I think that's because film critics at Cannes probably will think it's just okay, and he'd rather just wait for a full theatrical release to get a bigger opening weekend. Spielberg is also a big enough name that he doesn't need any buzz from Cannes, so it could only hurt the film if it gets bad WoM.

A Spielberg alien movie will definitely have me at the theaters.
270
nowhereman136 Mar 25, 2026 +45
Spielberg's name is usually enough to get me in theaters anyway. I think the last one of his I didn't rush to see was BFG like 10 years ago
45
Tandy2000 Mar 25, 2026 +26
He really lost me in the 2010s as most of his output was either meh or I just didn't enjoy it much. Indy 4 didn't help either. He won me back with West Side Story/The Fabelmans, though, so I am excited about a new alien film from Spielberg. And to be fair, most of his 2010s work was the kind of thing where even before seeing it I had a feeling I wasn't going to love it.
26
CrimsonDessert Mar 25, 2026 +11
West Side Story was fantastic, but I don't think anyone wanted a "Hey, America is pretty great despite its flaws" film during COVID which definitely worked against it.
11
wildwalrusaur Mar 25, 2026 +5
I think it was the miscasting of Tony, personally
5
Yukie_Cool Mar 26, 2026 +1
Yeah, it definitely felt like a studio mandate to cast a “star” to get butts in seats when I think Spielberg’s name would have been enough. It really sucks cuz I think casting an unknown would have really fit the kind of character Tony is in the play: ready for a fresh start.
1
Yukie_Cool Mar 26, 2026 +1
Is that what you got from that movie? Because that’s not what I got at all. If anything, it’s more true to the original themes behind Romeo and Juliet (cycles of violence and corruption destroying innocence, the youth trying to rebel against a world that is cruel to them, etc) than most modern adaptations are.
1
NightFire19 Mar 25, 2026 +3
> West Side Story/The Fabelmans both of these films feature career defining shots
3
nowhereman136 Mar 25, 2026 +1
Idk if this is an unpopular opinion, but I enjoyed The Post way more than Munich or Bridge of Spies
1
MikeArrow Mar 26, 2026 +1
If you told teenage Mike that he'd eventually stop watching Spielberg movies in theatres, he'd have thought you were crazy. The last one I saw was Bridge of Spies and it promptly put me to sleep.
1
dawgz525 Mar 25, 2026 +31
And you're not alone in that, which is why he doesn't need Cannes film festival buzz.
31
Iwoulddiefcftbatk Mar 25, 2026 +7
It’s a Spielberg and John Williams scored alien movie, this is something that I will be seeing in theaters.
7
jjdlg Mar 25, 2026 +2
Was there even any music in the trailer? I don't remember it (granted I've seen it like 2 times) but a John Williams melody usually hits iconic, like hard, sticking the landing.
2
NightFire19 Mar 25, 2026 +3
Williams usually doesn't score trailers/marketing doesn't use his score for it.
3
frockinbrock Mar 25, 2026 +2
Maybe it's a back door sequel to Indiana Jones 4
2
grain_delay Mar 25, 2026 +1
inb4 it’s not an alien movie at all
1
recoupled Mar 26, 2026 +1
Has he done one since War of the Worlds? That movie was amazing.
1
ERASER345 Mar 25, 2026 +121
That trailer looked pretty rough so I'm leading toward worry of negative reception as well
121
onmywheels Mar 25, 2026 +80
Yeah, the animals just looked...bad, and the scene of the little girl walking toward the house with the animals looked like one of those AI slop videos (not saying they used AI, just that visually it had that aesthetic).
80
riegspsych325 Mar 25, 2026 +54
Janusz Kaminsky’s lighting has just gotten far too dreamy and overexposed. Spielberg has been using him for damn near everything these past 25 years and it’s led to them both getting in a stylistic rut It drives me nuts, even the video game world in Ready Player One looked like it was running a Minority Report texture/lighting pack
54
Shittalking_mushroom Mar 25, 2026 +13
totally agree, better put than I could have.
13
riegspsych325 Mar 25, 2026 +24
Edgar Wright was on Andy Richter’s podcast and when finding out Richter went to film school alongside Kaminsky, Wright asked “was he always bathed in milky white lighting?” The guy is obsessed with putting hard lighting on everyone and everything while turning up the exposure a bit higher than needed It just makes everything look like it was shot on a clear sky afternoon but in the late fall: bright, pale, and cold
24
ManceRaider Mar 25, 2026 +4
Almost 35 years, basically the entire back 2/3 of his career
4
NightFire19 Mar 25, 2026 +3
Hey man, I actually liked the Minority Report lighting
3
riegspsych325 Mar 25, 2026 +1
and it did work for that movie as well as Schindler‘s List and Saving Private Ryan. But they are just going overboard with it, the entire Oasis in RP1 looks like they filmed it specifically during fall afternoons with how pale and cold everything comes off
1
ZippidieDooDah Mar 25, 2026 +21
Kamiński loves that washed out, bleeding whites, almost hazy dream like image. Veers into uncanny on the regular
21
Shittalking_mushroom Mar 25, 2026 +18
ya, as incredible as Saving Private Private Ryan and Schindler’s List look (he won oscars for both) I feel like everything else he’s done with Spielberg has taken away from the film (I’ll make an exception for Minority Report). Spielberg’s older films (Jurassic Park and before) had great color and more natural lighting. But with Kaminski he’s let everything look washed out with an over abundance of white light in too may shots, which is Spielberg’s kind of visual signature I guess, but it’s over indulgent. His films feels so cold and samey in the second half of his career as a result.
