That was better than I expected it to be.

Seriously, I haven't listened to much Sublime in years. I'd never seen Bradley with long hair, but still had to check and make sure this wasn't some previously unreleased music or something. Had no idea that his son had taken over as the singer, it's amazing!

I saw them on tour about two years ago with Stick Figure and they genuinely put on a great show. Really happy to see they've been working on new music.

You must have had some really low expectations

Love the song. However, soft rock as the genre on this?

Sublime had a short period of popularity when their self titled album dropped. They were a vibe. It's not just the music. I was one of those that wanted nothing to do with Sublime with Rome. He might be a good dude...and am sure some people liked him. But he wasnt Bradley. The whole naming thing got a little contentious. For Jakob to get with his "uncles" and reform Sublime...it could have been a "one-off that's nice" moment. But then Jakob sounds almost exactly like Brad. The vibe comes back with just enough nostalgia and heart strings being pulled. I hadn't seen them live with this iteration...but power of YouTube afforded me several live performances of the current lineup with Jakob on vocals. Close your eyes...and you hear Bradley. Glad they're releasing an album. Hope they do well.

People said that the dude from Pepper sounded like Bradley back when Pepper came out. I feel like Jakob sounds like him more than anyone else. No one can match Bradley's ease and vocal phrasing

Jacob sounds like Bradley but there’s a lot to want from new Sublime. Live shows are fun but could be way better.

Huge fan of sublime. Jakob nails it all the way. As a father though. I dont like this. Not the music or the vibe. I dig it. Brad had demons. We don't know where they came from or what they were but, im sure where ever he is, he wouldn't want his son dealing with them too. Let me explain. And this sounds bitter or dark or whatever but, do we ever see a situation where Jakob lives up to Brad's legacy? It's impossible because sublime music hit at a certain time and with several variables, to much to explain Jakob is extremely talented. There is no doubt about it But, anyone else feel like this is weirdly exploitive? Make his money but Jakob deserves his own identity. He's talented enough.

>Make his money but Jakob deserves his own identity. He's talented enough. He has his own band. This is what he wants to do. I see no problem here

Honestly, I think this was about as good as you could have expected from new Sublime. They were stuck in a bit of a no-win situation. Sublime has traditionally been about chilling out, not taking things too seriously. For that reason, it's a little bit of a harder sell for Sublime to have an emotionally open and honest song, even if it is about Bradley. So in some ways, it might feel like a stretch for Sublime to be more serious, but it's still a pleasant enough song in itself. I actually really like the chorus in particular. (I say all of this as someone who has liked a few Sublime songs, but not much more than that, so I have no real bias for or against them.)

I’m not some huge fan of Sublime, but they have had multiple songs about serious shit and not just chilling out, with many of them being their most famous. I don’t remember date r*** being a chill song, or the Rodney king riots being pretty chill (April 29, 1992), Santeria isn’t some happy story, the several songs talking about addiction, etc. It is almost like no one listened to the lyrics and just the music.

I would argue that Date R*** and April 29, 1992 both subvert the serious subject matter to some extent. For goodness sake, they make light of r*** in Date R*** by quipping that "he now takes it in the behind" in the end (as if prison r*** isn't still a horrific act, regardless of the "karma" behind it). And in April 29, they joke about how they just stole stuff during the riots. Like yes, it's a mixed bag in terms of being serious and joking, but at the very least, there's a detached irony to how they approach the heavy subject matter in those songs, which still supports my statement that the new song is more straightforwardly about the thing it's about than these examples. I never claimed to have a ton of knowledge about their catalog, but even so, I actually did know those ones you cited and had considered them before I devised my opinion I shared above. You could have respectfully disagreed with me and opened up a discussion about these counterexamples without being a d*** about it.

Whoa, you should take your own advice and listen to more sublime to chill out. You’re using one line from a song from the 90s about a guy taking it in the behind in prison as a reason the say the song is not about a serious subject. You’re a joke.

Jakob Nowell is the son of Bradley Nowell, Sublime's original singer.

Sublime were the Beach Boys on crack. Insane how much impact they had on the culture for a band that was only active for 6-7 years initially. Their 2001 VH1 Behind The Music documentary is really great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJvs4VjrG4E And this longer one from 4 years earlier is even better and more in-depth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldqUqqDXLXo
