A Mexican teenager has died while in ICE custody in South Florida. At least 36 people have died in ICE custody since January 2025, according to ICE. He appears to be the youngest person to die in ICE custody since the start of Trump's second term.

Yes, but American law enforcement does not get prosecuted at the same level everyone else is. When in reality the fact they as an authority figure committing a crime should be even more serious because it's an abuse of office/power. Enough people are okay with it that it doesn't change. I mean shit a dude got slowly asphyxiated by a cop over the course of nine minutes, on video, while begging for his life, and people had to burn down a police station to get anyone to arrest him. And for a very long time and probably still people sided with the cop and said he didn't do anything wrong.

More people died in ICE custody in 2025 alone than in the entire history of ICE prior to 2025 combined. If that puts it into perspective for you. I don’t know the exact number in just 2025 but there were a ton of articles showing the figures towards the end of last year. Should be easy to search since it’s a public reporting agency, I just wouldn’t trust the cause of death for any since 2025.

Look into the claims about how these camps are being run. Feeding inmates moldy food, over cramping cells by sometimes three times the design spec, ignoring request for medical treatment, many have claims of borderline torture from guards. They’re concentration camps specifically designed to instill fear in the prisoners. That way when they’re released they spread the message so that others decide not to come to the US.

There was one guy who showed up in a Minneapolis hospital with a fractured skull, beaten up by ICE agents, and they said he "fell." They also don't treat appendicitis. They give you Tylenol. That's what was said about the detention camp where Liam Conejo Ramos was until a judge saved him.

Also, these are not "Police Officers". These people have no academy training, de-escalation training, they're took no oath to "Protect and Serve" they're hired mercenaries with explicit orders to not identify themselves (not what police do) tasked with carrying out constitution-breaking actions on American citizens. I hate to make the comparison but it's a lot more akin to how gestapo treated non-jews that were black/gay/sympathizers. Media always uses euphemism. Mainly because they want to protect themselves or can simply not prove what happened. When it comes to police violence you can see the media saying "were killed" only when several cameras filmed the scene from different angles. And even then they sometimes still use a more passive form. I do not take this lightly and find it absolutely repulsive. It's hard to believe around 40 people in custody were killed in a few months. Sorry if my reply was too direct.

You're right of course, and this is tradition in journalism going back a long ways, however I'm cynical and I think today it has a lot more to do with manipulating the narrative than it does with journalistic ethics and the integrity of the news. They sprinkle in juuust enough doubt and obscure just enough of the facts, they dilute the narrative and even redefine the meanings of certain words all to support whatever agenda the guy in the big office wants them to push. Not all outlets but most of them anymore.

Some of them do, people still get heart attacks and aneurysms and anything else that just makes people drop dead unexpectedly. These can't really be avoided. Then there's the completely preventable deaths from medical neglect - people who don't get their meds or have some harmless acute condition that is left untreated until it's life-threatening. Some deaths are suicides because being ripped from your life, detained under shitty conditions and eventually being deported is just bleak. Then there's the deaths from assault and murder. There have been several cases that are pretty clear.

According to google, ICE has ~70000 in custody at any one time which is about the same population as Grand Junction, CO. With the current US death rate > 9 people/thousand/year, 36 is a small number. (it's so much smaller than you'd expect from a population that size that it might be under-stated even if you believed the detained population's healthier than the US population) > How do people die in policy custody? Our local medical examiner publishes a daily decedents report that includes causes of death. When the occasional county jail inmate shows up, their COD is as varied and mundane as anyone else.

The most surprising thing about this is that it's not Dilley. Just finished seeing videos of a hearing about babies they're sending to doctors who are then treated for multiple illnesses and infections, sent back to ICE where ICE refuses to give them the medication, etc. I honestly don't know how anyone can see a single video related to what is going on in these places and not be radicalized. Anyone I know who still doesn't think this is a problem won't even look into it. This whole thing is so angering. Another stain we can never wash off in this country.

I wonder what the rate of death in ICE facilities compared to the "normal" prison system. Any deaths is awful, but there seems to be a lot of negligent deaths coming out of ICE facilities
