I think Snyder wanted to make Aquaman the complete opposite of the joke he had become in mainstream audiences, so they cast the guy who was the complete opposite of Aquaman in Jason Mamoa. But that really wasn't necessary. They could have cast Alan Ritchson in the role, and he would have still been cool and badass.

I rather liked Momoa in his first solo movie and the extended cut of JL. But much like the rest of the cast, he was never given much to work with anyway. But Lobo is perfect for him, you can already tell he he’s happier

Yeah I think he was fine as Aquaman, conceptually you can tell they didn't really know what they were doing though.
Imagine in the 80's with Batman, or relatively recently with Superman, deciding people don't think he's cool enough so let's do some craaazy casting. It's pretty obvious that even if the actor is good, the projects aren't going to be as good as they could be.

The Director, Craig Gillespie, said:
“In each case, it’s always a little different, whether she has her full power, whether she has no power, if she's on a red planet,” he says. “Also, where she is in the story emotionally dictates a lot of how these fight sequences go. If she's in a very angry place, it's going to be much more frenetically messy, aggressive kind of camera work. If she's feeling in the zone, so to speak, the camera work gets more fluid. So, trying to figure out where we are in the story and how that reinforces her emotionally with the fight sequences was really fun.”

In the comic she’s specifically on a planet with a red sun at the start so she can have a drink on her 21st birthday and actually get drunk. I do like how they're treating her arc as the counter to Clark. They went through the same thing of losing their planet and while he was raised to see his role as being there to help people, she wasn't and just feels lost as a result.
But they both need to save Krypto because obviously.

I’m not sure on the current situation, but Im pretty sure in the past Kara ends up in the Phantom Zone for a bit. So she doesn’t age, and meets Clark when he is an adult. Being Superman, he doesn’t need protection from his “older” cousin, and so she doesn’t “have a purpose”.
68
jerslanMar 31, 2026
+53
There's been a few different versions over the years, but basically she didn't leave Krypton at the same time and also she gets stuck in suspended animation and takes longer to reach Earth. I think there' a version where she actually left first (and again was "frozen") and doesn't know Krypton is dead until she meets grown-up Clark.
She's his older cousin, and remembers holding him as a baby, but because of her being stuck in suspended animation so long, he's now older than her.
53
Mean_Coat_9702Mar 31, 2026

In this version, kara grows up on argo city which is broken off from krypton after it blows up. She sees everyone around her slowly die from radiation and is eventually sent in a ship by her father to earth when the city is close to death.
25
ManofSteel_14Mar 31, 2026

Not sure which way they'll go here but in most iterations her pod puts her in suspended animation. So by the time she finally wakes up Superman has already grown into an adult while she stayed the exact same age whilst frozen
19
dustyfaxmanMar 31, 2026
+13
Her pod was damaged (?) and thrown off course and she was put into suspended animation so she'd survive the longer journey to earth iirc.
The comics has variations on this across the years, like with a lot of 'secondary' characters (ie not superman, batman or wonder woman), origins are often tweaked with each iteration.
She was in the phantom zone, or close enough for it to affect her aging, in one of them, but in the comics how the phantom zone works was changed to fit a superman arc, so that version of the origin wasn't going to work and had to be changed to fit with the new 'lore'.
This is from memory so is very shaky and could be wrong.

I’m genuinely curious if they’re going to use this movie to further contextualize Jor-El’s message from Superman. It worked in context, I guess, but it feels pretty off to have Lex be actually right about Supe’s origin like that. Hopefully this can right that off feeling I’ve had.

