April 29, 1992 seems a little weird to play at a MAGA festival

Most white boys in Long Beach, Seal Beach, Huntington Beach and basically any beach town or LA adjacent city are. Real ones were priced out a long time ago.

My pops introduced me to these guys! He was a regular at Fenders in the 80s and put me onto some great punk. Funny enough he worked security for a bunch of early sublime shows.

Maybe….Rome wasn’t so bad?
28

I kind of liked Rome, once you accept that sublime with Rome was its own thing there were definitely good tracks And I've seen him live a few times, I definitely cannot imagine him being maga
33
relentless_fuckery Apr 8, 2026 +6
Please take this with a grain of salt, as I’m recalling from my Covid memories. I remember Rome’s wife supporting Trump during 2020 on Insta. Hashtags, red hat, the whole nine yards. I tried to find her instagram just now to confirm but I couldn’t locate it. I have no proof other than what I remember, so do with this info as you will.

Sublime, Pennywise, and Ataris playing a MAGA concert was definitely not on my bingo card. My nose is crooked to this day after getting it smashed in a Pennywise circle put in the early 00s.

The people driving the culture and talking points of the right have been pushing for a long time to characterize education, scientific studies, works of art or literature and public arguments challenging right wing ideology, etc. as oppression from the authoritarian left. It doesn't help at all that the leadership of the Democratic party can't be authentic to save their life, come off as out of touch elites who don't know how to human and their signature move is scolding working class Americans for wanting too much. So when I see people in Bad Religion T-shirts parroting these talking points it makes sense. I don't like it but it makes sense. The right has been consistently building this narrative for at least 60 years. Propaganda works. But if the neolibs running the Democratic party would let an authentic progressive from the left through some of this faux right wing populism could be combatted.
61
Dizzy_Exchange_6924 Apr 8, 2026 +28
🎯🎯🎯 But some clown will always come to say that nobody wanted Bernie, MAGA is all racist idiots, etc. All the nuance you mention about the reframing of the “authoritarian left” as the bogeyman of our time is just gobsmacking. Every trans person I know cares more about housing, healthcare, wages and their physical safety more than being properly gendered each time, but political discourse in neoliberalism is reduced to optics only — token gestures over material liberation.
28
MWEAI Apr 8, 2026 +18

What happened to the Beach Boys?
181
Palp18 Apr 7, 2026 +653
Lead singer Mike Love is a dickhead and steered the band in questionable directions in the 80s and 90, while creative backbone Brian Wilson went through a long mental health crisis. Mike Love kept the band chugging along, but as a cornball nostalgia act clinging desperately to their golden era.
653
BillBraskee Apr 7, 2026 +381
Brian Wilson always was and always will be, the creative genius of that group, there is no Beach Boys without him.
381
Jealous-Leg444 Apr 7, 2026 +106
Not a huge fan and didn’t even know he WASNT the lead. Never even heard of the name Mike love, but know all about Brian
106

Well, Brian Wilson died recently-ish (everything is last year since COVID). I got to see him on the Pet Sounds Anniversary Tour. He still had it.

Pythagoras_314 Apr 7, 2026 +31
Brian wrote most of their stuff and sang lead on some songs (especially on material he spearheaded, like anything on Pet Sounds for example), but especially in their surf period in the early to mid 60s Mike Love largely sang lead. However, towards the late 60s and 70s as their sound shifted left and right it was more or less an even split between different band members singing lead on any given song.

MissSassifras1977 Apr 8, 2026 +48
I just watched a documentary about them, and it was obvious Brian was a musical genius and the creative engine behind The Beach Boys. The rest of the band was thrown together by his father (from his immediate family members) just to exploit his talent. Who easier to boss around than your own sons and nephew? It was also almost immediately obvious that Brian was on the spectrum and was genuinely miserable performing in public. But there was zero chance his father was going to let him stop. He eventually tried to be happy and work on things that satisfied him, and they kept dragging him back to perform the music he'd moved past. He seemed to feel pigeonholed into performing surf rock and resented it deeply. Add to all that the pressure Mike put on him and the abuse they all took from their father/manager.... It's no surprise he had a breakdown. The one thing I was surprised by was Brian's total dislike for the Beatles. He practically spit when asked about them.
48
IamHydrogenMike Apr 8, 2026 +6
The reason why Brian was such a genius at mastering mono recordings was because his dad used to hit him on one ear constantly that he was deaf in that ear. Pet Sounds in mono is actually just as good as the stereo version.
6
HixWithAnX Apr 7, 2026 +16
True, but you also gotta give Dennis and Carl their flowers. Their post-Pet Sounds discography is extremely underrated through the 70s. Brian became less and less involved while Dennis and Carl really stepped up with their songwriting

