The bombs didn't go off, which is the only reason we're not talking about a mass casualty event in Manhattan right now, TATP packed into an energy drink can thrown into a crowd. Thats not a prank gone wrong but the same explosive used in the London bombings and pure luck that nobody died.

TheFrenchSavage 2 days ago +1400
Yeah, TATP is super unstable, it will go off after kinetic shock, friction, heat, static... basically don't be around it and don't touch it.

They probably fucked up making TATP if it didn't go off lol

Luckily a lot of would be terrorists are stupid.
129
KDR_11k 1 day ago +32
And usually guided by the FBI. Most caught terrorists would just be a group of slobs sitting around and grumbling about vague issues if it wasn't for the FBI coming in to provide them with a plan and materials to pull their plan off. Of course the FBI doesn't let the plan actually succeed but they do boost their arrest rates by basically raising people into terrorism.

'usually' is hyperbole. It definitely happens, but it's not anywhere near a majority.
16
Nightcat666 1 day ago +29
Im sorry but I get annoyed plenty about things the government does but if someone came up to me with a bomb and a plan I wouldn't do it. If lack of materials is all it takes from these people being mass murders than maybe they shouldn't be in society.
29
thisshitsstupid 1 day ago +11
Thats probably why they do it. If all it takes is a little nudging by internet strangers to do this shit, be the internet stranger. And teach them incorrectly. And then put their dumb asses in prison forever for trying.
11
Calvins8 1 day ago +2
Eh plenty of cases where the "terrorist" did not want to follow through with violence and they were convinced by the undercover agent. Many of these people need help for sure but it's not like the agent only provided a means and a plan.

You can buy 99+% acetone at any hardware store in New York super easily and cheaply. High test hydrogen peroxide is harder to come by, though my local hardware store in NY carries 30% hydrogen peroxide in 5 gallon jugs for very c****, so it's still not too hard to get.

Would be a very long list if every person with a passing interest in potentially hazardous chemicals is logged. Though I'm probably on there for looking up several ways to legally order benzaldehyde and thionyl chloride for my research group (swear on my dead grandpas that I'm not trying to cook meth, I'm not that financially desperate yet)

These morons are lucky enough that the bombs didn’t go off while making them. In school, many years ago when there wasn’t much restriction on acquiring source chemicals, a friend of mine lost half his hand from TATP going off during synthesis. Writing hand, on top of that. Ended up with two months off sick and some trouble with the law as well.
267
gonewild9676 2 days ago +228
The rumor back in the day was that the CIA wrote the Anarchist Cookbook because the processes were so unsafe that unskilled people following them would off themselves. But then back in the day you could buy dynamite at rural hardware stores. It was used to take out stumps and privet.
228
AllAboutTheData 2 days ago +65
Dynamite doesn't kill privet. The blast merely helps the stuff to spread.
65
gonewild9676 2 days ago +34
Probably. But I'm sure it looks good doing it.
34
wrosecrans 1 day ago +7
If you are a dynamite salesman, that's a feature not a bug. Oh, you still have that problem, maybe even moreso? You should buy more dynamite this time.

a8bmiles 2 days ago +52
Yeah was wild listening to old man stories when I was a kid in the 80s, about how when _they_ were kids they could buy gunpowder by the pound at the hardware store as long as they were able to reach the counter, which for the guy telling this story was about age 8. Him and his buddies got into all sorts of trouble, but nobody got hurt so nothing changed.
52
TheShadowKick 2 days ago +48
Well, people did get hurt and things did change. That's why you can't do that anymore.
48
KofOaks 2 days ago +9
Honestly I was a kid in the 80s and we could buy Potassium nitrate and sulphur over the counter at the drug store, among a bunch of other things you'd never find now.
9

Yeah. I was into weird chemistry, including fireworks, and bought loads of illicit stuff from the p*******. Was even con-founded by the availability when I was a kid.
2
PassiveMenis88M 2 days ago +40
Not a rumor, though you've got it a little twisted. The Anarchist Cookbook is real and had real recipes in it that worked. What got spread on the internet was rewritten by the Cia.
40
gonewild9676 2 days ago +17
Did the original one have safety information as well? I had a college chemistry teacher who said a lot of what he read would work but he wouldn't do it without a chemical vent hood.
17
PassiveMenis88M 2 days ago +15
Basic safety, I believe the author expected the chemicals to be handled by chemists.

