Despite a slow start, The Audacity, starring Billy Magnussen and Sarah Goldberg, picks up steam thanks to strong performances and an intriguing plot.

They made a show about the open source audio software?

I agree with the headline. I thought the first episode was mediocre, but the second one hooked me. I wouldn't compare it to Silicon Valley, it's not a sitcom. It reminds me of Barry the most, not just because of Sarah Goldberg, but it has a similar tone with its dark comedy and everyone is so neurotic. I think it has potential and will keep watching.

My main issue is this show hasn't said anything really new. We have already seen most of it under different circumstances and in different packages. Will it grow on me? I don't know, it depends on a storyline. However its IMDB score is grossly underrated. It's not a 4.9/10 show, no way, Jose. I would say it's 7/10, maybe 6.5/10, at least for now. There have been much worse shows in a last few years.

I can't understand why people are saying the show isn't saying anything new. Either that or they compare it to silicon valley and find it to be an inferior show. It is subjective , but the two most frequently repeated criticisms are at odds with one another. Imo, the way to approach this show is to view it as art. It's far more a drama than a comedy. If you expect to laugh, you will be disappointed. If you think the show is recycling old material, then you should consider how wildly different this show is to it's oft cited predecessor, silicon valley. In a time where the people being skewered by the narrative are trying to/have nearly succeeded at dominating the media landscape. Hell bent on sane-washing their sociopathic personalities and suppressing reporting on their various crimes against humanity. A show like this is treading a fine line where too close a comparison to any one individual could lead to furious backlash from unimaginably powerful interests. The "oligarchy" has portrayed themselves as heroes and saviors without whom all would perish. But here we see the frailty, insecurity , and disregard for morality pervading the ranks of the most powerful people on earth. And in a way that could convince even the most passionate billionaire worshippers that they might have the wrong idea. To many it may be preaching to the choir. And among them, many might seek the gratification of seeing the villain experience consequences. But what I truly love about this show is the portrayal of the characters as human, not loveable or redeemable, or anti-heroes. Simply succeptible to the same social pressures as the rest of us, and unable to cope with the gargantuan weight of money and power that wasn't conceivable ten or twenty years ago. Not that they are neuro- divergent, or built differently, or special in any way. I think Dr. Gary saying that they deserve help as much as anyone else was the perfect moment for me. Can you blame them? And I think if you read between the lines you get the message that billionaires shouldn't existe. It's even harmful for them. Nobody wins .. Anyway I wanted to rant on this since seeing the show and reading so many unkind reviews. Maybe it will convince someone to give it another chance or view it in a different light. The show is punk af. Love it.

Completely different shows

Well, not completely. Vibes are a bit similar. Silicon Valley had better jokes though, but writing became repetitive, every season had the same scheme. The show seemed to break the loop in season 5, and the returned to it in the final season. The Audacity has the better cast, I like performances more.

Vibes are not similar at all, if you’ve seen the first two episodes of The Audacity

Well, like rich insecure a****** men-children from Silicon Valley are in the weird and cringe social situations, because they are insecure a****** men-children and they also define how the world looks? I don't know, it's not the same obviously, but both shows have that cringe satiric vibe for me. The Audacity is more dramatic and has more characters and storylines, of course, including one about high school teenagers, yay.

Satiric, yes. Cringe, not really. I think you’ll find the storylines on the audacity to be way less goofy. To be transparent, I worked on this show so I’ve seen the whole season. Keep watching! It gets really good.

Well, it is cringe, like the comedy of Tim Robinson is cringe, but it happens for different reasons, of course. It's cringe, because the characters are cringe, because their real life prototypes are cringe. Have you seen Elon Musk? Bezos? Gates? Let alone all those less rich and famous people in the Valley? Alas, this is what we have to deal with, and by "we" I mean humanity.

The people who made Succession are producing this.

And do you mean specifically Jonathan Glazer by "the people?" Well, yeah, the showrunner of The Audacity wrote one episode in season 1 and one episode in season 2 of Succession, he also was a supervising producer in seasons 1 and 2. and he didn't work on season 3 and 4. I wouldn't call it "made Succession." There are more than a dozen of writers and a few dozens of producers who made more of Succession. The guy used to be a part of the crew in the first half of the show before COVID. He also wrote two episodes of Better Call Saul and had some producerial role in 2016 and 2017. You could write "The people who made Better Call Saul are producing this." And he did some other things.

That’s not exactly how TV writing works though. You get screen credit for the episodes you yourself wrote but the writers room gives input and storyline ideas for every episode. All of their hands touch all of the episodes.

Potentially. We don't know the inside mechanic of every episode, only member of the writing room (and maybe some other members of the cast and crew) do. Anyway he seemed to leave Succession after season 2 altogether, and there are 13 writers having more credits for Succession.

Sure, we can’t know what we can’t know. I’m just pointing out that the implication that he had little to do with the show because he had writing credits on only 2 episodes is not really accurate.

No signing up for AMC+ so I'll just wait for when it drops on some other streamer

Just finished the 1st episode. So far, none of the adults is remotely a sympathetic character. I wound up rooting for the kids a bit, but they have so little agency in their half-parent-gilded cages that I don't see much they can do about their situations that won't just get them in trouble. Going to watch something else for a bit. Will probably watch the 2nd episode eventually, but the whole "Succession" heritage makes sense to me now, given the villains against villains vibe it's leaving me with. Bleak.

The narrative is taking some time to shape up, but I was pretty sold on Billy Magnussen from the start. His portrayal reminds me a lot of Byron Gogol, that neurotic insecure tech billionaire vibe, and I loved Made for Love. Eager to see his performance expand as the story unfolds.

I was vaguely interested until heard an interview with the lead and his vibe was *really* off-putting to me in a way that’s hard to articulate