John_T_Conover Apr 7, 2026 +128
That's a good brief summary but there's really A LOT to it that couldn't fit into even a single lengthy comment. The Beach Boys were the three Wilson brothers and their cousin Mike Love. It's also worth pointing out that Brian & Dennis were overwhelmingly the creative force behind the bands rise to fame and original hits. Mike basically wrote a bunch of their flops, never released stuff and then eventually Kokomo. The Wilson brothers were relentlessly abused and neglected by their father. Then Mike essentially took their reigns of continuing that abuse in the 70's as the brothers were dealing with failed marriages, drug addictions, etc. Mike hired his brother Stan Love to be their assistant, which basically entailed intimidating and beating the brothers whenever they stepped out of line or did things he thought harmed the band. Dennis eventually died probably by accident, possibly by suicide) by drowning in the early 80's after years of substance abuse and becoming homeless. The abuse of his father and then cousins for basically his entire life probably didn't help and likely actively led to that event. Weird side fact about all of this, Stan is the father of NBA star Kevin Love.
128
treemendous_roots Apr 7, 2026 +39
This is a great and thorough description, but I would argue that Dennis Wilson was more an inspirational figure in the band than a creative force. He was the only band member who surfed and participated in hot rod car culture and street racing, so most of their songs relate to the lifestyle he lived, but he often wasn't allowed to contribute as a songwriter as much as he wanted to or even play drums on their recordings, which was a source of frustration and alienation from his bandmates. Dennis also befriend Charles Manson after picking Manson up as a hitchhiker, introducing him to the beach boys' circle of friends, many of whome were famous actors associated with the "New Hollywood" cultural scene. The guilt of having introduced the Manson Family to their victims was also a huge factor in Dennis' descent into addiction that eventually led to the aforementioned accident/possible suicide.

I was coming here to make a negative comment that the article posted only cited listnook, but your comment reminded me that listnook can be pretty informative.
34
oh_what_a_surprise Apr 8, 2026 +8
Except he forgot one of the most important members of the band, arguably more important to their sound than either of the other Wilson brothers, Al Jardine.

ComfortablyNomNom Apr 7, 2026 +36
My first ever concert was a Beach Boys show in the 90's and they played Kokomo twice! They closed with it! It was the most tepid and boring performance ever. America opened for them and they were great!
36
pushing_past_the_red Apr 7, 2026 +13
I saw them with John Stamos about 10 years ago. I didn't think they were gonna play Kokomo, and then BAM!! Second encore!!

Kokomo twice Jesus that’s embarrassing

The fact that "Kokomo" was released during the Mike Love years is telling.
11
treezy_22 Apr 7, 2026 +31
Because of this I grew up thinking they were a novelty act with some fun songs for commercials about surfing. I was shocked when I learned they were respected and a Beatles competitor at one point

7
gershbec Apr 7, 2026 +12
The Beach Boys had a much more positive effect from being associated with Reagan than I imagine will happen with Sublime being MAGA. They were basically dead in the water in the early 80s and the whole James Watt thing helped bring them back into the public eye. Their 1985 album was a bit of a hit and helped turn them into the touring machine they became (for better or worse).

I worked a couple of small Cypress Hill shows in Houston in the late 90s. They put on a fantastic show & were incredibly nice to staff & fans. I'm not surprised one bit that pulled out of that BS festival My best celebrity interactions include Cypress Hill, Susanna Hoffs, & John Goodman (obviously not on the same day, lol). Just good vibes across the board

Bad Brains have always been big homophobes, so it wouldn't surprise me. I wish I could remember where I read this, but when they played in Minneapolis once, Hüsker Dü invited them to stay at Grant Hart's parents' house. Bad Brains repaid them by sneaking out first thing in the morning and leaving a note reading "Die [f-slurs] die," targeted at Hart and Bob Mould, who are both queer. And then there's "Don't Blow Bubbles," which only Darryl has actually denounced. Edit - [Here's](https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/sep/30/bob-mould-alt-rocks-gay-icon-takes-on-american-evil-my-heads-on-fire) an article where Bob mentions it

