I don’t know if I am being overcritical or overanalysing this but,
Does anyone else feel something off with the dialogue and acting this season ?
This tapered off in episode 2, but some of the lines feel incredibly forced and ramped up to 10.
That Homelander-MM scene where he licks his lips when mentioning his name, for example, just doesn’t feel right. His tone sounds overly fruity and cartoonishly villainous throughout, which doesn’t quite correlate with his character in previous seasons. There seems to be a less disturbing or dark nature to Homelander’s demeanour.
Kimikos dialogue, don’t even get me started ( but I can atleast give them the benefit of the doubt given Kimiko has likely learned most of her English around Butcher and whatnot). The Homelander part is my main concern.
Look, I don’t know if I am being critical because I have overly high expectations for this season, but if anyone else relates, LMK.
The whole audio for kimiko's voice feels very off and dont sound right. Whoever did the audio mix for her lines messed up i think. The quality of it atleast to me was very bad? Sounded like it was recorded off screen in a bad recording studio and they overlayed it with the scene.

Yeh it feels dubbed in or maybe it sounds weird because we've never heard her talk before? Not sure but definently sounds off

They do it for every character. They all have to go into a studio and record off screen and it’s synced to the video as it’s the same lines. However hers is extremely bad/ out of time. The pitch is also wrong she just one level every sentence

I mean, didn't Kimiko say that she watched a lot of TikTok? I feel like her lines and how she acts make sense because of that at least.

Yeah the TikTok thing actually explains so much about how she talks now. Like when you think about it, someone learning language mostly from social media would definitely pick up all those weird phrases and delivery patterns. I've seen this happen with my cousin who moved here few years ago - she started speaking like she was making Instagram stories because that's where she learned most of her casual English
The Homelander thing though, I'm totally with OP on that one. Something feels different about his energy this season and not in good way. Maybe they're trying too hard to make him more obviously unhinged instead of letting that creepy controlled facade slip naturally like before. The lip licking scene made me cringe but not in the way they probably wanted

They are really heavy handed across the board this season, with the raunchy out there humor like cum jokes and the milk thing. I think some of it is funny and a lot is annoying. I wasn’t overly impressed with the first tow episodes but I’ll stick it out cause I love the show.
The kimiko audio is driving me crazy.
Totally unrelated but Annie’s actress has become incredibly unlikable to me. It’s not completely fair of me because I think the root of it is her insistence on continuously getting “work done”. She looks like Walton Goggins in fallout. It’s her life and body so I’m not being fair it bugs the shit out of me

I fully agree with your opinion on Annie’s actress, she seems so uncanny now.

The series has had a huge writer turnover. Most of the original writers left after season 3.

One of my main points is that because they have long since completely abandoned the narrative arcs from the comics, the committee of writers that are winging this story are probably wondering why they are even sticking to a lot of the characters back stories from the source material. They don't care about her arc from the source material, they didn't know why she is the way she is or give a shit. Like listen to her explanation of how she can suddenly talking in perfectly fluent english. She had speec therapy and watched a lot of tick tok. That doesn't make sense. She didn't have a stutter, she had severe psychological trauma. She was basically a feral human. She shouldn't just magically get better from that. She didn't ever need speech therapy, she needed psychotherapy. Like what is even the point of her entire arc if she is suddenly just normal for no reason? Four seasons and all she could ever finally manage to say was "no" and suddenly she is just better. All those years living in a cage never even happened. Her traumatic backstory doesn't matter. She is just normal now.
And the craziest thing is for multiple seasons now I have noticed they utterly made the ending from the source material impossible. Now I think they are going to try to make that happen because they realized they fucked it up with those changes. I am one episode into this new season and it looks like they are now going to try to get to that same place, at least partly.
In the particular case of this story, I won't be a stickler demanding they stick to the source material completely and faithfully, but the writing is all over the place. They arbitrarly kept certain parts and just cut out other parts. Then they are stuck not knowing why these characters even are the way they are because they have cut out so much of their narrative arcs that they don't know what to do with them. They really needed to have a coherent plan for this story going back to season 1 because it couldn't be more clear they are just winging it with this writing.