sasha_the_impaler 2 days ago +24
I mean I'm sure people would've gotten fucked up but you need shrapnel. The explosive just propels the shrapnel. A soda can isn't creating a whole lot of shrapnel. It was going to fail no matter what because the entire setup was bad. Not to dismiss that people could've been seriously burned or that even a soda can can still create a small amount of lethal shrapnel but luckily it was never going to be some massive casualty event. Lives were saved, but we don't need to overstate what this attack was. It was poorly planned start to finish. Edit: someone tells me the jar of nails was actually the real bomb. I recall there being like four different conflicting stories that the bomb was a pipe, a can, a jar, and a soda bottle. I've seen like 20 different photos. The jar was by far the most lethal. That was a really dangerous bomb and that was a really lucky day if so.
24
Riichi-stick 2 days ago +107
Idk why it says soda can in this thread, the photos showed smoking jars of nails and scrap
107
sasha_the_impaler 2 days ago +35
I have heard like four different versions of this complete with photos of different bombs, with even credible news websites saying different things with different photos. But I guess I should've checked myself the can was what was settled on. Was the jar of nails confirmed? Because that was a real, lethal bomb with like double the explosive lol that thing would create a mass casualty event for sure.
35
AuroraFinem 2 days ago +21
Even if it’s a can with no shrapnel, TATP tossed into a crowed is very likely to be lethal to the immediate vicinity due to the blast and the can will shatter into extremely thin extremely sharp shreds of aluminum and act as its own shrapnel. If you’ve ever cut an aluminum can, it is razor sharp because the aluminum is optimized to be as thin as possible to save manufacturing and transportation costs, and it’s not going to break into big chunks during an internal explosion with that much force. The cans are designed to be strong in tension so they don’t break due to the carbonation pressures or if dropped short distances/shaken, so the can would allow a good amount of pressure build up before failing making it shatter into smaller pieces when it ultimately fails. What container it was in or if it had shrapnel really shouldn’t matter at all here anyways though. They deserve life for conspiracy to commit terrorism alone, how smart or successful they were in doing so is entirely irrelevant.
21
sasha_the_impaler 2 days ago +5
We're getting a bit too gritty here for hypotheticals but I think you would need people huddled closer for more than one or two people to be injured beyond minor injuries if you just packed TATP into a soda can and rigged it to explode. It would be a really, really bad day for those two people though. I don't agree it would shred to pieces unless they somehow got it sealed really, really well. Carbonation in soda doesn't create that much pressure lol. There's a science experiment where you pull the carbon dioxide out of soda and push it back into the soda using your hands and an airtight pump, it's only a few pounds of force. The explosive would probably just blow the top off at and shred it outward since a can with weak points along the top and bottom is not really a good bomb vessel. A lot of engineering goes into the manner bombs explode lol.

I checked and you're right it seems it was glass jar of pain and death. But now I'm mad at the news for somehow misleading so many of us this bad. I saw the glass jar one shared around and wrote it off because if you throw a glass jar it breaks and the news was talking about a pipe or a large can. Probably CNN

sasha_the_impaler 2 days ago +8
I mean would you rather be deaf or dead? Those are two wildly different extremes my friend.
8
accidental_superman 2 days ago +19
No you don't need shrapnel to kill with explosives, the over pressure can do that alone. Soldiers have died without a scratch on them, but the damage is internally. https://safety.army.mil/MEDIA/Risk-Management-Magazine/ArtMID/7428/ArticleID/7993/Blast-Overpressure-An-Invisible-Threat
19
sasha_the_impaler 2 days ago +18
A soda can of TATP is not going to create a significant amount of overpressure to cause a mass casualty event across an entire crowd. Maybe if it exploded next to someone's head. That is not very much explosive.