33
appleparkfive Apr 8, 2026 +7
The songs Bradley was writing is just so jarring compared to the fanbase. It's pretty crazy when you just look over the lyrics in everything. Very similar to Nirvana. I mean listen to the acoustic version of Pool shark. That's some frat guy's deepest song most likely.
7

OG Sublime fan here. There is no way anybody associated with the 90s scene would swing MAGA. This make my sick.

158
Edgy-in-the-Library Apr 7, 2026 +25
I fully agree with you and I loved Sublime. Recently one of their new singles played and I didn't hate it, it was *Until tue Sun Explodes*(?)Jakob really hit the nostalgia for me, because it was a lovely homage to Brad both in sound and vox. It's gross to know they did a MAGA show last year though, come on now boys. Cover band or not -- that ain't Sublime.

It’s interesting how pervasive MAGA feels sometimes, just in general (and at the polls), and then you see how utterly poisonous it is in entertainment.

Im proud of Cypress Hill for dropping out lol

Erdos_Helia Apr 8, 2026 +13
It's so weird because I always thought the kind of people that listen to Sublime are not the kind of people MAGA likes.

edwardturnerlives Apr 7, 2026 +12
So Interrupters are right wing too right? I know Aimee is, or at least rightwing adjacent (libertarian? I considered myself libertarian once). I would love to be told I'm wrong and I will rescind my comment.
12
BeardedScarf Apr 7, 2026 +5
Genuinely asking, what makes you believe that Aimee leans that way?
5
Teammx112 Apr 7, 2026 +17
She's been on Alex Jones show and wrote a song for Ron Paul: [https://youtu.be/Wnj3rlRiPa8?si=cHyMsGCZFT\_WfYUv](https://youtu.be/Wnj3rlRiPa8?si=cHyMsGCZFT_WfYUv)

UnimaginableThinker Apr 7, 2026 +39
I will no longer be practicing Santeria, f*** Sumblime.

Psychological_Pay530 Apr 7, 2026 +24
Sublime was Bradley, Bradley was Sublime. This is the cover band that inherited the name after his death.
24
distractionmo Apr 7, 2026 +27
Sublime is MAGA? Talk about betrayal.
27
UserWithno-Name Apr 7, 2026 +23
One member is loud about it. Idk if the rest support. The issue is the organizer of the event / "wealthy" promoter company is maga.

JohnCenaJunior Apr 7, 2026 +9
Now we know the reason Rome left.

AbeVigoda76 Apr 7, 2026 +17
Sublime died with Lou Dog.
17
Kastigart Apr 7, 2026 +10
Van still smells like him so his memory lives on
10
Sevans655321 Apr 7, 2026 +31
It’s interesting that this band has leaned right after all these years. It seems like the least on brand thing I’ve ever heard.
31
Jcooney787 Apr 7, 2026 +15
Well the lead singer does 30 years ago so whatever iteration it is now is a maga band not OG Sublime
15
provisionings Apr 7, 2026 +9
Proof that boys need their dads
9
AssaultLemming_ Apr 7, 2026 +7
How could sublime be maga aligned wtf is this timeline?
7
cecilivan Apr 7, 2026 +15
Because there's nobody left from the original band, anyway. They're a cash-grabbing shell. The owner of Brew Ha Ha productions (who it was learned donated to the Trump campaign) that organized the fest had to cancel a handful of "Punk in the Park" festivals this year, too. Portlanders last year organized a protest festival with bands that had dropped from the bill, and are doing it again this year on the same day: Victory Day Fest.

