TIL there are synagogues and an active jewish presence in Iran. I guess I should have realized it but that definitely contextualizes a lot for me

Iran’s Jewish population, one of the world's oldest, dropped from roughly 100,000 in 1948–1979 to approximately 8,000–10,000 today. The population saw a massive exodus following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, with over 90% fleeing to the US, Israel, and Europe due to fears of persecution, though a small, protected community remains, primarily in Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz.

[In a video statement carried by IRIB News, Homayoun Sameh, the Jewish representative in the Majles (Iranian parliament), said the strike had hit “one of our ancient and holy synagogues” during the Jewish holiday of Passover.](https://www.jpost.com/middle-east/iran-news/article-892314).

Maybe you should tell the IDF since the Jerusalem post is reporting them, saying it was accidental collateral damage  https://www.timesofisrael.com/iran-claims-tehran-synagogue-badly-damaged-in-israeli-airstrike-israeli-official-we-dont-target-synagogues/amp/

Being a jew in Iran is wild, they still have markets where if a vendor sees a jew they will not let them touch the merchandise and if they do they are forced to buy it because the touch is unclean... It's not all sellers mind you but it creates bizarre situations where you can't touch the fruit to test for ripeness but everyone else can. Edit - Source - [https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-11-iran-is-imploding-a-conversation-with/id1794590850?i=1000705298652](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-11-iran-is-imploding-a-conversation-with/id1794590850?i=1000705298652) 32 minutes in, Conversation with an Iranian jew, Absolutely fascinating interview in its whole but that's the source from a person who has experienced it and talked to others jews who have also. For more fun facts - Iranian Jews have faced complex and alternating periods of tolerance and severe persecution over their 2,700-year history in Persia. Historically, and in some conservative interpretations of Shi'a Islam, they have been viewed as ritually unclean ( najes). While they are a constitutionally recognized religious minority in modern Iran, they face institutionalized discrimination and, post-1979, live under a regime that tightly controls their public expressions of identity. Historically: **Physical Restrictions:** Under various, particularly Safavid, rulers, these beliefs were codified into discriminatory practices: * **Rain/Snow Regulations:** Jews were sometimes forbidden from leaving their homes on rainy days for fear that the "impurity" would wash off them and onto a Muslim. * **Market Restrictions:** Jews were forbidden from touching produce, fruit, or goods at market stalls, as Muslims would refuse to purchase "contaminated" goods. * **Separation:** Jews were forced to live in segregated parts of town (mahaleh) and often faced violence in the streets, such as being pelted with dirt. * **Social Deference:** Jewish homes and doors were required to be lower than those of Muslims, and they were often forced to wear distinctive clothing or badges. Today: **The "Najes" View Today:** The late Ayatollah Khomeini and some contemporary hardliners have officially referred to non-Muslims as ritually unclean. While this is not always applied in daily life by all Iranians, it constitutes a state-supported framework for discrimination.

from the article itself: >Judaism is one of Iran's legally recognized minority religions, beside Sunni Islam, Zoroastrianism, and Christianity, with each represented in parliament.

My grandmother and her family were forced out of Iran back in the late 70s. Luckily they had Israel to flee to when all the neighboring Arab countries were forcibly removing their Jewish populations

Actually more tolerant than Saudi Arabia (one of Iran's main enemies and a Sunni theocracy tho allied with Israel): "Foreigners attempting to acquire Saudi Arabian nationality must either already be Muslim or convert to Islam.[14] Proselytizing/promotion of any non-Islamic religion is forbidden per a 2022 law.[1]" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Saudi_Arabia

I wouldn't doubt it.

Same as in the "jewish state" No proselytizing...and no Christian or Muslim immigrants..

what are you basing this on? I've never heard that in my life.

Popolitique 3 days ago +22
Why would you, unless you were knowledgeable about Jewish life in Iran. Religious Shia Muslims are very heavy on purity and Jews are unclean to them.
22
FirstBabyChancellor 3 days ago -7
This is categorically untrue because Shia jurisprudence across the board maintains that People of the Book (Jews and Christians) are ritually pure.

Popolitique 3 days ago +11
What is said and what is done are two different things.
11
IOnlyFearOFGod 3 days ago +3
if the religion says one thing and the believers does the other. Who is to blame? One can't just say "what is said and what is done are two different things" Cause you blamed the religion at first and when u/Firstbabychancellor replied that in Shia jurisprudence, it is maintained that Jews and Christians are pure, you replied with this! You have to decide, who to blame.
3
Popolitique 3 days ago +3
I was careful to say religious Shia Muslims and not Shia Islam. Religions were made by men, what matters is how they are practiced not what they say. You can see it plainly in Christianism where the message of Christ is very different from what the Church did across centuries. It's the same in Shia Islam, it may say Jews and Christians are pure (which is still debatable) there is lots of litterature about they were treated as impure in Iran. There is no one to blame, that's just how things was. It was a different time.

IOnlyFearOFGod 2 days ago +2
As long as you make it clear the distinction, then it is alright. Because i find many people confusing the religion and the believers, cause some things are cultural while other things are religious. Christians and jews being Impure is NOT religion but culture. Though it is fair to say that it was affected by religion in some way or another. Well, either way i have gotten my answer, thank you for explaining and clarifying, have a good day. Sincerely.

So your "facts" are sourced to a "podcast" run by a jewish IDF spokesperson (Dr. Sharona Mazalian Levi)? LOL

Yes, I can find you interviews with jews who have experienced it and interviews with Iranians who have experienced it. Check my original comment updated with sources.

It would be a weird thing to make up would it not? I know it sounds like some regressive medieval treatment but alas it does survive until modernity. I have updated my comment with sources and its worth noting you could of just googled it for the basics. I do encourage you to listen to the interview.

I don't trust anything the Iranian media says. I wouldn't be surprised if the IRGC blew up the synagogue just so they can blame it on Israel.

Negative-Dot-7680 3 days ago +16
IDF has commented about it. >The Israel Defense Forces admitted it was behind a Tuesday strike that damaged a synagogue in Tehran, saying it was targeting a senior Iranian commander and that it regretted the “collateral damage” to the Jewish house of worship nearby. Very interesting. The IDF initially snarkily said that they didn't this morning.

Ok, so it was justified. I blame the IRGC for having a commander in civilian areas. Military personnel should be in their bases or in the field, not in cities and not near houses of worship.
