Please take this with a grain of salt, as I’m recalling from my Covid memories. I remember Rome’s wife supporting Trump during 2020 on Insta. Hashtags, red hat, the whole nine yards. I tried to find her instagram just now to confirm but I couldn’t locate it.
I have no proof other than what I remember, so do with this info as you will.

The people driving the culture and talking points of the right have been pushing for a long time to characterize education, scientific studies, works of art or literature and public arguments challenging right wing ideology, etc. as oppression from the authoritarian left.
It doesn't help at all that the leadership of the Democratic party can't be authentic to save their life, come off as out of touch elites who don't know how to human and their signature move is scolding working class Americans for wanting too much.
So when I see people in Bad Religion T-shirts parroting these talking points it makes sense. I don't like it but it makes sense.
The right has been consistently building this narrative for at least 60 years. Propaganda works.
But if the neolibs running the Democratic party would let an authentic progressive from the left through some of this faux right wing populism could be combatted.

But some clown will always come to say that nobody wanted Bernie, MAGA is all racist idiots, etc.
All the nuance you mention about the reframing of the “authoritarian left” as the bogeyman of our time is just gobsmacking.
Every trans person I know cares more about housing, healthcare, wages and their physical safety more than being properly gendered each time, but political discourse in neoliberalism is reduced to optics only — token gestures over material liberation.

What happened to the Beach Boys?
181
Palp185 days ago

Lead singer Mike Love is a dickhead and steered the band in questionable directions in the 80s and 90, while creative backbone Brian Wilson went through a long mental health crisis. Mike Love kept the band chugging along, but as a cornball nostalgia act clinging desperately to their golden era.

Brian wrote most of their stuff and sang lead on some songs (especially on material he spearheaded, like anything on Pet Sounds for example), but especially in their surf period in the early to mid 60s Mike Love largely sang lead. However, towards the late 60s and 70s as their sound shifted left and right it was more or less an even split between different band members singing lead on any given song.

I just watched a documentary about them, and it was obvious Brian was a musical genius and the creative engine behind The Beach Boys.
The rest of the band was thrown together by his father (from his immediate family members) just to exploit his talent.
Who easier to boss around than your own sons and nephew?
It was also almost immediately obvious that Brian was on the spectrum and was genuinely miserable performing in public.
But there was zero chance his father was going to let him stop.
He eventually tried to be happy and work on things that satisfied him, and they kept dragging him back to perform the music he'd moved past. He seemed to feel pigeonholed into performing surf rock and resented it deeply.
Add to all that the pressure Mike put on him and the abuse they all took from their father/manager....
It's no surprise he had a breakdown.
The one thing I was surprised by was Brian's total dislike for the Beatles. He practically spit when asked about them.
48
IamHydrogenMike5 days ago

The reason why Brian was such a genius at mastering mono recordings was because his dad used to hit him on one ear constantly that he was deaf in that ear. Pet Sounds in mono is actually just as good as the stereo version.

True, but you also gotta give Dennis and Carl their flowers. Their post-Pet Sounds discography is extremely underrated through the 70s. Brian became less and less involved while Dennis and Carl really stepped up with their songwriting

That's a good brief summary but there's really A LOT to it that couldn't fit into even a single lengthy comment. The Beach Boys were the three Wilson brothers and their cousin Mike Love. It's also worth pointing out that Brian & Dennis were overwhelmingly the creative force behind the bands rise to fame and original hits. Mike basically wrote a bunch of their flops, never released stuff and then eventually Kokomo.
The Wilson brothers were relentlessly abused and neglected by their father. Then Mike essentially took their reigns of continuing that abuse in the 70's as the brothers were dealing with failed marriages, drug addictions, etc.
Mike hired his brother Stan Love to be their assistant, which basically entailed intimidating and beating the brothers whenever they stepped out of line or did things he thought harmed the band. Dennis eventually died probably by accident, possibly by suicide) by drowning in the early 80's after years of substance abuse and becoming homeless. The abuse of his father and then cousins for basically his entire life probably didn't help and likely actively led to that event.
Weird side fact about all of this, Stan is the father of NBA star Kevin Love.
128
treemendous_roots5 days ago
+39
This is a great and thorough description, but I would argue that Dennis Wilson was more an inspirational figure in the band than a creative force. He was the only band member who surfed and participated in hot rod car culture and street racing, so most of their songs relate to the lifestyle he lived, but he often wasn't allowed to contribute as a songwriter as much as he wanted to or even play drums on their recordings, which was a source of frustration and alienation from his bandmates. Dennis also befriend Charles Manson after picking Manson up as a hitchhiker, introducing him to the beach boys' circle of friends, many of whome were famous actors associated with the "New Hollywood" cultural scene. The guilt of having introduced the Manson Family to their victims was also a huge factor in Dennis' descent into addiction that eventually led to the aforementioned accident/possible suicide.