18
yesthatstrueorisit Mar 26, 2026 +1
I think Lost World actually looks brilliant, but yeah Kaminski has sort of gone overboard now. Everything looks like it was shot on a green screen and the mix of constantly blowing things out with hard lighting on the subjects just doesn't look good.
1
KazaamFan Mar 25, 2026 +10
Yea and that’s the climax of the trailer. A girl and cgi animals walking towards a lit up house, pretty meh for a summer blockbuster movie trailer.
10
thehinduprince Mar 25, 2026 +8
If I were to guess, those scenes specially are flashbacks for Emily Blunt’s character and those animals are actually aliens, but her memory was altered to remember them as animals. Which could explain why the visual language of those scene’s have an odd sheen to them.
8
AutomaticPython Mar 25, 2026 +3
Its most likely a dream sequence. The little girl is also the character played by Emily Blunt so I wouldn't worry.
3
Amy_Macadamia Mar 25, 2026 +1
It looked like Disney's live action Snow White
1
Hufflepuffpassmethej Mar 25, 2026 +33
NGL I was kind expecting something different than what was shown. Take away the shot of the alien vessel coming in through the clouds at the end and you wouldn’t even be able to tell that it has to do with aliens, seems to be way more focused on this spatial-mind-projection aspect but we shall see!
33
bsEEmsCE Mar 25, 2026 +17
i hope the alien vessel isnt a projected vision in people's minds fakeout...
17
hbic Mar 25, 2026 +2
Fr. That would be so boring
2
KazaamFan Mar 25, 2026 +6
Yea how do you not even make an exciting trailer, bad sign. Bad movies sometimes get great trailers before they are released.
6
Kristophigus Mar 25, 2026 +2
The people who make the trailers are often completely separate from the director or any film crew. It's marketing video editors, usually. 95% chance Spielberg had nothing to do with the trailer.
2
TheUmbrellaMan1 Mar 25, 2026 +7
For a guy who was a pioneer of visual effects in the 90s, the visual effects in the new trailer sure looked mid.
7
dawgz525 Mar 25, 2026 +8
personally, I think the trailer looked pretty mid. I am expecting a pretty average and formulaic alien movie that's got a bit of Spielberg heart. However, the buzz seems undeniable amongst casual audiences. I know a ton of people hyped for this, personally. I know it will open to big numbers on the first weekend. That doesn't mean it will be good or bad. However, I do think they're being safe with the promotion of this one, because they can afford to do so.
8
KingMario05 Mar 25, 2026 +26
Imagine if it comes out at a 90% RT lol
26
bluehawk232 Mar 25, 2026 +5
Yeah he'd get a 1 min standing ovation for it which is how cannes throws shade
5
Booster_Tutor Mar 25, 2026 +4
Yeah. They learned their lesson with the last Indy movie. Premiering their big budget movie to middling reviews 3 month before its release. Totally unnecessary and killed a lot of hype for it.
4
frenchchelseafan Mar 25, 2026
I mean if a movie is good then it’s good lol. They’re not gonna trick people by not putting the movie in cannes
0
KazaamFan Mar 25, 2026 +3
The trailers are just looking ok so far.
3
thehinduprince Mar 25, 2026 +5
People always say this. They said this about OBAA skipping festivals too. That reviews will be middling and could affect its box office. Sometimes, a festival release is just not a part of a film’s distribution strategy.
5
PsychologicalEbb3140 Mar 25, 2026 +6
I’m definitely checking it out but Spielberg is certainly not the filmmaker he was 30 years ago.
6
LittleBaseball4896 Mar 25, 2026 +4
He still delivered some good movies: Minority Report, Catch Me if You Can, The Terminal, Munich, Lincoln, Bridge of Spies, The Post, West Side Story, The Fabelmans...
4
PsychologicalEbb3140 Mar 25, 2026 +3
Not saying he can’t turn in good films every now and then. But he can miss and even when he turns in something good, he doesn’t hit as hard as used too, at least in my opinion.
3
LittleBaseball4896 Mar 25, 2026 +2
I agree with you, and it doesn't help my expectations for the new film that his War of the Worlds remake was one of his worst.
2
tulkunking Mar 25, 2026 +2
I'd rank west side story and the fabelmans among the best of his work
2
No_Guitar7903 Mar 26, 2026 +1
Spielberg hasn’t had a box office hit since the pandemic. West Side Story and The Fabelmans both flopped. He’s a has been and not a draw anymore.
1
wazzupnerds Mar 25, 2026 -9
I remember when Dial of Destiny reviews dropped from there and everyone acted like it was a huge piece of shit when it was actually an amazing movie that closed out Harrison’s time with the character beautifully. I hate to use the word pretentious but that word needs to get thrown around more often at critics.
-9
Admiralattackbar Mar 25, 2026 +9
Beautifully?!?
9
LPMadness Mar 25, 2026 +11
I finally watched the Dial of Destiny and I found it to be a solid Indy flick. I was expecting something worse than Crystal Skull, but it wasn’t. I still feel the lack of Spielberg was sorely missed though.
11
Previous_Spinach_168 Mar 25, 2026
DoD is worse than KotCS, I’ll say it. At least *Crystal Skull* had the benefit of being directed by Spielberg and had an excellent first act. *Dial* was just sad to watch.
0
Hayterfan Mar 25, 2026 +77
So it won't have a 17½ days long standing ovation?
77
R_W0bz Mar 26, 2026 +1
With awkward camera pans
1
Bunraku_Master_2021 Mar 26, 2026 +1
Shots of the Director and actors getting teary eyed for their film and then pans to someone famous clapping in the audience.

