Brian Wilson always was and always will be, the creative genius of that group, there is no Beach Boys without him.

Love is also a longtime Republican and is pro-MAGA.

That's a good brief summary but there's really A LOT to it that couldn't fit into even a single lengthy comment. The Beach Boys were the three Wilson brothers and their cousin Mike Love. It's also worth pointing out that Brian & Dennis were overwhelmingly the creative force behind the bands rise to fame and original hits. Mike basically wrote a bunch of their flops, never released stuff and then eventually Kokomo. The Wilson brothers were relentlessly abused and neglected by their father. Then Mike essentially took their reigns of continuing that abuse in the 70's as the brothers were dealing with failed marriages, drug addictions, etc. Mike hired his brother Stan Love to be their assistant, which basically entailed intimidating and beating the brothers whenever they stepped out of line or did things he thought harmed the band. Dennis eventually died probably by accident, possibly by suicide) by drowning in the early 80's after years of substance abuse and becoming homeless. The abuse of his father and then cousins for basically his entire life probably didn't help and likely actively led to that event. Weird side fact about all of this, Stan is the father of NBA star Kevin Love.

My first ever concert was a Beach Boys show in the 90's and they played Kokomo twice! They closed with it! It was the most tepid and boring performance ever. America opened for them and they were great!

The fact that "Kokomo" was released during the Mike Love years is telling.

Because of this I grew up thinking they were a novelty act with some fun songs for commercials about surfing. I was shocked when I learned they were respected and a Beatles competitor at one point

My pop used to hire them to play Chrysler corporate events in the 90s. He was so proud.

Kokomo is one of the worst songs of all time.

I fully agree with you and I loved Sublime. Recently one of their new singles played and I didn't hate it, it was *Until tue Sun Explodes*(?)Jakob really hit the nostalgia for me, because it was a lovely homage to Brad both in sound and vox. It's gross to know they did a MAGA show last year though, come on now boys. Cover band or not -- that ain't Sublime.