The Beach Boys had a much more positive effect from being associated with Reagan than I imagine will happen with Sublime being MAGA. They were basically dead in the water in the early 80s and the whole James Watt thing helped bring them back into the public eye. Their 1985 album was a bit of a hit and helped turn them into the touring machine they became (for better or worse).

Bad Brains have always been big homophobes, so it wouldn't surprise me.
I wish I could remember where I read this, but when they played in Minneapolis once, Hüsker Dü invited them to stay at Grant Hart's parents' house. Bad Brains repaid them by sneaking out first thing in the morning and leaving a note reading "Die [f-slurs] die," targeted at Hart and Bob Mould, who are both queer. And then there's "Don't Blow Bubbles," which only Darryl has actually denounced.
Edit - [Here's](https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/sep/30/bob-mould-alt-rocks-gay-icon-takes-on-american-evil-my-heads-on-fire) an article where Bob mentions it

Because there's nobody left from the original band, anyway. They're a cash-grabbing shell. The owner of Brew Ha Ha productions (who it was learned donated to the Trump campaign) that organized the fest had to cancel a handful of "Punk in the Park" festivals this year, too.
Portlanders last year organized a protest festival with bands that had dropped from the bill, and are doing it again this year on the same day: Victory Day Fest.

Eh, it checks out. All my anti establishment classmates had racist ass parents. They became Bible thumping assholes once Obama took office. Now the kids that skipped school to smoke and hang out were talking about ‘kids today’ on Facebook.

Wait, son of dead reggae-punk icon takes over his dad's brand, and embraces MAGA?
Odds on the dude coming back from the dead to give his kid an ass-whooping?

Badfish is a Sublime cover band and its far closer to Bradley's Sublime than these clowns.

I thought Sublime was from Long Beach not Huntington Beach.

Smoking weed, speaking Spanish, stealing things during a riot = MAGA aligned? I know Bradley's been gone for 30 years and his son now fronts the band but yikes.

The stealing things part is definitely MAGA aligned.

As well as the rioting, as much as they want to throw that label out at everyone else.

I’m not sure what to even think about the new Sublime. I’m a huge fan and saw them in the 90’s, but ever since Brad died, the band members have really just tried to get as much money from it as they could. It’s sad. Now that I know they kissed the orange ring, I’m definitely not inspired to spend a dollar on them.

April 29, 1992. Not a maga aligned song. Clearly the message was not received.

Is sublime actually MAGA or they just perform at a LIV golf event?
Like just curious how actually they are politically involved they are

Man, I like to think if Brad were here he would punch every mother f***** in the face who sullied the name of Sublime. This is extra disgusting.

Wait, when did Sublime and Pennywise became MAGA? This really sucks.

Bradley, who witnessed the Rodney King riots, is rolling in his grave right now. Tf?! I’ll never listen to new sublime after this. Holy shit.

Oh my lifelong fav band now likes MAGA?
Guess I'll find a new band.
That is the nail in the coffin for just about anything that affiliated with them.

Sublime has been dead for 30 years. This is a cover band that happens to own the rights.

The fact that sublime was going to play a MAGA fest is such a kick in the balls.
This is my music. And now it cannot be anymore.

Ok good thing I read the article cuz I was like “Didn’t the main guy from Sublime die?” And was freaking out that this was a Mandela effect situation lol.

Did anyone sign up to perform a MAGA Aligned Fest.... possibly while high? I'm looking at you, Cypress Hill.

Didn’t the dude from Sublime die like a long f****** time ago? What is this shit, like the rest of the band found a new lead singer and just plays the old songs under MAGA banner? Smoke two joints and go f*** yourselves.

Thank God my undying hatred for Sublime turned out to be correct. Take that, girlfriend I had in college who loved them too much. I was right!