3
Resaren Mar 25, 2026 +41
I’m worried… love a good Spielberg Sci-Fi, but the trailer looks rough.
41
Android1822 Mar 25, 2026 +11
I am shocked that this is a spielberg movie, the trailer looked so generic, forgettable and honestly amateurish with how bad the CGI was in parts of it. If it did not have his name attached, I doubt anybody would pay attention to it at all.
11
R_W0bz Mar 26, 2026 +1
He’s had an over reliance on CGI since the 4th Indy movie, Lucas was criticised for being extreme with blue screen but Spielberg has been equally lazy with it at times but seems to escape criticism.
1
Milesware Mar 26, 2026 +1
How did the Ready Player One trailer look
1
inthebenefitofmrkite Mar 26, 2026 +1
The trailer about the newsperson starting to talk differently and everyone jumps to the conclusion it must be aliens… I’d have thought she was having a stroke.
1
AgentSkidMarks Mar 25, 2026 +207
Is the whole movie gonna be Emily Blunt making that face? Because so far all of the promo materials make this movie look like it's just Emily Blunt going "uuuuuuuugggghhghghghggh"
207
NorthSouthWhatever Mar 25, 2026 +73
She's speaking BeatBox Alien from MiB 2.
73
AgentSkidMarks Mar 25, 2026 +32
Emily Blunt wishes she was as cool as Biz Markie
32
YagottawantitRock Mar 25, 2026 +20
Well that seems pretty reasonable. I wish I was as cool as Biz Markie, as well.
20
foghillgal Mar 25, 2026 +8
Ted Lasso rapping Biz is the only thing that comes close.
8
Phyliinx Mar 25, 2026 +8
I mean, it's in her surname.
8
IMO4444 Mar 25, 2026 +48
She has a limited range of expressions because of excessive botox so yep, thats prob the face you’ll get all movie.
48
champion_dave Mar 25, 2026 +17
It’s really sad. And it’s clear that there’s massive pressure on actresses to get this work done, or else they wouldn’t. Blunt, Stone, and more are all phenomenal actresses that are slowly rendering their faces unable to express emotion. They won’t be able to win an Oscar in their 70s like Amy Madigan who has aged naturally and wonderfully.
17
FrameworkisDigimon Mar 25, 2026 +4
I don't get where this pressure comes from. The closest you get to people defending it is people saying stuff "their body, their decision", which isn't supporting the work, just criticising people who criticise it. No-one likes this work. No-one has ever liked this work. Are some actresses just getting bad work while trying to get the good work that no-one notices? Is there some Hollywood group chat where they're all group thinking themselves into thinking they look good?
4
Clawless Mar 26, 2026 +5
I mean, it’s pretty simple. They want the option to still get the same roles they got when they were younger. They don’t want to have to only go for older characters (and keep in mind, I’m not saying elderly characters. Just older than they were.) That’s all there is to it. Chasing youth, through whatever means they are convinced by very convincing people. When you have a lot of disposable income, those convincing people are everywhere.
5
Cabbage_Corp_ Mar 25, 2026 +22
Yeah, she really fucked up her face. This is going to be hard to watch
22
polyploid_coded Mar 25, 2026 +20
It feels like they watched one viral clip of a TV news reporter jumbling their words and fainting, and tried to build a movie around it
20
MartyBellvue Mar 25, 2026 +3
It's the only face she can make!
3

