‘Supergirl’ Star Milly Alcock Says ‘I Really Can’t Stop’ Backlash and Understands Why Scorsese and Ridley Scott Criticized Superhero Movies: ‘Not Every Film Is for Everyone’
Milly Alcock knows there will be 'Supergirl' backlash just because she's a female superhero and understands why Scorsese hates superhero movies.

> Milly Alcock told Vanity Fair in a new interview that she’s aware she’ll face backlash over leading Warner Bros. “Supergirl” simply because she’s playing a female superhero. The 25-year-old actor is no stranger to dealing with intense fandoms having broke out as young Rhaenyra Targaryen in the first season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon.” > “It definitely made me aware that simply existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on,” Alcock said. “We have become very comfortable having this weird ownership of women’s bodies. I can’t really stop them. I can only be myself.” > Vanity Fair also asked Alcock about legendary directors such as Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott speaking out against the superhero genre. Scorsese infamously compared comic book movies to theme park rides when talking about the worrisome state of film exhibition, while Scott said superhero movies are “boring as shit” and “they aren’t any f****** good.” Alcock does not seem to mind. > “I get it. They’ve been around for f****** ever making phenomenal films,” she said. “Not every film is for everyone. The beauty of art is that you can be selective.”

She’s right. Nobody’s forcing anyone to watch.

Right. This is such a non issue. Sounds like they were asked their opinion and gave it. Now she needs to give her opinion on them having an opinion? Who cares?

Right! Scorsese is free not to watch Supergirl, I’ll watch it and probably enjoy it because I like dumb, colorful fun.

I don't think Supergirl will be dumb. It won't be as worthy and serious as a Scorsese movie, but it's likely to have a lot of character study on grief and loss, and the unhealthy ways that people deal with them. But it will also have fun action and quips.

Scorsese is good no doubt but the Irishman was awful so he can make some stinkers

She did well but it's annoying that she has to answer this. The only people who still care about Scorsese's comments are desperate entertainment "journalists"

Already seeing folk seething on Twitter at her for telling the truth.

Exactly, I saw the trailer in theaters. It’s not for me, so I won’t be watching it. It’s not a big deal. There’s like five other movies coming out this summer that I do want to see. I’m just happy we’re getting a good variety of movies in the theaters again!

I haven’t watched a Scott or Scoresse film in a decade, so I get it. Not everything is for everyone.

Thank goodness. This is not a film. It is a turd. I’d rather sit through an episode of Bonanza than watch this c***.

Good head on her shoulders, that one.

I was waiting for a coffee in Kyoto a few weeks ago and Milly Alcock was literally next to me outside smoking a dart and talking to her boyfriend. She seems like a real cool hang but she is *tiny*

Well, I don't really like Ridley Scott's non historical, historical movies either. So there! ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

He’s made some absolute bangers so not sure what you’re talking about

Ridley Scott has made some of the best movies of all time, and also a lot of forgettable movies that I have forgotten.

Napoleon is supposed to be some biopic and it's basically fanfiction with how inaccurate the whole thing is.
37
butipreferlottie Mar 31, 2026 +13
I haven't seen it, but from everything I've heard it's not even an entertaining movie, so it doesn't qualify for the Braveheart pass either

RayTracerX Mar 31, 2026 +5
Braveheart is history changed for the screen. Napoleon is a full on 19th century British propaganda cartoon

It's whatever the opposite of fan fiction is. Hater fiction?

I haven't seen the movie so I won't talk about quality but to me it was presented as a biography about the guy but that appears to not be remotely true. If it was presented as a fictional story about a real character, which there is nothing wrong with, I think people would be less bothered.

0ttoChriek Mar 31, 2026 +1
I've not seen it, but I did watch a series of clips from battles in the movie, and immediately saw some egregiously inaccurate stuff that made me not want to watch it. It's not hard to get this stuff right. It's very well documented what happened at Waterloo, blow for blow, and it's interesting enough without inventing wholesale.

