The BCU (Boys Cinematic Universe) is now the VCU (Vought Cinematic Universe), says Eric Kripke

Posted by TheManAboutTown

A few months ago, I interviewed the showrunner behind The Boys, Eric Kripke, for the magazine SFX. It was a lot of fun! But one thing that didn't make the magazine was how he's started not calling his cinematic universe The BCU, but the VCU, like the fake MCU-spoof in the show. I can only imagine the big, Vought-style slate presentation Amazon will be doing soon... /s A link to a bit more info here: [https://x.com/JackJShepherd/status/2044027597609119812](https://x.com/JackJShepherd/status/2044027597609119812)

I'm gonna be honest, I have zero interest in yet another "cinematic universe". I like The Boys, it's a great show. I'm enjoying Season 5. Once it's done, I'm done. I don't need another forever franchise with endless spin-offs, prequels, sequels, reboots, video games, movies, etc.

Same here. I watched the other show at the university. I could not care less though. This is diminishing returns at this point. When this season is done, I'm OUT.

I’ll give whatever comes next a go. Gen V was far better than I was expecting it to be, even if S2 was a bit of a step down from S1.

I agree. The Boys for me is mostly compelling as a story about the arch villains: Vought, The Seven, and ~~penultimately~~ especially The Homelander. When Homelander is gone, as I’m sure thats how season 5 will end, i’m pretty sure my interest will end. Homelander is just that good a character and performance imo. I loath him, I fear him, i’m fascinated by him, sometimes I pity him, and he even makes me laugh out loud surprisingly often.

What do you mean by “penultimately” Homelander? What are you expecting to come right after Homelander?

There is so much value in terms of ending shows and the worlds they created. To have a sense of finality instead of elongating a plotline or damaging a character arc for the sake of needless continuation. So many of the greatest shows of this medium have value because they end. And even something like Breaking Bad justified its spinoffs

Breaking Bad had a singular spinoff show

And a sequel spinoff movie.

That's not a spinoff

I beg to differ. The story was focused on the second male lead instead of the dead male lead, including his storyline we missed in the main show (his work under neo-Nazis). I would say it was a spinoff sidequel/paraquel sequel. But it doesn't really matter. Spinoffs, sequels, triquels, sidequels, prequels, paraquels, midquels and whatnot (I am sure it's not all possible options) are still the same cinematic universe with the main show, whatever it is. Breaking Bad had at least three entitites: Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and El Camino, and let's pretend this animated series about Saul doesn't exist.

I would only agree with you if Gen V was bad, but it wasn’t so I’m on board for what they do next

That why Mothers Milk is so skinny the last few seasons, they have begun milking the franchise dry.

Is there going to be more spinoff shows?

Theres 2 more in development not including gen v, and there will probably be a lot more in the future

Or won't. Because reaction for Gen V season 2 was somewhat lukewarm, worse than for season 1, and the show has been in limbo for months. I guess it's silently cancelled. Will the audience like the Mexican spinoff and the prequel about Vought? We'll see. So maybe Amazon is going to make a season or two. If the shows don't become successful, they will be quietly closed, the VCU will fade out.

It feels very appropriate for Amazon to have the Vought Cinematic Universe. Like they didn’t think for a second that the show satirizes the MCU and its endless projects and just thought “hey we could do that!”

If the show ends anything like the comics, there isn't much scope for story beyond the end of the main arc, so I assume this will all be prequels.

Successful (popular) satire of capitalism in capitalism can’t help but end up becoming what it was satirising.

They are gonna milk this more than they have already.

They really dropped the ball with Tek knight. I would have watched a spinoff with him. He was so good in Gen V but sucked in the boys season 4.

This is how they ruined The Walking Dead's ending. TWD comics had a proper ending that finishes the show with definitive ends for everyone. TWD TV show just had a normal episode that set up spin offs because giving the characters endings limits your cash flow.
