>Nobody knew what Germany was doing until the war was basically over
Nobody was certain of the extent of the atrocities but people knew about there being atrocities by that point (The Sicily invasion was in July 1943).
The US Press was reporting on the atrocities in November 1942. The Allies then published the “Declaration on Atrocities” on December 17, 1942 which includes "The United Kingdom, the United States and the Soviet Union have received from many quarters evidence of atrocities, massacres and cold-blooded mass executions which are being perpetrated by Hitlerite forces in many of the countries they have overrun..."

Germany and Italy declared war on the US as a response to the U.S. declaring war against Japan. Was the U.S. supposed to ignore countries declaring war on them?
21
bdickieMar 26, 2026
+7
The argument at the time was that people didnt want to be dragged into another European war. Neither Germany or Italy had the capacity to reach mainland US, so a declaration of war isnt the same threat as it was to the UK or France.
My point is the US government waned to join, the public was largely split. And amoung the split war with Japan was less supported then war with European Axis powers. Pearl Harbour allowed the Government the perfect rational to enter the war, but if it had been European Axis powers attacking the US instead of Japan its debatable the US gets involved in the Pacific. Japan attacking forced the US to get involved in the Pacific and allowed it to get involved in Europe.

No, people knew that Jews and others were disappearing, there were news of ghettos, the bad conditions in war prisoners camps and they knew what Hitler was doing to the civilians in the East front and France.
There were articles and testimonies, the pictures came later but they knew, they didn’t know how many thousands were able to kill every day but they thought there were camps somewhere in the east

Actually that’s a really common misconception that I think gets repeated alot because we as humans do not like to accept that we could have helped in situations and didn’t until it was “too late”.
Obviously Wikipedia is not a great place for most historical sources, but the page on the [International Response to the Holocaust](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_response_to_the_Holocaust#:~:text=Additionally%20the%20Foreign%20Secretary%20Anthony,source%20of%20significant%20historical%20debate) is a really quick skim of a bigger issue that could be read on for hours.
> *”BBC radio aired two broadcasts on the final solution during the war: the first at 9 am on 17 December 1942, on the UN Joint Declaration, read by Polish Foreign Minister in-exile Edward Raczynski, and the second during May 1943, Jan Karski's eyewitness account of mass Jewish executions, read by Arthur Koestler.[10] However, the political rhetoric and public reporting was not followed up with military action by the British government- an omission that has been the source of significant historical debate.”*
Also, from 1933 to 1945, the US accepted more refugees than any other country at that time, but still did not even meet their immigration quotas. We say “never again”, but unfortunately history is doomed to repeat itself because we the people have not changed enough.

Both of my grandfathers were in the Army (World War II for one, Korea but not in combat for the other). Both absolutely hated the Army when they got out.
Though my grandfather who was in WWII was proud of the fight—he’d helped liberate a concentrate camp in Germany after crossing the Rhine. But then he got demoted for stopping his men firing on their own allies (because he went against orders).

War used to be seen as something honorable to go to because we didn’t have pictures and because we didn’t have automatic weapons. WW1 had bodies literally piling up on top of each other bc it was the first war in such a scale to feature automatic weapons and tactics hadn’t caught up yet. That mixed with those images circulating back home changed the world perception of war.

My dad was drafted for Vietnam. He was a conscientious objector, but he thought draft dodgers were pussies. He went through training, got deployed, and then immediately found a local to trade him some liquor for his gun right in front of his commanding officer. I don’t think it’s good that anybody is being deployed in this war.
Edit: and 12 minutes in we’re getting predictably Reddit-y responses that show how much the internet cuts off empathy.
Nobody should be going to Iran to fight this war. If you’re calloused enough to be saying “good - send *them*” recognize that any broad “THEM vs US” is toxic, dehumanizing and is exactly the type of thing that the MAGA/Project 25 bullshit is meant to instill.
Edit 2: I’m not even paying attention to these replies anymore but if you’re saying they deserve this, sit and say this out loud to yourself a couple times and see how it feels: “Trump is terrible. So anyone who votes for him should go die in a war.” That shouldn’t feel validating or vindicating.

Not valid excuses, same applies to anyone currently signing up for ICE. He’s mega MAGA, ran into his account on reddit a couple years ago when Everything Sucks was out. He posted on there. I feel like I kinda went on a back n forth with him about being a part of a group that is historically anti-lgbt yet supporting his sister in a show where she plays a girl figuring out her sexuality.
I said couple years ago but that was almost 10 years ago, where did time go?!

Bro sewed on SSgt last year and made a celebratory post on IG, the caption was all about his f****** sister and the stupid American Eagle commercial.

Thank the troops for what? They aren’t protecting my freedoms, they are marching to the imperialist drums. I hate this thank the troop bullshit, you volunteered for the biggest socialist job program in the USA.

Absolutely! The military enjoys socialism in many many ways but let's just talk about their government provided health care--even as they scream "Obamacare is socialism!" Idiots. I'm a veteran by the way, former AF entitled to Tricare. But I acknowledge it for what it is.

I'm not thanking any troops this time around. We have all seen how the government treats veterans. So, you only have yourself to blame troops. No thanks coming from me. You're not keeping me safe, and I have no sympathy or thanks for you. Get. Screwed.

I get the sentiment. But a lot of young men and women who were raised in poverty or abusive homes don’t have other options, and recruiters manipulate and prey upon those troubled youths. A lot of young people who join really have no idea or know any better. We are raised and taught in school that it’s an honor to be in the military and until that illusion is broken for them, they believe it all.

I was raised in an impoverished and abusive home. I don't kill people for money. Which is kind of interesting I guess. I guess I'm just different that way.

I've never killed anyone. I would hope you haven't either. I'm also not seeking employment where I will be asked to kill people or help others kill people. That's what the military is. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

You realize the majority of people that join do so because they grew up in lower socio economic environments and this is one of the only true ways they can escape the cycle? Probably not. It’s one thing to be against this war, which I also am. But it’s one thing to be a complete d*** and assume that all active service members are only there because they support the President. Oh and one last thing you blamed how veterans are treated by the government on them and then told active service members to get screwed. The logic doesn’t make sense.

Lots of poor people build lives that don't involve murdering people for money.
>But it’s one thing to be a complete d*** and assume that all active service members are only there because they support the President.
They'd have to support our military if they joined up. Right? I don't. This sure as hell isn't just about Trump. Have you seen what our military has done in your life? We don't have a draft. We have a volunteer service. These people chose to be a part of this, and have lost all my sympathy.

Guess what? There are a lot of OTHER people who ARE willing to kill people for money and power. Many of them have even worse ideologies.

I’ll offer sympathy to the ones that were just trying to pull themselves out of poverty and this was the only viable option.,..only to get sucked into a bullshit war.
6
CheapWeight8403Mar 26, 2026
+3
I don't think that pulling yourself from poverty by killing other people is an option that anyone should take.
When you join the military you are signing up to fight in possible bullshit wars. The military is a job to commit acts of violence upon other countries. That's it. All the other stuff they do is in support of committing acts of violence.
You don't get a free pass on committing acts of violence because you grew up poor.

The president who started this war to begin with? The same President who said he’d be “for peace” in 2024? The same President who has done nothing but make unkept promises time and again shifting the goal post whenever he is confronted on it?
