That opening made me weirdly tense over dirt and shovels. Rewatching with subtitles actually makes the little background lines way funnier and creepier.

If you actually watch the show, they get into some of the nitty gritty of the reason for the food shortages and IMO play both sides quite well.
One of the reasons they state in the show is that the USSR was behind in technology, and simply the transfer of food allowed for spoilage before it would get to its destination.
The show is pretty balanced when it comes to the critiques of capitalism and communism.

Best show ever IMO.
One of the few id totally be down for a reboot / story continuity.

IDK who downvoted you but The Americans is fantastic. I never really figured out why it didn't catch on more than it did. I have a feeling it had something to do with being on FX at a time when FX produced a lot of cheesier shows.
If it got the attention it deserved, The Americans would be discussed alongside shows like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Homeland, etc.

It was more of a slow burn (ESPECIALLY season 5) in an action-oriented era.

Maybe downvoted because of the suggestion it should be rebooted. I mean, I'm keen to know more about the recently greenlit South Korean version, but as for a reboot of the American one? No thanks. You can't beat perfection. (to add, I did not downvote)

It feels a little too prescient trying to make us sympathize with Russian spies now.

I'm not sure the show ever tried to make you sympathize with them. It made it quite clear they were cold hearted killers who would happily f*** up innocent people's lives for their aims. Look at Martha.

I’m just completing a rewatch and it’s even better. It’s very much a slowburn character study for much of the time, and it’s just magnificently well done with compelling and realistic writing, and the acting is top class. There are obviously moments of great espionage related tension and action but I always think of it as a relationship/centred show first and foremost.

I was really disappointed in it because of how much people here hyped it up. It was good, but I kept expecting more from it because of comments like these.

Maybe not your speed but Disney Intl (led by a former FX exec) is making a Korean version where “Phil” and “Liz” are North Korean spies.
I’ll likely check it out just for the novelty of it.

A story continuation built around an adult Henry would be fantastic, tbh.
A young up-and-comer in the US government, who can’t get ahead because he was born to illegal Russian spies — something only he and the upper brass of the system he works for knows about — while navigating a complicated relationship with his estranged sister that participated in the spycraft but left in the final hour. All while being mentored by his parents former best friend and the man that ultimately allowed them to escape. All set around the time the Cold War ends and his parents are able to reach out to him once again.
Plenty to work with there.

Honestly, I'd like to see the fall of the Soviet Union and the takeover by oligarchs through the eyes of Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys.

Matthew Rhys said in an interview once that he pitched the idea to the producers that Page would end up becoming a spy and infiltrate the US government by becoming a white house staff member, and to hide her identity, she changed her name to Monica Lewinsky. The producers didn't want to go for it.

In fairness to the producers, that's not a very good pitch.

It’s solid but never really goes to the places the story could have/should have gone, ran the characters in circles more than developing them, and ended a season too early.

The fourth season was a chore. Too much table-setting. I'd argue it needed one season less.

TheChrisLambertApr 2, 2026
Where it finally ends just wasn’t the place it should have ended. They needed another season, at least another episode, of showing what it’s like where they are, for the full effect

It really was one of the best shows of all time. I very thoroughly enjoyed it and it is due for a rewatch.

Super underrated. It should be talked about in the same breath as a lot of the other big prestige shows around the time like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, etc, but seems like not enough ppl watched it. I just finished a rewatch of it for the first time since it aired, and it’s even better than what I remember

More like the H in America. Everyone else is able to allow for all the corporate greed and pursuit of profit one could ask for, but isn’t dumb enough to not address a basic human need.

An actual hot take for once. Couldn’t disagree more though. The show was amazing all the way through, and as someone else mentioned, the finale comes up all the time in discussions of all-time greats.

I've never heard someone say this before. The Americans is often one of the first shows mentioned when people are asking about shows with the best series finale.