>The FBI says that a suspect in the arson fire at a historic Mississippi synagogue admitted to targeting the institution **because of its “Jewish ties”.** A synagogue with Jewish ties. Well that's a genius right there. The synagogue had survived bombing by the KKK, but sadly not a 19 year old (alleged) arsonist with brain rot. >It was the site of a Ku Klux Klan bombing in 1967 – a response to the congregation’s role in civil rights activities, according to the Institute of Southern Jewish Life, which also houses its office in the building. I mean in the end are these guys really much different from any of the other mass shooters and killers we get? Kinda goes for all these 16-21 year old domestic terrorists. The white atheist and Christian mass shooters just believe in one form of nihilism while the Muslim bombers instead opt for the extremist Islam death cult version of nihilism that gets distorted even further when it's under the context of growing up in America. Seems to stick with the trend that we're being killed by brainrotted chronically online young people who got themselves radicalized for the meme, usually online.

This is why I keep arguing that the focus on c*** like "gun violence" is stupid. The problem is *violence*, and people's willingness to commit it. Doesn't matter what method people use to do violence, just matters that they do it.

The gun is a fair f****** bit more dangerous than a knife. You're so, so much more likely to survive a knife attack, and a mass stabbing is very hard to do.
31
Murrabbit 2 days ago +11
> Doesn't matter what method people use to do violence Hard disagree on this one, method determines efficacy, and I'd much rather see lower body counts if we have to put up with any at all. I'm glad for instance that the bomb throwers in OP's link didn't actually have access to high quality explosives, and instead tossed a few duds.
11
snorlz 2 days ago +5
obviously. but violence is not something you can fully address with laws or even culture change. its engrained in humans - pretty much all animals really. go out to the bars on a friday night and im sure youll find many people willing to commit violence. its not a realistic goal > Doesn't matter what method people use to do violence, just matters that they do it. turns out, the method DOES matter. a lot. a slap in the face vs a nuke is pretty obviously not equal methods of violence. the focus on gun violence is cause guns amplify the ease and scale of violence a single person can cause and there are no use cases for them outside killing something. its also realistically addressable with laws as guns are physical objects, not thoughts
5

How many articles have been published that make it sound like the bombers were on the anti-Mamdani side?

Rugby562 2 days ago +173
Don't even need articles for that, Mamdani's own tweet phrased it that way too.

I mean, maybe they thought they were on Mamdani's side, but he's not on their side.

Well said, and that's undeniably true..... But, arguably, he still seemed to position himself as the intended victim of the attempted bombing — thus passively allowing the would-be-bombers to appear aligned with the protestors. At best, it's a clumsy failure of communication that could've been phrased more effectively...... However it does seem pretty deliberate, which doesn't exactly reflect well on him and his political image...... ...And I say that as somebody who is very happy that he's the mayor of NYC, and who doesn't buy into any of the Islamophobic trash trying to characterize the man as a radical jihadist.

Mamdani implied it himself. Horrible look all around

ntsp00 2 days ago +13
Where did he imply that?
13
Squidchop 2 days ago +104
He didn’t. He said that the anti-muslim protesters were bad and then said that the bombers were worse but some people weren’t satisfied with that or just want something to nitpick about Mamdani
104
therealchappy24 2 days ago +94
He didn’t actually mention the affiliation of the bombers in his tweet at all. He condemned white supremacists like Lang (rightfully so) and went right into saying that violence at protests is unacceptable without mentioning that it was the white supremacists being targeted with that violence

ncolaros 2 days ago +3
Sorry, did you specifically want him to call them white supremicists? Because I think he actually did them a favor. To be clear, you wanted Mamdani to say, out loud, "Two guys tried to kill a bunch of white supremicists, and I for one, won't stand for it!" He said they threw the can at the protest and tried to commit an act of terrorism. What more do you want?

He could call them what they are ... islamic terrorists.

I for one do not want my leaders declaring anything of the sort before a trial. Now THAT would be a bad look. In fact, there is a very recent example of just how bad it can look.

This is the same kind of bullshit purity testing people used to drag Obama for. “Well he called it a terrorist attack but since he didn’t call it a MUSLIM terrorist attack, he must me sympathetic!” It was f****** stupid then and it’s f****** stupid now. He condemned it. He said terrorism is bad.

