Superstore may be the most underrated sitcom of the past decade

Posted by hawkingbirds19

from episode 1, it has its legs and some really funny bits. the idea of working in retail is so universal In America and the show nails it so well without being preachy or understating the issues.

Those little vignettes of store life they used as transitions between scenes were so amusing!

Present_Scientist995 Apr 5, 2026 +289
Those transition bits were genius - reminded me of working at electronics store back in college, customers really do the weirdest things when they think nobody watching.

PayneTrain181999 Apr 5, 2026 +119
As someone who worked at Walmart for years, those were so hilarious
119
IrrelevantPuppy Apr 5, 2026 +79
It’s legitimately impressive how many absurd things they can come up with that we all respond with “oh right, yeah that’s a thing”

I can't decide if 17:46 is longer or shorter than I expected

just4browse Apr 5, 2026 +66
I liked how, in the finale, one of those was dedicated to that raccoons that had been mentioned throughout the show finally leaving the store
66
Truethrowawaychest1 Apr 5, 2026 +32
They're pretty accurate too, I've worked in both grocery stores and retail stores, the writers had experience
32
PastimeOfMine Apr 5, 2026 +13
I saw the cast do a table read & q&a live once. Someone asked them about the in between scenes being written and they all contributed and competed for them, sometimes looking for the weirdest things they saw in real life to get them into the show
13
Turnbob73 Apr 5, 2026 +14
Some of them were straight up things I’ve seen at a real target before lol
14
Courtaid Apr 5, 2026 +10
They are based on reality. I known Ive actually seen about 99% of them in real life.
10
Shinagami091 Apr 6, 2026 +4
I want to say they were re-enactments from things actual retail workers have seen people do
4
cuentanro3 Apr 5, 2026 +7
They remind me of Clerks.
7
Marcaloid Apr 6, 2026 +2
What do you mean there's no ice? I gotta drink this coffee hot?!
2
kazh_9742 Apr 6, 2026 +5
I think I saw someone mention that they use like public use versions of popular songs so that they could have the atmosphere. I know I know a lot of them but they are different.
5
A911owner Apr 6, 2026 +2
The one where the customer takes a bite out of a candle had me rolling
2
pinkwooper Apr 7, 2026 +1
They are my favorite part of the show! But yes, it is underrated and has a satisfying ending, too.
1
noseybean Apr 5, 2026 +127
I just started it for the first time and I’m loving it. As someone who works in retail I’m constantly seeing moments on the show that are meant to be funny but that I could actually see happening.
127
Siliceously_Sintery Apr 5, 2026 +28
I loved it right up until there were jokes about a mom immediately returning to work after having a baby. As a Canadian that’s just fucked up..
28
gigglesmickey Apr 6, 2026 +45
dats america bb.
45
swanny246 Apr 6, 2026 +10
With Cheyenne? Wasn’t there literally an entire storyline about it? I don’t remember it really being played for laughs.
10
Flimsy_Big7991 Apr 6, 2026 +16
>!Amy gave birth in Season 4 if I recall.!< >!She got a suspension at the end of Season 3 and was rehired at the start of Season 4 which nullified her maternity leave eligibility. It was brutal and definitely not played for laughs either.!<
16
Zalvren Apr 6, 2026 +11
Yeah there are plenty of capitalism/America bad moments (Matteo stuff too) that is not played for laughs (well there may be some jokes about it but it's among the serious parts of the show). I mean the plot of the show is pretty hard against capitalism and fighting for workers in almost every plot thread
11
Flimsy_Big7991 Apr 6, 2026 +4
Then they were coincidentally cancelled once they went hard on unionisation. Hmm.
4
Zalvren Apr 7, 2026 +2
Unionisation story took multiple season IIRC, not exactly a reason for cancelation, they were canceled one season after Amy left the show, that's probably more what killed them for ratings.
2
WaywardWes Apr 6, 2026 +6
Yeah it was supposed to be fucked up but it’s just too real to find any amusement. Wish they didn’t include that. Or had Glenn/the store fight for her more.
6
Carly_Fae_Jepson Apr 6, 2026 +2
They should have tied it into the union plot.
2
DeadSharkEyes Apr 5, 2026 +83
One of the hardest times I’ve ever laughed at a tv show was during the episode where the Cloud 9 mascot is discovered to be a cannibal, and there is a scene where two of the characters are having to paint over a big mural of Cloud 9 mascot standing behind a sleeping person with the words “see you in your dreams!” 😂😂
83
YALL_IGNANT Apr 6, 2026 +12
I was a bit lukewarm initially, but that was the episode that made me decide I really liked Superstore.