2026 Spielberg face.
1
mihirmusprime Mar 25, 2026
Reddit when marketing show too much: "THEY SHOULD STOP SHOWING SO MUCH, ITS SPOILING THE MOVIE" Reddit when the marketing is limited like they asked: >Is the whole movie gonna be Emily Blunt making that face? Because so far all of the promo materials make this movie look like it's just Emily Blunt going "uuuuuuuugggghhghghghggh"
0
AgentSkidMarks Mar 25, 2026 +8

-1
Antique-Dentist-2404 Mar 25, 2026 +108
I can't get over all the distractingly bad CGI animals in the trailer
108
mediciii Mar 25, 2026 +28
And even beyond that, I feel like the cinematography, colour grading and overall look of the images is way below Spielberg/Kamiński’s skill level. Kinda just looks like any sci fi movie from the 2010s. Which is sad because I think West Side Story and Fabelman’s are two of the better looking movies of the decade so far.
28
riegspsych325 Mar 25, 2026 +13
Spielberg needs to change things up with another cinematographer
13
ParamedicSea5779 Mar 26, 2026 +5
Yes but no way he would at this point. Had Dean Cundey stayed and been available for lost world they would've stayed together.
5
One-Feedback678 Mar 25, 2026 +1
Yeah the whole look screams mediocre 2010s movie. Just looks washed out and boring.
1
the-planet-earth Mar 25, 2026 +32
Yeah I don't get the whole polar Express animation angle at all
32
piscano Mar 25, 2026 +3
Prob those are not the finals. VFX are sometimes forced to make “promo” versions of shots so that marketing can get an early trailer out.
3
OgreMcGee Mar 25, 2026 +5
Ngl it kinda looks mid to bad across the board. Im afraid that it will have maybe 2 sequences with a spielberg spark and the rest is direct to streaming forgettable.
5
MomsAgainstPenguins Mar 25, 2026 +2
One day we will all appreciate bad cgi because it'll be the only way we can tell it isn't ai.
2
Piggstein Mar 25, 2026 +5
That’s no way to talk about Emily Blunt
5
CrabNebula420 Mar 25, 2026 +1
it felt like The Golden Compass movie from years ago.  I'm still super stoked to go see the movie even if it felt a bit off cgi wise

