His father was not either, they made him one before becoming the supreme leader. He was the frontrunner not because of his comptenency but because of political reasons, so they just made him one to bypass the criteria. It is the same thing with his son. While it is not a restriction for the supreme leader's son to become the next one but in this case he was the least competent person to take the position since he had no formal position within the political system. By appointing him as supreme leader they basically made the system a monarchy which they were against when they revolt against the shah.

Well basically they have rules for the rank of cleric you have to be to be eligible to be elected. He doesn’t hold a high enough rank for it but neither did his father. They seemingly lower the rank requirement every election so the point of having it at all is unclear. It’s like if you needed to be 40 elected but they wanted to elect a 30 year old so they ignored the rule to allow it anyway.

Ayatollah is a rank for theological qualification, like a PHD for shia-islam. You are supposed to actually study for that, not just be daddies boy or have the most friends with guns.