Clark was a baby, Kara was a preteen sent to watch over her baby cousin to a world of people who look like her but aren’t like her only for her to arrive too late to do the one thing that would have given her a purpose. She is a tragic character. Where her cousin represents the hope of krypton, she really represents nothing and has been kicked by destiny.
20
Johnny_HolidayMar 31, 2026
+5
I don't think I've seen a story that goes fully into what I think makes her feel lost. For me, it's not just that she lost everyone she knows but before she saw them all die, she was told that only her and her cousin will survive. It was her job to take care of and protect Kal. So when she arrives later than him, not only is he an adult but he's also the most powerful thing on the new plant to the point where he is the protector of the new planet. Kara has no purpose now. How do you protect Superman? She lost her home, her family, and her purpose

I wish they didn’t make him all tatted up and pierced barbarian man though.
I think the red haired swashbuckler swagger his design had in the books made him a lot more interesting.
Having him look somewhat conventionally attractive, or romance novel coded would have been a lot more interesting.
Like, what if Krem was sort of like Star Lord, but attractive, with this “I steal what I want and get away with it because I’m so pretty and manly” vibes?
Granted, I get that they probably wanted to avoid making this movie into another “girlboss” power fantasy thing to avoid the vapid Cristal Drinker manchild mobs… And there certainly is a strong possibility of enraging them if Krem had been a more complex villain than this post apocalyptic Mad Max heavy metal stand-in goon.
Yet I still think that the swashbuckler vibes could have been more fun and interesting for Krem.
57
ThePlatinumPancakesMar 31, 2026
+38
The swashbuckler Krem is a much better choice character wise than space barbarian Krem. Krem’s whole thing is that people trust him because he’s attractive and charismatic - which in turn allows him to commit great evil (even though he’s just a guy) because people tend to let their guard down around him.
Like your telling me that Ruthye’s family trusted this Krem enough to let him into their home?
38
ericomplexMar 31, 2026
+11
Yeah, it seems they reduced him to a “bad guy” cliche.
I really wonder if this was to avoid the pushback that other films like Captain Marvel received though.
Some people just cannot accept stories where good looking guys are evil. They immediately think there is some “woke” agenda that’s anti-man.
Krem made Woman of Tomorrow so much more interesting, and also allowed it to walk in more feminist themes without being overbearing for the c**** seats. Had really been looking forward to that nuanced and complex storytelling, yet ultimately it seems we are forced to again pander to the lowest of audience expectations.

scorching take, but i think it looks good and probably will be better than any of the trailers let on. Shame it’s not as colorful or fantastical with its work designs as the book, but that’d also be a hard thing to follow and I can’t really see anything looking that good outside of an animated adaptation, which like yeah, you can forever argue that a lot of these stories are just going to visually look better in an animated medium.
Excited to see more Milly Alcock as Supergirl as I liked the glimpse we got of her at the end of Superman and really liked her as young Rhaenyra in HoTD, there’s some very clear stuff directly lifted from Woman of Tomorrow which is cool, and a lot more Lobo than expected, which is also cool.

edit: I wonder if people really understand what I'm talking about from True Grit, or if I'm just a degen.

'We gonna John Wick this motha...'
But yea, one reason i 'respected' Iron Man 3 is just that following The Avengers they took a movie to reset the scale from world ending event to 'just a single guy being targeted' which was just nice in that these days we are in a situation of EVERY MCU movie is a world ending event that for some reason the other power friends dont show up for or take notice of (or even remember by the time their own movie comes along)

Iron man 3 is messy but its actually trying to do something different from the increasingly claustrophobic mcu mold. The ending was a kinda messy cgi battle in a boring locale as it tradition now, but I enjoyed pretty much everything else about it.

The plot is just True Grit really, little girl wants revenge on the guy that killer her dad, there's a subplot where Krem of the Yellow Hills poisons Krypto but its 100% a revenge plot

It's also like "True Grit" as well, with Supergirl being Rooster Cogburn in this iteration.

> Shame it’s not as colorful or fantastical with its work designs as the book
This is my biggest complaint from the trailer. So much of the locations and sets look ugly, and the gorgeous art in the book is a big part of what makes it so good.
A lot of these sets look like fairly accurate representations of the locations in the book, which when portrayed in a realistic version like this would be ugly, but if they can't make them look beautiful, then I wish they would have taken a little more liberty with it to give us some better looking visuals.
I'm still really excited for this though.

Dunno, i like supergirl and lobo, but dont like how everything else looks, very generic orange scifi, the main villain looks like someones goon (in the old sense of the word).