Emily looks like an alien in this movie

The only terrible predator movie is The Predator. I've enjoyed everything else, but I do still need to see Killer of Killers.
6
AfterShave997 Mar 26, 2026 +1
Yeah that's the one
1
kizmitraindeer Mar 25, 2026 +46
The trailer for this looks so visually bad, I can see why they wouldn’t want to embarrass themselves if the full movie looks like that.
46
Henson_Disney48 Mar 25, 2026 -6
I am tired of these movies that hint "Oh this \[plot device\] will change the world if it get's out" and leave you wondering what the device is the entire trailer/movie. Just tell me, if it cool I'll get into it, but I'm not going to spend money to see a film where I am not even sure what the hell is happening because Spielberg is trying to be super mysterious. It's 2026, give me a reason to see your film.
-6
the_racecar Mar 25, 2026 +13
I completely disagree personally. I hate how much modern trailers give away. I want to be surprised at the movies. The promos have made it abundantly clear it’s about aliens coming to earth. Why would I want more than that to be revealed?
13
SutterCane Mar 25, 2026 +1
Can’t believe Spielberg decided to rip off *the Event* from NBC.
1
ChalupaBatmanMc01 Mar 25, 2026
> The trailer for this looks so visually bad Which is surprising sentence since Janusz Kamiński usually outdoes himself.
0

He’s going for a big reveal and not a trickle buzz
14
KevinAitken1960 Mar 25, 2026 +4
Exactly. That’s exactly why it was never going to go to Cannes. June 12th is Disclosure Day. That’s all.
4
TraditionalMood277 Mar 25, 2026 +37
Oh ...it's that bad, huh?
37
zuuzuu Mar 25, 2026 +11
This is a sci-fi summer blockbuster type of flick. Doesn't really need to chase awards buzz at festivals. It's just not that kind of movie. Not every movie needs to make the festival rounds.
11
TraditionalMood277 Mar 25, 2026 -1
I think he meant to, but then decided not to. Meaning, at some point, he felt it was worthy. Then he realized it was bad and is now pivoting to what you're saying.
-1
Equal-Temporary-1326 Mar 25, 2026 +9
I mean, it is Spielberg still. Maybe it won't be an all-time classic. But I'm sure it'll almost certainly be worth seeing at least.
9
TraditionalMood277 Mar 25, 2026 +6
You didn't watch Ready Player One did you?
6
Mindless_Stuff9179 Mar 25, 2026 +8

Perhaps, but the movie was bad. Real bad. So bad that it WASN'T good. Just plain bad.
-1
Orange_Tang Mar 25, 2026 +1
I think you're overreaching here. It was pure dumb Hollywood blockbuster but it's objectively not that bad. It wasn't good, but it's not that bad.
1
TraditionalMood277 Mar 25, 2026
It truly was, though. Not even a reach. Go ahead and rewatch it and pretend it was directed by a nobody. Judge it for what it is, not for his past work.

1
Icowanda Mar 25, 2026 +13
Not surprising. I hope I’m wrong, but so far the trailers feel like it’s trying very hard. Shyamalan did it years ago with Signs.
13
ZorroMeansFox Mar 25, 2026 +11
When I saw the new Trailer for this film a few weeks ago as it played on SNL, my first thought was that we hadn't cut away to a commercial, and that I might have been watching one of the show's parodies, as the way the promo was edited seemed so overwrought and mired in tropes. I've had misgivings ever since.
11
Tess47 Mar 25, 2026 +3
I saw the trailer and I couldn't figure out who the main female charter was.  She looked vaguely familiar.  I even stopped at the posture to take a quiet moment to job my memory.    I had to look it up on my phone to learn it was Emily Blunt.   Girrrrrrrrerllllllllll.  Stop.
3
lexm Mar 25, 2026 +5
What happened to Emily Blunt's face? I barely recognized her and it made me sad. Regarding the trailer, it definitely did not make me want to go see the movie. I've learned my lesson with the last few Spielberg movies.
5
7askingforafriend Mar 25, 2026 +2
I liked the first shorter trailer and I was interested. Watched a more in depth one last week in the theater and it felt less interesting the more I saw of it. Not a good sign, so maybe keeping it under wraps as long as possible is a good idea. Less is more.
2
Lokan Mar 25, 2026 +2
I know I'm in the minority here, but I just can't get hyped for this movie. It seems to be all spectacle and no substance.  Hopefully it's something amazing and my opinion is changed.
2
0verstim Mar 25, 2026 +4
If Richard Dreyfus doesnt come back in the 3rd act this movie is missing a huge opportunity.
4
Shageen Mar 25, 2026 +3
Emily Blunt starring as an alien explains all the work she’s had done lately. She’s become a method actor and wanted to look less human for the role. Gotta respect that dedication.