Neither am I but I really didn’t like the movie. It was so slow and felt like it wasn’t really saying much. I came out of it feeling like I had wasted two hours of my life and would’ve preferred just watching a documentary about Napoleon.

So you prefer your fantasy movies to pretend to be real even though still just total fantasy? Good for you… some of us are capable of digesting a wider range of movies.

He's a guy that hits big and misses badly. There's no in between. Post the Martian, his hits have now become more niche as well.

I think the majority of the human race over estimates how valuable their opinion is. I include myself in that majority.

I’m a lifelong comic book geek and I think she looks great in this role. Yeah, I’m old enough to have had a big crush on Helen Slater back in the day, but Milly’s Supergirl is going to absolutely knock it out of the park if they nail the adaptation from the source material (*Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow* by Tom Taylor and Bilquis Evely… so damned good). There will always be haters and people who can’t stand new takes on characters they think they have some weird ownership of. Can’t do anything about it except try and mute the noise. And seriously… go read the book. Lobo isn’t in it but I think he’ll be a great addition to the movie adaptation.

Spirited-Sun899 Mar 31, 2026 +2
The first time I read Woman of Tomorrow it was in the chapter form and sometimes I’d miss an issue so continuity was amuck. I just got the whole book and read it from start to finish. Great story and if the movie is “based” on it, I think I will be satisfied.

borkborkbork99 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Totally agreed. I re-read it as soon as I learned they were adapting it for the film. Plus, Bilquis’ artwork is stunning. Check out Helen of Wyndhorn if you can find a copy. 🙂

The rightwing youtube crowd will make 90 million videos about her quotes being "too woke" and "too girlboss."

And they are doing it now, well maybe less popular channels right now. But those same people on Twitter are responding and its as bad as you think it is.

Gladiator 2 was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen so I’ll take Ridley Scott’s opinion with a few grains of salt

Whatever, I’m excited to see Milly as Supergirl

Give the girl a break. I like her acting!

When the film's so bad you're pre-emptively responding to the criticism.
1
ManOnFire2004 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Or responding to questions she's asked... But let's just ignore that fact to talk shit I guess

Not a fan of superhero movies all that much anymore, but I also can’t remember the last Scorsese movie I enjoyed either.

I'm f****** pumped. Supergirl has been so God damn iconic to me since I was a child, I've been waiting for years now for her to headline her own film!

I like how they went of light or no make up with her character.

Hmmm i.mean dome supehero.mobies are films but some are just...dreck Probably will get hate here but as far as actual cinema and film a lot of superhero films don't do anything to advance film.as as art gorm and I think.their point has been proven if studios are only doing those types of movies the amount or opportunities to get something different is really stifled. The success of Sinners or Bugonia are proof that Superhero films are kinda losing their appeal when those films are clocking huge BO returns but that Superman movie barely broke even

Ridley Scott is one of most overrated directors of all time, so… who cares what he thinks?

The DC movies have effectively undergone a reboot, so they took the opportunity to switch him over to a character he actually wanted to play.

I don't get the criticism there. She's successful in a specific area of life. She should enjoy that. She's been the lead role in a tv series and the lead role in an upcoming movie. She's probably done lots of other shit too. People would kill for that success. And what because people don't like superhero shit she's bad? So the f*** what. 8 billion of us on this planet. 7.999 billion of us will just go about our lives, working regular ass jobs or running small to medium companies enjoying limited to mid success. She's got a niche that we don't. A living is a living.

JayJax_23 Mar 31, 2026 -2
I rather have this be accepted about Superhero movies rather than Superhero movies that are self conscious and embrassed of the source material. Yes 2000s X Men and Batman had to do it to recover from the goofiness of Batman and Robin(Which I love) but atp we see there’s a market for it and we don’t need to handhold general audiences as if they can’t suspend disbelief
