Eh that one made a ton of sense. At the time Elon was thought to be some sort of scientist/business tycoon hybrid, just like Stark. Sweeney being in a movie about fashion makes much less sense since shes an actress not a model

I think they thought she'd have an improved profile by the time the movie was out. Instead it's just gotten more muddy as time goes on. Still very marketable but reactions are mixed with plenty of strong negative reactions and she isn't really a high fashion icon at all. This of course assumes she was being portrayed in a positive light, if her cameo was supposed to be comedic and self-deprecating I could see it not working. Especially if the focus is meant to be on the other characters.

Kinda like how people watch the original film with modern lenses and is “shocked” that Anne Hathaway was ever considered a “fat girl” in that world.

Another time I can think of when someone played themselves was Julia Robert’s in one of the Oceans movies. She has a long legacy of well known movies and some of them have cultural references. Sydney is kind of here right now… will she be in two years? I dunno. I think that’s the difference of where people say it will seem dated. If she doesn’t have a lasting impact in movies, her cameo would stand out in the future

Fashion trends are cyclical, It would only be dated for a certain amount of time and then relevant again But also, this is a film about people in the fashion industry, not about current fashion, so the story itself won’t be dated by the fashion, it’ll be dated if the fashion employment industry makes a radical shift How is the first one dated? Is cerulean blue now wanted for war crimes?

Maybe it’s just because I’m not particularly into fashion, but rewatching the film last week the most obviously dated aspect felt like the technology/workflows used. Early pre-iPhone Smartphones, lots of things being done on paper, photography rooms that used actual film, etc The biggest cultural reference that felt dated was the subplot about getting the new Harry Potter, which to be fair would probably have aged far less weirdly had Rowling not…well, been Rowling. Nothing you could have foreseen about that. Shoving the likes of Sydney Sweeney in the sequel would have been a massive mistake that instantly placed it in a very specific time window where(politics aside) she was fairly obviously something of a Flavor of the Month celebrity. It would have just been a bizarre decision. Not that I’m convinced this is going to be a great movie to start with, but still a bullet dodged is a bullet dodged.

she’s also the face of a luxury makeup brand whose name is escaping me rn. i think? it was armani? anyways i worked at sephora and literally had to see her in three sections of the store. the worst part is kerastase and laneige have great products. she was a detriment to them in my book but most people not chronically online truly don’t care.

That’s another thing that bothered me about the movie. You’re an ex-con trying to get a job you NEED as a housemaid and nanny, but you wear very scant clothing and your chest is out in almost every outfit. Like I get why the director (and SS since she was a producer) made that choice but it made no sense for the actual story.

Chalamet seems to be a bit arrogant per some interviews, but he is at least a genuinely talented actor. Can’t say the same for SS

Timothee definitely seems a bit stuck up his own ass but at the very least I think he’s leagues above Sydney in terms of acting