Is it just me or is there a slight overpresence of Emily Blunt in recent movies? I feel like I've seen her in so many trailers already.

jb369 Mar 25, 2026 +14
This and Devil Wears Prada 2 will be her 5th and 6th live action roles in 4 years (2023, 2024, 2025, 2026), which doesn't feel particularly egregious, especially as she only had 1 film in the 2 preceding years. It probably feels more that way having had The Smashing Machine late last year and then 2 big budget tentpole films coming in a short time-frame this summer.

krankdude_ Mar 25, 2026 +2
Is she even a lead in this? Other than showing her constipated facial expressions in the trailer, the film appears to be driven by O’Connor.
2
DazzlingAria Mar 25, 2026 +1
she is more of a lead than O'Connor based on leaks but O'Connor is also a co-lead

Twigling Mar 25, 2026 +1
It does feel that way doesn't it? I find her performances to always be incredibly bland and unconvincing, I often wonder why she's so highly acclaimed.

MikeGalactic Mar 25, 2026 +6
Because it's a stinker.

Icy-Wrongdoer-8896 Mar 25, 2026 +15
I knew this movie would have a hype train but when I saw the trailer I was not impressed. I’ll hold my judgements till it comes out but this doesn’t look very good imo.

Twigling Mar 25, 2026 +6
Never judge a book by its cover, and never judge a movie by its trailer. Both are often misleading. I'm reserving judgement until I either see it or hear some reviews from critics that I trust.
6
Icy-Wrongdoer-8896 Mar 25, 2026 +2
I’m def gonna hold out judgement. Also not gonna get over hyped about this one though
2
MikeGalactic Mar 25, 2026 +1
It really doesn't, I love Speilberg but it looks like utter shite.
1
TitansMenologia Mar 25, 2026 +8
It's difficult to tell from the trailer it's a Spielberg movie. It looks generic Roland Emmerich nonsense.
8
Equal-Temporary-1326 Mar 25, 2026 +4
I really hope the ultimate bait and switch is the trailer was designed as incredibly misleading on purpose and instead, it becomes heralded an instant all-time classic when finally released. I have faith in Spielberg to do something like that.
4
Icy-Wrongdoer-8896 Mar 25, 2026 +4
I hope the CGI is better in the movie than the trailer. Those Polar Express lookin deer are not doin it for me.
4
sassypapaya Mar 25, 2026 +1
Omg yes I had this exact thought. Literally looks like a shitty Christmas movie
1
TitansMenologia Mar 25, 2026 +1
I'm not so sure it's about aliens. Feels like it's something else.
1
Equal-Temporary-1326 Mar 25, 2026 +1
Maybe. Sometimes, a really effective trailer is being misleading on purpose. I mean, >!they literally took the time to add a CGI Hulk into the Avengers: Infinity War trailer, only for him to never appear in the final film.!<

ZippidieDooDah Mar 25, 2026 +1
Bring on the downvotes but how is this sub/the internet at-large writing off this movie but hyping up the Odyssey. Everything from the costume design to sound design to cinematography looks either dour or filled with Nolanisms. The Coens “Oh brother where art thou” looks far more creative and visually interesting than whatever the Odyssey trailer was, plus the soundtrack was a banger. In the hands of Ridley Scott or Kubrick, I could also see a great treatment.

KingMario05 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Pity. Would have been a great spot to premiere it. Ah well, hope his upcoming Western makes a future one. As for DD, I imagine it'll premiere domestically. Kansas City, maybe?

