to evacuate. Just being a good member of the community.
50
FullofLovingSpite 2 days ago +10
He was asking people to leave their keys in their cars, because they were abandoning them and running (a false report about where the fire was combined with a bad community exit route). It blocked the roads for the fire trucks. He was trying to help clear it. It was pretty cool of him. I was watching at the time and thought, that's not THE Steve Guttenberg, is it?

The story of how he became famous is hilarious. He hung around the paramount lot entrance and noticed security didn’t actually check anyone’s credentials. He just got a blank card and took it to the time clock punch in and waved at the security guards and acted like he belonged. He found an empty office (he was in this office for 2 or 3 years) and set up a phone line and people started taking his calls. He’d also hang around late and break into other offices to read scripts and treatments. He was caught by Faye Dunaway who realized he didn’t belong there but didn’t rat him out realizing he was just an actor looking for a break and posed no harm.
128
napalmnacey 3 days ago +53
So Police Academy is a biopic where he does the same thing, just with being a cop instead of being an actor.
53
MuhThugga 3 days ago +24
Spielberg did a similar thing at Universal where he would duck away from the studio tour and go to an empty office. Eventually, people just assumed he worked there.

55
lostroadrunner22 3 days ago +43
‘I’m being told you are an actor?’ Was my favorite part of that.
43
please_and_thankyou 3 days ago +13
Not during the aftermath, it was the middle of the day! Things are being rebuilt though, the plants are green and lush again, and two of the at least six (if I’m counting right) burned schools have reopened. edit: the burned schools are operating in other locations. Office buildings, the high school was in a Sears for almost a full year, and spaces on other campuses.

He posts videos online with really positive messages and life advice. It should feel very artificial and saccharine but, from him, it feels like it comes from an honest place. I'm sad he kind of disappeared from movies - he had a great run in the 80s. I love Short Circuit - some aspects of that movie have aged horribly but, otherwise, it works really well.
11
napalmnacey 3 days ago +5
Short Circuit, Cocoon 1 & 2, the Police Academy movies, the Three Men films. I enjoyed those a lot when I was a kid and watched them repeatedly (The Police Academy movies were taped off the TV which censored or cut out the rude bits).

The whole “ old people stubbornly believing their house will be spared from natural disaster “ trope is real and not funny . In Altadena , the fault was very much with the guy asleep on the job who didn’t run the emergency alert system , but you had old folks with sparks the size of dinner plates falling on the house next to them not budging because they hadn’t gotten official word yet. I don’t know why it is. We need more people like Steve Gutenberg willing to deal with cranky illogical wrath from someone they save. He’s a mensch. .

And people wonder why the world thinks americans are dumb: The world is on fire, let's just sit here and watch TV. And then you have guttenberg, living in a country known for people refusing to leave their homes and being well within their right to shoot anyone for being on their property....smashes in and attacks them against their will. I get the intent, but his actions were just as reckless