Bo (After Glen offers Cheyenne $20,000 to be his surrogate): Yo for $20Gs you can stick whatever you want in either of us!
122
mlemaire16 Apr 6, 2026 +29
Bo has so many great lines. I love them all. At his wedding: Like sinceriously, thanks for coming to my nuptials and what have you. Him and Cheyenne looking at a crib, and he just says “Yeah, being a dad and shit.” He was such a fun character, especially his terrible rapping, but he was so committed.

Prince_of_Pirates Apr 6, 2026 +7
I thought your name was Glem. 😂

His character on the Fallout show is great too!

hirkyflobble Apr 5, 2026 +50
Pretty much Bo in the apocalypse. Wonderful character.
50
Bentonite_Magma Apr 6, 2026 +7
OHHHHHHH that’s where I remember that actor from. Goddammit
7
Dan_Of_Time Apr 5, 2026 +34
The thing I love about Bo is he seems like the sort of character who would be insanely annoying after you've seen him in a few scenes but they manage to constantly make him entertaining without changing much about him. He has some insanely good lines in the later seasons
34
ItsChappyUT Apr 5, 2026 +17
I think that means that they used him just the right amount.
17
Any-Routine-2188 Apr 5, 2026 +71
Also felt like it was the only show where seeing the Covid outbreak didn’t feel jarring
71
jokekiller94 Apr 6, 2026 +17
Fun fact: it was one of the first productions to be up and running during Covid and a lot of protections were set up by that show.
17
ikickedagirl Apr 6, 2026 +12
The scene where they were trying to decide where the measurement of "six feet apart" starts - from the center of you? They agreed it would start at "nips and tips."
12
Bentonite_Magma Apr 6, 2026 +5
They dealt with it realistically in the show, but it didn’t serve the comedy. I think that’s where the quality went downhill.
5
thortmb Apr 5, 2026 +185
Its in my routine of rewatchable binges when my wife and I don't have anything else to watch. Superstore, the office, parks and Rec, raising Hope, community, the good place, Brooklyn 99, new girl, the goldbergs and How I met your mother
185
discounthockeycheck Apr 5, 2026 +116
Throw shitts creek in there you wont regret it

I think you mean Fold in Schitts Creek and you wont regret it.

Ew!