It also doesn't help that the trailer pretty much gave away the whole story of the movie
Dog gets shot , supergirl seeks help , the little girl that tries to help her gets he friends killed by a group of evil men , supergirl helps the little girl " get revenge " while the little girl helps her find a cure for doggo.
Lobo also becomes their friend and helps them in their journey.

Just realized Craig Gillespie is the director. Cruella is a guilty pleasure of mine. The trailer gives a lot of the same vibes. Larger than life female character + dog + attitude + needle drops + heavily stylized shots. Hope it’s good!

I'm surprised they're not using Cruella and I, Tonya more in the marketing. I don't think Gillespie has much name recognition but if you say the name of his movies, people will remember.

Honestly smart decision for the film version to add a ticking clock especially because >!it implies Krypto's actually in danger, unlike in the book where the twist is he was fine the whole time!<. It'll help to set the film version apart and justify the faster paced story

I’m guessing too that a monthly comic series better lends itself to traveling for two weeks before spending another week on a planet, and next month will be a day on a monster planet and then a week on another planet the following month…—in terms of how you can pace things and how the audience will accept it.

This looks like a fun time... But
I get the feeling they're taking away the boldest parts of Woman of Tomorrow. Starting away from Kara so that we can see her from a fresh set of eyes, making the villain a regular looking dude, the journey taking a lot of time (making the universe feel vast and alive)...
Also violence in that comic is so... Mundane, even when it's horrible and on a very big scale. Like when the bad guy kills the girls dad it's just a bad day in that land and not an epic shot with fire and killer music, you know?
I also wonder if they'll adapt some of the cooler twist towards the end (spoilers obviously) like how Krypto was fine but she wanted to keep an eye on swordgirl or very specially the ending, which is bold as f***.
Like I get adapting WoT is hard because that comic is a 10/10 but idk, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Two Superman-linked films in a row where saving the dog is a major part of the plot.
Let's be honest. Clark was saving Lex from Kara. If Kara came back and found Krypto hurt or dead, Lex will be a smear on the ground before he sees her coming.

This one might be marginally more important than Superman was. You have to get people to care about the B/C-listers if you're building a universe.
If they kept the budget sensible I could see this one making around 300 million and be considered a win. If the writing is decent.

Well, Jason Momoa is basically Lobo, he doesn't even need a makeup. Casting is perfect. But somehow all this paint and hairdo... I dunno, something's off. It is 85% there not like 100% like Deadpool. You can't tone down the main man, it just doesn't work. It has to be like Simon Bisley'' Lobo.

I'm glad they foregrounded the story and the stakes here for anyone unfamiliar with the (amazing) source material.
The Deeply Gen X-Coded needle drop is now far more aligned with Kara's emotional state, and the clear thesis of the movie. **She's a depressed and traumatized survivor who doesn't have Clark's sense of belonging, and she sees Krypto as her only real family.**
I *know* people like that, and I think making that obvious in the trailer is a great move.
I also hope revealing that 1) Krypto doesn't *die* in the initial attack and 2) The poison from Krem of the Yellow Hills has a three-day clock doesn't scare people off from watching the movie, out of fear that The Dog Will Die.
Ultimately, this movie will work based on how it handles the relationship between Kara and Ruthye, an the little moments that help show the latter what it *really* means to be a hero. Momoa as Lobo is a fun addition that helps expand the new DCU and will allow for big action scenes along the way, but this story needs to stick the landing with showing Kara as an equally impressive hero to Clark not in spite of her trauma and issues, but because of her ability to do the right thing regardless.

I think this movie suffers the same as Superman in that it's very much a "James Gunn" movie. I know he directed and produced Superman and only produces this, but his "Style" of superhero film is very same-ish and doesn't seem to branch out of its comfort blanket.
I really enjoyed this style of film when I first saw Guardians of the Galaxy but by the time the third one came along it was too much to bear.
I know it's not the marvel universe and I'm glad it isn't, but one of the core strengths of that universe is that all of the films have different directors, different styles, and "feel" different to one another, whereas I know they're linked, but this trailer feels very much like it could be scenes from Superman.
Don't hate me for this, I'm not a movie critic or anything, it's just an observation and my own opinion.