Dude, if Mamdani can start his whole tweet by throwing around the label of white supremicist for the potential victims than he can also call Islamic terrorism by name. When the police recently arrested an individual for plotting to bomb that Palestinian activist he had no problem spelling out the full name of the Jewish Defense League. Not to mention, he somehow refrained from attacking the potential victim in that statement.

therealchappy24 2 days ago +2
He did rightfully call them hateful bigots. Clarifying that throwing bombs, even at shitty people protesting for shitty reasons, is bad is better than failing to separate those shitty people from the act of political violence that was taken against them. Again, he was much more clear about this in the press conference than the tweet which I was mostly referencing. I’ve already edited my original comment to say that as well.

>Yesterday, white supremacist Jake Lang organized a protest outside Gracie Mansion rooted in bigotry and racism. Such hate has no place in New York City. It is an affront to our city’s values and the unity that defines who we are. >What followed was even more disturbing. Violence at a protest is never acceptable. The attempt to use an explosive device and hurt others is not only criminal, it is reprehensible and the antithesis of who we are. Seriously, read that comment and tell me it doesn't imply Lang was responsible.

Source? The [transcript](https://www.rev.com/transcripts/mamdani-press-conference-after-protesters-attacked) of the press conference is evidence Mamdani stated the exact opposite of what you're claiming: > I will defend that right every day that I am mayor even when those protesting say things that I abhor. Let me also be clear about something else. New York City will never tolerate violence, whether from protests or counter protests. Many of the counter protestors met this display of bigotry peacefully with a vision of a city that is welcoming to all. But a few did not. Two men, Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, traveled from Pennsylvania and attempted to bring violence to New York City. They are suspected of coming here to commit an act of terrorism. There is video of these two individuals throwing two devices towards the protest. The police department has determined that these were improvised explosive devices made to injure, maim, or worse. Thanks to the swift and decisive actions of NYPD officers at the scene, both men were immediately taken into custody and the devices they brought taken off of our streets.

Mamdani supporting terrorists…  But they support the Islamic state… ‘ While being taken to the police precinct, Balat allegedly said: “This isn’t a religion that just stands when people talk bad about … our prophet. We take action! We take action! “If I don’t do it, someone else will come and do it,” he is also accused of saying. Balat allegedly waived his right to stay silent. At the precinct, he purportedly wrote on a piece of paper: “All praise is due to Allah lord of all worlds! I pledge my allegience [sic] to the Islamic State. Die in your rage yu [sic] kuffar! Emir B.” ’

The intent was not to kill people protesting Mamdani.  Their stated intent was to kill anti-muslim people who happened to be protesting Mamdani.  It was just a convenient gathering of their targets.

News articles need to stop calling 19 year olds "teens", they are legal adults and are intentionally trying to make you think they are children.

Well as someone who tries to not follow this bullshit too closely, this is different than the initial reports of far right bigots, white supremecist, racist ideology.... The news report from CNN was that two nice pennsylvania boys lives changed. Others said not to let this detract from far right danger, but at the same time the media purposefully obscured their own radical ideology and multiple news outlets ran with the fact it was rooted in islamophobia

What are you talking about lol. First time hearing about this and the only reference to anti Islam in any of the initial reports from early March is that the attackers were related to isis, targeting anti-Islam protestors.

He's talking about a now deleted CNN tweet that was talking about the incident and began with >Two Pennsylvania teenagers crossed into New York City Saturday morning for what could’ve been a normal day enjoying the city during abnormally warm weather. But in less than an hour, their lives would drastically change as the pair would be arrested for throwing homemade bombs during an anti-Muslim protest outside of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s home. They had the same text in an article as well, but were forced to change it >[EDITOR’S NOTE: A previous version of this story included a summary that does not reflect the gravity of the incident, thereby breaching the editorial standards we require for all our reporting. It therefore has been changed.](https://www.cnn.com/2026/03/10/us/mamdani-gracie-mansion-protest-what-we-know)

Just look at the headline, it heavily points towards the bombing target being Mamdani instead of the real target being the protestors in the street.