johnnyma45 Apr 5, 2026 +14
You're only missing St. Denis Medical, which is like a perfectly honed version of all of the above. Made by Justin Spitzer too. Excellent cast, timing, comedic pacing.
14
xExogenX Apr 5, 2026 +39
This is pretty much our rotation too, I would also recommend New Girl.
39
thortmb Apr 5, 2026 +7
Yes new girl is in the list too! Knew i was forgetting one
7
mattdawgg Apr 5, 2026 +30
Yes! Raising Hope! I never hear anyone talk about this show. It can be a little corny/cheesy here and there, but overall it's one that has me laughing out loud at least 5-6 times an episode.
30
ImALeaf_OnTheWind Apr 5, 2026 +13
Greg Garcia also created one of my faves, My Name Is Earl, and Sprung which came right around '22 and I didn't discover until recently.
13
willva76 Apr 5, 2026 +7
Add in St Denis Medical, just renewed for season 3
7
FerguSwag Apr 5, 2026 +4
Excellent rotation. You’ve inspired me to check out a few of those.
4
estrangedjane Apr 5, 2026 +5
No, My Name is Earl?! Come on!
5
thortmb Apr 6, 2026 +3
Lol raising Hope is great for any my name is earl fan. I thought it was okay but I dont rewatch it
3
Bobbybezo Apr 5, 2026 +2
Only raising hope I didn't watch out of this.
2
HratioRastapopulous Apr 5, 2026 +5
You should really check it out. Very sweet and funny show.
5
DougS2K Apr 5, 2026 +2
This is a great list but no Seinfeld???
2
hankscorpiox Apr 5, 2026 +1
These are our rotation shows too, except never seen raising hope
1
thortmb Apr 5, 2026 +2
Its very funny. I don't really care for my name is earl but its kind of a sequel, the characters show up in it from time to time. The parents are incredible, the grandma is hysterical, the daughter (hope) is so cute and the parents, Jimmy and Sabrina are great. Highly recommend
2
shelwood46 Apr 5, 2026 +1
We have similar sitcom tastes -- my current fave is a British comedy called Here We Go (season 1 is free on Kanopy, S1&2 is on Britbox, S3 will be there eventually and has already aired in the UK).
1
DrunkenCrusader Apr 6, 2026 +1
Schitts Creek and crazy ex girlfriend are the only two shows you need to add to your list to make it perfect
1
daiablo_dragon Apr 5, 2026 +250
Check out St Denis Medical. Created by the same ram I believe
250
giraffevomitfacts Apr 5, 2026 +122
Superstore is definitely the best show ever created by a sheep, and it’s all the more impressive if he was working in a second show concurrently.
122
lookitsjustin Apr 5, 2026 +32
He's a real trailblazer for sheep in the entertainment industry.
32
awshucks79 Apr 5, 2026 +18
Ewe guys are funny!
18
The_Defiler Apr 5, 2026 +8
Always grateful to see the shear talent it takes to make wooly funny jokes like these…
8
schweinebauer Apr 5, 2026 +29
American Auto was excellent, St Denis I am slowly warming to
29
Starob Apr 5, 2026 +10
>Created by the same ram Damn that's impressive.
10
Bfeick Apr 5, 2026 +12
We'll never get a show this good again because they can't afford the ram anymore.
12
thegeekiestgeek Apr 5, 2026 +78
This show is good but I feel like they try to make a joke every single time someone speaks so there isn't enough drama or actual dialogue.
78
steponmedaddies Apr 5, 2026 +45
I’ve been trying to figure out why I’m not liking it as much as I want and this is exactly it. That said they’ve been doing some really great work with Bruce lately. He’s the only character that’s leveling up. It was so sweet when he was defending Matt.
45
Shhhhhhhh_Im_At_Work Apr 5, 2026 +27
Matt and Bruce are the growing standouts IMHO, and Joyce is pretty great. They’re underutilizing David Alan Grier bad though!
27
steponmedaddies Apr 5, 2026 +7
I would die for Joyce lol
7
RegularGuy815 Apr 6, 2026 +8
The most recent episode, the women choir song, and Wendi McClendon-Covey coming out with her weird little dance, and then totally biffing immediately, is one of the funniest things I've seen in a while.
8
amicablecardinal Apr 5, 2026 +11