MotherAd1865 Mar 25, 2026 +1
this might be a hot take, but it's been a WHILE since Spielberg made a movie I really enjoyed or was excited to see.
1
DazzlingAria Mar 25, 2026 +3
The Fabelmans is my favorite Spielberg.
3
MotherAd1865 Mar 25, 2026 +1
okay...

whitepangolin Mar 25, 2026 +1
F*** I was so excited to go to that!

_RoseBell Mar 25, 2026 +1
Spielberg doesn’t need Cannes. His name already sells the ticket.
1
daflash00 Mar 25, 2026 +1
Maybe it’s a secret sequel to Close Encounters of the Third Kind

rabidsalvation Mar 25, 2026 +1
I won't lie, unless this film is terrible AND ugly, I'll be watching it in the theater. First time I'll have been since Predator Badlands.
1
thegooniegodard Mar 25, 2026 +1
Living in KC, and I'm digging the marketing/street art for it.

PM_ME_YOUR_DALEKS Mar 25, 2026 +1
Launching summer blockbusters at Cannes is too big a risk. See: Dial of Destiny. It's not the right audience and if the movie doesn't blow people away, it just starts months of negative word of mouth about the film's quality. The only reward you could possibly get is good early word of mouth, but that is too big of a risk with an audience that is going to be primed against it. These are not movies that are small indies that depend on WOM in the first place.

trickman01 Mar 25, 2026 +1
How am I supposed to know if it's any good if it doesn't get a 42 minute standing ovation at Cannes?
1
miojo Mar 25, 2026 +1
That sound Emily makes is so cringy
1
VballandPizza44 Mar 25, 2026 +1
Just an absolutely terrible movie title

No Disclosure

EditorDull1503 Mar 25, 2026 +1
He learned from the Indiana Jones launch at Cannes
1
FatherDyer Mar 25, 2026 +1
In a recent interview he did with Sean Fennessey, Spielberg mentions something about a good luck theater in Austin that he would use to premier his movies going back to Jaws. Might do it again for old times sake.

rokor Mar 25, 2026 +1
Another rapture-like narrative to capitalize on the absolutely insane “chosen one” trope. Good timing from a business perspective I guess. Lots of believers out there. Think I’ll pass.
1
Sprinkle_Puff Mar 25, 2026 +1
Spielberg hasn’t been a draw in ages
1
CantAffordzUsername Mar 25, 2026 +1
So I love Steven and his Alien films but this trailer makes it seems like Emily just needs a throat lozenge and the world just loses its mind over it…
1
Batman_Shirt Mar 26, 2026 +1
The trailer leaves me dry. As in, I am not excited to see this.
1
Snoo-68474 Mar 26, 2026 +1
Honestly this movie looks really dull. I hope I am wrong tho as Spielberg usually delivers.
1
nachoquest Mar 26, 2026 +1
Good call. It would get boo-ed
1
enewwave Mar 26, 2026 +1
That shot of the girl walking toward the cabin (?) in the trailer looked so rough. The lighting and general vibe of it all gave off Gen AI from a full year or two ago vibes
1
TerribleAntelope6134 Mar 26, 2026 +1
Well, it's no *Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny*.
1
inthebenefitofmrkite Mar 26, 2026 +1
I thought the trailer was bad, with them cgi animals and story revolving around a newscaster who blurred her speech. Why did everyone assume it was aliens straight away and not her having a breakdown or embolism or a health issue? Also, only a handful of people watch television… not a shared experience like it used to be. I love Spielberg’s movies in general but he’s got a couple of bombs in his filmography.
1
DaGrouchy5196 Mar 26, 2026 +1
She looks like one of those earliest humans in prehistory exhibits in that photo, ffs. Beyond goofy and the trailer was shit.
1
wadejohn Mar 26, 2026 +1
M night shyamalan has obviously Temu-fied Spielberg’s style and now I can’t stop thinking this looks like the former’s work.
1
phejster Mar 25, 2026 +1
Oh no. This deserves news coverage.
1
Miserable-Okra-8787 Mar 25, 2026 +1
Because it’s REAL disclosure, you fools!
1
vergast404 Mar 25, 2026 +1
I mean... the trailer makes the movie look bad.

Saw the trailer last night in a theater. Didn’t really pull me into the movie…

not shocked at all. critics are extra pretentious there.

Cannes film festival 🙄. Something I will never get to, and thus, I will never care about. Jog on Cannes.
