The actual research on stretching before exercise

Static stretching before exercise has been shown to temporarily reduce power output. Dynamic warmup is superior for preparing for exercise. Static stretching after exercise or as a standalone session is fine and beneficial. The thing people do before exercise is usually the least effective version of stretching.