It's a show that does so well in Reels and Shorts with clips from the show that sell it, but when my wife and I tried watching it, it was so... flat.  You hit the nail on the head.
11
RegularGuy815 Apr 6, 2026 +6
Season 2 has been a noticeable improvement, IMO
6
zakkwaldo Apr 5, 2026 +13
also reminder that ‘good girls’ on netflix is set in the same universe and they even go to a cloud nine in a few of the episodes
13
brainlightning Apr 5, 2026 +27
What’s the biggest dog you’ve ever seen and why?
27
sparkyface Apr 5, 2026 +17
I liked the interstitial moments in between scenes.
17
makeitrayne850 Apr 5, 2026 +15
It is definitely one of the most consistent sitcoms out there, it captures the absolute absurdity of retail life so perfectly that it is almost therapeutic for anyone who has ever worked a service job, the writers really knew how to weave social commentary into the comedy without losing the heart of the show
15
InappropriateTA Apr 5, 2026 +30
What do you mean underrated? Do you mean you slept on it? Because it had over 6 million viewers its first season. It moved to Thursday prime time for seasons 2-6, and it has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes for seasons 2-5.
30
WhoJustShat Apr 6, 2026 +6
Typical this is my favorite show but other people I know dont watch it therefore its underrated
6
TheGardenBlinked Apr 6, 2026 +7
I’ve honestly tried to like it. I just find the characters unbearable. That said, they’d probably find ME unbearable. Potato potato.
7
nextact Apr 5, 2026 +6
Good soundtrack too
6
Vestalmin Apr 5, 2026 +13
I mean it went for 6 seasons, it’s not like it failed
13
hawkingbirds19 Apr 5, 2026 +19
I mean underrated in the sense that it's not very often brought up in the really good sitcoms in the last many years.
19
ImperialSympathizer Apr 6, 2026 +4
The leads being America Ferrera and Ben Feldman was the issue you're looking for. They're both sweet, but neither one is funny like the really big comedy heavy hitters, and unfortunately the show was built around them.
4
weeble182 Apr 5, 2026 +133
I found the absolute lack of chemistry between the two romantic leads really killed my interest in the show. Everything around them was decent enough but anytime it focused upon them, it just dragged it down to a halt for me
133
aquatic_ambiance Apr 5, 2026 +99
The awkwardness is kind of realistic though. And it took a long time for anything to happen so it wasn't that unvelievable
99
mae1347 Apr 5, 2026 +22
You’re not wrong, but since that is always my least favorite part of all these sitcoms, it didn’t bother me. Everything else was so good
22
[deleted] Apr 5, 2026 +36
Same, but add on literally every time Mateo was on the screen. Have not ever hated a character in a sitcom more
36
mj12353 Apr 5, 2026 +26
He was fine when he was just work mean like calling incompetent people incompetent or the like. But he devoloved into a judgmental slightly racist loser who drags every conversation down for no reason at all
26
worm600 Apr 5, 2026 +30
More than Gina from Brooklyn 99?
30
[deleted] Apr 5, 2026 +16
Alright that's a real solid contender
16
Disgruntled_Viking Apr 5, 2026 +7
He's the character they put into every show, just not usually as unlikeable as him. Someone who people are friends with, but would never be friends with in real life. He tries to screw everyone over every chance he gets.
7
a-hthy Apr 5, 2026 +19
And Amy was just a horribly unlikeable character. I think America ferrera is a fantastic actor but the writing for Amy was awful and I found her hard to watch
19
eye_can_see_you Apr 5, 2026 +42
She's great as the "Floor Manager who's kind of given up on life" but the second they actually put her in charge she just becomes mean and it's not fun
42
ImperialSympathizer Apr 6, 2026 +2
Correct, and neither of those actors are very funny. It's why as much as I love the show, it's always second tier
2
Trashbagok Apr 5, 2026 +5
