Well, that sounds awkward. Pay your taxes people. That's how they get you.

>Despite that level of notoriety, the government claimed Hatch didn't claim his "Survivor" winnings. He was convicted of tax evasion in January 2006 Wait... if he didn't actually receive the funds how can he owe taxes? Also, in writing, when denoting a television show title you're supposed to use italics. Individual episodes are in quotes. Come on USAToday, you're supposed to be a news site. Lern U sum Engles

Claim as in "claim the earnings as income on his tax return". That's a totally normal usage of english.

I think they mean claim like the tax term. Like if someone gifts you a large sum of money, you have to claim it on a tax form.

Gotcha. I see, I see.

Actually, at least in the US, the giver declares the sum on their taxes if it’s over $19,000 (per recipient) per year via gift tax return Form 709. No one pays taxes on it under a certain amount, if I recall the lifetime limit is like $15 million. But the recipient doesn’t pay taxes on a gift and doesn’t claim it, it’s not considered regular income.

This guy is such a loser. All he had to do way pay the tax he owed of probably 300k or so. Instead he now owes 10x that and growing. He also has defended himself badly over and over. If he had hired a good tax attorney he could have negotiated a payment plan and been done with this nonsense a very long time ago.

This is why game shows withhold taxes before handing over a check or prize.

Nowadays they do. Back in the day they probably didn't.

Well, that and being abusive to his son, too. Got swept under the rug and he made excuses, but it happened and he’s a total PoS.

I remember him rubbing his naked crotch on another contestant in the All-Stars season to make her uncomfortable. I think that was the last episode I ever watched. Just a full on sexual assault on evening TV with a few little pixels blurring out the actual p****.

In Canada, winnings aren't taxed. Never understood why it isn't the case in America given all the tax breaks available for a certain class.

Because America runs on a gambling economy now. So we need to make money it.

Bianca Del Rio said it best “pay your f****** taxes!” Idk why people who win these game shows think they can just refuse to pay taxes lol