Eh, it checks out. All my anti establishment classmates had racist ass parents. They became Bible thumping assholes once Obama took office. Now the kids that skipped school to smoke and hang out were talking about ‘kids today’ on Facebook.
9
Duke_Of_Halifax Apr 8, 2026 +8
Wait, son of dead reggae-punk icon takes over his dad's brand, and embraces MAGA? Odds on the dude coming back from the dead to give his kid an ass-whooping?
8
VisualLawfulness5378 Apr 7, 2026 +22
That’s not my sublime.
22
Financial-Desk-669 Apr 7, 2026 +16
Badfish is a Sublime cover band and its far closer to Bradley's Sublime than these clowns.
16
windfinder_ Apr 7, 2026 +6
I thought Sublime was from Long Beach not Huntington Beach.
6
Substantial-Ad2200 Apr 7, 2026 +31
Smoking weed, speaking Spanish, stealing things during a riot = MAGA aligned? I know Bradley's been gone for 30 years and his son now fronts the band but yikes.
31
syntaxVixen Apr 7, 2026 +22
Talk about rebelling against your father
22
VonThomas353511 Apr 8, 2026 +8
The stealing things part is definitely MAGA aligned.
8
VonThomas353511 Apr 8, 2026 +5
As well as the rioting, as much as they want to throw that label out at everyone else.
5
Sky-Soldier0430 Apr 8, 2026 +7
I’m not sure what to even think about the new Sublime. I’m a huge fan and saw them in the 90’s, but ever since Brad died, the band members have really just tried to get as much money from it as they could. It’s sad. Now that I know they kissed the orange ring, I’m definitely not inspired to spend a dollar on them.
7
Some_CoolGuy Apr 8, 2026 +5
Yeah Cypress Hill ain’t dealing with that shit 🌬️💨
5
DarkArtMarksman Apr 8, 2026 +5
Way to shit in your father’s legacy kid. Gross.
5
PDT_FSU95 Apr 8, 2026 +8
April 29, 1992. Not a maga aligned song. Clearly the message was not received.
8
randomacct7679 Apr 8, 2026 +4
Is sublime actually MAGA or they just perform at a LIV golf event? Like just curious how actually they are politically involved they are
4
NoLobster7957 Apr 8, 2026 +4
Man, I like to think if Brad were here he would punch every mother f***** in the face who sullied the name of Sublime. This is extra disgusting.
4
mad_titanz Apr 8, 2026 +6
Wait, when did Sublime and Pennywise became MAGA? This really sucks.
6
NfamousKaye Apr 8, 2026 +5
Bradley, who witnessed the Rodney King riots, is rolling in his grave right now. Tf?! I’ll never listen to new sublime after this. Holy shit.
5
Apart_Falcon Apr 8, 2026 +5
Bradley would never
5
random_think Apr 9, 2026 +5
Oh my lifelong fav band now likes MAGA? Guess I'll find a new band. That is the nail in the coffin for just about anything that affiliated with them.
5
CozmicBunni Apr 7, 2026 +10
Damn, Sublime sucks now?! Can we have anything nice in this timeline?
10
aran_maybe Apr 7, 2026 +6
Sublime has been dead for 30 years. This is a cover band that happens to own the rights.
6
MrLurking_Sanspants Apr 8, 2026 +7
The fact that sublime was going to play a MAGA fest is such a kick in the balls. This is my music. And now it cannot be anymore.
7
ElGarnelo Apr 7, 2026 +4
Disappointed that the Interrupters still play on it.
4
RetailBookworm Apr 8, 2026 +4
Ok good thing I read the article cuz I was like “Didn’t the main guy from Sublime die?” And was freaking out that this was a Mandela effect situation lol.
4
ZeeKapow Apr 8, 2026 +4
Bradley was a chill guy and he would have never approved to this.
4
antimagamagma Apr 8, 2026 +4
I’m disappointed in Sublime. I’m also sure they don’t care, but I’m very disappointed.
4
dynamic_caste Apr 8, 2026 +4
Did anyone sign up to perform a MAGA Aligned Fest.... possibly while high? I'm looking at you, Cypress Hill.
4
ThaddeusMaximus Apr 8, 2026 +4
Didn’t the dude from Sublime die like a long f****** time ago? What is this shit, like the rest of the band found a new lead singer and just plays the old songs under MAGA banner? Smoke two joints and go f*** yourselves.
4
itsathrowawaymmk Apr 8, 2026 +4
Thank God my undying hatred for Sublime turned out to be correct. Take that, girlfriend I had in college who loved them too much. I was right!
4
squintismaximus Apr 8, 2026 +4
Eh. Always like cypress hill better anyway.
4
EnslavedBandicoot Apr 8, 2026 +3
Sublime is maga? Jfc nothing is sacred anymore.