There is the phrase ‘use it or lose it’ to think about, though. I had issues after an illness and need to practice writing every day which is why I’m on this site - if I hadn’t been typing comments, or if I stop, my English gets really bad and I start forgetting how to spell stuff again. It’s really annoying as I don’t even want to use this site.

They are trying too hard to have some of the comic stuff in there, like Homelander >!f****** soldier boy and the gayness that a lot of the supes had, which like the romans, they didn't really consider it to be "gay" but more of a power thing. it's weird!<. Which doesn't work because they've skipped out on a lot of that throughout the show. And then you have Kimiko talking and her voice not fitting an immigrant who should barely know English and more importantly, the dubbing is way off. Looks like early Schwarzenegger movies.
Homelander doesn't feel scary now like he did in S1/2. They've spent so much time with him not killing anyone that it just isn't scary now. Honestly, the whole show is a bit incestuous. It started out as satire about super heroes, has lived long enough to be a joke itself, and is now semi-seriously trying to finish it out. And that doesn't even get into how some of the actors have REALLY changed how they look; MM and Annie look like completely different people compared to the beginning of the show. At least MM has his beard back for this season but he looks like hes been hitting the Ozempic like crazy.
Then the plot about putting starlighters into camps, but they aren't doing anything. They just sit around doing nothing in a shitty WW2 style ghetto/holocaust camp. "Freedom sets you free" is a bit on the nose, but whatever. The insidious part about the holocaust was that they killed people, and worked the others to literal death. What's the point of getting all these people together to just let them sit around in camps? They are so bored they are doing their own fight club. Work em, kill em, kill em before sending them to camp, something. These people are the "literal" enemy, but they aren't treating them harsh enough to be taken seriously or credibly as a threat like the Nazis they are trying to pass them off as.
Lots of things to take you out of the moment but I've been along this far, I am going to finish it. First two episodes have been 6/10. Only good thing is >!A-trains death and possibly zombie soldier boy!<, without those, it would be a 4/10.
It's hard to take the show serious when it is obvious they don't take themselves seriously. The show has no problem with showing guy r*** or disgusting, gross out shit, but it could, and should, have went really dark. Should have been American Auschwitz type shit.

The last time Homelander felt like he was being used seriously was the season 2 finale and the lab/Ryan sequences from the last season. Everything between and since then has felt off imo. I'm guessing that's going to change by the mid and latter parts of the season, but you'd think everything would be balls to the wall from the get go this time around considering this is the final concluding season with the same episode count rather than them still trying to show off how zany they are.

Honestly super unpopular opinion and want to make it clear Antony Starr is a great actor but Homelander scenes did feel off a little bit at times like the scene of him crying over Soldier Boy. I thought the acting from everybody else was good

He's a fantastic actor, but there's something definitely off with some of the cuts here. I don't know if it's a direction issue or what, or if there's an actual in-show reason for it we just don't know yet. But his acting does feel kind of strange this season.

They're trying to do a homoerotic element to Homelander but much of it doesn't hit right because its so late in the game. (Some of it hits fine)

I hate to hear someone else voice the exact thought I had in my head when I watched it because until now I just thought maybe it was another one of my 'watches-too-many-movier-reviewer-youtubers" type take that no one, not even those channels I watch, ever seem to notice, but looks like signs of trouble ahead now...

I'm gay. I've faced these issues with men. I'd be into this storyline. It's just rushed feeling if it's a thing only for the final season. But especially by now, I'm not watching for the exceptional writing.

I think it's felt that way since S4 and Gen V S1 (a bit less noticeable there due to most of it being a mostly new cast and new locations). With a few exceptions like the Hughie's dad subplot or Homelander at the facility.
Not sure why you're getting downvoted so much. It feels like almost a completely different style of writing and a different version of some of these characters compared to S1-3. Homelander feels like a caricature of his own character now so far, almost like he's one of the Supes from the comic universe rather than how he used to feel in the rest of the show. I'm sure that'll change as the season progresses, but still.

Kimiko being able to talk as fluently as she does with the over-the-top cringe lines they gave her is brutal.
She spent a year on the run, or being a prisoner, or getting deported (really, that was Vought's solution to her ripping the faces of guards?) to an country where English isn't the first language, or getting her body mutilated and having to put herself back together... And yet she had time to attend therapy, speech therapy and watch a ton of TikTok?
Lazy writing.
