The movie gets such ridiculous tonal shift in the final act you can tell when the cocaine kicked in the writers' room.

If you knew anything about real police work you would be well aware that most cases end with the cops driving an suv covered with chain guns into the perp’s base. It’s crime investigation 101

The writer of this movie spoke to my film class in 2004 and I remember him saying the movie is barely his script anymore. Was unfortunately a studio-driven tonal shift, not a fun, drug-induced writing session lol.

Why not both?

AmigoDelDiabla Mar 24, 2026 +2
Because Hollywood studio execs *definitely* didn't do cocaine in the 80s. Duh.

The suicide by cop explanation is gold: [https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/10i8j18/tango\_cash\_is\_the\_story\_of\_the\_worlds\_most/](https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/10i8j18/tango_cash_is_the_story_of_the_worlds_most/)

In an 80s action film, it was mandatory that they visit a strip club at least once during an investigation
39
fatbob42 Mar 22, 2026 +15
Except there’s no stripping in this strip club. It’s a club where people go to watch dance performances with drumming (and cheer wildly).

You’re right. I forgot what a classy, upscale movie this is

This movie was out of its mind and it still f****** rules. Sly and Russell high fiving over Teri Hatcher at the end was so funny to me.

I like this movie too. It’s fun.

Cutting out the escape where Russell dresses in drag should be a crime.

The scene in Fringe where Walter fires up Only You in the broken down cab in a world where music doesn’t really exist anymore hits so hard. https://youtu.be/DybrM4CSNy4?si=0hv5BIf7mAQvk0al

Upstairs at Eric's is lowkey a masterpiece. Midnight and In My Room are my two favorite tracks.

Fun movie fact: a lot of Tango and Cash is filmed in the same location (Mansfield, OH) as Shawshank Redemption. (same prison too)

Young Terri Hatcher was in a whole league of her own!

This move is if someone took the 80's and distilled it into its pure essence

This movie is awesome, and worth the watch just to see Kurt Russel in drag

LMurtaugh Mar 21, 2026 +8
Well, kudos to the dancing double nailing the performance.

The 80s was such an awesome time, 90s not as good but still great, then post 2000s was like wth, and been bobsledding down ever since. I miss the glam Barbizon look of the 80s, plastic surgery wasn't as rampant.

kg005 Mar 21, 2026 +17
Could have just said you missed cocaine

I never did booger sugar. I got enough issues just staying alive.

MisterDings Mar 21, 2026 +6
Sometimes it makes you think, I may as well have just added the sugar to this black coffee.

90s was better than the 80s - mainly because I was old enough to enjoy it properly more - but you’re right about the shitshow since

I actually lived in the building that the rooftop scene was filmed for a year or so when I was in college. Park Plaza Hotel directly across the street from MacArthur Park. We used to party on the rooftop all the time, back stairs went right up to it. Lots of film sets there.

sprietsma Mar 21, 2026 +3
I still can’t believe this was directed by a Tarkovsky collaborator (he co-wrote Andrei Rublev!)

I saw this movie on TV in the early 90s and recorded it in my VCR. Loved it. Probably watched it 20 times back in the day.

I didn't like the movie at all. No point to it, is what I said while watching it with my buddy. A complete waste of my time. I'm glad it's on reddit. I finally got to complain about the movie again