Those scenes were bad and so much of that just seemed kind of tacked on, but I think there was enough going on around it to carry the show.
5
lodeddiper961 Apr 5, 2026 +7
As someone who used to work at a walmart, its pretty relatable lol
7
Hceverhartt Apr 5, 2026 +6
I liked how American Ferrera had a different name tag with a new name every episode
6
Evening_Froyo_7506 Apr 5, 2026 +11
Have you ever noticed that Amy's (America Ferrera) name on her name tag changes every episode?
11
nonitoni Apr 5, 2026 +39
The two mains become more and more dislikable but the rest of the cast shines. I wouldn't binge it but I do have it in my comedy background playlist.
39
nonresponsive Apr 5, 2026 +25
I definitely think this hurts them the most. At least everyone makes fun of Jonah. One of my favorite moments was when Dina was telling Jonah to annoy someone, and he's trying to play it off, but Dina keeps going and it took Garrett saying, "He knows what he is." But Amy is basically untouchable, and it got worse as she became manager. At least Glenn had Dina as a foil to all his nonsense. Amy was just as unbearable at times, in equal measures as Jonah, but had no one calling her out.
25
whichwitch9 Apr 5, 2026 +23
Amy felt really realistic, tho, especially as the floor manager. I think everyone who's worked retail has had someone like that- she wasn't a bad person, she was just done with shit. Also kinda treated dirty a lot- the episode she had to go back to work after giving birth was iconic. But it does remain a bit of a plot hole one character literally was in the same situation, but everyone went out in a limb to make sure she got taken care of. Amy did not get that treatment. She was kinda always put in a situation where she had to be a bad guy.
23
Wafflelisk Apr 5, 2026 +6
I like how Garrett keeps track of the "crazy white guy shit" that Jonah says. God knows there's a lot
6
Whydoialwaysdothis69 Apr 5, 2026 +10
Incredible show
10
manfredpanzerknacker Apr 5, 2026 +4
One of our comfort shows - so good.
4
makeitrayne850 Apr 5, 2026 +3
It is honestly such a hidden gem, the way it captures the absolute chaos of retail while keeping the characters grounded is brilliant, it manages to be hilarious and heartfelt without ever feeling forced, which is a tough balance to strike
3
HardcoreKaraoke Apr 5, 2026 +4
It was. Although it was another awesome show that had it's final season tainted by current events though for me, like Brooklyn 99. My only other issue with the show is as a p******* tech I loved the pharmacist character. I wish he didn't disappear. I know the actor plays a similar type of personality in St. Denis Medical, I just haven't watched yet. It's a great show though. I'm surprised only one relatively"unknown" actor from before the show broke out (Bo).
4
CBenson1273 Apr 5, 2026 +7
Absolutely fantastic show. Not only the leads, not all of the supporting performances were pitch-perfect. The will they/won’t they was done well. And unlike a lot of shows, it totally stuck the landing.
7
YALL_IGNANT Apr 6, 2026 +4
I think as an ensemble cast it is very strong. There are a number of absolutely hilarious cast members ... Sandra, Cheyenne, Marcus, Glenn, Dina all come to mind right way.
4
cuansfw Apr 5, 2026 +3
Enjoyed the show a decent amount. Then watched compilations a while later and realized just how solid the show really was and how well it holds up multiple viewings. Rewatched and thoroughly enjoyed it!
3
dustin91 Apr 5, 2026 +3
I loved it from the jump, and the fact they brought up the Amazon show Patriot in a quick line was brilliant.
3
_Bipolar_Vortex_ Apr 5, 2026 +3
Love the music, the transitions, and the whiteboard work like the new benefits plan.
3
anecessaryend Apr 6, 2026 +3
Glenn getting stuck on Steve slays me, every f****** time.
3
beuhring Apr 7, 2026 +3
Mildly humorous and predictable
3
MrMegaPhoenix Apr 5, 2026 +5
I loved it Yeah sure the main two leads aren’t the most likeable, but most of the rest of the cast was super funny Almost felt by design?
5
Conscious-Lemon-1054 Apr 5, 2026 +2
I think the show could’ve survived without them because the strength of the overall cast.
2
Crazyalexi Apr 5, 2026 +2
“I hope they don’t fire all the s****!”
2
urgasmic Apr 5, 2026 +2
That union conversation on the phone is one of the funniest scenes ever
2
Chippo10291 Apr 5, 2026 +2
I just started it and I totally agree.
2
pepperbet1 Apr 5, 2026 +2
I gave it a shot years ago, but Mark McKinney's kermit voice for his character was road block for me. I had to give it up.
2
faux_italian Apr 6, 2026 +2
I enjoyed it, but I feel like it was trying hard to land a laugh consistently, but doesn’t come close to some other iconic workplace comedies
2
imVeryPregnant Apr 6, 2026 +2
I worked at a shitty retail store for years but I thought the show was so incredibly cheesy I had to turn it off after the first episode
2
ArchDucky Apr 6, 2026 +2
Season 2 of that show is an all time banger. Every episode is great. OP, check out "[St Denis Medical](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1vXQeGjozs)" on Peacock. Its by the same guy.
2
monchota Apr 6, 2026 +2
Here maybe but it was really just somemore dumb/cringe comedy. Most people are over that or juat rewatch what they know
2
hillean Apr 6, 2026 +2
underrated? it had 6 seasons
2
Ericthedude710 Apr 5, 2026 +8
Superstore is funny af. It is one of those kinda dumb sitcoms that you can just binge or have it on as backround noise.
8
MeatTornado25 Apr 5, 2026 +4
Not exactly a hot take. The last decade hasn't been the best for new sitcoms, and Superstore has always been rated as good but not great, so it's never been in danger of being *over*rated.
4
BigSto Apr 5, 2026 +5
finishing it up again for the billionth time rn wayyyyyyyyyy ahead of its time
5
Bob_Fancy Apr 5, 2026 +14
There goes Listnook, not knowing what the word underrated means again.
14
Adrenapup Apr 5, 2026 +6
It is though? It doesn't have the same popularity as other sitcoms. Maybe talked about more on listnook, but not elsewhere.
6
Lochifess Apr 5, 2026 +6
It’s popular enough to have multiple seasons and award nominations. Absolutely not underrated.
6
BaseballFuryThurman Apr 5, 2026 +3
The other sitcoms you're referring to are likely better sitcoms
3
Bob_Fancy Apr 5, 2026 +4
Yeah it’s mentioned on here often and ran for 6 seasons, underrated doesn’t run for 6 seasons.
4
Microwave1213 Apr 5, 2026 +1
There goes listnook again, being pedantic and rude to someone who just wants to have a conversation about a TV show on r/television
1
HistoricalRoad1755 Apr 6, 2026 +3
It's typical quirky dialogue American sitcom slop.
3
giraffevomitfacts Apr 5, 2026 +17
Completely disagree. It’s mediocre, formulaic and the characters are two-dimensional ciphers delivering telegraphed punchlines. It’s safe, inoffensive TV families leave on in the background.
17
Earlyadopter35 Apr 5, 2026 +48
Safe and inoffensive depending on your politics. The show had storylines about union busting, inadequate healthcare, protecting an illegal immigrant from deportation and gay characters.
48
WildMajesticUnicorn Apr 5, 2026 +17
Completely agree. It’s watchable but it’s not one of the greats.
17
mae1347 Apr 5, 2026 +8
I would agree that it’s not “one of the greats” but I do think it’s underrated. It was consistently funny.
8
peon2 Apr 5, 2026 +6
Agreed. I watched the whole thing. It was fine, it's an average sitcom. It wouldn't cross my mind for top 50 sitcoms to recommend to someone because it's not great.
6
IcyTransportation961 Apr 5, 2026 +1
Exactly. Its background while you do something else. Not awful, but fine with a few genuinely funny moments. Could easily recommend 50 funnier shows
1
Kavbot2000 Apr 5, 2026 +2
I found it more pleasant than funny. I don’t think I would rewatch it.
2
BaseballFuryThurman Apr 5, 2026 +5
Nah, it's pretty average.

I enjoyed the first season or two but it got stale really fast. Still finished the series but it felt like a chore towards the end.

It's really funny and I loved watching it but let's be honest here, it has the same problem as US The Office: the first season isn't that funny. There are some real cringe bits in there but I stuck around and glad I did.

it’s a weird show. a lot of its discrete parts work, but it doesn’t feel cohesive at all and basically nobody has any chemistry with each other. the main dude in particular ultimately i found it pretty unrewarding. the transitional vignettes are inspired, though.

COVID killed this show. It was a great show. A little over the top at times, but it was a tv show so it could be.

Never would have though to watch a network TV show, but I gave it a chance based on your post, and you are so right.

I agree it's sooo freakin funny. Anybody who has ever worked retail will get it. Also if you're in the mood for rare gems Happy Endings as well as Better Off Ted

It's great retail comedy, and great workplace comedy. Unfortunately, it has poor character development so you never really care like you did for characters on The Office or P&R or Seinfeld or Golden Girls.

Didn't this show have multiple seasons?

It’s honestly my Office. I found that show a little too exhausting to watch because it was a little too good at parodying workplace micro aggressions. It’s not exactly fun to relive those when you’re trying to relax and you already have to put up with it in real life. Superstore just feels more chill and down to earth.

Loved the show but boy the covid season made me feel uncomfortable. Hated being reminded we were still living in that time.

Sitcoms ceased to exist when they were replaced by scripted fake reality trash TV programming in the early 2000s.

Is this derived from the UK programme “Trollied”? Literally just finished the final episode last night. Sounds like it. If not, it’s very uncanny. Trollied started 2011.

Superstore is my favorite show and I’ve been searching for a show as funny ever since it ended. I think Stumble is on par and deserves so much more attention than it’s getting.

I’m a pretty big comedy nerd who has followed Spitzer from both the office and Mulaney’s failed sitcom which I may have been the only person who enjoys parts of it. I loved this show from the jump, it was one of the last shows I was DVR’ing each week on my cable box before I cut the cord and I have fond memories of seeing a new episode in my Library. Even if plenty of people slept on it while it was airing, it made it to 6 seasons. It’s hard to call a network comedy **the most** underrated show if it made it to 6 seasons in the mid-aughts. Any show that I would consider truly underrated would have been cancelled by the 2nd or 3rd season which I’d consider just a clever and with equal jokes per minute but didn’t remotely enter the larger cultural zeitgeist or spark gif memes, etc. I can think of a few other single camera comedies that I found just as funny but had half the run and none of the notoriety & second life on streaming.

I’m glad I stuck with it when I started binging. Too many of the characters were grating in the beginning. They needed the edges softened so we could sometimes laugh with them instead of at them (or yell at them). Had I watched it weekly when it first aired, I don’t know if I’d’ve stuck it out.

NBC didn’t seem to really promote their comedies after the must see tv era ended. They became way more focused on the franchise dramas and the different tv personalities they had on their roster. They had some great sitcoms around that time that you hardly ever heard about. A lot of their shows streamed well within the past 10-15 years and became way more popular after the fact. Superstore is a great example of this!

I finished it a few days ago, and I'm very glad I gave it a shot. I always respect when a network sitcom is willing (and allowed) to go dark, and Superstore is one of the better examples of that. Garrett's "walk" card is one of my favorite examples, but the show skillfully mines everything from the working poor circumstances of the employees to slave reparations for laughs without resorting to lazy shock humor. The running gag about severed feet being found in/around the store was *gold*, and I love that they actually paid it off. The one thing that did put me off a bit was the increased frequency of full cringe scenes as the show went along. Awkwardness was present through the run and was mostly used expertly (Jonah at the quinceañera, Amy's dinner with Jonah's family), but I just don't like extended cringe scenes like Amy talking in front of Emma and her friends during the teen store takeover and every 20+ second scene where Jonah digs himself deeper by correcting himself eight times while trying to clarify an initial statement. I also think the writers did Amy a little dirty by leaning hard into the "awkward mom" angle from season three on. But a lot of people love cringe (US version of The Office, Curb Your Enthusiasm, etc.), so maybe that's a positive for others. As a whole, it's one of my favorite modern broadcast sitcoms. Not quite Michael Shur territory, but close.

It was good but I think the romantic angle was pushed too fast. It seems once the “will or won’t they” is done, the show loses some of its charm. The office handled that rather well, but that show went on to two seasons too many.
